MF DOOM & the Art of Misdirection
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 чер 2024
- Miss directions are one of the many lyrical tropes seen throughout DOOMS music, where DOOM will set up a punchline only to redirect it in a way that the audience wouldn't have initially expected. In this video, I'll go over all the miss directions I've personally encountered through my listening experiences. I’m positive DOOM didn’t pioneer this type of technique. He just so happens to be a rapper who I listen to a lot who uses this method.

Here’s one (misdirection)
"Always throws me off when she tells me DADDY….FUNK ME"
Next line is a great bar that goes unnoticed too..
"I’m like anywhose/seeds walking all out in the street with out any shoes"
FUNK.
WHICH THEN LEADS INTO THE LINE…
"I guess it’s better than some FUNKY SOCKS"
AYO…..this guy is a genius.
What's the name of background song at very end
I know you would be destroyed by companies if your channel was bigger. But I really appreciate your use of really obscure but good soundtracks. I have no clue if you will see this but I heard the shopkeeper soundtrack from castle crashers around 00:38 and it made me smile. Im not sure if you have gotten a copyright strike in the past, but I just wanted to say thank you for putting in the effort and more specifically having such a diverse taste that a track like that would be put in to this video. Thank you friend :)
Personally, I feel like ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ had one of the best lines EVER : ‘Got more soul than a sock with a hole’
On my work email after my signature I have that in quote 🤣
i never got that line
more sole right?
@@TheKendeHD just a double meaning type of line. He’s saying he has more soul than a sock with a hole because a sock with a hole in it……would be showing a lot of your “sole”.
@@TheKendeHD just a play on soul/sole homophones
RIP VILLAIN it's a shame I never had the chance to get scammed by you and you DOOMbots.
I would honestly have loved to gone to one of his doombot shows😅

"Prepared to get hurt and mangled like Kurt Angle, rookie year" is my absolute favorite DOOM line. This is mostly because I'm a massive wrestling fan, but also because of how well the bar flows and how it's delivered. Great Day is definitely one of my favorite DOOM songs. Great video man
My favorite is “How DOOM hold heat and preach non violence, shh he’s bout to start speech c’mon silence” it’s not only applicable to lots of things but his delivery on it is golden, and it kicks off raid perfectly as well.
@@ddl3718 “ Average emcees is like a tv blooper
MF DOOM, he's like DB Cooper”
@407 Takkun
"He rock the house like rock 'n' roll, got more sole/soul than a sock with a hole" and "They say the villain been spittin' enough lightning to rock, shock, and boogie down to Brighton, alright then" are some of my favorites just of of Madvillainy.
^Rhinestone cowboy is top 3 track on the album 🐐
It's easy as 🥧 3.14
Another great misdirection is on the track money folder, where Doom says “he flipped it like madlib did an old jazz standard” and then the track cuts away to a jazz sample for 10 seconds
My favorite one, personally, is the one on Batty Boyz. You have to wait so long for the end of the punchline that it makes me chuckle every time I hear it.
@@seansachs6105 bic, now can i get my pen back
Wait I don’t get the misdirection, can someone explain it? I’m smooth brained
@@lunarsurfaceproductions It's a musical misdirection, not a lyrical one. Money Folder is an aggressive, hard-hitting song, so it's very surprising when it suddenly breaks into smooth jazz for 10 seconds.
@@lunarsurfaceproductions think of it as like a cutaway in a family guy episode
"Slip like Freudian...." was my first 'all time favorite' doom lyric.
In Batty Boyz the interlude is the set up for the punchline. DOOM didn't have his pen that's why it was just the instrumental
that's a genius and hilarious interpretation, never thought about it like that. My friend also pointed out how the word pen is two letters off from the word penis. 🤣
Hilarious 😂😂😂
genius
@@AnAbsurdExistence learning another thing about DOOM music, once again 😅
ua-cam.com/video/HS0MqZ7rClY/v-deo.html
It's not a big misdirection but I love the end of Rhymes like Dimes where he says "you thought the song was over."
Idk why but it always makes me laugh.
“HAAA WE TRICKED YOU”
Thats not doom but yeah thats funny haha
That's Bobbito from Stretch and Bobbito lol

DOOM created misdirection 5,000+ years ago and then time traveled to see how it would progress, only to show the world how it’s truly done.
"Boxers, briefs or fig leaf?
I know I wear my boxers so my big- "
MF DOOM
wait what would he be saying if it didn't cut out I've always wondered
@@Gooodmorningdog “Boxers briefs of fig leaf?
I know I wear my boxer so my big dick breathes”
@C J im pretty sure he was gonna say "dick breathe" cause that makes more sense why he wears boxers
You know that was one thing a lot of people didn't like about cats like MF DOOM and even dudes like Jay Z. Like if you notice those kind of rapper's songs are so hard to memorize. They either had to many or not enough syllables in a bar. To the regular listener the esthetics might not sound as appealing to the ear, but that flaw makes them unique though. Once you get the hang of it, rap patterns and rhyming on beat is almost hard not to do. Like DOOM would literally change the rhyme mid bar, it's almost like an abstract art. Most emcees rhyme in patterns of 4 and switch the rhyme up every 5th bar four times to make 16 bars in a verse. Good emcees like Pun or Kool G Rap will do a whole 16 with multi syllabic rhymes. DOOM was different though all while making little slick rhyming remarks or cheesy punch lines to catch you off guard. He was spitting off beat, rhyming differently, and was even some what comedic because he's suppose to be the villain of rap. He's kinda poking run at the rap game. He doesn't want the typical rap fan to like his music. He doesn't want his appearance to be any part of his get up either and it's what most rappers base their whole career on. A popular face with star power, but who suck at the actual craft. He didn't even like doing shows and would even have other dudes where the mask and do it for him all because he is suppose to be this super villain of rap. There will be no one else like this guy.
This exactly my thoughts. Mane, DOOM was on a whole other level in lyrical ability.
Pun and Big also changed rhyme schemes whenever they want.
I like in Kon Karne when he pauses to let the sample say "Love is"
love kon karne
That's definitely in my top 10 somewhere after dead bent
“Don’t talk about my moms yo”
He also words the verses just like the Sade lyrics from that sample, she says “my love is wider than Victoria lake, higher than the Empire State” after he says “Goin’ back to Cali where the-‘Love is’” Doom says “wider than the Nile, hold power like the great pyramids of Giza and stay leanin like the tower of Pisa” genius
I wish I could show y’all my DOOM poster. It’s on rainbow foil and there were only 50 made. Hand numbered. It cost me $55 and another $65 to frame really nicely. So worth it.
you could post an image on the MFDOOM reddit
Let me see
Hell yea, post it to the MF DOOM reddit!
bro why won’t u show it
"no names" has another great misdirection where the misdirection comes first and then the "tell". This is it: "On the phone he sounded like a real paid (pause)... Then we met in person he was three shades blacker".
There was another moment in 'Space Hos' where he was interviewing Judy Jetsons and asked "boxers, briefs or fig leaf?" I forgot what he said after, but he had to cut out the last word because he was "running out of time". Genius.
I've only just discovered DOOM back in 2016 and that was just MM...Food. I've since discovered more of his music from all his aliases and as such have a much deeper understanding of it all and his style. It has inspired me to try to rhyme off beat as well as other techniques that very few artist like himself can pull off and I'm not half bad. Definitely something I would not have ever even thought of attempting if not for someone so off the wall like DOOM had he never blessed my speakers with such an exquisite style. Gonna continue to write like DOOM is still here cuz he inspires me still everyday that passes, it's like he never left.
No one can fuck with DOOM's rhyming and lyrics.
What does that mean
People who get mad at creators for doing what they want are jerks
There’s actually another one on Great Day before the example in the video. The setup is “but this stuff is like what you might find on movie food”, with the implication that the track is like butter you’d find on popcorn. Instead, the response is “uh, what is jalapeños”, a topping found on nachos, implying heat while also breaking the flow of the song with the pause before the response.
I’ve always loved the phrasing of the response as a contestant thinking of an answer on Jeopardy, returning it in the form of a question. Due to the awkward pronunciation on “jalapeños”, I think the line could also create the image of a confused customer reading it off the menu for theatre concessions. Thanks for the video.
I also feel in addition to making his music more timeless the misdirections solidify his character as a villain because of course he wants you to think you know what he’s going to say next
One of my favorites is on the mouse and the mask album : "Boxers briefs or fig leaf, as you know he wear boxers so his big... "
He leaves off half a sentence and still I know what he was gonna say.
English isn’t my first language, so I have no clue what the implied sentence is :(
@@Beltesassar_ dick breathe i think?
@@Beltesassar_ it's a reference to a biggie line "wear boxers so my dick can breathe"
@@Beltesassar_ I don't get it either
Woah, I've been using UA-cam for a long time so I feel really dumb asking this but how did you the Madvillainy album cover on your username like that? Is it a channel flair like something from reddit? Ive never seen anything like that before.
Just finished watching, Loved the vid since I didn't know a couple of these miss directions besides the Batty Boyz & the Great Day one. I love these vids since I usually send them to friends or my brothers if I want to get them into DOOM's music. Great Vid Bro. 🤘👍
Barz Simpson - "Give 'em dap/ Dead That..... Wait, You Thought It Was Over... Dingbat?“ 😂☠️🐐
If it wasn't still so short, I'd probably rewatch your video catalogue on a daily basis
I love this channel, keep up the good work mon fren
the bitches/booze line still amazes me despite how simple it is
“Ignoramuses enlist and sound dumb, found em’ drowned in cows dung, crowns flung” might be my favourite DOOM line off the top of my head. So poetic
Thanks for this An Absud Existence!
Your edits are genuinely fantastic. Just wanted to give props.
I like Method Mans "I'm sick, insane, crazy, drivin' Miss Daisy
Out her fuckin' mind"
props for the smiths reference
didn't think anyone would notice that 😳
Realy like the quality of your videos. Keep up the good production.
I love the misdirections. The absurdity of some of them are just really funny. He' a lyrical magician.
that’s a good way of putting it.
Nice one man always enjoyed those style lines
I love DOOM so much! He is not only my favorite rapper, but my favorite music artist period.
Another thoroughly researched DOOM vid! I'd call these throw off's or send off's but misdirects works too. I've listened to enough of DOOM's music to have heard several of these but never realized it was such a pattern or how intentional he was with it.
I high key still wanna hear your thoughts on AoT and the Sopranos
Yea AoT is masterpiece

This is a topic I've wanted to talk or write about for years and never got around to it, so thank you for acting giving this a spotlight because it's my favorite thing abt MF DOOM's music.
A track I wanted to bring up was the beat of Hoe Cakes, which shows this misdirection thing isn't purely lyrical. The start of the beat is a very doofy sounding beat box that almost sounds like DOOM is making armpit fart noises. Then the beat transitions from this ridiculous and goofy beat to an incredibly lush and gorgeous instrumental, completely unexpected from the song's introduction.
Thank you once again for making a video on this and long live the villain.
“Booze” it’s like a triple entendre as it could mean “boos” meaning females when you’re talking hip hop slang or Ebonics. Or “boos” as in being booed (almost like he’s saying this party could use more ‘boos’ like the crowd is vibing to villainy-he’s not getting booed off stage) Or it literally could mean Booze. Talk about misdirection. Every single one of these apply. I didn’t even catch all of it until I thought about it. That’s what I love about doom, I realize different plays on words every few listens.
He catches you off guard with a triple entendre in place of the word you may be expecting.
this is a great video, replayability is a great part of rap lyrics
really great video, just found your channel, good luck with the future my guy
thank you!
Can’t wait for this video 🙏
Fantastic video man! Loved it
I love the songs you use in transition and in the background and stuff
thanks
The clip from castle crashers shop caught me off gaurd😅
Well while we talk about DOOM lets take some time and look back at one of his most underrated songs - Dead Mouse. Now im just gonna cut it to the probably best punchline i heard in industrial rap ever (means battle rap punches dont count). It says ''V sells time to an inmate''. I guess most of DOOM fans get it, but i will break it down just quickly. In jail all you have is time or getting more time means getting longer sentance. Now, to sell time to the one who has nothing else but time is what makes this punch so hard. The metaphor is just untouchable. I doubt anyone will ever beat that one single bar
This is beautiful work man
Hyped! 😍 Can't wait to see this!
bro i would've loved either of the first 2 ideas you had
Been watching your videos, love the topics the appreciation you have DOOM is awesome and it’s great to see someone teaching the sacred lessons in a fun way - KF DOOM
You can tell the production quality/editing is getting better. Great vid 👍

Awesome video!
Dope as always
Have always loved and noticed these little details
4:36 that is 100% an 8-bit version of the smiths. I love it. That made my night, thank you
"He might need some p-sychiatrist",
the word "psychiatrist" has a voiceless "p" and yet he uses that first voiceless "p" because he wanted to say something elseand change mid sentence, technically not a misdirection, but another small detail on the song "Great Day".
i heard a great one on a rare doom cut the other day, its not a straight up misdirect, but its subtle and clever and villainous.
"its such a shame, the lust for fame crushed his frame, like... whatshisname"
Great vid brodie!
Great thumbnail and video my man
thank you
Enjoyed it, there was even one I had not previously caught!
I never realized that in dooms technique. Like I’ve listened to great day a thousand times, it’s actually my favorite song by him. And I’ve never once that when he say “spit so many verses sometimes my jaw twitches. One thing this party could use is more” that the next word would be bitches but instead he says booze. But you explaining this to me gives me chills and makes his songs feel like new and like I need to re analyze them
Great vid g
Such a cool video!
Excited!
Nice video mate
I love that DOOM is he's so smug! Constantly reminds you his style is one of a kind and he's the greatest, all while dissing anyone who touches a mic. (ITS NOT A HOBBY DONT BE SLOPPY). He takes the artform serious and delivers some rhymes that make you rewind, memorize, and dissect. Ill hear a bar from a song ive heard hundreds of time and still find new references or 'punchlines' i didnt notice before, mind-blown.
Vaudeville Villian is a masterpiece.
Damn i m amazed especially of that beef rap misdirection i must have heard it like 100 times still never realised DOOM planned it to be like this,,,"waddup..." like he's coming outta nowhere giving a surprise and is like" haha i gotcha "
Great vid mr DOOM video man

One of the first things I noticed about DOOM's music. Gotta love it.

From Space Ho’s, is a great example
My favorite doom line is from Gazillion ear when he says "traded three beans for this cow, cheap talkin'". The line alludes to the story of jack and the magic 'beanstalk', which could be made to rhyme with the other lines but instead doom leaves that rhyme to be made in the listener's mind
R.I.P. MF DOOM, All caps when you spell the man name! 😭🙏🏻
Great video love MF DOOM so I click on anything about him. I love his usage of this misdirection he does and I know you mentioned no names but you missed that there are 3 examples of it from that song.
After the example you gave he does a fill in the blank for the words “shit” and “cracka” give it another listen and you’ll hear it.
Anyways just had to mention that. Great vid. RIP DOOM
That cheesy/jalapeños bar on Great Day still gets me

Bro... Im just now rewatching this vid and I noticed that you use an "elevator" version of The Smiths " this charming man" as an intro for your topics (@4:44). Just waited to say not a lot of people are as huge fans of The Smiths & DOOM as i am and I really appreciate the tiny easter egg!!!
