For anyone who hasn't gone through MF DOOM's discography yet, it's a rabbit hole, believe me. His music to this day is so incredibly unique. Everything about him is so non-conformist and strange that you can't help but listen. RIP Dumile
Listening to Kmd zev love x and hearing DOOMS evolution is crazy, what he did was far beyond music but a way of living to him crazy how just about all hip hop went from “gangsters” to villains
Something to note that im sure MANY will have understood by now is the grave/gravestone double entendre with his name. "Dumile" sounding eerily like "Doom'll lay" being... doom'll lay 6 fit deep. On top of the rhyme scheme, he made his last name have a double entendre whil rhyming everything together.. there's a reason everyone loves Hip-Hop's most mad villain to date. R.I.P to the legend.
Also "unmarked or engraved" on his tombstone meaning he'll either die a success or unknown, going down with his body either being "unmarked or engraved" by his struggles or not going down without a fight. DOOM has the most dense lyricism you feel like you can analyse his tracks for hours.
Dumile is a name meaning “famous” or “well known” in isiZulu or other Nguni languages including isiNdebele of which I think his Zimbabwean father is. Dumile is also pronounced a little like his stage name, Doom-ee-leh. Dumile is also not a surname.

I was fortunate to have worked with MFDOOMs Operation Doomsday album when it got released on subpop. Great video! Very happy to finally see some DOOM content. The way DOOM created his own universe in each record and then created multiple characters who lived in their own universes is unparallelled imo. Competing with himself cos nobody else could touch him. Best rapper - MF DOOM Best beat maker - Dilla I'll die on this hill.
PLEASE PLEASE more DOOM in future videos! There so much to dig into from the production to his rhymes, iconography, mythos, just everything about him was fascinating. I would legit watch hours and hours of you breaking down DOOM tracks.
I’m glad I was around to pick these up when they were coming out. I just listened to this again a few months ago and I catch myself still just replaying and unpacking more things. Good memories. Thanks for making this and all the content you do.
Can you please make a video unpacking the references in this man's music? They're so obscure, and I've never really gotten them. I would love nothing more ❤
I'm cool that everyone loves DOOM. He was pretty good, but a LOT of his sampling was stuff that was already done before. Like that The Deele sample was used by Kwest the Madd Ladd on I Met My Baby at the V.I.M. and Lord Finesse did that Scooby sample for You Know What I'm About by Lord Finesse off the Trespass soundtrack. I love to see people love hip hop but I'm not gonna be sold that his projects were these far out super original pieces of work. Love YOUR vids though and this was a great watch. 👍🏼
As someone who has been following you for a while and has been a huge DOOM fan for many years, I just gotta say, you've done it again my man! This video was incredibly informative and entertaining, you can really see your love and admiration for DOOM and his incredible skill & story. That last line from "?" Has always made me tear up ("Everything is going according to plan, man"). You really did it justice and even I, a diehard fan, learned a lot from your video. Great work as always!! 👏👏
Been a MF Doom fan for a while now, but there’s still so much I’ve learned from your video! I really appreciate your content, keep up the great work ☺️
Just making my normal comment about how good I think this channel is. Already recommended the video. On a personal note, I’m really happy to see you covering Doom. One of my absolute favorites on the mic and I always loved how he (or his producers) would mix in things like the Scooby Doo sample that I recognized from Saturday morning cartoons as a kid. You also commented that “he’s your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper” or some such, but I’d also point out that I think Doom was one of the more beloved rappers by lyricists in other genres. My first musical love is rock and I remember after he died there were a lot of rock songwriters I follow (I specifically remember Thom Yorke of Radiohead saying something about him; I know there were several others but I don’t want to name names if I’m not sure who it was) who praised his creativity and wordplay in tributes to him. I guess the ability to not only come up with a 9 syllable rhyme but have it flow with the beat and being on point for the overall subject of the song transcends genre? Second side note- I know you tend to go back in time with your song choices but there’s a great song “Belize” on the album Danger Mouse and Black Thought did that features a verse from Doom that I’d definitely be curious to see a breakdown about.
This was excellent! It begs the question. When these artists perform under an identity, which they all are because of “stage names.” When the artist’s stage name dies, or that persona dies, does that necessarily mean that the “real person” has too?
Another great video, sir. So much respect for what you do here. Fingers crossed you make the jump to Madvillainy to round out Doom’s too short story arc. 🙌🏼
My first double set of records I bought to juggle with was 2X Gas Face 12" and 2X Terrordome 12" - I remember buying them at the mall music store of all places.
On Black Bastards you can hear Zev refer to himself as the villain on the track Sweet Premium Wine. Also on the 1994 track Checkmate with rapper Earthquake, he's almost MF DOOM by then, pay attention to the lyrics. Also, if you listen to the 12" version of Go With The Flow/Greenbacks from 1997, you can hear him rapping with that Zev Love X voice. It makes me wonder when those were recorded.
Apart from Stan Lee talking about how his characters are really him there's also the track The Hands of Doom which contains another scene sampled from Wild Style. In the scene the main character is confronted by a friend about how the character in his big graffiti piece is actually himself.
Just because black bastards was dropped does not mean it should be skipped. It’s a highly underrated album with some incredible songs DOOM (then zen love x) and subroc really stepping up their game. Some of the rhyming he’s famous for is heard on that project. Some of the tracks that would end up on doomsday were originally made back in that era so he was starting to come into his prime. Highly recommend checking it out.
If you weren't hip to DOOM, you probably still heard his beats on some Wu-Tang members solo albums. Also, Operation Doomsday was only the beginning. Check Madvillainy and MM... Food.

His plan worked... I never thought he'd pull it off but he was right... this is like watching ant's being amazed at a sugar cube. There is no mystique to Doom's plan, he was very straight forward, he was just above your heads. I tip my hat to him for doubting him after that Adult Swim run... in the end... this end, he has been right. But Doom is not finished.

One of the greatest. Looking forward to an episode on Prof one of these days, would love to hear a detailed history on everything that artist has overcome to create a substantial presence in hip hop today.
What an excellent video Never have I heard anybody break down this album with such details & samples used. I've been listening to it since it came out and to this day still find nuggets of gold in the lyrics! Fantastic review 👏🏾
Excellent job on this short doc on the Supervillain (RIP). His uniqueness and the universe he created leads me to think of George Clinton's vision during thr heyday of Parliament-Funkadelic. Characters, story lines, etc. 🤘
Thank you for pronouncing Subroc's first name properly, not that I would expect you to blunder on that. Too many times I've heard people just pathetically attempt to pronounce his name (and their last names) and some of the things they come up with make my head spin lol. Personally, the worst example I've seen was from that Michael McCrudden guy who does the "Before They Were Famous/Dead/Etc." videos. His pronunciation? DINGLES-WEE. I am not kidding, that's how he said it 😩
MF DOOM always reminds me of my older cousin who I lost in a car accident. The creativity, the love of comic books, even the weed smoking lol. listening to his music brings me back to when my cousin was here and I could still learn from him

Thank you for this. I was late to DOOM noticing him from the Grind Date album and then realized he's everywhere. Was listening to Chrome Children earlier. I appreciate your love of the craft.
Loved this my dawg!!! RIP TO THE VILLAIN. May he dance in heaven with his brother forever!
Wondering if you would ever do a Madvillainy breakdown? 👀👀It’s such an amazing project. From that album I discovered Sun-Ra, who would also be a great candidate for a DTG episode lol.
🙏🏾🙏🏾🖤🖤
You're really good at this dude
🙏🙏
I really like your work, from the content to the delivery, the style, visuals... amazing quality
And just saying, I would love an episode about ODB's Return to the 36 Chambers, or a song from it like Going down or else
Peace and ❤ from France
You never disappoint, my friend.
🙏🙏🙏
I was fortunate to have worked with MFDOOMs Operation Doomsday album when it got released on subpop. They needed to remaster it, as an assistant mastering engineer at Absolute Audio NYC, i got to chill with him in the reference room and smoke a bit, he had me run to the store for some hennesy a few tines haha. It hit me that he was the KMD o.g. was really amazing, i got to keep an pre release version to myself for months listening everyday. Real Genius man. RIP DOOM 🙏
5:19 Good vowel rhymes too, 'back' and 'that's' on the same beat. And 'engraved' and 'hey' follows the 'ay' formula.
Imagine had his brother not passed and they were able to carry out those alternative characters
Great video! Very happy to finally see some DOOM content. The way DOOM created his own universe in each record and then created multiple characters who lived in their own universes is unparallelled imo. Competing with himself cos nobody else could touch him.
Best rapper - MF DOOM
Best beat maker - Dilla
I'll die on this hill.
DOOM really was one of a kind, had his own unique sound.
This is the video I've been waiting for you to make and it did not disappoint.
🙏🙏🙏
Legend also says that dooms name is still written under that top bunk to this day.
PLEASE PLEASE more DOOM in future videos! There so much to dig into from the production to his rhymes, iconography, mythos, just everything about him was fascinating. I would legit watch hours and hours of you breaking down DOOM tracks.
This channel is SUCH A GEM. The production quality/knowledge is mesmerizing to watch/listen to!
I would love nothing more ❤
Man this channel going to be cemented as a Hip-Hop Museum at this rate. Hitting all the hallmarks
been waiting on some DOOM content from you!
Been waiting in this! I know you would get around to MF Doom eventually. You’ve got impeccable taste!
RIP to a legend man..If nothing else, never forget….always use ALL CAPS WHEN YOU SPELL THE MAN NAME!
🕊️ 🙏🏽 🕊️
RIP DOOM
As someone who has been following you for a while and has been a huge DOOM fan for many years, I just gotta say, you've done it again my man! This video was incredibly informative and entertaining, you can really see your love and admiration for DOOM and his incredible skill & story. That last line from "?" Has always made me tear up ("Everything is going according to plan, man"). You really did it justice and even I, a diehard fan, learned a lot from your video. Great work as always!! 👏👏
Something too is that in the chorus of Doomsday “Dumile” can also be “Doom will lay” with Dumile being a hint at his identity for those who know
Been a MF Doom fan for a while now, but there’s still so much I’ve learned from your video! I really appreciate your content, keep up the great work ☺️
The original Gas Drawls was Zev Love X morphing into MF DOOM. I pray there is a part 2 of this video
Dude please do more DOOM content, I feel like you’d have a ball with all his other bodies of work! Rest in Power DOOM 🙏🏼
I second this 🙏🏾🙏🏾
A Madvillainy breakdown would be unprecedented!
Shot out to my father on that album cover for the The Deele, his credit is the art direction.
This was excellent!
It begs the question.
When these artists perform under an identity, which they all are because of “stage names.”
When the artist’s stage name dies, or that persona dies, does that necessarily mean that the “real person” has too?
good question!
Thank you so much for these invaluable incites into one of my favorite artists! I learned so much. RIP MF Doom!
He always seemed directly inspired by Rammellzee to me- and of course the comic book thing.
Most DOOM fans ain't knowin - RΑΜΜ-ΣLL-ΖΣΣ 🤘😜🤘
Most amazing rapper ever! Thx for this great video! R.I.P DOOM ♥
I thought I knew my 90s hip hop but this is a new one for me. Thank for sharing. Looks like a fun and interesting rabbit hole to go travelling down.
If you weren't hip to DOOM, you probably still heard his beats on some Wu-Tang members solo albums. Also, Operation Doomsday was only the beginning. Check Madvillainy and MM... Food.
Just found your page as I've been clicking through alot of videos learning how to sample. I have to say your content is great and ive been running through them all. I'm a 90's hip hop head forever. Keep up the great content I'll be tuning in
Woo! Finally. It's great that you actually listen to your fans!
I gotchu 🫵
Lowkey great album analysis I’ve been obsessing over DOOM’s earlier shit ever since I started listening and seeing someone talk about it this in depth about the character, the separation from the main industry, the purpose of the mask itself, niggas usually don’t go this deep but I’m glad you did all love bro

DOOM in full effect
One of the best album I’ve ever heard , I put it up there with Enter The Wu-Tang and Illmatic.
Yasiin is a fan too, as videos on here will show. From doing DOOM rhymes in the studio, to performing Figaro and Meat Grinder live with Robert Glasper, Chris Dave and Derrick Hodge. Not to mention his bars on JID's song Stars - he sounds a lot like DOOM on that song.

I found your channel last night and searched to see if you had made any videos about MF DOOM. Scary timing, but I'm not complaining!
I'm all up in your algorithm 😂
Synchronicity is a wonderful thing! 😁 That kinda thing happens to me _all the time..._ spooky.
Very Solid breakdowns from perspectives most people miss.
"accordion" was my introduction to Doom... Man... that dude was bad ass.
Perfection. I don't even want to speak on it any more than that. This breakdown was Perfection. Thank you, brother ;D
Rest in Beats, MF DOOM 🙏
15:48 you think we're not gonna acknowledge the fact your scratches are filling in the "nicorette" rhyme and perfectly matching the same 3 syllables of it?? 😭😭😭 HARDDDDD
I always knew the highlights of his transition from KMD to MF DOOM, but it was great to see a detailed breakdown of it and the first album.
I’ve watched a lot of mf doom related video and been down the rabbit hole for awhile but this as been the best video. Good job. Now time for madvillainy.
I love these deep dives and break downs fam!!! Keep em coming you got a new subscriber!
"EVERYTHING IS GOING ACCORDING TO PLAN MAN" - MF DOOM
SHOUT OUT THE WHOLE G.Y.P.
#80 DEKA #VAPORWAVEGOD
Mannnnn, I don’t know if this has anything to do with my recent comment asking you to do an MF DOOM video but hell yeah thank you!
One of the greatest. Looking forward to an episode on Prof one of these days, would love to hear a detailed history on everything that artist has overcome to create a substantial presence in hip hop today.
What an excellent video
Never have I heard anybody break down this album with such details & samples used. I've been listening to it since it came out and to this day still find nuggets of gold in the lyrics! Fantastic review 👏🏾
this is so perfectly timed. i was searching your channel for an MF DOOM video last night
One of the greatest UA-cam channels period.
Your video’s are so good! Thanks for helping me understand the complex albums of MF Doom, I have gained a new level of appreciation for his work now.
Excellent job on this short doc on the Supervillain (RIP). His uniqueness and the universe he created leads me to think of George Clinton's vision during thr heyday of Parliament-Funkadelic. Characters, story lines, etc. 🤘
Finally, the long awaited DOOM video!
There's also a version of the album that ends with the song "I hear voices". The cherry on top for such a great masterpiece
I am not kidding, that's how he said it 😩
Bro you have the best MF Doom / Doomsday breakdown on the internets. Salute to you! Doomsday is the best Hip-Hop album ever recorded.
MF DOOM always reminds me of my older cousin who I lost in a car accident. The creativity, the love of comic books, even the weed smoking lol. listening to his music brings me back to when my cousin was here and I could still learn from him
