- This is basically Part 3 in a quest to solve P2646 for my brother's Honda Accord. P2646, which is an OBD-II generic code for the engine control module (ECM) detecting the 'A' rocker arm actuator control circuit for bank 1 has a performance problem or is stuck in the off position.
My brother's Honda developed acceleration problem (choppy, shuddering, stumbling & loss of power) while driving and the engine light on the dash board came on. When checking the error code using OBD-2 diagnostic tool, it displayed P2646.

Part 6: How to fix common Oil Leaks for Honda
What causes the P2646 code or what triggers it?
The ECM detects a problem in the rocker arm system for bank 1.
The oil passages are clogged or the oil pressure is not up to specifications.
The rocker arm actuator is clogged with sludge or is sticking intermittently.
The engine may have excessive sludge binding the rockers from moving or the oil is too thick.
The incorrect oil viscosity is being used.
Engine oil level is too low, PCM failure, sensor failure & wiring issue
What are other symptoms of the P2646 code?
The engine valve train will not move as designed causing a low power condition.
The Check Engine Light will be illuminated.
The valve train may be excessively noisy if one or more rockers are stuck in the incorrect position.
Based on our research and inspecting my brother's Honda Accord, we concluded that there must have been an oil leak and/or sludge blocking the flow of oil inside the engine. We didn't want to think that we should remove and replace the rocker arm, or even the oil pressure switch and the solenoid. There must be something simpler and easier to fix.
The first thing we wanted to do was to clean the engine using SeaFoam. Sea Foam is specially formulated to safely and slowly re-liquify gum, sludge, varnish and carbon deposits from the hard parts in your engine so they can be flushed out of the system.
Afterwards, we planned to drain and change the oil and the filter, followed by replacing the gasket / strainer for the VTEC Spool Valve in the back of the engine. We would also replaced the front VTC strainer. Many people recommended replacing the entire Spool Valve Assembly which consists of the Timing Oil Pressure Switch, Gasket with strainer and the heat shield, but genuine OEM too expensive, so we'll keep the old one.
Apparently Code P2646 is fairly common for Honda sedan cars and SUVs such as Accord, Civic, CRV, CRZ, Element, Fit and Acura RSX, especially 7th and 8th generations model years such as model years 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012.
What does a rocker arm actuator do?
The rocker arm actuator is an oil pressure switch which controls the flow of oil to critical upper engine cylinder head components. The Rocker Arm Control Solenoid supplies hydraulic pressure to the Variable Timing mechanism. This allows the VTC System to adjust valve timing as needed. The engine's control module (PCM) uses the Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch to verify correct oil pressure for proper activation of the Variable Timing mechanism. If the PCM does not see the correct voltage signal back from the Rocker Arm Oil Pressure switch, the PCM will set code P2646.

What are the torque specs for the cover?
Tip, when pulling out the gasket/screen hook from inside the screen itself, that way you dont accidentally gouge the cover.
You have such a good attitude for doing it in the snow. It’s a perfect 69 degrees in Los Angeles and my mechanic (I own a shop) wouldn’t stfu complaining so I said come watch a 20 yr old do it in the snow with a great attitude 😂
Getting it done in the snow. You're the man. Mad respect.
Lastly, you have to make sure to clear the code if it doesn’t go off by itself, and make sure oil is changed and topped off to appropriate level! Great job on this series kid, in the snow and still knocked it out! 👍🏼🙏🏼
You are a great mechanic brother, I really admire how you keep filming despite the cold and the other people. Much respect, and thanks for helping us with our Hondas :)
Because of your video, I did this project in less than a hour. I even made sure not to drop the nut behind the tensioner. You rock!
Duuuude I dropped it and idk where it went
Lm
Thanks for the video. What a bummer doing it in the snow, I followed your directions in the rain! Until I saw your discussion I was without hope of replacing the strainer. It went as well on our 2003 CRV, so thank you again for the help.
love this dude always smiling
this video reminded me of myself lol. I work on my car while it’s snowing outside no garage or carport. Good job
man this helped me out a lot.
Because of your video, I was able to do the job even in freezing cold
Your video are awesome bro! I just learned how to do the spool vtc unit thanks to you and now I’m learning how to do this! Thank you so much! Keep the videos coming.. you just got a new subscriber 👍🏼
out in the snow like a boss u da man 😎
Thank you for the tour!
Im about to do this for my daughter's car and while I absolutely would have figured it out on my own, having a nice young person explain it all sure is a heck of a lot easier.
Im in Florida so I was confused by all the static in the video at first. Turns out its falling frozen water. Weird.
I followed your videos and changed the strainer out in about 30 mins. Thanks.
Badass, dude. Yer a real go-getter. And always a smile.
Used your video as a step by step and got it done! Thanks much
Hilarious 😂 the socket fell off and video went to promotional video for O'Reilly's on my end ... It's like they knew. Good VID 👌
I got autozone😂
I got harbor Freight lol
Great video. You are so funny but so professional. I got all the info I needed to fix my Element. Keep doing this please Aiman. But introduce your cameraman please.
Hey keep up the good work. You make it look so simple.
Thank you so much for the help, I changed valve cover and changed oil pan gasket,
it looked like it was gushing from oil pan but eventually I found it was this damn thing….. anyways your video is so helpful
Thanks for your tips My friend, great video .👍 Best regards from Pachuca Mexico🎉
Hey Aiman, towards the right of the VTC strainer cover, is there a hole right behind the intake manifold as well in your Honda? Trying to make sure if that’s normal or not. Seemed kinda odd to have a hole which made me thinking oil leak came from there. Any feedback will be appreciated thanks!
Milwaukee send this young man a heated jacket. Can you say Vtec kick in yo when u finish the repair.😂
Can't believe that car is still running with all that sludge in the strainer.
Very good brother! Even doing it in the snow!!!😊
Bro the vtc assembly is notorious for having hairline cracks and leaking when I heats up Overtime , it’s recommended you change the screen and the housing itself for higher mileage k motor
Great job Aiman! I'm doing this job today and your video will be helpful.
What is your car doing that you feel the strainer needs to be changed? Also does the 2007 vtec also have this strainer?
Leaking oil is all you need to know. If there is an oil leak, it needs to be fixed, regardless of whether there is a CEL, or the car is still running well.
Great video!
Is this for a V6 also, I'm having trouble finding the location of the strainer.
Good stuff bro this video help a lot
@EyeOnAiman I dropped the NUT and cannot find it what so ever!! Do you have an idea on maybe where it fell too please let me know thank you!!
I had to do this last week. I thought this should be quick, I'll do it on my lunch break.....WRONG!
I have codes P1077,P2646,P0011 on my 2004 automatic, acura rsx it does that bucking thing I hope it’s just the solenoid any help pls ??I also have a video of it
Hey Im doing this on my acura rsx today im having the same code I replaced the whole vtec solenoid in the back and cleared the p2646 code it ended up coming back up. hopefully this fixes the the problem the car has no power and running on limp mode.
was it fixed?
True mechanic works rain or shine, or snow!
I really need your help to fix my 2005 Honda Accord LX 2.4 i- vtech
Did It do the job?
Good video I won’t remember the name of the tools but appreciate you saying them, I usually say the other one when I’m yelling at my kid. you should do one on the name name of tools, just saying.
Very good bro.

Gonna replace it for him soon
Never had a problem or code pop up though
Same part # (0:31)for 2005 CR-V EX?
Thanks much !!!!!
p2647 rocker arm oil pressure switch (a) circuit high voltage vtec system stuck on
👍👍👍
thanks
salji salji pun kau layan jugak ye Aiman
I changed these selonide and rocker arm oil pressure this code shows
If that was me making those same mistakes, the neighborhood air would be filled with F bombs, which could be heard from a mile away. No, I don't have much patience anymore, so I tend to get angry when I screw up here and there. Hence, I try to make sure that children and animals are not in the vicinity. 😉
Those bolts are not 60 foot pounds
Dude I know u cold as fuck but good video Bless You
Thanks that is we’re my oil is leaking from
Freaking Acura design it to pay a fortune for labor
This is so painful watching you, because everyone knows you have supervisor who says what should you do,but your hands betrayed you on every move you make.
Bro I replace Everything all the part and I still have the light on 🥲
You can try resetting the error code using OBDII tool or disconnect the battery and see of the error code comes back. If it does then it is something else.
