  • What to look for in thrift stores? It's a common question I get from people who are just beginning their thrifting journey. I actually have a system that was created over the years, and I want to share it with you all.
Subscribe and learn how I make profit from buying valuable treasures at thrift stores, garage sales and estate auctions, and resell them on Etsy, eBay, Chairish and at auctions.

This is really useful. Sadly where i live you don’t see the volumes of art you have in the US. I just love looking at the beautiful art and objects you find. Keep at it. Love looking in your shop too. Postage is a jiller for us so far away.

Great news that you are producing a guide on how what and where to buy and sell.. based on your own experience 👍👏… very much look forward to seeing more about that, Joe…This video was very clear and well set out as a list to help people to focus and stick to their own set of sensible rules… to maximise an online ‘business’ selling thrifted items. People think it’s easy…but…. you point out that it takes much effort and thought in order to be any kind of success!!!….Thank you,Joe…am sure they should watch this…AND LEARN!!!! 👏👏👏👏….Sue (UK)

I'm so happy I found your channel. I tried buying art once. And was done with it. You motivated me to try again. I have a video of my first every estate sale and first ever art piece. Video describes it all. But there was a tear in the painting. 😢. Not even sure if I can resell it. I have it hanging on my wall. And you can't tell it is torn. But it is. As you mentioned, if it was torn I wouldn't have bought it. But it was online auction and they didn't show the tears. Any recommendations?

I hate when that happens. It's happened to me multiple times. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do. I usually just make note of the auction house that sold the item, and either avoid buying from their auctions, or specifically asked about any damage be I bid. Most legit auction and downsizing companies disclose things like this, but not all of them. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Do you have a good way to identify signatures? I have a handful of interesting pottery pieces that are signed by the artist, but I can't decipher it. They have a good amount of age, heft, and are incredibly well executed. I can find similar pieces but they are all over the board. So I'm looking for a trusted resource for artist/maker identification. Google lens is crap :)
Ps-i enjoy your videos, obviously, and look forward to some specialized content. I saw your cid in the difference between lithography, etching, etc.

I totally understand your frustration. Signatures on pottery can be so hard to identify. The first thing I try and do is trace how the artist would have signed the piece. If the signature is cursive, pay attention to the intersecting points and note which line was drawn first, and which was drawn over the other (hope that makes sense :)). Then I try to identify each letter, especially ones that I am certain of. This can help to eliminate what the other letters couldn't be. For example, if you know you found a letter "h", you can assume the letter before it is either s, c, g, t, p, a vowel, etc. If the signature is very faint, grab a piece of paper and a pencil and see if you can make a rubbing that makes the signature easier to read. Also, check out themarksproject.org. Hope this helps!
