A Masterpiece From Tamil Nadu That Will Leave You In Tears | Karnan Review | Dhanush, Mari Selvaraj

  • #Karnan starring #Dhanush and directed by #MariSelvaraj is a masterpiece in storytelling according to me. Tamil Cinema and their films that especially star their biggest superstars always amaze me, for their synergy of art and commerce. The film is a great example of how formula is intended for business whereas communication is the purpose of art! The more time Bollywood takes in catching up to Tamil cinema, the larger will be the gap and the audience will understand who is taking more leaps towards excellence. I hope you like the Karnan Movie Review & Analysis.

I wouldn't necessarily say he's submissive. At the climax, he's still pari still has the moral high ground. His character was innately innocent until he faced castism, and pari itself is "comparatively" better previlige to have education avenues. While in karnan even the mere existence is opposed

@@rajashekar7893 I don't think that's being submissive, he's helpless and innocent is more of a right word. Submissive means he's conforming to the authority. But pari doesn't conform, he rebels, but just in his own way, through education, because he saw through principal of the college what education can bring to dalit. That becomes the point of infliction in him, untill then he also shows his anger towards everyone, becomes agressive towards his bullies in college, even to Jo. But once he sees through his principal it changes him.

Karnan from Mahabharata, the great warrior and archer born to a queen yet abandoned by her. He is raised amongst suta (Charioteer caste). He still has the ambition to learn archery which is denied to him. He doesn't give up and lies to Parshurama about his identity and learns Dhanurveda and all other scriptures at prodigious speed. The sad event starts happening now as he is cursed twice, once for lying about his caste as lord Parshuram finds it out due to Indrac's trickery and once he is cursed by another rishi for mistakenly killing his calf. Both these curses is what becomes the reason for Karna's ultimate demise. He then goes to Hastinapur and shows his skill in the exhibition meant for princes and let's everyone know his intention to fight Arjun, his arch rival who is another famous archer and is expecially known for being son of king of gods Indra. But Karna is stopped and his lineage is questioned, Bhima even abuses his entire caste for daring to oppose the princes instead of driving chariots after he recognised Karna's foster father charioteer Adiratha. Duryodhan uses the opportunity to recruit the formidable warrior at his side against Pandavas and shuts Bhima up by asking Bhima to challenge great warriors on the battlefield instead of badmouthing their caste and makes Karna the king of Anga thus making him an equal. Karna is so overwhelmed that he pledges his loyalty to Duryodhana and goes onto win the entire world for his sake in his famous digvijaya (conquering four directions). Karna is also known for his charitable nature, he was an ardent lord Surya's devotee and would worship the lord from dawn until noon and wouldn't Deny anything to anyone during that time especially, he was known for his love of giving which is once again is exploited by Indra the father of Arjun who comes in a disguise and begs Karna for his divine kavach kundal attached to his body that made him invincible. Karna knows the identity of who has come yet true to his words he slices off the armour and gives it to the king of gods. Finally the day of war has come, Karna is already demoralised as Krishna and Kunti try to persuade him to change sides and reveal that he is Pandavas elder brother. Yet the great Karna doesn't accept their proposal. Krishna even offers him entire world to rule and Draupadi as his wife but he denies for his friendship and loyalty. Duryodhan gave him recognition when the society was against him. He also denies to be called Kunti's son and wants the world to call him Radheya after his foster mother Radha from Suta's caste. So Karna thus fights from Kauravas side but Kunti manages to score a boon from the Daanveera that her 4 sons would be spared as she knows Arjun can't be killed with Krishna as his protection. Karna fights beautifully for days sending Lacs of Pandava warriors to yama's abode, he does as he has said and spares 4 Pandava brothers. Finally he faces off with Arjuna on 17th day. Karna is having the upper hand as expected since Krishna has already saved Arjuna twice from certain death but the curses of Karna activate and the great warrior's chariot wheel gets stuck on the ground rendering him immobile. His second curse is to forget his knowledge of Dhanurveda thus the supreme warrior who rose from a humble background is killed in an unfair manner as he is trying to take out his chariot wheel and distracted. It's said that all the people from heaven and earth cried aloud when the great and righteous Karna with Dharma in his soul was killed.

Although 'Samy' literally means 'God', the prefixes actually carry the weightage. In this setting, these is considered 'names of poor / lower', while 'Karnan' is considered as 'Decent' (that represents something higher). Hero's dialogue meant to say, when Kandaiah's (lower name, as Iaiya- also sounds Ayya that means Sir) son can have a bettername as 'Kanna Bhiran' (lord Krishna), there is no problem. But when hero's father Madasamy (considered lower) name his son as 'Karnan' (cosidered decent), you have a problem". Dear Jammy,
I had tweeted this right after I saw the teaser within a few minutes of its release. The name 'Pariyerum Perumal' literally means 'the god astride a horse'. But that title had a metaphorical meaning in that film. In 'Karnan', we see that happening literally. 'Karnan' himself is the 'Pariyerum Perumal', quite literally. Even Mr BR (Mr Baradwaj Rangan) had pointed this out in his review of the film. And then there's a silhouette of Dhanush on the horse, wielding his sword (at 3:34 in this video). Did anyone notice how it looks like Karnan is riding on a unicorn? A unicorn symbolizes freedom, among other things. But this is only my interpretation of a specific shot. I'm yet to watch the film. Waiting for it to arrive on OTT.
PS. The word 'Perumal' is pronounced 'Perumaal', and the name Mari (as in Mari Selvaraj) is pronounced as 'Maari' (Remember the popular Dhanush-starrer?).
    Best,
    Murali

The Sanskrit version over exaggerates the incident and manipulates some truths. Karnan is actually a goat, yes you heard me right he's a goat. A goat which has kundals in its ears. You can search in Google images. The Pandavs were actually the Pandya dynasty of Tamils. And Kauravas were the kuravas of Kerala. And krishna existed between Tamil Nadu and Kerala and acted as a middle man, trying to convince both the dynasties.

I remember at theatre when last shot pan out where karnan let loose for the music of Para I lost it . Stood up and gave an applause with tears.

Karnan...an absolutely classy craft with exceptional performances and magnificent making. The main feature of this film is the specific politics that conveys in heartfelt manner and, which is very intensely articulated by its creators. The symbolic representations of issues which dealt with it were particularly noteworthy. Racism, Discriminations, Oppression, Power Corruption, Determination for Survival...each and every aspect of the society was explicitly conveyed here...
Hats off to Mari Selvaraj & Team for an outstanding movie experience.🎦
