He got injured and went to the city ground to see the physiotherapist (dad’s mate). He was sat waiting in a corridor and Clough is walking down the corridor towards him. Green jumper, short white shorts and a squash racket in hand. Looks at my dad and says “Good morning, young man. Cup of tea?” He replies “Yes please” Clough then says with a big smirk “No, I meant get off your arse and make me one!!” Clough walks off, reappears a minute later with a cuppa for my dad. What a character.

I remember that his family owned a newsagents in West Bridgford in the 80s. I must’ve been 7 or 8 at the time and went in the shop one afternoon with my mother. Guess who was sat behind the counter!? I was an easily intimidated, wimpy kid but I remember the kind ,warm vibes Brian was giving off and I felt at total ease with him. He had a massive heart. He played all bar three of his league games in the Second Division and returned 251 league goals from 274 league starts- 213 starts, 197 goals for Middlesbrough- 61 starts, 54 goals for Sunderland. His career total including F.A Cup appearances and goals and Football League Cup appearances and goals along with the league with Middlesbrough and Sunderland- 296 starts in all competitions, 267 goals. A truly terrific record as Centre-Forward.

I work in further education as an engineering and aerospace lecturer and frequently have as a boss a person who knows nothing about education, aerospace or engineering, often an accountant. Of course I am nowhere near Cloughy, but identify with it being a lonely job to have a boss who isn't qualified to even appoint me, let alone assess my ability.

I watched Cloughies Forest at Villa a few times in the eighties and early nineties and they were always an away team that were entertaining to watch. Wish there were similar managers to Brian Clough in today's sterile football.

I watched Cloughies Forest at Villa a few times in the eighties and early nineties and they were always an away team that were entertaining to watch. Wish there were similar managers to Brian Clough in today's sterile football.
My mate Al met Clough a few times. On Friday night they would stay at Lea Green a Derbyshire sports Centre, away from the press.

A man who spoke words of wisdom , and whose ability was demonstrated by many successes . In the modern game , managers such as he and Graham Taylor , who also comes to mind , are sadly lacking .

Yep the question is how he would managed the England players from the late 1970s a crop of real excellence had come up and established players already..(Brooking, Keegan, Wilkins and Shilton)...i think very well.. a totally regressive decision by the FA that impacted the English national team for years, Greenwood was the wrong man...he was a temp at best..with Brian taking over from 1978 onwards..
