Sebastiaan Mook I’m sure I’m the reason I doubt ricksons technique is the problem it’s me I’m sure I been getting smashed by purples n blues I’m only 2 stripe
I had the pleasure of rolling with master Rickson when he travelled to Aus in 2019 for various seminars. To say HE was humbled is an understatement, he thought he would pass my guard with ease.. Little did he know I trained in bjj for 15 months in Rio in 2016, as a White belt and received my Blue just before leaving, training a total of 11 months. Alot was due to my natural athleticism and high fight IQ!! I just find most combat sports quite easy to pick up. Even when I was 18 and started boxing, i was holding my own with guys who had been training for 10 years. My speed and power was mind blowing for alot of guys, i just needed abit of defence work but within 6 months i had fought 3 amateur fights and won all, 2 by KO the other by an easy decision. I wanted to put him away but my coach just wanted me to stick to my jab and body shots, as I needed more time in the ring. Every time I throw headshots the chance of me KO'n guys is very high. Just like in Bjj, when I'm on my back I have a crazy ability to explode into submissions many cant, sometimes I scare myself and that is no joke!! I'm not saying i scared master Gracie but he knew I wasn't a normal noob blue belt and had this look like WTF this guy is a beast!! After training he asked if I was ever in the US to shoot him an email so we can tee up some rolling time. He said something that I already knew, if i dedicate all my spare time to mastering the easy art of BJJ, the sky is the limit for me... He mentioned that I reminded him of his late brother Ryan Gracie, said I have alot of fire in my belly and if channeled correctly I could do something magical.. His words, not mine!! Anyway, he as expected caught me in a beautiful northsouth choke, i tapped and thought alright that was good, let's see you try that again Red belt!! I told him please go for that again, I know where I went wrong. Indeed he tried again, set up differently but I knew what he was planning, i went into my flow state and could see everything in slow motion. Like I previously mentioned, my fight IQ is way above normal and I made all the correct moves to prevent him from getting it again. He got side control but couldn't do much in the 5 mins we had left so he just decided to stand up and move to the next student, pretending he was rushed for time. Both he and I know he was frustrated with my defence skills. A tip to anyone who has an exceptionally high fight IQ like myself, please make the most of it, and dedicate yourself to your chosen art!! I'm 23 and now, and I know 100% that I will be the UFC WW champ by the age of 30. I haven't fought in MMA before but i know I'd adapt very quickly to it. Esp with my speed and one shot KO power with both hands and feet. It's enivatable!! Im a physical beast standing at 6,2ft, I walk around at 192lb at roughly 10% body fat, so a cut to 170lb is easy work. I will defend my belt 4 times, step up and fight for the 185lb title and if all goes well be the first double champ in both those divisions. At 34 I'd like to debut at LHW and see how I go against the bigger lads, I won't need to cut weight, so my blistering hand speed and one shot KO power will be there for 25 mins. Unlike those in that division currently. Its not outside the realms of possibility but I could be a UFC champ at WW, MW, LHW!! It's not going to be an easy road but this is the path I've chosen. It's enivatable, I see greatness on the horizon for my future, as does Master Gracie, my coach, and my mother. BTW I'm full of shit, none of this happened. I'm the opposite to all of the above. Hope this had alot of people cringing, thinking this mother fucker is delusional!!
Hahaha I bet you where cracking yourself up laughing when you where writing that! I wonder how many people that have done martial arts have met someone like this? They usually only last a few weeks...
Living legend. "Everything Bruce Lee said was the true essence of martial arts and his philosophy about fighting was 100% correct." - Rickson Gracie (the clip where he says this is on youtube)
Nice ! Can't wait to watch the full videos. But when filming an instructional it's always a good idea to have two differents colors of gis (a guy in white and the other one in blue or black).
It is 2018 and the "gracie gift" pass is still being taught - amazing. No disrespect to Rickson, he is the man. Maybe the full lesson will have some details I've never seen before to avoid the triangle. Edit: I've noticed that the people who are most successful at doing this pass to me are people with thick upper bodies (i.e. people who are hard to triangle to begin with).
Our association head is a Rickson black belt and we are taught this pass. The key, as I understand it, is to keep your weight down on the leg you are passing. This immobilizes the hips of the guy on the bottom and there's just no room to setup a triangle. When we drill it it is a very high pressure pass and is very uncomfortable for the guy in guard. Not saying it's impossible to catch a triangle here, but I haven't seen it happen at my club yet when the pass is performed properly.
Nelson .... I’ve used this technique a lot, you just have to be ready for a possible triangle while you do it, just gotta avoid it, I’ll look up, keep my head and body straight, makes it tough to sink in the triangle ...
Trent Turner notice at about 44 seconds, with the left arm wrapping around the leg while the other hand is secured on the belt or with both collars in one hand pulled to that distance.Point is have a strong base and keep that arm strong on the stomach with the elbow in tight against the thigh. It looks loose but in practice if you get the grip there is a balance point of pressing against the abdomen and the thigh using your whole arm without leaving space to pass the leg over.
If I may add. I was always taught this as keep head low and do it as a “stacking” pass. Don’t give them any room to put that leg into position. High pressure
Nice traditional Close Guard pass, but I prefer the standing one. This pass has a risk of get caught in triangle, since you put single under arm. The key of this pass is the knee which blocking the opponent's butt and posture up all the time to prevent getting Triangle Choked.
Why did he only use one underhook on the pass? He exposed himself to a triangle there right? Also, what was the movement where he opened the guys closed guard called?
1) This is a fairly traditional judo pass, nothing wrong with that. You can mix this pass with the "double underhooks pass" depending on your opponent reaction. 2) He does not expose himself to a sankaku jime because the hips of the bottom guy are pinned on the mat and the arm is not extended far from him, he keeps a good posture, and the elbow is pressing against the thigh. It is rather difficult to go for a sankaku jime when your hips and one of your legs are immobilised. 3) No idea, sorry, I'm not familiar with most bjj terms.
I just started and this pass was one of the first things I learned. When I tried it in a free roll session my foot got grabbed. I moved it a little further away, turned my foot out... my other hand was still controlling the chest so i put some pressure on there. I still haven't mastered this one yet but it's good when it works
There is no tips, if you dont get the arm on the same side where you are going to rise your leg, you will get catched. This is old pass, today there are a lot of "magic" out there that wont let you do it.
You can either controlling the opponent's sleeve the same side you want to post your foot. It is better to post diagonally (7 clock direction from your POI) to help you posture up and to prevent getting Triangled during the single under.
Continuous repetitions. Main reason a person gets hit with a triangle while doing this pass will be their posture. Honestly one of the most effective/basic passes, but it requires sound technique to pull it off without gifting them a triangle/armlock. Posture up/head up, keep control of your grip, hips in tight with theirs...and of course once you pass their lapel from your inside hand to your outside hand, you can move that inside hand outside to grip something like their back tail of their gi (like Rickson did).
Wow I didn't mean for you guys to have to go at it like that That's the only person that I have a problem to get by there guard I can get by everybody else's I was just asking if you know something special for somebody like that I've watched a couple other videos I think I figured it out something I'm going to try thank you guys anyway
Lisa & Bobby Stamey Keep training. You'll figure it all out and that's one of the beauties of BJJ is the feeling when it slots into place both physically and mentally. 👍
What the most people don't understand is that he is putting so much pressure that it's impossible to make a triangle or arm bar attempt. Our school follow Rickson and believe me if it done the proper way you be begging the other to pass your guard with that much pressure and weight. That's invisible jiu jitsu.
I think that guard pass is 70% effective as its to high - personally I would use a lower guard pass and use my torque to flip the opponent over and then on top of me.
I just watched Renzo Gracie video about passing and he specified that arm and leg should be same sided to prevent sweeping. BJJ: Renzo Gracie's tip for opening any guard - UA-cam
I don't doubt Rickson but I doubt this is basic (as advertised in the title). I'll get triangled really fast if I attempt this at my low level. Basic for me means general principles like both arms in OR out, not recommending the opposite.

I'm a humbled guy but the high white belts can beat my ass an the low white belts keep rolling my ass and challenge me, not to menton the blue or purple belts feel like I'm rolling with a cloud how effortlessly they roll. I couldn't imagine how a belt belt or red belt would feel. I am a guy with street wars under my scars so i felt tuff an strong. Walked into the gym my first day as if i was going into a fight but I'm learning I get with anyone that's trained I'm just a victim. Not a cool thought so I return to the gym an eat mat.
How would someone dislike a dude that has nothing to prouve in martial art a son of a champion and innovator a champion and perfectionist him self his son a champion... Press a like for grand master rickson
I got one person that I try that with and he keeps raising his butt I can't hold him down he's got crazy strong leg strength I can stand up with him with his legs wrapped around me and he won't let go
Lisa & Bobby Stamey you could go for alternative guard breaks. There are quite a few you can do while standing up, if you can get there without getting swept. Then there's the elbows into the thighs technique, but for training it's a bit unconfortable and can be considered a "dick move" in some gyms.
kommisar thanks for the advice! As for the knee in thigh, I've used it effectively plenty of times against more aggressive sparring partners, that's why I recommend it
kommisar it's the same effect as a kick to the leg. At first you can handle it, but constant pressure makes your leg start to weaken, and it will eventually break
kommisar it's advice I gave to this guy that needs help passing the guard, surely a white belt who will be training with other white belts. I know from first hand experience that it works with lower levels, so I recommended it to him. Maybe it might get countered at blue or purple and higher or whatever belt you are, but for his level it should work fine. Just because it doesn't work on you doesn't mean it doesn't work at all, especially when starting
It's amazing to see in the comment section that there are lots of UA-camrs who know more about guard passing than a 9th degree black belt.
I would like to see how well they roll with him i have heard horror stories from my instructor about guys rolling with Rickson
I roll on regular n this pass people always recover guard to quickly imo
@@TheSands83 I think it works very well against inverters, but the the lapel grip is key. If I miss that its back to the guard.
Sebastiaan Mook I’m sure I’m the reason I doubt ricksons technique is the problem it’s me I’m sure I been getting smashed by purples n blues I’m only 2 stripe
Sebastiaan Mook that’s a good point it’s hard to know if you missed a section of the technique
It doesn't matter what the video comments say. If Rickson Gracie wants to pass your guard....the man is gonna pass your guard, period.

There is no video with a more perfect demonstration of this guard pass available than this one.
Living legend. "Everything Bruce Lee said was the true essence of martial arts and his philosophy about fighting was 100% correct." - Rickson Gracie (the clip where he says this is on youtube)
Still my fav guard pass the old school stuff works best
Love and respect for master Rickson
Mestre Rickson passando uma posição. Irado.

So simple but beautiful! Basics/fundamentals always win
The background music has me pumped lol
Would love to train with Rickson, he’s gonna get your technique spot on ...
Tão simples, e só conheci um que usava habitualmente com eficiência, meu sensei de Judô!
Oldschool essa aí!
I like Rickson out of his whole family because he's a true warrior. I don't think his 400+ record is accurate but everyone has their prerogative.
Rickson would probably feel like a tree trunk. I've rolled with people that have the same posture as Rickson and they're literally immovable.
Nice ! Can't wait to watch the full videos.
But when filming an instructional it's always a good idea to have two differents colors of gis (a guy in white and the other one in blue or black).

Serious question. Does anyone still use this guard pass at the higher belts as one of their main passes
Yes
Yes I personally do. In a 1 stripe black belt even if it doesn’t go exactly like this I use the same set up to at least open the guard
Nelson Kang my trainer basically says keep your face right above theirs and rotate like a clock while gripping how this guy is
Just tuck the arm that’s still inside the guard. Rickson did it you didn’t notice. No guard pass is without counter though. But it’s perfectly viable.
The BASICS should never stop being taught.
0:30 why he dont grab gracie gi?
May be because it's instructional only ?? :V
Gods can't be grapped
And one guy tried me to tell that when I'm in someone's guard i have to press my hand on my opponents chest or on his nose, opinions?
What do I do if they grab my ankle?
I was taught to secure the opponent's wrist on the side I'm going to put up my knee. Hope that helps!
Why Rickson wears coral belt? He receive his red belt on July 2017 and this os posted 2018.
He prefers it. Helio Gracie wore a blue belt.
Amazing footage!
How do you do this pass without getting caught in triangle 🤔
He makes it look so easy like breathing air.. champions forever
Well, you’ve seen the way the man breathes air.
Alguien sabe como se llama el maestro da tecnicas super buenas
Sem duvida o melhor lutador de vale tudo que defendeu o estilo jiu jitsu, melhor guerreiro do mundo. Rickson Gracie.
He is not the best warrior in the world he was the best of his time but no man is the best
At 0:42 why doesn't he grab Rickson's right hand? Not trying to be a smart ass, I am genuinely interested.
I have one question - when he has one arm in and one arm out, isn't he in danger of the triangle?
Trent Turner notice at about 44 seconds, with the left arm wrapping around the leg while the other hand is secured on the belt or with both collars in one hand pulled to that distance.Point is have a strong base and keep that arm strong on the stomach with the elbow in tight against the thigh. It looks loose but in practice if you get the grip there is a balance point of pressing against the abdomen and the thigh using your whole arm without leaving space to pass the leg over.
oscar delgado thank you!
If I may add. I was always taught this as keep head low and do it as a “stacking” pass. Don’t give them any room to put that leg into position. High pressure
His arm elbow is on the inside of the thigh so he is not in danger
Nice traditional Close Guard pass, but I prefer the standing one. This pass has a risk of get caught in triangle, since you put single under arm. The key of this pass is the knee which blocking the opponent's butt and posture up all the time to prevent getting Triangle Choked.

pass out
Same here just started last week and it was one of the first drills I did.
Why did he only use one underhook on the pass? He exposed himself to a triangle there right? Also, what was the movement where he opened the guys closed guard called?

3) No idea, sorry, I'm not familiar with most bjj terms.
When ever I try to use this guard pass, everyone grabs my left ankle, the one I post out. Any tips?
wondering the same.
I just started and this pass was one of the first things I learned. When I tried it in a free roll session my foot got grabbed. I moved it a little further away, turned my foot out... my other hand was still controlling the chest so i put some pressure on there. do it right haha. Henry Akins did a great video explaining the details. Very high success rate if you position yourself correctly
Qual o nome da musica de fundo?
Nice...there is an interview I just subtitled it if you mind taking I look at oss.
It would be a better video with an explanation rather than just music and images.

kommisar but it hurts like hell, so they tend to move their leg lol
kommisar it's the same effect as a kick to the leg.
