Thank you for the video, it helped me through the process of adding a second SSD. I did have to pry a little bit though, so for future videos (which I have not checked) a view of where the clips are could be useful to some.
On the aide benchmark you said the new ram is quicker but the stock ram has the bigger numbers, did you label it incorrectly or is more mb/s not better when it reads and writes that wouldn't make sense but the stck ram has higher reading and writing
For 2023 Legion 5i pro only the Intel i9 version supports 5600MHz RAM but the AMD version supports 5200MHz so that version too supports faster RAM speeds. The i7 and i5 versions only supports 4800MHz.
Hi, thanks for a very instructive video! As you were booting from the secondary drive bay, rather than from the primary bay, did you have to make any setting changes? Thanks!
If I'm not mistaken... you have to enable xmp for intel, and expo for amd in the bios in order to get the full RAM feequency of 5600. But lenovo does not allow you to do so, for whatever reason they don't give the end user access to memory speed overclocking in their bios. It's unfortunate, lenovo is my favorite gaming laptop brand, but they are leaving basic pc functionality on the table with this decision. Memory overclocking is basically standard practice at this point as the advertised RAM speeds when purchasing RAM is the overclocked speed..
For heat dissipation in Gen 4 SSD drives, what model and thickness can you fit without altering the lid closure? Being efficient in cooling. If possible post the link or name.
i have a legion slim 5 and so far im loving it since i don't play many games i snagged a samsung 980 Pro 2TB Nvme M.2 SSD plus i don't feel like Upgrading The Stock SSD Until ik that best buy will get more in so until then ill be rocking the stock 500 gigs and a 980 pro 2tb i am looking into a ram upgrade if possible while it came with 16 i prefer 32 or 64 if possible.
I believe the Slim 5 RAM is soldered, so you're permanently stuck with 16gb. **Correction** the 14.5" OLED Slim 5 has soldered RAM, unknown about the 16" Slim 5.
Thank you for your very clear explanations! When changing SSD cards, you place a little black square to protect them when disconnecting. This might be a silly question, but where can I get one?
I know this is months old but thank you. I’m upgrading my nvme in my new Pro 7i so I was looking for videos on how to get the bottom off. I was seeing people use pry tools to get the bottom off and I was afraid I’d mar the finish in some way doing that. I ordered the same ifixit kit as you so I can use the suction cup. Thank you!
always happy to help. I have tried pry tools before and ended up damaging clips, suction cup is so much easier but may take you a couple of attempts to get a good seal and pull. Try both corners if it doesn't work on first try
did you have to get into the BIOS to do anything after cloning the boot drive and restarting the computer with the bigger drive as boot drive? Or did everything just work as expected without having to get into the BIOS after switching the smaller boot drive to the bigger SN850x?
everything works as expected and it even extends the partition to the larger drive so all space is ready to use. You do not need to go into BIOS or Disk manager, just boot and enjoy :)
Hi! really awesome video explaining a lot very clearly. Im thinking about swapping the RAM to Kingston fury 2x 32 and just like you said the price is almost identical so might as well get the 5800MHz. But after instalment, do i have to enable them or will it just work and show up in the task manager ? Thanks a lot!
Once you install the ram it will auto show up and work as expected. Even if the ram can’t run at the max rated speed, it will run at faster timings. Some people with the i9 version have 5600 working!
Really helpful video! I have the same laptop, Lenovo Legion Pro 5i 16IRX8. The RAM it came with shows 5600Mhz for me. I've been wanting to upgrade my storage and RAM as well. Thanks!
Hi Mash, Thanks for the awesome video. I have the Legion_Pro_5_16ARX8 and I download the spec sheets. I am confused because the spec say max ram at 32 (2X16) and 1t ssd. I would so rather get the 64 ram and 4t. Am I missing something? I would really appreciate the answer before I buy the upgrades.
Ignore Lenovo, they just haven't validated anything higher. The Ram and SSDs I tested work perfectly, just make sure you buy the same spec models I linked.

I have also upgraded mine with 7745hx, 2*8GB 1Rx16 -> 2*16 1Rx8 and improved memory writing speed by 15%… unfortunately the ram overclocking has no manual settings and it set my 5600MHz ram to 6000 MHz, possibly without timings adjustments, and under the stress system reboots sometimes… had to deactivate overclocking for ram :(
@MashITTech should I upgrade both of my RAM slots with the some type of RAM or it don't really matter. I am asking this because I have a 1x16 gb RAM laying around my house and my new legion pro 5i came with 2x8 gb ram so I am not sure if it's a good idea to upgrade only one channel.

I have a 16ARX18 with Ryzen 7745HX. I'm currently considering upgrading each part. Will the 16GB x2 5600 Crucial memory work? And will a 4TB x2 8TB M.2 SSD work? I'm concerned about the possibility that only slot 1 of M.2 SSD cannot be equipped with a double-sided of M.2 SSD.
I haven't tested the crucial, only the fury kit so I can't comment on that. With regards to the SSD, I am pretty sure the slots were exactly the same so you are limited to 1 single sided and 1 double sided. The P3 Plus is the only single sided 4tb ssd I could find: geni.us/WqAzy9C
@MashITTech Hi, first of all, thanks for this great video 👍 I am about to buy Legion 5 Pro and I would like to ask you for suggestions on which 2tb ssds I can buy for my primary slots ? Which are single sidded and has DRAM? Any brand suggestions? Thank You!
Most 2tb are single sided but the two I recommend are 980/990 pro from Samsung or the WD sn850x. I prefer the 850x as it’s slightly faster. I linked the 4tb, but you can change the capacity on the amazon page. They have some good prime day deals going at the moment
the sn850x 4tb has chips on the back of the ssd. there is not enough clearance on slot1 for it to fit so you will need to use a single sided ssd like most 2tb ssd or the 4tb Samsung 990 pro
hi mash i have a question. i have a legion slim 5 and i want to fill my secondary ssd slot with a 2tb ssd, but in the product description its written up to 1tb per slot. do my laptop still compatible with a single slot 2tb ssd?
sorry for the delay! yes, 2tb will easily fit and so will most 4tb. the secondary slot has more room so even a double sided SSD will fit like the SN850x 4tb that I used in the video
hello! my question is can u just install 1 ram to the empty slot and leave the already ram just as it is( also the install RAM does it hast to be the same brand or can u install a different brand) thanks
@MashITTech What about your high performance SSD temperatures in the laptop? I read on Reddit that quite some people complain about their Gen 4 M.2's throttling under load because the SSD's get way too hot in laptops and if you have one of these as BOOT, the OS gets unstable? Did you experience any of that?
no issues at all! I have done extensive testing on Gen 4 drives on this years laptops and yes, if you do not use a heatsink they throttle like crazy, but with the heatsink provided on this Lenovo (and alienware/razer/XMG I have tested) there has been no tempterature issues with the provided heatsink used. The WD 850x is one of the hottest running drives too, the Samsung 980s I have used run way cooler but are only available in 2tb max :(
@@MashITTech thank you so much for your quick response! >Subbed! 😉 I plan to use the 990 PRO 4TB as boot drive since it is single sided and has a great performance.... and maybe even two of them in my Legion Pro 7i.
oh wow, I didn't realise they had made a 990 pro 4tb single sided! that's the holy grail, going to see if I can grab one (I have tested the lexar nm790 4tb and crucial p3plus 4tb single sided drives and they are both very average performers, fine for a games drive but not an OS drive)

Very helpful video! Question : I've bought a data XPG 4tb ssd, installed it everything OK. But sometimes, when the laptop is idling, the ssd becomes invisible, it's just gone on windows 11 and I won't see it again, unless I restart the laptop. Sometimes it can be seen for 2 days, other times it can become invisible after 1h. Do you have any ideas what can cause the issue? Cheers
Were you upgrading system with the I7 or I9 cpu? I did not hear anything specific about this in the video, though I’d imagine this could explain the throttling of memory speed you experienced.
I understand updating the bios to 36ww or later will generally fix the speed limit, at least for 32 gb. For 64 gb, speed may still be throttled at 5200.
Hello! Thanks for the review, but it seems to have shut me down in looking up again, i've been looking everywhere and on forums for my the exact build i got which is the stock version I5-13500hx - 4060, 500gb of storage & with 8x2 (16gb of ram), are the upgrades still limited to 32gb of ram max and 1-2tb for this system or could i go further? I wouldn't want this thing heating up to the point of burning and not working sadly.. Thanks for the reply if so and would love to know the limits as i've set my eyes on what i thought might be best which are : Kingston FURY Impact 32Go (2x16Go) 4800Mhz & Samsung SSD 990 Pro M.2 - 2Tb
That was exactly the pro 5i that I got :) Ram wise you can upgrade to 64gb fury and although it wont hit 5600mhz I would still buy that kit instead of the 4800 because the timings are faster (unless there is a big price difference in your region, in the UK there is not much difference). SSD wise, you can run up to 2x 4tb SSD thanks to the new Samsung 990 pro single sided SSDs (recently covered these drives in a video if you are interested. Hope this helps but if you have more questions please ask.

Hi I'm new to pc and idk why I need to clone ssd for upgrading ram because you decided to do both ssd and ram upgrade at the same time so I'm not sure why you need to do something because of the fact that you're doing two things
If all you are doing is the ram upgrade you don’t need to clone the ssd. If you just upgrade ram, change the sticks and close the laptop back up, there is nothing more to do 👍
@@MashITTechhello thank you for the video, I have a question about upgrading the SSD. If I'm just putting a new 2 TB SSD into the empty bay, do I need to put anything on it before installing it? Or can I just install it straight out of the box?

i used to do this too but upon checking the prices now of upgrades during ordering is cheaper than buying the upgrade components. Or perhaps it's where I live now. The retail prices here for electronics are more expensive and limited comprated to US.

the RAM upgrade is silly, except people need more than 16GB or whatever ships with your laptop, but upgrading for the speed is really a waste of money. good tip for the Crucial P3 ssd. I don't know if my laptop requires it, since I bought another model, but I'll see. I bought the 6800h + 3070 , probably the previous generation. fast enough for me, lol.
it may be silly for a lot of people for sure but it is a necessity for me due to my work load and I know a lot of people will want to know what the max size it can handle (hope that makes sense). And yes the speed is pointless but as the 5600mhz kit was almost the same price as the 4800mhz in the UK it made sense to try it

It is always really hard choosing as every laptop has its compromises! The x16 looks better than the legion, has better build quality, lighting, speakers and a smaller PSU. The legion is cheaper and has much better performance, a better and brighter screen and better port layout. From my use this year of the blade 16, x16, legion pro 7i and psi I personally would take the Legion if price is important or the blade 16 if money is no object :)
@MashITTech thank you so much for your response looking at multiple reviews and taking your suggestion into consideration I will go with the x 16 as its premium feeling and having a powerful machine is amazing to have the only issue for me is the ram is limited to 32gb but hopefully it does not become an obstacle in the future ty again mash IT jeep up the amazing videos 🤩
It's actually the processor that limits the performance of the ddr5 ram, not Intel in general. If you get the i7-13700hx, the max you can get is 4800 mhz with the ddr5 ram. If you you got an i9 or a 14 gen i7 processor you get the full 5200-5600 mhz. You can say it's a douche move by Intel. That's for sure.
I am getting a Legion Pro 5 with Ryzen 7 7745HX and RTX 4070 but it has a 512 GB SSD. To begin with, I will add a 1TB SSD to the current one as I already have one but I would guess that even 1.5 TB will fill up pretty fast.
Any new on if the spacing is the same on the Legion 7i pro gen 8? Does it fit doubled sided 4 TB on both slots with the 7pro or does only 1 slot support doubled sided like the 5?
yes you can but becareful which you buy as per the video. a Full double sided drive like the Seagate 4tb firecuda 530 will not fit.
Thanks!
nope, it will boot from which ever drive has the windows boot drive :)
Awesome video. Thanks!
I am a bit confused about the SSD! Did you add 4TB SDD for each slot?
It appears that he did
Great vid! Love the review!!
Thanks so much 👍
Thank you for your very clear explanations! When changing SSD cards, you place a little black square to protect them when disconnecting. This might be a silly question, but where can I get one?
Which generation is this lenovo, have you checked the BIOS if there are any settings you can change in order to recognise correctly the ram
Hi,
Have you enabled XMP in your bios?
To ensure correct RAM bar frequencies.
Thank you
I know this is months old but thank you.
Helpful vidoe mate. What can go into the 2nd SSD bay? One or two sided SSad stick?
the first bay is single sided only, the second bay managed a double sided ssd :)
did you have to get into the BIOS to do anything after cloning the boot drive and restarting the computer with the bigger drive as boot drive? Or did everything just work as expected without having to get into the BIOS after switching the smaller boot drive to the bigger SN850x?
everything works as expected and it even extends the partition to the larger drive so all space is ready to use. You do not need to go into BIOS or Disk manager, just boot and enjoy :)
Thanks for the video! really usefull.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi! really awesome video explaining a lot very clearly.
@@MashITTech Thanks for answering, and yes i meant 5600MHz ;)

Really helpful video! I have the same laptop, Lenovo Legion Pro 5i 16IRX8. The RAM it came with shows 5600Mhz for me. I've been wanting to upgrade my storage and RAM as well. Can you guide me what is the max I can go for in SSD? Does it support Gen 5 SSDs as well? Also if you could name any good high-speed (5600-6000Mhz) RAM 64/96gb RAM kits and SSDs, I'd be big help. What model of laptop is that? is it Legion 5i pro 16IRX8?
Hi Mash, Thanks for the awesome video. I have the Legion_Pro_5_16ARX8 and I download the spec sheets. I am confused because the spec say max ram at 32 (2X16) and 1t ssd. I would so rather get the 64 ram and 4t. Am I missing something? I would really appreciate the answer before I buy the upgrades.
Ignore Lenovo, they just haven't validated anything higher. The Ram and SSDs I tested work perfectly, just make sure you buy the same spec models I linked.

@@MashITTech Hi, sorry to bother, but just to clarify. Will the AMD model support 64GB of RAM as well? Have you/could you test it if you still have the laptop (Ryzen 7945hx). I am about to purchase it, but would like to be absolutely sure. On the crucial memory upgrade website, for example, the 64GB ram is supported for the intel version, but not for the amd.
@@daniloorlando2998 Cool for asking this question, I just purchased the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 16APH8 (AMD version) and I was also on Crucial website which only showed max RAM of 32GB 5600Hz & Max SSD of 2TB. Just curious if I can go up to 64GB RAM and 4TB SSD

Will the timings improve?
Please reply
So you can use the left side ssd slot as primary to windows?
I have also upgraded mine with 7745hx, 2*8GB 1Rx16 -> 2*16 1Rx8 and improved memory writing speed by 15%… unfortunately the ram overclocking has no manual settings and it set my 5600MHz ram to 6000 MHz, possibly without timings adjustments, and under the stress system reboots sometimes… had to deactivate overclocking for ram :(
If I were to get the WD SN850x should I get it with the heatsink or without? Adding an SSD to my PS5 is my only experience with this kind of stuff.

Battery sucks man get like 2 hours on a full charge
Thanks, is the Slim 5 AMD version 2023 also working with 64Gb of ram?
Is the 2TB SN850X have double side?
@MashITTech should I upgrade both of my RAM slots with the some type of RAM or it don't really matter. I am asking this because I have a 1x16 gb RAM laying around my house and my new legion pro 5i came with 2x8 gb ram so I am not sure if it's a good idea to upgrade only one channel.
it is fine to do that and the ram will run at the speed of the slowest ram you install.
@@MashITTech ok thanks 👍

I have the same 16ARX8 does it make sense to use fury ram ddr5 6400MT/s or the cpu would limit it to 5600 ? Thnx for your time
Can all models of the Legion Pro 5 or 5i be upgraded to a maximum of 64GB of RAM and 4TB of SSD?
@MashITTech Hi, first of all, thanks for this great video 👍
I am about to buy Legion 5 Pro and I would like to ask you for suggestions on which 2tb ssds I can buy for my primary slots ? Which are single sidded and has DRAM?
Any brand suggestions?
Thank You!
Most 2tb are single sided but the two I recommend are 980/990 pro from Samsung or the WD sn850x. I prefer the 850x as it’s slightly faster. I linked the 4tb, but you can change the capacity on the amazon page. They have some good prime day deals going at the moment

I had 13th gen but they are essentially the same as 14th gen was just a refresh
I could not understand why you cannot install the "WD SN850x fast 4tb SSD" in the first slot? Do both of those slots support both 2242 and 2280?
the sn850x 4tb has chips on the back of the ssd. there is not enough clearance on slot1 for it to fit so you will need to use a single sided ssd like most 2tb ssd or the 4tb Samsung 990 pro
hi mash i have a question. i have a legion slim 5 and i want to fill my secondary ssd slot with a 2tb ssd, but in the product description its written up to 1tb per slot. do my laptop still compatible with a single slot 2tb ssd?
sorry for the delay! yes, 2tb will easily fit and so will most 4tb. the secondary slot has more room so even a double sided SSD will fit like the SN850x 4tb that I used in the video
hello! my question is can u just install 1 ram to the empty slot and leave the already ram just as it is( also the install RAM does it hast to be the same brand or can u install a different brand)

yes you sure can. it will work fine but run at the speed of the slowest chip
>Subbed! 😉
I plan to use the 990 PRO 4TB as boot drive since it is single sided and has a great performance.... and maybe even two of them in my Legion Pro 7i.
oh wow, I didn't realise they had made a 990 pro 4tb single sided! that's the holy grail, going to see if I can grab one (I have tested the lexar nm790 4tb and crucial p3plus 4tb single sided drives and they are both very average performers, fine for a games drive but not an OS drive)
damn, they are not out in the UK yet :( guess that is why I missed it!

Cheers
oh wow, that is really odd. is it used as the secondary drive?
@@MashITTech yes, just for storage. The primary one is a 2 tb adata, gen 4
Were you upgrading system with the I7 or I9 cpu? I did not hear anything specific about this in the video, though I’d imagine this could explain the throttling of memory speed you experienced.
It’s actually the i5 which could be the reason for the lower speed for sure but I don’t have an i7 or i9 to trst
Legion Pro 5 vs Legion Pro 5i ??
the RAM upgrade is silly, except people need more than 16GB or whatever ships with your laptop, but upgrading for the speed is really a waste of money.
good tip for the Crucial P3 ssd.

My laptop is loading up fine but does this mean something negative happened to my circuit board or is everything okay. I want to know if there anything that happened or if its just the battery reconnecting and I'm overreacting
Don't panic, although that is unusual I expect it was just inductance where the battery came into contact with the pins. The laptop is booting so you obviously didn't connect the battery incorrectly and just make sure you test the laptop on battery only to ensure it was plugged in fine

Hey I'm in the middle of upgrading my ram do i still need to disconnect the battery I don't trust my self not to break something
You should disconnect the battery to do any work on the laptop. That said I very often don’t as chances of damaging it are very minimal.
Hey @Mash IT very useful video…. A quick one although a late one … can a Crucial P5 plus fit in a primary slot
It sure can :)
@@MashITTech cheers Boss
would you like to try the 96g memory?
Eh I tried upgrading the ram with the same laptop and now the screen won’t turn on.
is this the same for the regular pro 5 ( Lenovo 16" Legion Pro 5 Gaming Laptop i9/32GB/1TB RTX 4060 )
Yes, but the ram should run faster in the i9 than my i5 👍
Ok great, thank you for your help
