Sony A7IV Overheating in Menu and Video

  • I am sharing my experience concerning overheating with my Sony A 7 IV. My two issues were when setting up the camera in the menu system and with video. The video overheating was not a major surprise, but overheating while in the menus was.
I recently had a chance to use the EOS R6 and had no issues with overheating. However, that camera has had several major firmware updates to improve performance when concerning overheating. I expect the same for the Sony A7IV.

I was able to speak with Sony support today. There will be a follow up video for this but here is the basic info below.
    1. Set the Auto Temp Off to High
    2. The overheating in the menus issue is currently under investigation by Sony.
    3. If you are experiencing overheating in video, this is what I was told in addition to setting auto off to high.
    Lower file format resolution
Use a tripod instead of handheld
    No direct sunlight
    No steady shot
    No wifi
    CFexpress Type A card
    Disable Proxy Recording
I was told if I wanted more information on future developments to utilize the Sony support website.

I have 2 a7iv's and have about 2 hours of test clips 4k 30 and 60 at 8bit and 10bit plus around 250 photos on each camera. I also plugged in the USB-C to charger with without powering off the camera to see if it would overheat and it did not. I even had my 4K monitor plugged in via HDMI. The body was warm obviously near the battery but not hot enough to power down. Enjoy your new a7iv camera but out of the 10 Sony cameras that I have owned in the past 3 years I have immediately turned them ALL to high the minute they power up for the 1st time. Only once I had 1 shut off, it might have had something to do with having it only 3ft directly above an open fire BBQ pit but with that said it still filmed in 4k 30 for over 45 minutes before it finally when into cool down mode.

This really makes me remember Diy Perks rebuild of the Canon R5 heatsink. I figured this was going to happen ever since it was announced, because it has a plastic back. Which means it doesn’t have enough thermal capacity on the front of the camera. So the processor is so powerful, that when they remove the metal back panel in order to save money. They cut the cooling performance by half. Of course they can fix it in firmware, but doing that will reduce the speed of the camera. Just like that video from Linus tech tips of when apple fixed an overheating issue, by reducing the clock speed.

I am doing more testing but I might be on to something concerning the over-temp in standard setting while in the menu system.
For those of you that have had the camera shut off while in the menus, was the camera being handheld?
I have done several tests and need to do more, but I am wondering if the IBIS system could be causing the camera to continue to generate heat while being handheld and if a firmware update that locks the IBIS in one place while in the menus would be a fix for this issue.
I am unable to replicate the auto off in the menus when the camera is stationary on a tripod or table. Handheld is different, around 20-30 minutes and then it shuts off. I plan to do several more tests.
Like I said, I have more tests to do and i could be way off on this hypothesis, but I will further test/document this in my down time.

I had the same thing happen to me as well - got an overheating warning while just setting it up poking through the menus in a room temperature environment. As a longer-term Sony user, setting the Auto Power Off Temp to High is pretty much a standard thing that most do, and that has shown to have little impact on the camera re: lifespan, record times, etc. over time. But, this model and how it handles heat dissipation and/or detects temperature seems to be a lot more finicky than many past ones.

For those of you who overheated in the menus - were you in video mode at the time? It seems to me like that's part of this overheating bug. In photo mode, I didn't have this problem.
I can hear/feel the autofocus motor working on my lens when I'm using the menu in video mode, even though I can't see the preview because the menu is open. That says to me that the sensor is still reading data, and the IBIS is still running, and the AF motor is running, and all of that is generating heat even though I'm not looking at the preview. When it overheated on me the first time, I was accessing the menus (with the screen against the body) in handheld, and it makes sense that it would generate a lot of heat. I didn't think it would be an issue since I wasn't recording, but apparently with the screen closed, it's enough heat. Once I let the camera cool down, I started trying more real-world scenarios like having the camera on a tripod with the screen flipped out and I've managed to drain one battery so far without any overheating notification.
Seems to me Sony needs to find a way to disable the sensor while the video menu is open so it doesn't generate so much heat while we're changing settings, and in the meantime, keep it flipped out while using the camera in video mode, even if you're just using the menu.

    • @JoeNDBAVIATION
      @JoeNDBAVIATION  2 роки тому

The XH-2 looks to be pretty awesome. I had been considering waiting for the new Fuji cameras but decided on the A7iv.
My follow up video in short will focus on a couple things, but this mostly. The camera is getting better with time and fewer overheats/longer times before auto-off in standard mode. There are still some outliers but overall it is getting better.
The best analogy is like the breaking in of a new engine. The initial temps and considerations are rather restrictive until you pass a certain amount of time. After that, the engine runs smoother and the thermals are better overall. For some reason, that is how my A7iv has been behaving, getting better with use.
The other reason I wanted the A7iv was for the autofocus. I tried out the S5 last year and returned it and then was able to barrow the EOS R6 with a range of lenses. The R6 was amazing, but I love the Sony even more, even with the current quirks! My wife doesn't allow me to share family videos, but the A7iv does amazing work with stills and video with my kids! The autofocus works even better than the R6 did and the videos look slightly better on the A7iv.

Alrighty. So… I’ve contacted Sony. Just as they’ve fixed overheating issues with the A1 and many other models with firmware updates, they have been receiving reports and their production team should be working on it. This is not an official statement, but given their history of fixing these issues, I’m sure this will also be taken care of.
In the meantime, this was their advice:
    1. Change the auto power off temperature setting from “standard” to “high.” This is one we already know.
    2. Turn on airplane mode so that it’s not drawing power constantly attempting to search for devices to pair with BT and NFC.
    3. Turn the screen brightness down to the lowest setting.
    4. Turn off proxy recording.
    5. Turn off focus breathing compensation.
Other tips I’ve seen around include:
    1. Keeping the screen flipped out and away from the body (which we know, also not always ideal depending on your situation).
    2. Leaving the battery door open (which we know, but may not be ideal).
    3. Attach a lens on the camera instead of the body cap (heat can dissipate through the lens better than through the body cap).
    4. Don’t cradle the entire body of the camera in your hands for a significant period of time going through the menus and setting up the camera.
    5. Don’t play with it in bed (or any other location where it may be “suffocating” on a blanket, on a pillow, etc., just like you wouldn’t with a laptop).
    6. Do not have the camera in video capture mode while going through your settings, as the sensor is currently programmed to pull power at all times in movie mode, creating heat.
If you have the body cap on, are cradling it fully with both of your hands coming into contact and covering most of the camera body, sitting in bed resting the camera in your hands on the blanket that’s on your lap, and you’re in video mode; it will probably overheat. Lol
However, the Sony representative I spoke to said “As of this time, there is no firmware update that will address it. This has been raised already to our product engineers.”
And while he could not give me an official declaration that there is a firmware update coming, the answers to the rest of my questions gave me great confidence that their engineers are working on it, and that we can look forward to a firmware update that should fix these issues, just as they did with the A1, A7SIII, and A7III before this.
So. I’d go far enough to say, hang on! The fix should be coming!

@@JoeNDBAVIATION and then, of course, there’s the question of whether I should trust Sony’s representative. Lmao.
There are two Somy cameras in my home, an A6000 and the A7IV. I have yet to see issues with either, but I haven’t used the A7IV yet (turned it on to play with settings quickly a couple of times). So… hopefully, they’re not just blowing smoke up my ass 🤣.

@@MichelleUretsky I appreciate all the help and info I can get. The A7 IV is my first Sony. I've had Cannon DSLRs before this and film Nikon and Olympus before that.
The A7 IV is a wonderful camera. I am so happy that I went full frame. I like it over the R6 as well. The sharpness and performance exceeds my expectations.
Setting the Auto power off temp to high solved all of my issues as well! I cannot duplicate the menu overheat issue in high, but in Standard easily can.
You will really like the A7iv. Wishing I had more to spend on lenses, but I am happy with the Sony 20mm G and Tamron 28-200.

Back in the day, when I was a teen, my first camera was a Canon Powershot S50. Still a phenomenal camera. After that was stolen, I got a Samsung (one of those with the front-facing live view displays for selfies). That was stolen on my honeymoon by someone who worked at the hotel. When I got back, I decided to buy a Nikon DSLR. I had that for a while. Then, in 2017, I got the Sony A6000. The A7IV is my new upgrade to full frame. I went with Sony because at this point, their cameras are much more fully-featured for their price points. And honestly, all of the cameras out there have overheating issues. The Nikon Z7II, the Canon R6. They all do. It’s almost inevitable.

Same issue,. Brand new Sony A7IV overheat warning while I was just moving through the menus for about 7 - 10 minutes. I did not even have a lens on the body. I placed a lens on the body and it did the same thing and showed the over heat warning while just moving through the menus. I tried a test recording last night 4k 24p 8 bit and it shut down after about 4 minutes and this was sitting on my desk recording s static object. I pulled the battery and let it cool off to room temp and tried again. This time it went for 9 minutes and I stopped the recording as I was getting tired. I turned the camera off and when I got up this morning I tried to turn the camera on and no response. The battery was completely drained. I am in the process of charging up my batteries to test again but my A7III never did this and my foolish self gifted my A7III to my son yesterday before testing this hot mess. :-(

Sorry about that! This camera has been a real learning experience for me. Like I said in the video, I have tried the S5 and the R6 with no issues concerning overheating. The high temp setting has solved my issues but I can reproduce all issues in standard auto off temp. I have an update video in the works, waiting to hear from Sony.

Its crazy that we have to deal with that for the camera that's $4k (in australia). Definitely a bit dissapointed, and scared to do any professional work for the clients with it.
