Whenever people watch crash videos and think that they are cool ( I think they are cool af ) they don't really realize how devastating the crashes are for the driver because not only are they most likely going to lose the rally, it's a shit load of money to fix up there car or to buy a new one if they total it. rally is awesome and i hope to do it one day and I also wish that it as bigger in america than it is right now because i personally enjoy it more than any other motorsport.

james harmon honestly. that shows how stupid we are lmao. Nascar is gay af all they do is go in a circle and every once in a while there is a crash. Its stupid af. rally racing is constant edge of your seat action and you never know what is going to happen next. I love it so much and i actually hope to get into the sport one day myself :D

yes, you can go out and buy a Honda fit for 10 grand, and yes, you can probably put a cage, two seats and all the other safety stuff in it for another 8... but this is where this "budget racing" thing goes a bit wrong. because youre looking easily at another 5 grand for a half decent set of gravel suspension, and a set of tyres (you'll want at least 2 sets) is about another grand a piece, plus youre going to need spares for the brakes and various other suspension components, easily another grand. Then theres getting it registered (oh yes, these things have to be street legal AND insured, and insurance for a racecar is not cheap). then youll need a tow rig, because even though it is street legal, youre insurance wont allow for it to be driven long distances to and from events, so youll need a truck and trailer. then theres the gear: helmet $500-1000, racing suit 500-1000, the hans device he has to wear around his neck is a minimum of 1000 dollars and it is mandatory. Going racing for 18 grand is all very well and good in theory, but youre actually looking probably a minimum of 30000 just to get the car ready and to one event, after that the costs die down, but it still isn't cheap. entry fees are expensive, and then theres getting the racing license, the school for which can cost 3 grand. so if you want to do a season of racing, your first year youre probably looking at $35-40000. not really budget racing when you actually look at all the costs.

+Jack Khashmanian Protip: Don't tell your insurance that you've modified your vehicle. Worst comes to worst, if you crash it you don't get anything out of it unless you tow the wreckage home and part it.

+Jack Khashmanian I am building a BMW e36 rally car. I have my helmet -120, insurance - 30per month, cage is 4k, suspension, 2.2k. Other items, Ie fire suit, skid plate, fire extinguishers, med kits, spill kits, steering wheel, tires and all. The whole project is looking to run about 10k for me. Then another 1-2k per rally. Not that bad. 1 or 2 rallies a year and then 50 dollar rx inbetween for my first few years. Biggest bite is the initial car.

while this poster is using worst case pricing and basically figuring all "new" gear (you don't need all brand new gear) he is mostly right. you have to have a tow car, you have to have spares (though often the best way to get spares is to buy a wrecked version of your car and strip it apart at home). but there is going to be 1-2 grand in costs per event you simply can't "bum" your way out of. and of course being able to afford to build a 18k $ car doesn't mean your also well off enough to afford totalling it. you have to enter every race with the mindset that it's not the end of the world if you tow back a pile of smashed wreckage.

A bit like what happened here, I have a story. My dad is a rally driver, and he was literally on the brink of winning the rally, when he fell into a ditch a few hundred metres from the finish. As his friend was passing by, he saw the car. He then, out of full respect for my dad, stopped next to him and attached a tow rope to the car. He pulled him out and my dad finished. He is such a nice man for stopping, when HE could’ve won the rally, but sacrificed his win to prevent my dad for getting a ‘DNF’. I love rallying. It is the most interesting and gruesome sport.

But you can find them selling older wrx's, 2.5rs, vw's, volvo 240's, and some audi's that already have a cage, seats, belts, and more but never really but them into use. 1. There’s no such thing as rally without a roll cage
      2. There’s also no such thing as buying a rallycar for 1k and just going and driving it with no issues. If you get a rallycar for 1k, be prepared to spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to get it remotely stage worthy
      3. Motorsports are inherently expensive. If you’re looking for cheap, rally is not the sport for you. I would recommend curling or badminton

It's anything but a Fiesta mate. Nothing is the same, not even the body.

So they spent 400k on drugs? Otherwise how did they waste so much money if 100k would have given them the same results?

It's pretty simple see. The big companies can work off of the fact that since they have money, they can use it to make more money. Sure you can weld your own roll cage, piping, chassis, and all that, but who did it? Not a big company that will pay you to advertise their gear. The sheer amount of money you could get if your name was Ken Block and you spent 20,000 grand on a top of the line, trademarked roll cage outweighs the purchase price. Imagine the advertising revenue when you post their logo among the countless others you'll have on you're rally car. Oh you'll be making well over 500k. The 100k goes to the car, the other 400k is an investment. Also, another big thing about the automotive industry. Don't get me wrong, I am very much impressed by your build (and I love Imprezas), but not everyone knows that building a rally car is a very achievable goal. If it was, who would be sitting at home watching Ken Block do it? No, instead the industry is going to put on big price tags that say "you can't afford this" so people won't attempt it. Frankly, you can see this same business pattern in a lot of things you can build; like PC's and firearms. The demand will switch from the product itself to the parts that make it. Thankfully, we are at a happy medium where parts are cheap, but not so cheap that they aren't produced at all or are ridiculously expensive, (hint: airsoft).
