  • Some people asked how to wrap your exhaust components and because I needed to do it for the BRZ's Over Pipe I figured it was a good chance to show everyone! This technique will work on any exhaust manifold or Exhaust components that you need to wrap. I HIGHLY SUGGEST USING THE COATING SPRAy OR YOUR PIPES WILL CORRODE!

    This video is a good foundation for those that haven't wrapped exhaust. However, titanium wraps don't need to be soaked and expanded to be applied - they can be wrapped dry. Additionally, titanium wraps require 4-5 very light coats since the silicone won't absorb as well as fiberglass. I'm stressing this again due to the fact that between every coat with titanium wraps, you must heat-cure it at 400-425 degrees Fahrenheit between 1.5-2 hours. The heat-curing process will prevent any moisture from seeping in.

    they make lacing or safety wire plires that lock and spin when you pull on them. don't make the twist on the wire too tight though. it will break with vibration. not sure you need the wire in the middle sections though.

    I have a question for you: I have the Grimmspeed catted downpipe on the way and was planning on wrapping it just like you did in this video. Yesterday I was at Surgeline setting up my tune appt and was talking about my plans with the guy at the front desk. He recommended that I do not wrap the downpipe. Being in the NW with the weather it can get wet and have other things down there stick to it and is just not necessary is what he said. Again he wasnt the person doing the tuning and some of the things he was telling me seemed questionable based on what Ive learned on your channel and other sources. So should I skip wrapping like he said or stay with my plan?

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 роки тому +1

      When it comes to wrapping if it is not fully sealed water can get in and degrade the downpipe quick, we get a lot of water up here so it's very plausible for it to happen. It works very well for heat control but also has its come backs as well. You dont ned to wrap the downpipe but either option works

    Concerning the hi-temp silicone spray DEI says, "While not required for Titanium exhaust wrap, HT Silicone Coating will protect and prolong the life of the wrap. DEI recommends a minimum of three coats, *each heat cycled for curing *before* applying the next coat*. To cure, HT Silicone Coating needs to reach a temperature of 400°F for approximately 2 hours. Allow to cool before applying the next coat."

      Yes. I ran it on my track bike for just that reason. Works great. Would also suggest adding a heel guard so your boot doesn't wear out the wrap. Lots of cheap heel guards for exhaust out there.

    Why did you crop out the most important part? You didn't show the actual tying of the end of the wrap. Through the magic of editing the stainless tie-wrap just appeared. Done.

    Im re-watching this video and can I ask because im still learning about parts and cars. Why did you need to wrap your overpipe? What other components off the exhaust are you going to wrap and im assuming its prep for the turbo?

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 роки тому +1

      I wrapped this one because it wraps over the front subframe near some suspension bushings, the pipe came with the wrap so I saw it as an opportunity to show how to wrap. But for this piece when the tirbo parts come in ill prob remove it

    awesome video once again, I have a question with that wrap as I have a 2003 wrx with a varex full turbo-back exhaust would it be worthwhile to take off the downpipe to wrap it to try and eliminate some of the heat in the engine bay?

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 роки тому +1

      It would help to reduce the hear soak, but if you do decide to do it make sure that you coat it so it won't erode over time 🔥

    "Sprayed an entire can of spray paint into my face".. That must hit dedication, I'll keep watching.
    DEI states that the titanium exhaust wrap is to be installed dry, as it is far more flexible than the previous fiberglass based wrap. Further, I dont know about subarus, but my exhaust gets awfully hot. Certainly hot enough to evaporate any moisture the wrap may absorb. I will say however, I do like the idea of using safety wire rather than the stainless lock ties.

    A great tutorial video. The only thing you forgot to mention is WHY do you do this?
    I think I know why, but a full explanation of the benefits of heat tape wrapping headers and pipes like this would have been a good bit of content to have in this video.

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 роки тому +1

      Should have mentioned it, but I did it because it will be in an area that can melt plastic, but for performance reasons it helps keep the heat in. Downside is that It can crack exhaust components from the retained heat

    Is that silicon spray really necessary? I mean, is water really going to get under the warap and corrode a pipe that's like 500 degrees?.. I'd think it would stay pretty dry just from the heat..
    I don't know either way, I'm asking..
