Its Thursday and I have a big race next Saturday. I was just told I'd be running in sectionals and I know I should be proud of myself because I have to be the one o the faster kids on my team to be qualified as only the top runners can race. As soon as I heard the news I thought "not again" after just running a meet a couple days ago thinking it was m last race. But I told myself to stop worrying about it since it's more than a week away. I also said it's an opportunity that a handful can experience. My point is, if you're dealing with nerves, try thinking more positive thoughts. There's no point in worrying until the day of the race, so what if you don't do good, not every race is going to be a PR or perfect.
I think I realized when I got a little older (aka out of college and into Masters competition) that when I was in high school and college, it was not that I was "nervous" about distance racing, I was simply dreading it. Eventually, I did switch to more positive self-talk, reassuring myself that there wasn't any pressure to "win" (which I never did, by the way), and to just approach the race like I do workouts...just do what you can do in the moment, and enjoy the process.
I do hurdles and being on the line ready to start time freezes and me being very a anxious person u get scared.. I rummemebr my best time was when I was the most nervous and when the race began I felt like I was flying, I didn’t even feel pain after the race or any type of breathing loss.
I have terrible anxiety... it’s so bad that when I’m running a 1600 (in highschool) about half way done my entire body goes numb from the hips down. I can barely feel my feet moving but somehow still the pain. The only reason I don’t stop is muscle memory... I need help so someone please tell me how to channel or get rid of it my mom holds high expectations...
I'm literally in the exact same boat as you! Before my races, i feel a dead weight in my legs which also feel super tight and heavy. I don't know how to stop it. If you figure out how to stop it, please let me know
These videos are awesome, as well as the ones where you comment your biggest races. Keep em coming! P. S how do we get run gum in Italy? Would be curious to try.
hey nick, big fan, but could you make a video explaining the type of times you need to run in high school to get to certain schools? im a sophomore in California running a 159 (for the second time last week), but would love some guidance on what i can do with my times to go to different schools. thanks!
go to the school that is right for you! There are some D1 schools you could walk on to right now. If you want a full ride scholarship you will be to be down in the low 1:50s by the end of high school
@@Sbaker121 Oh it went really well, our team lost bc we're really small but individually I did really good. I had to to the mile,800, 400, and 4x4 relay
@@animationsbyclaire4358 what thats crazy my teams also rlly small but thats alot usually people who do the mile only do 3 events at MOST in my school. good job though! i wouldve been exhausted😓
Abit of topic but I think the first couple of months of running is the one where you most improve since you learn your form and breathing and both of those make a big difference
Can you do a video on how to avoid burnout? I can smash training for about 4 or 5 months before the last month (where it really matters) when I feel not only unmotivated but disinterested in running as well. I end up running worse than the beginning of the season. It's happened to me twice now where I'm incredibly motivated smash workouts before just collapsing mentally towards the end of the season. I love running and going through that is definitely hard to deal with.
@@nicksymmonds Ok thanks. Thinking about it I have 2 coaches a xc and track one. My xc coach has us do milage in the summer as well as do interval workouts in order to train for aau track nationals. He tapors us and everything (around late July) without any break into full xc season where we have to peak in early November. My track coach has us do interval workouts attempting to hit a certain pace 4 days a week for 6 months. Thinking about it now I think I see why I tend to burnout
Deklizer how are your easy runs? Maybe your running too hard on those days and your not recovering fast enough. Your probably running too hard at practice and not leaving enough for race day. They should also give you a 2 week break between seasons to avoid that. “Active rest”
@@AvidRunner437 Sometimes too hard I'll admit but for the most part I take it easy and not push on easy days. My year goes like Train for aau track in summer for three months peak then immediately begin transitioning to more milage to train for xc to peak three months later for xc state (or at least I'm supposed to but I didn't ). 1 week off inactive rest until 6 months HS track training. Another 1 week inactive training and cycle continues. But I think the so called burnout I experience is much more mental than it is physical.
Deklizer blaming it on mentality can only go so far. Your body needs to rest too. I think AAU should just be a fun thing to do over summer. Not so much about racing to PR. I think you only have a few great races in a season of xc and track.
Oh! Please learn to "Shuffle Dance" for fun and great exercise? It'll help your quickness for the sprints and looks great if you're out on a dancefloor.
I get so nervous before my events I hate it. I get so nervous the day before and it sucks. My meet is in an hour and I woke up having a 140 heart rate because even my DREAMS were about swimming and I am so scared.
@@humanhamster16 try very hard to chill out. eat before you race, it really does make you go faster. A trick I use during racing is to pretend something is chasing you (i think of a shark). You have to try to believe it or it wont work. Make sure to warm down after each race. I hope it goes well!
I have this similar situation once it time to race my heart will start to beat faster than normal that before line up am out of breath so nervous. That when i run the race my body just don't obey me again that i finish last
My problem is that last week I had my first 100 meter race and I fell because I looked to my left and tomorrow I’ll have another 100 meter race and I’m so scared to fall again and I can feel the adrenaline already
Will answer a new questions every Monday, DM me your questions on Instagram (@NickSymmonds) if you want me to answer one!
I get anxiety before workout runs and a little more race day. Even to the point where I can’t sleep at night.
gotta learn to control that!
You cant do anything about a race until you warmup, so dont waste your energy worrying about something that has not happened yet
ME
Same
It’s midnight on the dot, which is kind of funny, the night before a meet day. I can’t sleep. Relatable ash… 😭
I appreciate nick symonds being down to earth and honest, he was a great athlete I respect his attitude. Thanks for the tips
thanks for the kind message! Appreciate you!!!

Yes!
I'm so happy I ran into this comment because I've been feeling the same way so reading this helps a lot.
I used to think of every race as going to an execution. When i gained confidence i still had the fear but i used the fear.

I look at it as an opportunity and stay walking around and cheer for the team takes your mind off of it.
yes, but if you still have to race don't be on your feet! Be resting up in the bleachers, you can still cheer from there :D
Nick Symmonds I usually just sit in the bleachers.
Whenever I run a big race I choke
it takes practice to deal with the pressure! You will get better and better at it.
This helped me loads. I get the nerves badly but it’s before a motorbike race rather than a run.
I run faster when im nervous cause im really nervous in front of big crowds lol
You can't breathe be as consistently and if messes you up..

Thanks sir for your tip
