      In some live versions they make the breakdown even heavier by slowing the tempo down in the guitar part before. Or maybe it’s just me. But still, one of the heaviest breakdowns to my knowledge also.

    For me, "Rational gaze" was the song that made me "get" Meshuggah. It's probably their easiest song and then you just have to realize 90% of their music is like that.

    • @vertigo4567
      @vertigo4567 3 роки тому +5

      Also, its funny that you say rational gaze was the one that made you "get" meshuggah since it has one of their more complicated time signatures which was 23/16 so the guitars only truncated with the 4/4 drums every so often. However meshuggah was able to pull it off while still making the song somehwhat easy to head bang to. THAT is the brilliance of Meshuggah.

    Ok so the tricky thing with the opening riff of Letharigca is that the riff phrases are 5 beats, 6 beats, 6 beats, 6 beats, OR [ 10/8 12/8 12/8 12/8 ], because of this it sneaks a compound feel (like Dancers) into the riff which, combined with a slow tempo, gives it that rolling, sludgy feel that makes it so hard to find the beat. But, the cymbal is keeping time in 4/4 (but there are lots of accents with the riff on other cymbals which masks it a little), and the snare is on beat 3.

    I had a pretty fun experience with their song "Obsidian" a while back. You said something about the riffs being hypnotic in a way in the last video, and Obsidian is the perfect example of that feeling.
    A friend and I were driving down a pretty empty country road in the middle of the day last year, when Obsidian started playing. I know my friend and I were talking, but at the time, it felt like being weirdly alone at the moment. It's a strangely unsettling experience that I'd recommend everyone try at least once. I don't know if it'd be a good song for a reaction video, since it's extremely repetitive and a bit dull if you're actively listening and trying to give your thoughts on it, but if you're just zoning out and not focused on it, it builds up the atmosphere a lot.

    A great way to get your brain to hear the 4/4 groove in Meshuggah is listen the first song on Chaosphere... Concatenation. Its one of the most chaotic Meshuggah tunes. Then listen to the remix of it on the Rare Trax album. The only differences are its slowed down quite a bit, and the drums were changed to a simple more recognizable groove. Same exact time signature and structure though. Your mind will be blown.... its quite a revelation. I think they remixed that song literally to show people the method behind the madness.

      Singularity is a dope song, dont get me wrong. But if he really is going to react to Textures in the future, I think it would be a much more pleasure, if he listens to one of the songs with their former singer. Back in the day, it really hurt when he left the band. They found a really good replacement for him, but at least to me it never was the same again. I feel like, if the album "Silhouettes" would be released today, everyone would just be blown away. A 10/10 perfect album in my opinion, Unfortunately they were ahead of their time. I feel like the whole modern prog/djent scene evolved just a few years later. For instance "Storm Warning" is such a fucking masterpiece of a song!

    A tip that may help you with the grooves is that when you find the hi hit or cymbal you are talking about, keep headbanging in the exact same rhythm as them even if they change or start playing a different cymbal groove for a sec. If you just keep headbanging in that 4/4 rmeter without breaking it, you'll start to find things just start magically syncing up. One thing to remember with meshuggah is that the beat NEVER changes (in almost every song), and usually i can see when youre not even trying, your headbang-feeling is right. Just dont let off-beat accents fool you, and keep going with the same pulse and it will line up.
    But yeah in this one the symbals weren't as clear in the mix, which could make it trickier.

    It's like every damn song on this album has that godly riff drop. 10:45 like oh my f'n word...
    Anyways, one tip I have is that a lot of the time you don't need to lose the feel once you have it. It actually keeps it through a lot of the song no matter the song changes. You just have to get used to the guitar riffs hitting off beat of your head nod, and just keep your nod going. But more you listen to the song and know the changes, the more you can pick up which cymbal/hihat or snare hits on your nods.

    Most of their songs are in 4/4, just follow the cymbals and snare... their songs are so easy to headbang and groove to 🤷🏻‍♂️

    If its any help mate, I find that with Meshuggah it helps to groove along to the pulse of the song and not the beat, which is essentially what you're already doing (bopping your head to the "1 2 3 4" you're picking up from the symbals). What the message from Alex is saying (I think) is headbang in half time i.e. Only bang your head in the 1st and 3rd of the "1 2 3 4" the symbals helped you find. Head down on beat one, rise it up through beat two, repeat.
    Aside from that, I too am still blown away by this breakdown every time I hear it.

    What may be throwing you off is the cymbal is hitting 1,2,3,4 for one measure and then hitting 1,2 and then off beats of 3, and 4. So everytime you lock in you have to carry your self through the offbeat hits until it lines up again. As soon as you "correct" yourself when Haake hits offbeat you will be off for when it returns to the downbeat.

    You had it right following the hi hat/cymbals..and in most cases the snare. MOST of Meshuggah's tracks you can count 1..2..3..4 and stay on. everything else just moves around that. if you just keep nodding in time when you hear that hat going, STAY ON IT. Everything else is syncopation, fucking around with the 4, which is what makes it interesting and have movement like it does. When you did that New Millennium Cyanide Christ vid with them in the RV, I kept wanting to grab your face while you were looking away trying to figure it out and be like, "DUDE!! WATCH THEM BANG!!! THIS IS THE WAY!!! THEY'RE LITERALLY SHOWING YOU!!!". But that's also what makes Meshuggah sound awesome ;) When in doubt, if you find something that feels normal for most of the time, stay on it and you'll be good brotha ;) you're doing great, keep it up!

    When you started to headbanging a 4/4 rhythm when you repeated the breakdown at 9:14, was correct. Even though it may seem offbeat when the next measure comes, just keep the 4/4 timing and it will synch up.

  • @maelss
    @maelss 3 роки тому +6

    For a first time listener of Meshuggah you dont really find a the rhythm. You just let the music cascade over you. After you have listened to them a few times thats when you pick up the beat.

  • @HillstrumAudio

    I always listen for what the cymbals are doing to find the groove/tempo. Even if there are different cymbals being hit, that is generally where the count is going to be done. Sometimes you can try and figure it out by listening to where the snare falls but that can be easier said than done most of the time with this genre of music. Just stick with the cymbals, and they will generally never steer you wrong. Just listen to whatever cymbal is being consistently hit and just nod to that for the rest of the song even if there is a change in time or a quiet part, and you'll land back on the snare again when the song picks back up. Tapping your foot to the pulse can also help you find it while you are listening.

    Usually the snare is what to follow or the power hand on a crash, china or hats. Once you find the groove, it usually stays consistent. Like dragging a quarter note. Find the groove and keep that same rhythm. It may drag on certain counts but, always falls back into the same pocket. Side note...his hands usually keep 4/4 time. The kick is what presents the poly.

  • @ecw11
    @ecw11 3 роки тому +1

    This is indeed a super heavy breakdown, but you gotta check out some of The Acacia Strain to hear some off the gnarliest breakdowns ever. They definitely take someeshuggah influence when it comes to guitar work and breakdowns

  • @andrewjordanmuzic
    @andrewjordanmuzic 2 роки тому

    As far as meshuggah and counting the grooves goes, the riffs are typically a long pattern built off the same rhythmic motif and every time the riff repeats (“ so to say” ) one segment of the motif changes causing the groove to be displaced over the bar line. The 4/4 meter usually carried by the cymbal or hi-hat allows you to hear the displacements as the motif develops and eventually after a certain number of changes the riff loops back around and catches up on itself. Where it gets tricky though is that in certain songs like New millennium cyanide Christ they will drop a 16th note out of the 4/4 meter on purpose, causing a subtle almost unnoticeable shift especially at faster tempos. Hope that helps, Glad you’re doing the videos, they are an unbelievable band. Definitely recommend “Do not look down” and “The mouth licking what you’ve bled” Cheers!

    Usually when you can't find the beat pattern in a Meshuggah song just wait for the vocals to start, he most often starts right on the "one" beat and can be easier to follow than the instruments. Other than that, the hihats or crash cymbal almost always keeps a constant pulse you can bang your head or dance to.

    I hope you do the whole rest of the ObZen album. One of my favorites. The track ObZen and also Pineal Gland Optics are two of my favorite 'Shug songs of all time
    Also part of the fun with Meshuggah is finding the groove. The person in your DM is correct. In this song it's still the cymbals. The snare is on 3 of every measure. If you want your 'Shug listening experience to be a bit more "relaxing", you can listen to the cymbals but "feel" the song in half time on 1 and 3 (so "feel" the song every other hit).
    PS I sent you an IG DM that might help you out

    Following the crash helps sometime.

    I was there , 2019 Meshuggah tour, they stopped and played at Budapest.
    The whole show was a blast, but the way they played Lethargica got me. One cymbal , and they are in the song, before the breakdown hits, they actually slow the tempo, to make it hit even bigger.

    Drew, listen to the cymbals on 1-2-3-4 and the snare hits that land on 3. It doesn't work for all of their songs, but for some of them, or parts of them. Just like that guy said. Try counting while you're listening.
