To win the European cup with forest once was unbelievable but to retain it the following year was simply unreal with a club of that size... outstanding manager one of the very best in English football history

I met him when I was a kid in the late 70’s. He was watching an amateur league football match and I asked for his autograph. He told me to wait until half time ! 😂 To be fair to him, I did and he gave me his autograph and was very friendly. Enigmatic genius and one of a kind. I wish he was still around.
One of the best managers for me. I love how he saw life and how straight forward and honest his answers were. I really felt for Cloughie when pride got the better of him in regard to his relationship with Peter Taylor. Friendship is one of the most precious things in this world and no matter what the cost in your pride you should keep it and hold on to it.. Seeing Brian realise this after Peter's death was very sad and it raised my awareness of what is truly precious in life.

He claimed that Lingard going to Forest was about money,, and in the very same breath, then went on to claim he would have got more money at West Ham. Think about that for a second, the total contradiction in one breath - because by definition, if that was true, then by definition Lingards move couldnt have been about the money. It's the ilk of these people who simply dont think before they talk, that should be washed away so that the rest of us can have some time to think about and enjoy the game. So much noise to cut through. ....and then dont get me started about agents. I could rant about those guys all day and a week!

He actually DOES know how to provide examples to talk about, but what clough was driving at, is that its not enough to have opinions on the game and try to convince everyone your opinion are right, what he was driving at is that you shouldnt get to sit in a studio and tell people how the gane should be played until you've got out onto a training pitch and got 11 guys to play in a way that proves you are right. What happened when Neville tried to do that? He bombed. He went to Valencia and proved he couldnt do it. I feel a bit bad for using him as the classic example because I really like the bloke, but at the end of the day he is the archetypal example of what clough was talking abuot. Gary Neville has for years tried to talk to people about how football should be played, but when given the chance to go out and actually do it, rather than talk about it, he completely flopped it. In Neville's defence, he'll readily admit this to be the case, he doesn't shirk it. Fair play to him for at least trying to go out and provide an example rather than just talk the talk, but thats exactly what Clough was getting at. Provide the example....win something.....get 11 lads to run through brick walls for you......THEN sit in a studio and tell people how it should be done once you've shown how its done.

How refreshing two men top of their game, Cloughie is an absolute legend we all know that but Frost was the ultimate tv interviewer as he actually listened to Brian and responded with questions related to the previous questions. Class.
I was born in 83, so have largely followed Brian Clough retrospectively. His famed confidence is something that continues to fascinate generations, because authentically it is only available to those who've seemingly conquered the one battle that endures through life, You versus You. We know that this cannot be entirely true, but to witness a person project it is contagious to those around them. That is a major part of being a great leader, having full conviction in one's ability to do a job or achieve an aim in life. It can't be taught, or there'd be universities making a killing. It's more than believing, it's KNOWING.
Clough is known for being arrogant, but it’s a deserved arrogance, but he was also a kind, humble and very gracious man. I sat next to him at the infamous coffee cup Derby vs Forest game in Mar 2004. My fella got some extra good tickets off an exec friend of his, the whole time I was awe struck, not daring to speak! I never said a word to him, which I deeply regret. He looked so poorly, but he was there with his grand kids and I didn’t want to bother him.
I started supporting Forest in 78 not because of Clough but over the years I realised he was the special one. We will never have a character like this in football again but these videos are priceless. Little did any of us Forest fans ( and wider ) know what was to come after this interview, so many cups. RIP old big ‘ ead.
Waching what he did with Forest in the 70s was another level. Avergae players giving it everything week in week out, getting better week in week in week. They really were fantastic to watch. He made John Robertson the best left winger in the world..enough said
I think he is dead honest. I do believe him when he implies that he likes/respects people, and needs them to be Good, appreciates sincerity... I think he was a real force for good, even if he rubbed some people up the wrong way. It is not ego but confidence that he had and we need people to be thoughtful and confident. As a Nottingham dweller, I was grateful he came to Forest soon after this interview :)

To do what he did at Leeds was impressive. He tried to get them to play proper football despite being winners already. He had it easy, didn't even need to change things but tried to. No manager now would do this now.
he not only tried to get Leeds to stop being a dirty team - but was faced with the whole team getting too old at the same time - signed McGovern who went on to great things at Forest ..Beckenbauer thought he was very underated later at Forest ....
I agree with Cloughie - I have spent years working based at home and was around my kids growing up - you maybe don't always appreciate the privilege but looking back I am the Dad of two well adjusted grown up adults and I never missed any of it - there are riches in life and there are RICHES. Kids never appreciate Dad's BMW on the drive when they are 5 years old but will always remember an afternoon on the beach or a trip to say a memorable museum with Dad.

He actually DOES know how to provide examples to talk about, but what clough was driving at, is that its not enough to have opinions on the game and try to convince everyone your opinion are right, what he was driving at is that you shouldnt get to sit in a studio and tell people how the gane should be played until you've got out onto a training pitch and got 11 guys to play in a way that proves you are right. What happened when Neville tried to do that? He bombed. He went to Valencia and proved he couldnt do it. I feel a bit bad for using him as the classic example because I really like the bloke, but at the end of the day he is the archetypal example of what clough was talking abuot. Gary Neville has for years tried to talk to people about how football should be played, but when given the chance to go out and actually do it, rather than talk about it, he completely flopped it. In Neville's defence, he'll readily admit this to be the case, he doesn't shirk it. Fair play to him for at least trying to go out and provide an example rather than just talk the talk, but thats exactly what Clough was getting at. Provide the example....win something.....get 11 lads to run through brick walls for you......THEN sit in a studio and tell people how it should be done once you've shown how its done.

How refreshing two men top of their game, Cloughie is an absolute legend we all know that but Frost was the ultimate tv interviewer as he actually listened to Brian and responded with questions related to the previous questions. Class.

I was born in 83, so have largely followed Brian Clough retrospectively. His famed confidence is something that continues to fascinate generations, because authentically it is only available to those who've seemingly conquered the one battle that endures through life, You versus You. We know that this cannot be entirely true, but to witness a person project it is contagious to those around them. That is a major part of being a great leader, having full conviction in one's ability to do a job or achieve an aim in life. It can't be taught, or there'd be universities making a killing. It's more than believing, it's KNOWING.
Even the great Muhammed Ali had a world for cloughie 😆 i greatly miss him even in his later years he was still very quick witted and carasmatic
Clough is known for being arrogant, but it’s a deserved arrogance, but he was also a kind, humble and very gracious man. I sat next to him at the infamous coffee cup Derby vs Forest game in Mar 2004. My fella got some extra good tickets off an exec friend of his, the whole time I was awe struck, not daring to speak! I never said a word to him, which I deeply regret. He looked so poorly, but he was there with his grand kids and I didn’t want to bother him.
Everyone's gotta love Cloughie - he shoots right from the hip, no bullshit allowed.

I started supporting Forest in 78 not because of Clough but over the years I realised he was the special one.
We will never have a character like this in football again but these videos are priceless.

I think he was a real force for good, even if he rubbed some people up the wrong way. It is not ego but confidence that he had and we need people to be thoughtful and confident.

As I personally remember his great Nottingham Forest side you could never doubt his football abilities . Watching this interview I am even more impressed by his personality and his views . maybe too honest to ever get the England job . We will never know if he could have done anything with England
I think he would. Even a weaker forest side in the 80s reached Cup semis and finals. He wouldve crafted the team around Hoddle.

To do what he did at Leeds was impressive. He tried to get them to play proper football despite being winners already. He had it easy, didn't even need to change things but tried to. No manager now would do this now.
he not only tried to get Leeds to stop being a dirty team - but was faced with the whole team getting too old at the same time - signed McGovern who went on to great things at Forest ..Beckenbauer thought he was very underated later at Forest ....

I agree with Cloughie - I have spent years working based at home and was around my kids growing up - you maybe don't always appreciate the privilege but looking back I am the Dad of two well adjusted grown up adults and I never missed any of it - there are riches in life and there are RICHES. Kids never appreciate Dad's BMW on the drive when they are 5 years old but will always remember an afternoon on the beach or a trip to say a memorable museum with Dad.
