Dude I've been listening to DOOM for like 15 years and it's only thanks to this comment that I realized the connection between the rap name DOOM and his real name being Dumille
It's so surreal how mythic DOOM as a person was. Even the way he passed on weirdly fits in with his character (Halloween Night 2020 fyi). RIP to the illest ever to touch the mic, and just remember all caps when you spell the man's name
The man with the mask died on the day that people wear masks(Halloween) in a year where the WORLD had to wear masks(covid). I'm sorry but you don't get anymore fucking LEGENDARY THAN THAT!!!! VIVA MF DOOM!!!!
I am truly honored to have paid for countless tickets to MF DOOM shows where he either never showed, or literally had some random guy that spent at least two hours in his car smoking crack behind the venue before stepping on the stage with the mask to lipsync ~1.5 songs. RIP YOU VILLAINOUS BASTARD!
I remember in the late 90’s wanting to be a lyricist being a mask and hidden identity. My friends said no one would be into that. Years later one of them is the biggest MF Doom fans. 🤷🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
The funny thing is, the mask IS an image. I can't think of any image more iconic or synonymous with a rapper than DOOM's mask, and the lore around his villain persona. But I get the point he was making.
Very true, but that was his intent. I cut off the part where DOOM talks about rejecting the idea of selling the artist, the mask is what he is selling, the character is what he's selling not the literal person.
All I gotta say is MF DOOM. Illest realest villain to ever do it. Other rappers can’t compete or comprehend, most of em can’t even proceed to hold the pen, so let their labels hold their hand before they get the heavy handed reprimand
DOOM is a lazy magician/genius, i adore the man but he just isn't bothered. Give him the hottest producer at whatever time and he will only do it if he is feeling it. He didn't care, he is artistic in every sense of the word and didn't give a fuck.
Right and it was fun seeing him fk over music corporations since they fk their artists over to get more money and live lavished and hoard their money like all billionaires do.
@@Byronic19134 Well he was getting there with KMD in the early 90's. But being blackballed by the industry and losing your brother/ group member tends to fuck up ones life.
was super hyped for this yo, the video definitely lived up to the expectations. The way you go and find every little thing and bit of information that can add tov your videos is incredible. Fantastic work!
one thing i’ve always found charming is DOOM’s use of onomatopoeia commonly in his verses from Doomsday where he goes “doo do do do dooo that’s a audio daily double” all the way to Belize when he clears his throat and says “your attention please”, he makes it entertaining would be a great video topic!
@artvandelay48 not ripped off. It's just another part of his persona. What matters more, the genius of the music that he wrote or you seeing him perform it when in reality he too was just another guy in a mask on stage regardless.
Some of the tracks off of both VV LPs are some of my favourite DOOM pieces. Different and more experiemental. One of the track gave us SADEVILLIAN - Still Alive so I'm happy for that.
Your videos has opened up so much of what mf doom’s lyrics really mean. Best mc with no chains you ever heard was never a line that stuck out ot me until watching this video. Amazing work as always, I wish I could afford to be a channel member
i’m glad i could do that for you! that’s also one of my favorite things about DOOM, i’ll always notice something new about a song i love upon additional re-listens.
Great video. Thanks for the time and research. I think the DOOM vs. Viktor album would have been out of this World! I was also waiting for the Legion of DOOM album.
Venomous villain is underrated!! Ode to road rage is one of his best tracks like ever.. True it isn't a classic like the first one, nor is it as cohesive, but still, the back end didn't suck.
I like to compare MF Doom’s approach to the industry the same way one would for an NFL player entering free agency. Every album he would sign it over to a label to carry out the distribution, etc then onto the next label with the next project. I compare it to an nfl free agent bcus it reminds me of a player going to a team on a 1 yr deal then doing the same with another team the following year. It gives you that creative freedom while also being able to negotiate terms every release. Genius
The insomniac label was born out as a side project of Insomniac Magazine, which was an underground hip hop magazine that's still around digitally. You can probably contact them to talk more about the MF DOOM reach out. I'm guessing they were just not successful how they wanted and closed on releasing music.
Trice BASED. I don't believe MF died, THE WORLD'S GREATEST SUPERVILLAIN wouldn't go down easy. He probable been laughing at the world for years now enjoying his life knowing he's the greatest that ever was and ever will be.
I remember Myke-C-Town said that people started to believe that DOOM was sick when he was using DOOM bots. With his passing it might have been some truth to that.
MF Doom got his intricate wordplay and eclectic style from being my half countryman.😂😂😂 A Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 and Trinidad product. He held his own even after his brother DJ Subroc (Dingilizwe Dumile) died. RIP to the pioneering spirits. You know you're 1 of the greats if a Tribe Called Quest gives you a posthumous Big Up #Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 ❤
Alter Ego = a person's secondary or alternative personality. Venomous Villian was a DOPE album! Still Dope. I still listen to it even to this day. Let's not forget that each DOOM alter ego with their respective albums were each their own entites, ON PURPOSE. So expecting Venomous Villian to be another Madvilliany defeats the entire purpose. The same way that Funkadelic wasn't Parliament and vice versa. Kool Keith took the same approach to his art as well, with the Black Elvis, Tashan Dorrsett, Dr. Octagonecologyst, Dr. Dooom, Grant Shapiro, etc alter egos. If the same Kool Keith from 1987 would have been the one rapping now, he wouldn't have the career longevity or worldwide fan base that he has. I won't even delve deeply into Sun Ra and how he constantly reinvented himself for a career of about 50 years with well over 100 albums released in his lifetime. Possibly the above artists learned The Formula from him? Benefits for and of all of the above? Expanding fan bases worldwide and working the music (edit: business*) as they should have been, WELL, to stay Paid In FUll no matter what happened with the Labels (shout out to GZA/The Genius and Prince Rakeem/RZA, and other Wu artists who continuously reinvent themselves too). What DOOM did isn't new or unique, yet it is a working formula. Different alter egos of the same artist with different angles and different stories to tell. Creativity has no limits, even when critics such as ourselves chose to impose them. MF DOOM wasn't supposed to be taking, and obviously didn't take the same approach with King Geedorah or Madvillian or Viktor Vaughn or Metal Fingers, JJ DOOM, or even the Danger Doom albums. Same Man, different alter egos, and different narratives and concepts to match. Seems like Mr. Dumile was simply Genius at work to me. In Godmode. Oh, and so that I don't sound like TOO much of a critic myself (shrug), I dig the video as a whole, and thank you for it. I just disagree with the estmate of the Viktor Vaughn. Still Dope, in my opinion. Peace.
What was awesome about DOOM was that he didn't play the business games that the labels want artists to play. Instead of getting screwed by the labels, he screwed them to send a message. We need another DOOM to fight the BS music labels have become again
