Thank you for posting this, looks like a fairly easy job. I changed the valve cover gaskets, vvt solenoid and it still continued leaking oil. I purchased one of these filters and I'll find out when I change it.
And to answer your original question… it was changed because the o-ring seal that’s part of the strainer gets hard, cracks, and leaks with age. Commonly misdiagnosed as a valve cover gasket leak.
The rubber oring seal that’s part of the screen was old and leaking oil. The strainer usually isn’t a problem it’s the seal that’s the big problem as it gets hard, cracks, then leaks…
Btw torque specs can be found in manual or at Hondas website because my dumbass used to overtighten "everything " When I 1st started working on cars,I ruined or nearly ruined every 😑 job I was doing because 1.didn't realize my strength! 2.didnt realize about torque ft. Great job Miles! We’re you able to easily see where the leak was coming from? That part looks like it’s buried pretty good and would make it difficult to see the leakage.
Miles Barber Thanks Miles. I have a leak also and I changed my VTEC filter (located near the oil filter) but still notice a leak. I’ll checkout the location of your leak and see if that’s where the leak is from.
@@nathanield.4527 Did you get the leak fix? I have the same issue, it was leaking around the VTEC solenoid, the seal was replaced but it is leaking again and we don,t know where.
@@leonardoalfaro8916 there is the Vtec seal with a small mesh and there are oil pressure sensor on the Vtec that have a oring that also leaks. I was thinking about getting one of those cordless ratchets. Do you think it’s worth it? Give me some buying advice and tips on what to look for. Thanks!
Nathaniel D. There are only 3 I would even consider. Milwaukee, Ingersol Rand, and Snap on. Out of those I have only used the snap on and Milwaukee. I own the Milwaukee and would never go with anything else. Mileaukee’s M18 and M12 systems for mechanics are the best out in my opinion. Snap on very close behind!
Miles Barber Cool thanks Miles. I was looking at the Milwaukee M12 ratchet with a 3/8 drive. After hearing your comment, I’m gonna order it this weekend.
Is there a hole to the right of the Strainer cover right behind the intake manifold ? I was following the leak and I’m thinking it’s the strainer as well but I thought it was odd to see a while with oil there and made me wonder maybe it’s coming from the hole
Austin Talley the vehicles owner did not mention any drivability concerns. There shouldn't be any unless oil level gets overly low. That will also cause a check engine light for vtec performance.
Nessuhhmakeup oh man I don’t know off the top of my head but it’s a Honda so have 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm ready for sure. I would just grab a 1/4 drive metric set from 5-15mm and a 3/8 drive metric set from 8-19mm. You will of course need a 1/4 and 3/8 drive ratchet as well. For this job that will take care of it.
Made this video many years ago. Made it for others in the industry not so much as a diy video. There were no videos on the VTC strainer at the time. You can see what I’m doing so I didn’t think I needed to tell you what you already see happening.
Not sure off the top of my head but give me a bit and I will pull up Alldata and post it for you. I don’t usually torque them to spec just because I do so many and can judge it by feel but I will get it for you.
I think oils burning comes into play only if ram low on oil too long where the. Low oils light is on and that causes issues with lubricating the cylinder walls and ring.
@@ruben16888 yeah really shouldn’t be much. Now that I’ve been a tech for over 6 years and don’t work anymore in my cars. I just tighten and that give it another 1/4 turn. Some bolts that I know should be 80ftlb I give it 1/3. I do have toque wrench but don’t always have manual

Only thing with fluid that need to re opened is the strainer housing it self the ps hose doesn’t need to be removed. There’s a clamp need the strut that you can loosen the hose. Detach the power steering reservoir and move the pump there. Remove the ps pump bracket and viola!!

Did it work?.
Any update?
Thanks I figured out where the oil was coming from but couldn’t figure out the name of the part
Thanks for your videos man. Helps alot. Did you have to drain the oil before doing this?
Nope don’t need to. Might be a good idea to do after if you really feel the need. If you work clean it should be fine.
@@BarberAutomotive Thank U
Fixing to change this on my 03 Honda Accord hope this is the leak
If anyone is wondering, the specs for those two bolts are 7-8 lb-ft.
I'm pretty sure u didn't have to take off ps hose off there's a bolt up near firewall that moves it around pretty easily!
Does the 2007 Honda VTEC 4 cylinder have this strainer?
And to answer your original question… it was changed because the o-ring seal that’s part of the strainer gets hard, cracks, and leaks with age. Commonly misdiagnosed as a valve cover gasket leak.
This is a great video. But 240p? I had to view this on a computer.
Do you have to take off the bolt were the tension moves?
You never said why the strainer needed to be changed? The strainer did not look bad so why change it?

careful with the VTC strainer screws, they're easy to break...

Due to driving the oil goes all over.
Do you need to drain the oil before attempting this task?
Sean Aguayo no
Sean Aguayo good luck. It’s not a hard job if you can turn wrenches and are smart.

Besides the oil leak were there any other issues with the way the vehicle ran?

i've seen another diy video showing 12Nm for the bolts which is 8.7 lbf ft.

Yes absolutely does.

So if you don't clean this out, you may get CEL? Now when this part is dirty will it make the car burn oil?
Michael Broski yes if it’s clogged you will get a cel. If it’s leaking and oil gets low you will get a vtec cel. Should not cause you to burn oil.
The better question is when the strainer is dirty , what is the debris?
It can trigger the P2646 CEL and cause the car to go into limp mode
I think oils burning comes into play only if ram low on oil too long where the. Low oils light is on and that causes issues with lubricating the cylinder walls and ring.
Do you know if there is a strainer for v6 model?
