  • Toni Reviews is a youtube channel dedicated to real rider reviews, from a London born and bred cockney. In this video I look at heat wrapping the exhaust down pipes on my Triumph Street Twin. One failed attempt I show you how NOT to do it and then hopefully show you some tips to help a successful installation.

    Ebay also do it but it wasnt as glossy in appearance, although the actual blend and weave of the ebay wrap looked tighter. I'd be interested to see what you go with and how it looks finished so drop some pics, comments in the comments box.

    Should have taken the header completely off then sanded/grind down to bare metal and coated with 2,000 degree Rust-Oleum primer and 2,000 degree Rust-Oleum flat black paint then wrapped it
    ! The metal would not rust as fast as it will now especially after soaking the wrap in water and putting it on the already rusting pipe

    • @ToniReviews
      @ToniReviews  3 роки тому +6

      JessieJ hi.mthanks for the feedback.bathe pipes are in pretty good condition and not rusted at all. The bike at the time was only a few thousand miles old and at that point a predominantly fair weather bike. Also the wet wrap was cured immediately by heating the pipes and evaporating any water. But you made some good points about the heat resistant rust primer which I will inspect the pieces next time I wrap and definitely consider doing. Many thanks for your comments you make some interesting and valid points which I’m sure people will find helpful. Thank you

    I heard ceramic coating pipes are good too. What does any one think? Maybe ceramic coat with a good wrapping? Also before you take it off wetting the old wrap might stop fiberglass floating around?

    Why did your first job fray like that. Is that common or did you do something improperly that caused that?

    • @ToniReviews
      @ToniReviews  2 роки тому +1

      Hi nik. Glad you asked. So a couple things. The first time I didn’t wet the wrap and that was an absolute nightmare. It needs to be wet to get a tight bind and also to cure (as it’s fibre glass). As the webbing is woven the ends have loose strands. As you wrap it around the pipe the loose strands and become unraveled and start to cause issues. I’ve done this job a couple of times now and what I’ve found works best is to fold over the end before you start wrapping and to cut any long strands before they become a problem. Hope this helps.

    • @ToniReviews
      @ToniReviews  2 роки тому +1

      @@nikhampshire hi nick. No I don’t personally have any experience with other colours although this may help. The wrap I used is titanium coloured and has a sheen to it. The wrap you see in the video that I was removing was after about 10k miles in all weathers riding, so it had taken a battering at that point. I’ve just recently replaced the wrap which wasn’t in as bad condition as you see in the video, but it was looking a little tired. This was after about 6k miles. So you are going to be replacing your wrap around every 6-8k miles roughly so I’d say go for the colour you want as inevitably it’s going to be a job that will need to get done anyway, so go for the one you like. Hope this helps 😊

    Hi! Would you say that the wrap accelerates the rusting of the exhaust? If so, do you think that soaking the fibers in wax could work ok against rust? Thanks a lot, and great bike!

    • @ToniReviews
      @ToniReviews  2 роки тому +1

      Hi. I’ve heard stories of wraps accelerating rust but I can’t say that’s true or not. My pipes underneath the wraps seem ok. One person did mention maybe prepai ting the exhausts with heat resistant paint before wrapping which sounded like a good idea. If anything I would say the wrap probably has a degree of protection against the elements for the pipes. As for wrapping them in wax this wouldn’t work as the wax would melt away once the pipes are hot. Also the pipes don’t stay wet as the heat from the exhaust dries out the webbing almost instantly. Hope this helps

      These are tiny glass fibres embedded in the skin. Unfortunately there’s not much you can do, other than take a few baths to wash yourself down and towel dry yourself to brush/ break the tiny fibres and let them work their way out. I did the same thing first time I did it.
