They were really smart this year to going back to the basics and released a product that shows that. They needed to showcase a serious improvement, not just processor stuff. They take away all the ports and then in the future reintroduce it as an overall "full redesign". M1 processor massive improvement and more ports. Bringing back a new design for the charge port as well.

However, that brand new ThinkPad, which was purchased off the official Lenovo site, crashed in 5 mins after playing a 240p UA-cam video for testing purposes. What's mind blowing to me is the fact that you can unplug it and still get over 12k pts in CR23. That's insane. My 10875H gets 11k pts plugged in, drawing 95W, but tanks to 8.5k pts on battery because it's limited to 45W. And that is with liquid metal, temps under control, undervolting, manual PL2 and PL1.. All the benefits.
Power of 5nm TSMC process and good design. Incredible. This year, apple laptops really are something else.

Outstanding job Matthew, great content, I would love to have really high speed sd card reader because of the price, but nothing is perfect in laptop world even on the highest tier. Anyways I'm amazed by the design and implementation of everything we've been waiting for in the laptop world... It's sad to see it on a walled garden type ecosystem, but hopefully we can have some of that performance per watt

PS. You'll probably see SDExpress, along with HDMI 2.1 and Thunderbolt 5 in the 2023 model, right now because they have 3 TB4 ports on this machine each with its own TB hub and dedicated lane, it's harder for them to implement a higher speed SD card slot and HDMI port with the last TB4 hub they have in the SoC that they break into these ports (the SD card and HDMI have to 'share' (not in the traditional way, they can still run at full speed even if you utilize both of them at the same time, but you get what I mean) the same 40Gbps bandwidth, but HDMI 2.1 alone requires 48Gbps). And it's not like you can't do higher resolution & higher refresh rate with these machines, you can get QHD 240Hz or 6K 60Hz out of the TB4 ports.

Ah, after watching and waiting to make sure there's no weird flaws, and working out what specs are ideal for me, I finally ordered a 16" M1 Pro MBP 32GB 2TB. The exact machine in this review, except with 2TB instead of 1TB. Just watching now to sit in the glow of anticipation of it arriving. Finally, a worthy replacement of my 2015 Retina MBP. I skipped all the 2016-19 disaster years. Was almost tempted by the 16" Intel MBP, but it still had too many annoying issues. My 2015 machine is still a wonderful beast, but at 7 years old, I'm pushing my luck, as I use it all day every day for work, study, and play. It will retire to being a backup machine that I can pull out anytime my main machine needs to go to Apple for whatever. I plan on installing software such as Forehead or TopNotch to hide the notch by forcing the menu bar to a black background. Really looking forward to taking this out for the day and not bothering to take a charger. And to watching movies etc, since I currently use my 2015 MBP for that (yeah, I'm a weirdo w no TV ha ha).

Hey, I’m a student, and I’m considering either the M1 Pro (10 core CPU 16 GPU) laptop vs the M1 Max 24 core option since it’s just $200 more (since I configured with 32 GB ram). I’m in a bit of a spot where I could either move to the max or get AppleCare+. Think in that case the Max is not worth the money? Just thinking about future proofing, I’m doing programming and CAD rendering.

Love the review. Thumbs up! A quick question: I don't do gaming or creative video/music editing, just long hours online working from home during the week, and frequently on and off evenings and weekends, streaming stock quotes and charts, UA-cam (watching reviews and movies), online searches, having multiple windows open and multiple Chrome tabs open and operating at the same time often, as well as a couple trading platforms downloaded to my desk top and up and running as well, and misc other things, so I am thinking about saving the money and just getting the 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage. Do you think I'll regret not getting 32GB of RAM and/or 1TB SSD storage?

Is 32GB enough for photo / video editing ? Or should I go for 32 GPU / 64GB RAM ?
I am a photographer / videographer whose main focus currently is wedding photo/video.
Most of the weddings I shoot have like 60-70 GB for photos alone.

I'm a doc filmmaker editing long timelines (sometimes 2-3h) in a massive project with more than 300h of footage and hundreds of sequences.

I'm also still using my 15.4 inch 2014 Macbook pro, but my new M1 pro 16 inch macbook just arrived today !! I only got the base model, with a 1 TB drive, but I don't do filmmaking or other things requiring that much power. I do use Lightroom and Photoshop, but from what I have seen in reviews, even the base CPU and RAM levels will be more than enough. In fact, even the base M1 Macbook air would be enough power for me, but I am used to having a large screen, and I really wanted the 16 inch model.
Good luck with your future purchase; I am sure you will enjoy whichever model you pick, when you consider what a huge upgrade it is from the 2014 model :)

new M1 MacBook Pros - "16" and 14" tonight. The body is squared off and thicker than my 2019 MBP. WHAT??? And it feels cheap, not like the former Airplane Grade aluminum. You knock on it and it feels hollow-ish. And the bottom feet are harder than previous models, almost like a cell phone case that is hard plastic and sort of hits the desk too hard. I am pretty disappointed. Why, Apple, Why?
