Budget BMW E30, Sideways, In the Woods [Episode 3] -- /BORN A CAR

  • Somehow Ryan got the E30 built and caged it in time to enter it in the Empire State Performance Rally. This event has a reputation of being rough... real rough. Can Ryan and co-driver Alex Jagger get the BMW to finish, or stuck in the woods?

    One of the best parts about this series is Ryan. He is such a great host. Gets to the point, explains things easily and all without shouting or screaming or trying to put on a show. It's refreshing thing to have a host on a car show like that, and it makes it so much more enjoyable to watch.

    Watching you guys drive through the woods like that is terrifying. I had a Ford Explorer I stripped down into a go kart and we totaled it just like you nearly did hitting a ditch and losing control. My friend who was driving didn't know how to correct for it so we went right into the trees at 35 mph.

    So much deja vu. My first drift event in my e36 the fuel pump wiring shorted and we wired it to the battery with speaker wire to finish out the day. BMW wiring is always a hassle lol. Love these episodes, keep up the great work Ryan.

    Ryan is such a good host. And the creative freedom he is given to do the writing, producing and directing makes this series one of the best out there. And I don't even know anything about cars. Subscribed just because of Ryan's amazing work on this series.

      Wow, this is a huge compliment! Thanks Aidan! I really appreciate the 'creative freedom' comment. /DRIVE has been very great in trusting in my work, and I've been working hard to make authentic 'real' feeling content!

    Alex was calling those notes sooooo late. Hahahaha, I would be so terrified in the driver seat.

    • @vladstr100
      @vladstr100 7 років тому

      Tim Galvin I don't follow rallys so excuse my ignorance. What are the notes for exactly? I assume it's directions but I have no clue.

    • @RyanSymancek
      @RyanSymancek 7 років тому +1

      Notes are directions for the turns and road coming up... given in a code that can be read quickly to the driver, to give enough information for he/she to get an idea of what's coming up. Since the competitors don't get to see the stages at speed beforehand, the primary job of the co-driver is to read off the notes.

    • @vladstr100
      @vladstr100 7 років тому

      Ryan Symancek Thanks, I get it now.

    • @timgalvin5337
      @timgalvin5337 7 років тому

      Correct. For example, "Right 2" would be a tight right-hand corner. "Left 6" would be a sweeping flat-out left corner.

    Glad I experienced losing my clutch before. I drove an entire year in my EP3 with no clutch through rain, snow, and the occasional clear day. The key I found to doing it was to rev 1,000 RPM above my normal shift point when up shifting since I noticed I'd lose about 1,000 if I shifted at my normal shift point of 2,000-2,500 RPM. The opposite came for down shifting I'd need to get the car my normal up shift point by dropping the revs to 1,000 to 1,500 RPM and rev it up to 2,000-2,500 RPM. You could actually down shift the same way as you up shift but you burn more fuel that way and make the car easier to jerk and go fast for a second. The other key was waiting for a little pause between shifting, basically holding the shifter on the shift gate enough to where it would slide in without grinding gears. Never had to change syncros and didn't wear them out either. What damage I did do was to the fly wheel, it had scoring and cracks on it. The clutch disc was actually fine. What caused my issue was a throw out bearing and the clutch slave going bad.

    Learning to drive your car without the the clutch is an invaluable skill and will greatly improve your over all shifting. At this point I drive "clutch optional"; i.e., I try to drive so that if I hit a bump and don't clutch all the way in or don't have time to clutch in, it makes no difference at all. Also a good skill for long drives in traffic ;)

    • @010FSL101
      @010FSL101 7 років тому +1

      The clutch is a wear item just like brakes so it should be checked. I didn't know it was replaced, then they should have checked the slave also if its still original then you know it's not going to last. Just like when you do your clutch you also inspect the flywheel, rear main seal, throwout bearing, slave, and other small parts because you don't wanna drop the trans again for a bearing.
      But i get it, the point of this build was to do it as cheap as possible and he is a damn good driver.
