I'd love to see what the poly counts for all of these models are at LOD0 to really show how much of an improvement they are. Poly count have increased massively and incorporate so many tris that having the numbers would be an amazing way of showing off how far we've come in the 20 or so years since the originals
I know it's not the same game but Batman in Arkham Knight was over 100,000 polys. He had a lot of moving mechanical parts in the suit too. Usually organic things won't be as high as this but expect it to be less than this for a current gen game, then factor in if it's a main character they would get priority over NPC's and creatures. Then also factor in animation, if they have moving parts or multiple tentacles for example, expect more polys so they can deform without textures being warped or the geometry stretching badly. other things like hair can increase poly count high too :)
I definitely miss the original zombie moans but the new models are a lot creepier since you can more easily pick out the details like Birkin's agonized face as he's slowly absorbed into the more mutated forms. Plus, I truly appreciate them giving Jill freaking pants. She knew she was fleeing the city in the original. No woman as sensible as Jill is fleeing anywhere in a halter top and skirt unless she was caught unaware. (Ada doesn't count. She went to a remote village in a dress, clearly she cares more about fashion than function.)
Jill was caught UNAWARE. Even in the original where zombies ambushed her in her apartment and the building exploded in a gas leak. It is much better I believe than Nemesis just coming in. It's like having early ejaculation.
As others have stated, i also agree that the zombie sounds in the original were scarier. Also the originals had some of the best and most terrifying, atmospheric background music in videogame history.
@PUFB "My alcoholic uncle stumbling around at night" - this description actually sounds more fitting for the new zombie sounds. The old zombies sound like they're moaning as if they're in pain. Which is why they sound so creepy imo.
Every remake enemy is super impressive, but man the final forms for Mr X and Birkin are incredible. They're some of the most incredible models in video games period, not just in RE.
I absolutely love Birkin in RE2. I love as the G-virus takes over his body, his skeletal system and face disappear into the monster abdomen, and by G-4 he's been completely consumed and erased. However, I do love how the remake showed his head getting spit out the side on G-5 in such a grotesque sick way. Loved this!
The fact that you can still see his human face in two of his forms makes Birkin the scariest RE design of all up there with Lisa Trevor and the mutant fetus from 8
It just amazes me how detailed technology is nowadays, and it is even more apparent when shown next to modern day graphics. I was in junior high school when Resident Evil 2 came out and I thought the graphics at the time were the most lifelike I've ever seen. It just blows my mind at what can be done now and I love to think what will happen in another ten years.
It's funny how they gave regilar Mr. X an upgrade but also kinda nerfed his mutated form. Fight wasn't as memorable as the OG but he still kicks my ass to this day on both versions.
I just replayed RE2 on PS1 in these days... and I can say that RE2 is still a great game, but some things are not so epic as I remember, especially the final fight with Mr.X. Basically you shoot him 3 times, then you can use the rocket launcher. I was disappointed because I remember that the fight was amazing, with much more of shooting and evading. Basically nostalgia is tricky :P .
From 1998 to 2020, we've witnessed the evolution of video game graphics. Not just Resident Evil, but the entire video game industry. I just imagined what happens if we bring 2020 video game graphics to the people of 1998 and see their reactions. And btw, the most *SCARIEST* B.O.W. monster weren't just G-Birkin, but also 9:41
The original is scarier in my experience because i was a kid and the zombies had scarier voices for both moaning and the sound of their footsteps especially since the camera is fixed so you don't know how close they are, Mr X is less scary in the original RE2 but his music is spooky especially when he breaks through a wall or when he comes from nowhere unexpected, bottom line is RE2 remake is beautiful and scary but the original is horrifying, i remember I couldn't sleep after watching the transformation of will smith (marvin) and having to kill him
yeah the screeching and moaning are really terrifying in the originals combined with the janky polygon are the best combo, still remember i used to be afraid that mr.x will bust through my walls everytime i want to sleep
The original PS1 trilogy was way more atmospheric than the last 2 remakes. The fixed camera perspective allowed for good tension and it set up the scares much better than 3rd person in my opinion. You could hear that something was there, but you couldn't see it until you close in, making yourself vulnerable. This is also due to great sound design. The first few Resident Evils felt like horror adventure games, while the new ones feel like 3rd person zombie shooters, even with the item management and survival horror themes. The best example of Resident Evil done right is the first Remake (2002). They managed to keep the same atmosphere of the original, but with better graphics and sound design. It always felt like the player had to figure out where to go next without the game holding your hand the whole time. The fixed camera system is a lost art these days, but it still has so much potential. They should at least include it as an option for the old school fans of the series.

You know what would've been great for the Nemesis transformations? Just having him walk upright instead of running like a dog. It should've been a more imposing presence. Especially since every time you confront it is during QTE's or large areas. I think it worked for Birkin in RE2R it should've worked on Nemesis too I think (note that I wouldn't mind if he occasionally went towards you in all 4's , but I think you get my point).
agreed, personally, i'm not a huge fan of his second stage in the remake, it just seems so out of place to me. but i suppose i'm judging based off the OG nemesis.
Still feel like the reason why I personally find the original models scarier (not only cause I adore the PS1 graphics) is because the color palette of everything in the remakes is greyish. I feel like they changed every skincolor to grey to make them look...dead (I dunno) and cause they turned all skin grey they had to turn everything else greyish too. Flesh, clothing even the blood. Thats what I think
I know you commented a month ago, but back then considering limitations and design choices, even scary games looked cartoons and colorful to stand out but either hardware now they can make things look more realistic and the grey is mainly for the darker tones and more atmospheric layouts. The originals colors wouldn't work in remake (in my opinion) cause imagine Jill wearing a really bright blue shirt than a faded ish looking one. Good example is Brad Vickers in 3, it's fine in the OG but the bright colors stand out too much and look off in the remake. Not bad but it's noticeable
The original models are way better for the reasons you said. New one is over designed and some changed for the worse. I would prefer a proper remaster over the remake. Puzzles me why they can't use the same textures but add more polygons to smooth everything out. Would be a hit.
Taking the PS1 originals, and putting them in a PS3 connected to a smart TV like my 4K roku, and then turning the PS3 upscaler on, they look so good. Oh and of course there's always the option to smooth out the pixels or leave them as is. I like both options. My PS3 upscales my PS1 games to 1080P and OMG they look so good.
Man, the nostalgia...This video just gets me a little emotional to see how far they have come growing up with the original to the remakes. There's also a FF7 compariosn video that does the same
I love the details in Resident Evil 2 remake including 4! The zombies look on point with their skins rotting and gushing especially the way they walk. I especially love the graphics, challenging bosses including extra missions between characters such as Ada escaping from the furnace and Sherry running/hiding from Chief Irons!
Something about the originals textured graphics that make it way more frightening, i remember being 6 or 7 years old asking my dad to come watch me play, because i was too scared.
Both the remake and original models look amazing and the monsters creepy looking, except the nemesis first form, for some reason the original will always be way creepier to me. That's just me I guess
The remake version is bad across the board. They made him a generic mess of plastic sheeting and duct tape and fins and more specifically, he doesn't have eyes in the remake. He also doesn't have the big ass staples or stiches going down his face in the remake. Like, the later versions look cool, but the humanoid ones don't.
I was 8 when RE2 first came out and my teachers always got me in trouble and called my parents saying i was disturbed cause im “creating violent art”… I was drawing William Berkin 🤣 she explained it was a video game that my over aged siblings played.
It's so weird seeing how far we've come. I'm born in 1996 so these older graphics are nothing new to me but it still feels very nostalgic just seeing how much everything has improved. I would've never imagined back then that this is how games would look like right now.
Fantastic video, ive always tried finding a video like this to show the wife how far these games have come since i first played them as a kid to now as an adult. You sir/madam are a saint
Capcom should honestly release a Resident Evil Classic Collection for current consoles, composed of the original versions of Resident Evil 1,2,3 and Code Veronica all on the same disk or in the Switchs case card.
I agree. They could optimize it to fit wide screen TVs instead of having to stretch the picture. I'm not sure how much work that would take, but they did it with Zero, and the Remake (2002) for the remasters. I would also like to have achievements or trophies as well. A plus would be to include a finished version of RE 1.5 too. I wonder why Capcom hasn't thought of doing this yet.
Yes please. Problem is there's some work involved and Sony distinctly doesn't GAF about emulation. The PC originals are no longer playable on modern hardware, which is why you have to emulate, so that'd be nice. They don't exist on Xbox at all other than the Code Veronica HD port, either, and then there is no CV on PC still so it's a clusterfuck at best. Not impossible, for sure, plenty of PS1 exclusives have come to PC and other systems, like Chrono Cross, but is Capcom going to bother is the question.
The remake obviously looks phenomenal, but i think the biggest improvement was the plant 43’s when i first came across them and saw my handgun didn’t do anything to them i had to pause and re evaluate everything lol

The original artists were amazing to do these with the hardware limitation of the time impose by the Playstation 1 and make it work so well in the game. True masters at their craft.
I was satisfied with the remakes and its always cool to see just how far games have become as art. Even if some nowadays rely solemnly on visuals rather than Gameplay.
I dunno what it is, but the sounds the zombie made in the original felt more bone chilling tbh. They sound like humans but they're suffering and begging you to put them out of their missery.
I love the original PS1 aesthetics. It is too bad how short that era of gaming was. Would be really nice if we managed to get more games out of it, and not only RE games, but others in general. The limitations in graphics left a lot of room for imagination and creativity from the designers.
Sorry to say but i prefer og Jill more, every previous version of Jill looked and acted in a similar way,but Remake Jill acts and looks and almost feels like a completely different character.
I'll start by saying that I wasn't a fan of the Remakes (even though I really wanted to enjoy Re2R). That being said, some designs actually spook me: the Licker, for example, has never been so terrifying, so kudos for them. The gore system definitely deserves some praise. As for the zombies, there's something about OG RE3 that makes them even more scarier. There's one model in specific, a zombie with half its body red from being chewed up. Low poly enemies are more scary and oh boi, the amount of zombie models for the classic was a very neat touch. Nemesis...... just... why? Was there a need to change anything from his original design? A trash bag "coat" and that nasty face, not even delivering the "STARS" line. They did Nemmy dirty with the "remake"
I like them, graphically. I really do. But I really don't like the gameplay. I think RE2R is acceptable, gameplay wise - the only annoying gameplay issue I have is that on higher difficulties you literally end up killing some of the same zombies like 3 or 4 times each. Storywise, not so much. Also the fact that they totally removed the zapping system and the true scenario system from RE2R, then homogenized the scenarios with an annoying ever present Tyrant is unforgivable. There isn't enough of a difference between Claire and Leon whether it's 1st or 2nd run. Nemi says STARS exactly once, at the very beginning of the game in the interactive intro, and never again. A sincere narrative failure to be honest when you consider the Nemesis sole purpose of being deployed was to hunt down the S.T.A.R.S. Vickers somehow knew this while he stood outside her apartment building, yet never has any encounter with the Nemi in the remake. So, ??????? And then on that note there's the fact that they rearranged things, changed things that didn't need changing, ignored half the game, etc. Like having Brad bite Marvin and then getting shot a million times by Carlos, instead of being killed by the Nemesis like he should have - in RE3Nemesis most iconic scene. Really, the remake as a whole was a narrative failure. It's not clear why it's even happening or what her goal is.
(RE2) Overall, personally I prefer the original designs (not to say the remake models aren't impressive as hell). I think that the og ones are more creepy, and much more sad - though I did think the og game also conveyed a feeling of tragedy more. There's something about the og zombies that just looks so sad, and along with the dog they seem more like actual people just with something a little "off". I also preferred og Tyrant's model, especially when mutated. The smooth face made him feel like he was created to be a god? (Not sure how to explain it, but The Magician from The House of the Dead is another good example). I thought that Birkin's movements in the og were more sinister and more "human", rather than the struggling shambling of the remake. I really liked the Birkin G-2, and G-3 model in the remake over the original one, the detail is fantastic and G-3 looks absolutely mental. Again, G-Type Adult in the og looks more sad, but I love the animations in the remake.
I love this... the music is so somber... it makes one realize that these monstrosities were once human, in some cases... the whole story is sad when you think about it... I still love it though
RE2 remake is a great game, walking in the streets is very spooky, but by the time you arrive the police station and notice there is no lights, dude that destroyed my mind. Is very awesome
6:57 nemesis original is still better for me, good design and good animation but at this scene why He is look like lonely, is to make him look bad? I feel sorry to him
I still love the originals more lol. Nostalgic, challenging, creative. Something about it. It was revolutionary for the time they were released, and is the way they are meant to played IMO.

I love the updated Birkin forms and the way he grabs his face. Like you can see the pained expression on his face due to the mutation. Watching the way he moved in the updated version makes me wonder if he ever regretted doing that to himself in the process of the mutation. He knew it was going to happen, but damn...seeing him disappear with each form is kinda sad.
Fates worst than death wasn't more spot on than his case 😰
In my opinion, Ivy had the biggest and best transformation between original and remake. The new design is horrific in the coolest way!! 2:37

Its so cool that in the remake Birkin G-1 sometimes holds his head like he wants to escape from the virus. You can still see his human side.

A single model in the remake has way more polygons than the entirety of the original game 💀
If we compared the zombies, there are probably more tris in a remakes fingertip than in a whole PS1 model.
Ps1 models usually had 100 to 1000 polygons, 3000 was max on ps1 forgot wich game.
My favourite fact about RE8 is that lady D’s hiney has more polygons then the entirety of RE1
It’s insane how highly detailed the models are in the remake all the subtle details gotta appreciate the effort that went into these 3D models.
I love her new remake design anyways tbh. The jacket looks so good
Jill was caught UNAWARE.
I played RE2 recently and I agree RE2Original is scarier than RE2Remake, it gave me a lot of goosebumps.
You guys can switch to the original sound effects and music if you want!
@PUFB "My alcoholic uncle stumbling around at night" - this description actually sounds more fitting for the new zombie sounds. The old zombies sound like they're moaning as if they're in pain. Which is why they sound so creepy imo.
Who are these 'others"? A few dozen disgruntled fans? Lol.
I remeber the first time playing re2 on the ps1, i was freaked out, of course I was younger back then but still, it was scary
You can tell Capcom got a lot of inspiration from the Thing when coming up with the Birkin creature and their variants.
The thing is definitely one of the go-to inspirations for most body horrors

It's funny how they gave regilar Mr. X an upgrade but also kinda nerfed his mutated form. Fight wasn't as memorable as the OG but he still kicks my ass to this day on both versions.
I just replayed RE2 on PS1 in these days... and I can say that RE2 is still a great game, but some things are not so epic as I remember, especially the final fight with Mr.X. Basically you shoot him 3 times, then you can use the rocket launcher. I was disappointed because I remember that the fight was amazing, with much more of shooting and evading. Basically nostalgia is tricky :P .
Is it me or does the alligator in the original look pretty realistic? Like damn, those are some good graphics back in the day.
From 1998 to 2020, we've witnessed the evolution of video game graphics. Not just Resident Evil, but the entire video game industry. I just imagined what happens if we bring 2020 video game graphics to the people of 1998 and see their reactions.
And btw, the most *SCARIEST* B.O.W. monster weren't just G-Birkin, but also 9:41
I think the most drastic change of characters is probably on 2:10
The original is scarier in my experience because i was a kid and the zombies had scarier voices for both moaning and the sound of their footsteps especially since the camera is fixed so you don't know how close they are, Mr X is less scary in the original RE2 but his music is spooky especially when he breaks through a wall or when he comes from nowhere unexpected, bottom line is RE2 remake is beautiful and scary but the original is horrifying, i remember I couldn't sleep after watching the transformation of will smith (marvin) and having to kill him
yeah the screeching and moaning are really terrifying in the originals combined with the janky polygon are the best combo, still remember i used to be afraid that mr.x will bust through my walls everytime i want to sleep

Play it in HDR
The blood in remakes is actually way too colorful and bright to be undead blood, they should have made the blood darker and raise the roughness...
The original models are way better for the reasons you said. New one is over designed and some changed for the worse. I would prefer a proper remaster over the remake. Puzzles me why they can't use the same textures but add more polygons to smooth everything out. Would be a hit.
I love that they stuck to the original for the most part with zombies, they updated the graphics and left them be instead of replacing them
I like how the dogs didn't really change, they just got more realistic
Taking the PS1 originals, and putting them in a PS3 connected to a smart TV like my 4K roku, and then turning the PS3 upscaler on, they look so good.

Thats hl2, zombie sounds in both remake and og are just average.
I love the original PS1 aesthetics. It is too bad how short that era of gaming was. Would be really nice if we managed to get more games out of it, and not only RE games, but others in general. The limitations in graphics left a lot of room for imagination and creativity from the designers.
You should check out the demo disks (I think that's what they are called.) They go back to the ps1 aesthetic pretty well.
The original zombie woman 0:29 is basically zombie jill
love how they turned carlos into miguel from tekken lmao
-How many Birkin versions do you want in the game?
-Yes...
0:29 The most under-appreciated character in the franchise.
Every time someone does a project like this, the new models are more detailed but far less creative. They’re all so much more mundane in the remake.
I love this... the music is so somber... it makes one realize that these monstrosities were once human, in some cases... the whole story is sad when you think about it... I still love it though
It's called empathy. Something Umbrella totally lacks.

Birkin G2: More monster, less human
Birkin G3: Monster
Birkin G4: Monster dog
Birkin G5: Purse
Gotta love the final form on the original.
I prefer the og zombie groans to the remake's growls. They're somehow scarier for me.

I still cannot understand why people are hating so much on Nemesis. In the remake he is terryfying. His forms are little different considering old resident evil 3 , but they are fire
