      I have this exact laptop and am looking at upgrading the memory from the stock 16gb kit. Is the memory in your description link the dual-rank kit that was performing highest on average and kept the 3200 frequency without xmp? is there a link to the same in a 32gb kit?

      Amazing video!, still can't believe they did not test the 16GB 2Rx8 + 16GB 2Rx8 option, I believe is the most reasonable upgrade path for the dual channel 16GB with slow memory.

    Jarrod, I want to say that "I can't thank you enough." I know this was an immense amount of work. It would be increasingly invaluable to release the full Zen Timings screen grab for each kit listed. There is *a little* amount of info out there as to what bits of the timings matter the most. However, you've just done the most comprehensive testing on this topic bar none. Rounding that out would be providing the said screen grabs. Let me know if you want any kickback for this cause I don't mind doing so, of which I'm on a discord server you're in.
    All in all, still: Thank you for this testing. I know it took you a fair amount of time to do this work, thank you.

    For those who wanna get a 32GB memory configuration: I bought 2 sticks of 16GB Kingston 2Rx8, 3200Mhz, CL20, code "KF432S20IB1/16" for my Legion 5 Pro (Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3060), did no gaming benchmarks, but my AIDA64 speeds were:
    - Read: 46151 MB/s
    - Write: 45694 MB/s
    - Copy: 43409MB/s
    - Latency: 78.1 ns
    This is in line with the top 1-2 results from Jared, so I'm expecting peak performance in gaming with this kit.

    Those 10-20% overall gains (subjective to usage circumstances) are what you would expect jumping from say a rtx 3070 to 3080.

      Even at 1440p, there are still games that benefit from having better RAM like racing sims and fast-paced shooters to name a few. Having faster RAM will also affect your 1% lows which highly affects how smooth or stuttery your gameplay would be. It isn't all about avg. framerates all the time.

      @@coolerdan446 I mean sure, but say you have 16gb of 1rx8 ram and you spend $200 or so on 32gb of 2rx8 ram. • @coolerdan446
      @coolerdan446 3 роки тому

    Is there an explanation for why the memory latency increase with better memory? It seems counter intuitive

    • @Invertedzero
      @Invertedzero 2 роки тому

      Yeah I upgraded to 64GB but seem to have slightly worse latency using a few different benchmarking tools. I assumed it was a minor consequence of having such a large amount of memory, but I can see the equivalent best performing 16GB also has the highest latency...

    I had 16Gb (2x8Gb) 1Rx16 Samsung 3200Mhz, CL22 installed by default.
    I installed 32Gb (2x16Gb) 1Rx8 Kingston 3200Mhz, CL22 (exact model: kvr32s22s8/16).
    I have tested RAM speed in Aida64.
    RAM read speed changed from 43 000 to 47 000 (by 4 000).
    RAM write speed changed from 35 000 to 45 000 (by 10 000 !).
    I haven't tested FPS in games, because I need it for graphics programs, but the speed increase is high and the only difference is 16x to 8x RAM. It absolutely corresponds to the test in this video. Thank you, Jarrod.

    Looks like I dodged a bullet, at the time when I buy my laptop I had the option to either buy a 8GB for 12GB flex mode as tested here, or 4+4=8GB, the shop clerk recommend me to get another 4GB for compatibility, I decided to believe in Intel once and picked up an 8GB stick, no problem for 3 years.

    Question/Suggestion:
    Have you ever considered to show the standard deviation in your average plots? This would be some good additional information. You could display the stdv over the average in the same way you display 1%-lows for fps.

    I would love it if you started including Forza in your tests. Really, doing both Horizon 4 and 5, would be great.
    My OMEN 15 (10750H, 3070, 32gb 2933 cl17 2Rx8) runs Horizon 4 cranked fully at around 130-150 fps, yet FH5 I have on Ultra Textures but high for everything else, and I can get 100fps. Yet, I have it capped at 75 to reduce studder in dense areas.
    But I just feel those games would help many more people gauge their purchase options. They are 2 of the most popular games on Xbox Game Pass, in the US anyway.
    I am interested in getting something a bit better myself and I'd love those to compare. I would really like this same laptop, but with a 11800h and 130 watt 3070. I have a 300hz screen and haven't found one with the 11th gen yet. The OMEN desktops...... I would not recommend those.
    Update! I found the 11800h with the 300hz screen!!! Finally! too bad its still a 100watt GPU...

    This is the reason to avoid Asus and Dell/Alienware’s most laptops due to their embedded memory practices not only harm your future upgradability, but also they choose the lowest components: 1Rx16 to embedded, totally irresponsible.

    People in the Legion discord keep asking for XMP support, but there really hasn't been any statement yet from Lenovo if they are working on a bios update to enable it. What Lenovo did say is that they are very close to releasing fan speed control as part of the Vantage software and from the screen shots there will be rgb style graphics meaning a 10-15% fps and performance boost!

    The undisputed "Laptop King". Jarrod is a man on a mission. "What mission"? you may ask. A mission to inform every one of us on all of the things to take into consideration when purchasing a gaming/creator laptop and how to get the most out of it without spending unnecessary money. Jarrod, you are the man. Hands down the most informative and enjoyable videos in the laptop/gaming space. I eagerly look on UA-cam everyday to see if you've dropped a new video. I already purchased 2 laptops this year, and your videos have helped me out immensely in making my decisions (Legion 5i Pro RTX 3060 & Legion 7i RTX 3070). Kudos to you and keep the content coming.
