Campfire Recipe: Pieiron cottage pie -- instant mashed potato magic! 🥔🔥

- Shepherd's pie gets all the press, but I'm not much of a lamb fan, so for me, cottage pie is where it's at. No matter what the filling, I am a big fan of potatoes in any format. This pie iron recipe uses instant mashed potatoes, but you could use sliced potatoes, if you have the time and energy.
All the gear I use is over here on my Amazon Storefront:

Looks delish!! Can’t wait for the Pie Iron Chef cookbook! 🔥🏕️
Looks delish…. Only thing missing is a layer of cheese - oozing all over the meat and veggies 😉
Yum! Cheese is always a good idea 😋🧀
Looks appetizing. From the glow of your shoulders, upper body, and face, I'd say you've been in the sun. Keep having fun in the great outdoors. Waiting on another camping video.
Editing the next installment now, and you’ll see how I acquired that sweet sunburn 🥵😄
I would take a packet of brown gravy mix to make and pour over. Looks very yummy. I love pie iron creations!
It's so funny how many people have suggested adding gravy! I never put gravy on my cottage pie, because it's on the inside. So that's new to me, but it must be something that most people do *the more you know* 😄
Well, another tasty looking pie-iron creation. Yum! We're also fans of the Gardein "meat" crumbles. I might just have to buy myself a
pie-iron. I've also owned a Napier Sportz Cove for several years. I love it for making my inside space feel so much larger and for an outside sitting space with room for a couple of chairs underneath. I really enjoy your adventures with Gunther in camping, and cooking . Thanks for sharing them with us.🙂👍
Yes! I love the breakfast sausage and chorizo crumbles veggie options as well. 😋
Can’t wait to practice this one on my propane camp stove. Unfortunately there are large fires here so we’re rightfully under fire ban. Thanks for the great ideas, keep em coming! 🥾🏔🇨🇦❤️
I just got my stovetop sandwich maker, and I have been having a blast trying out pieiron recipes at home. It’ll be featured in my mini kitchen tour video, whenever I manage to get that one out. 😊
Oh YES!!!! Cottage pie is one of my fav dishes ever! so I definitely stand behind this one, looks DELICIOUS!
That looks amazing! I've been wanting to try that with my pie iron. Thanks for sharing. 😊
You had me at cottage pie 🥧
Wow!!
That dish looks yummy!!!
You outdid urself this time!
So fun! Great videos , getting a couple pie irons asap!😄☀️
Thank you and welcome to the madness 😂
Looks sooooo good! Definitely adding this to my list!
That looks delicious! Yum!
Great recipe, thank you!
I like the idea of using the Gardein crumble. Good idea using the small packet of instant mashed. I'll definitely add cheese. Estimates on cooking times would be helpful. We will definitely be trying these!
I haven’t been including times because there are sooo many variables when cooking over fire. 😅 But in the future, I’ll at least add how long it took for me, at the time, at least to provide a frame of reference. 😊👍🏼
Looks delicious...though we call the dish shepherds pie here in Michigan
My understanding is that shepherd's pie has a lamb filling, and cottage pie is beef. Since this is veggie crumbles, maybe it's gardener's pie? 😄
Looks so good!
EUREKA!! IT WAS A SUCCESS 🙌 Great job 🎉 and a little nibble for the goodest boy💙🐾
Always! 🐶

Thank you for differentiating "cottage" pie from "shepherd's" pie. In Great Britain regions shepherd's pie would always be made most likely from lamb or mutton, as cattle were working animals that would not be slaughtered as a general food source.
And don't get me started on "Chilean Sea Bass"...😊
I was aware of the distinction, but not the origin - so thanks for that!
Damn it! I'm hungry now!😂
This looks delicious 🤤 ❤
Okay I'm here. Been waiting for this one. 👍 ❤ 🤙🥧
That did not disappoint! Home run Martha. I loved the meat substitute. 👍
I used to rest of the package as taco filling for my dinners this past week. I notice absolutely no difference from it's mimicking.
And wahlah! I put cheese in the potatoes in my shepherds pie which is pretty much the same thing however may stick in a pie iron so cheese could go into the "meat" mixture? Flour in the "meat and veg" but you already said you didn't want to do that. This is a good no fuss easy short cut recipe!
I was concerned that, enveloped in potatoes, the flour wouldn’t cook enough and you get that raw floury taste, but I could be wrong 😑
I bet you could totally do: potatoes, cheese, filling, cheese, potatoes 🤔
UA-cam was not feeding me your vids. I was starting to worry. lol Two missed videos waiting for me on your home page. Yay! Happy to see everyone out having a good time.
Welcome back!!
Great idea! Definitely going to do this! PS I need that cat trivet
Be sure to take the rubber feet off, if you use on the stove, like I do. 😄 a.co/d/f2VZNxH
@@ShoestringMartha Thank you!
have found 1/2 to 2/3rds of the water gives a good thick mashed tater mix. mom would make a version of potatoe pancakes while we where growing up. she only used mashed potatoes, formed into a burger size patty. browned in a little bit of oil till heated through. you talking of putting the mix into your waffle iron sounds good & interesting experiment to try. a north european verision is called a pasty. the only difference is you use diced up poatoe in the meat mix. or rutabegga / turnip. the crust is usually pie dough. this allowed miners to pack one or 2 in their lunch boxes for a cold lunch. 1 std pie crust rd = 1 pasty. your neighbors(the birds) want some dinner as well.
My gran used to make potato pancakes! I think egg and a little flour was added too. Served with sour cream or apple sauce 😋
@@ShoestringMartha what your talking about maybe the standard german potatoe pancake. what mom did was more what you call a potatoe patty. just using say 2 day old mashed potatoes. formed into patties. season with salt pepper an heat up. suggest you goggle zup'z up in ely, mn for some interesting reading / shopping. potatoe sausage, swedish sausage, blood sausage, pasties all varities. another is karlmarchecks in downtown minneapolis for excellent polishes.
Oh that looks goooood. I’ve got a mountain house beef stew…hmmm… I’m thinking it can work. Strain off excess water….
Side note…how do you like your Napier?
I bet it totally would work! Love my Sportz Cove. Perfect for warm weather, and even though it doesn't add any floor space, it still makes the cargo area seem roomier.
WOW that looked so good! What is the difference between Shepards pie and Cottage pie?
I believe shepherds pie is made with lamb and cottage pie is beef, but these days the terms are typically used interchangeably .
That looked so yummy! Did you end up saucing it at all? Did the potatoes seem super dry?
None needed! Those instant mashed potatoes have some sort of fake butteriness involved, and including the tomato paste and soy sauce on the filling helped juice things up too.
@@ShoestringMartha good to know. I’ve only eaten those potatoes once and I had to drink so much water! But I can see how the soy would help. Thanks! Looking forward to the camp video too. 👍🏻
Have you seen the water bottle trick for sucking up egg yolks ???
I have, but completely forgot about it! That would have totally saved me!! 😅
@@ShoestringMartha I think you still did great. I’m now an addict for your videos. Yay. Thanks again. Julie :)
🥰
Now pour some packaged velveeta over it youll never see the booboo
😂 Cheez is always the answer 🧀
Looks delish and fun to make!
