The Search for the Missing DOOM Album

- In 2017 a 15-song series called The Missing Notebook Rhymes was announced by DOOM and Adult Swim. It was going to be distributed through Adult Swim as part of their Singles Program, every Tuesday since August 7, Adult Swim had delivered a track from DOOMS archives but just as quickly as the hype built the project was mysteriously shelved with no explanation by DOOM or the network.
MASS APPEAL contacted Adult Swim about this development and received the following statement from an Adult Swim spokesperson: “Adult Swim is ending our relationship with DOOM, and thus, the remaining Missing Notebook Rhymes will, unfortunately, have to remain…missing. We are glad to have had the chance to provide the previous free tracks to our fans.”
Since 2017 very little has been unearthed. In this video, I aim to find out where the Notebook Rhymes ended up as well as exactly why DOOM and AS cut ties.

hey doom use to draw comic books and thats what a lot of his personas were based off of. he was also very good to his fans and that blue head diver guy was a personnel friend and fan who wanted to see if he was good at rap. we had to censor a lot of his stuff on adult swim and they promised him prime time on tv but kept not putting him on and or kept giving him bad air times so he got sick of them. we never finished the missing rhymes and what they were was his old songs but basically remastered to be complete. he never cared about the 40k because he paid it towards his house and was very sick. this was not well known but it was what he died from. the ones uploaded were half complete and being worked on at the time. he didnt really care about finishing anything because yes he did not want to work and lose money just to pay a record label back
Goes to show you how beloved DOOM is that we still want more music from him even with such a big discography already

MC Serch has a podcast called “Do You Remember When” and he has a 10 parter about DOOM and this came up and has an entire episode about it. Definitely worth a listen.

@@1aml3g3nd13 back in 2006, when their partnership started and they did what would eventually preface their Chrome Children tour a Friend and I were in Austin for SXSW. We had badges, which at the time were only $600. When we walked into the convention center to pick them up, the TV’s had a blue background, and a little egg with a bird hatching. It was the beginning of Twitter- for at the time BlackBerry. I’m saying that, to say this. For private or surprise shows, you could either pre submit to get in, or D/L install Twitter(which would SMS Text You) where Pop-Up shows would be. We got into a few of them, but NONE better than the Adult Swim/Stones Throw pop-up off Red River which featured a full length banner of the entire crew- the one he performed in the Vick Jersey. Looking back, it was absolutely madness, but I’ll be damned if even thought we didn’t realize it at the time their collaboration made complete sense. Amazing show, thankful I got to experience it, in its infancy.

I used to work for a venue that was also owned by a big production company, and my two experiences with Doom were the time he was booked at the venue and apparently never showed and the time he was booked at the festival run by the production company, where it was announced he'd cancelled but then he came out anyway.

Some of those songs on the Metal Face soundcloud are demos and recordings from DOOM featured projects. One is the GTA FlyLo track he did and the other is a demo of nautical depth from the Czarface collab

I cant say that ive listened to all of the seven released tracks, but i heard NEGUS from this project and that track ended up on the posthumous Sean Price album Imperius Rex, (released the same year) so i wonder if the remaining unreleased tracks are hiding on albums as a feature

Thank you for clarifying the remaining Missing tracks. I don't think it's a coincidence that the soundcloud uploads bring the total to 15. You're rad. Do a video on the history on Monsta Island Czars. He shouted them out on the 12 inch version of Gas Drawls, which I know was pressed in 97, but I believe that song existed in 1994. "Who bigged 'em up Monster Isle? (Who dat?)"

Highly highly highly recommend listening to Serch's podcast _Did I Ever Tell You the One About Doom._ It has interviews with the folks at Adult Swim, and explains in more detail why that relationship ended

Although DOOM never released a final “album”, he still had a lot of great tracks towards the end of his career that could be turned into double, possibly triple compilation albums; Lunch Break, Lil MFz, his work with Muggs/Westside Gunn etc.
I could completely understand why Jason Demarco would work with DOOM again. I was a kid when I started listening to him and the kind of tales he weaves with his rhymes are like hobo magic. I always imagined him as some kind of like rhyming sage who liked cartoons like me. One of my favorite supervillains is Doctor Doom so seeing his motif I instantly knew he was going to be some kind of legendary person. I think it took the Occult Hymn release they did for adult swim to really put me on to his music. If I could time travel I would have seen him when he came to Austin for the MM..Food tour. That was the last CD I ever bought for a physical release. It even smelled good and came with a DVD with all of the songs from the tour.
Since he's gone there's actually an infinite number of lost DOOM albums.

the initial theory that it was all a hoax from the beginning made complete sense at the time since most if not all the songs of the songs were previously released songs, even if a couple weren't that well known. and a few of em were from other people albums.
so eventually i just started using the 2nd half of "the missing notebook rhymes" as a playlist for newer collabs (the ones with westside gunn, dj muggs, mach & droog, and flying lotus) and a few older ones like ray gun with ghostface, between villains, and masquatch.

Doom's verse on notebook 3 was used on the album "Cheat codes" By dangermouse and black thought. Black thought honestly gotta be one of the greatest rappers out there.

MF DOOM is my fav lyricist since I was 6 year old and saw him in space ghost coast to coast or something on adult swim bumps on toonami late in the night , now when I'm making shorts I use some of his beats

I feel like I'm being redundant but there's an entire Adult Swim episode on Search's podcast "Have I ever told you the one about......MF DOOM?" I don't even necessarily like or trust Search but it's a well done podcast about everything DOOM. Anyway Demarco is on there for about 30-40 minutes detailing the Adult Swim DOOM relationship. Any DOOM fan would be doing himself a disservice if you don't check it out.

@@liquidmetalslime9 I used to be a big Search fan when I was a kid but as the years went by its been well known that he is a compulsive liar. Having said that I totally trust at least the DOOM podcast because 80% of the stories told are from people who dealt with him. People like Onyx the Birthstone Kid,, MF GRIMM, Big Ben the Klingon, Young Guru, and many more in the industry that had relationships with DOOM from before the KMD days up until the end of his life. It's very well done. I have to give Search credit for this.
