@@lordhickory3322 They didn't play around when they built the Tomcat and the Phoenix. That thing was really meant to kill as many bombers as the soviets would field long before they would ever be able to release one of their anti-ship missiles :D
Yeah, the Phoenix missile actually insane. The reason it goes so high is because that allows it to come down really damn fast. The missiles doesnt need to be as agile if its doing a mach 2+ top down attack. In DCS, its what makes the F-14 a better BVR plane than the F-15, even if the missile can be notched. It just forces everyone else to play scared when competent 14' pilots fly around. Shame they didnt do anything with the missile, but the F-14 was pretty much built around the Phoenix. Its so heavy an F-15 couldnt carry it even if the USAF wanted to. The future AIM-260 could bring back long range A2A missiles to the USAF though.
another epic video GS! the way that Sparrow pulled into the F-18 in slow motion while you were swirling the sky with flares was a beautiful shot indeed! Def one for the books boys!!! Great flying all around !!!!!
What I like the most about the F-14's Phoenix is that you can guide it on target practically all the way in TWS and the enemy has very little time to react at the end.
He should be using the AIM-54C rather then the A model. The C has the ability to continue tracking if the lock is broken before the missile goes pitbull, which is huge.
@@HMSNeptun Yeh, Aim-120 works the same, and has the advantage that it can get target data from general Link-16, not just the aircraft that fired it. Though I think the Phoenix' high speed and coming from top makes it harder to react to. Its just such a weird weapon to defend against. The range also means its harder to stay safe; an Aim-120 rarely hits beyond 30 miles, while a Phoenix can reasonably hit chance on 50-60. Its just scary to have F-14s flying around.
To be honest, there is still something about the Tomcat (ESPECIALLY) the swept-wing option, that I just like more than the Hornet. The Tomcat is an incredibly iconic fighter for a reason. Not only was it the face of US air power due to Top Gun and other movies, it also was the model used for a lot of Japanese toys and anime. A lot of those older animes featured fighters that transformed into robots....and nearly all of them were based on the F-14.

The F-15 is the only other airframe that could realistically carry a Phoenix. And I can't see air force jocks wanting to carry those dildos around in the place of AMRAAMs
