It’s great but very noisy in the forest. Also incredibly hard on GPU; 4090 struggles with major stutters during traversal, and hard crashed with a mild overclock
It's interesting topic about the complainers of the graphics with the "Why is it needed PT to look this good, to get decent AO or shadows" "devs lazy" etc etc... Why do you actually complain? It's almost as if you don't want visuals to progress? Some mention "RDR2" and "TLOU P2" as good looking alternatives that have "comparatively" similar visuals to PTd Indie Jones. I just can't stress enough how absurd that comparison is. Let's partake TLOU P2 as a direct example since it is also linear game. TLOU P2 has been developed by naughty dog and on that game worked more then 2100 people (lead by 350 dev count studio). The amount of work done and time spent to make it even resemble something like path tracing can never be done by a normal sized studio or team like machinegames nor 95% of studios out there. The amount of polish that is needed to make it not colapse with raster artefacts is just extremely time consuming. Just one angle of the room that you spend even less then a minute was worked on not hours but days. baking, rebaking, moving lights around, reordering lights, changing lights function to try and match the overall room lighting to the path traced reference from all angles (because with raster, you may closely match 1 angle to look like PTd reference but as soon as you move around, it can completely break the look, and does). With path tracing first and foremost, developers (artists designers etc) don't have to spend time mimicking and closely matching graphics to the PTd reference anymore (which is most of game development time actually). So not only does it streamline the game development, avoids spending time fixing all the broken looking stuff that inherently raster does, it allows developers more time to actually spend IMPROVING the look of the rooms and environments as all that time spent trying to match the PTd reference, they can spend improving THE PTd reference. Path tracing makes the game look better 100% of times (and for gods sakes don't confuse realism with path tracing. Path tracing doesn't make graphics realistic looking, it just makes the light and shadows behave physically accurate. ART STYLE is what defines the visual impression whether it be realistic style or cartoonish style but in both cases physically accurate illumination is what makes the art come alive). Whole essay can be written about why ray tracing and path tracing is a positive and must for games and that the switch should have occurred even sooner. By the time next gen consoles hit, games should be requiring ray tracing as minimum req.
