Harley-Davidson CVO is an Expensive Headache to Own

  • Harley-Davidson CVO motorcycles are exclusive and expensive. Expensive is one thing but exclusive is where our problems begin. With exclusivity comes a limited production number and that means you're not going to be able to get certain parts should something happen to your motorcycle. Harley-Davidson CVO motorcycles retain more of their value if they are left alone and close to what they came with from the factory. If you have missing parts such as fairings, tour packs or windshields the value of that CVO can suffer. Not to mention if you have damaged paint and decide to not go back exactly how the bike came from the factory!

Back in '10, the '09 CVO ultra was in a sandwich accident (rear ended and drove forward). Hauled back to local HD dealership. 11k damage, took 9 months to get bike back. The paint was the hangup. Many errors in paint etc. Kept the bike for 10 more years. Was always concerned about another event. Took some of the joy out of owning a CVO bike.

My 110th Anniversary paint FLHTCUSE8 is #414/1100. I have one paint chip in the front fender about 1/8”. A new fender in Obsidian black Pearl that’s pre-painted is $1200. Mine has the SE Stage 4 117 race kit and full V&H headers and stock CVO mufflers from a 2014, and 14” apes. It’s at almost 76k miles and counting. I enjoy it almost daily.

Ha, funny you mentioned the paint. Had my 2015 fltruse backed into about a year ago while parked. Inner and outer fairing as well as the front fender clocked in at $8300 including labor. The bike sat at the dealership for over three months waiting on “painted parts.”

I own several HD motorcycles, it's my hobby. The only brand-new Harley I have ever owned was the first one I bought almost 30 years ago (I still own and ride it.). I learned to work on these bikes and the engines when necessary and as preventative maintenance. Learning this skill changed my perspective on bike ownership quite a bit. I ride with friends who have brand new CVOs and those with old bikes, we all enjoy the ride equally regardless of what we paid or what brand we ride. Yesterday, I bought another used Harley from a private party. I did my inspection, test-rode it, and brought it home. On the low end, I estimate I saved over $25K, instead of buying brand new. Love the channel and your points of view, ride safe brother!

Buy a Harley, use it, maintain it, strap things to it, ding the paint work, make parts for it, saw lumps off it, drop it, enjoy it,,,,,, or buy a Harley because you’ve seen a few films and have no personality, find out a Harley doesn’t give you a life, then moan about all the things wrong with it, get disgruntled, sell it and go back to bingo and watching generic Hells Angel dramas.👍👍👍

I’ve had most motorcycle types and brands in my forty year riding career and the thread that linked them all was l rarely had anywhere to put them apart from a cover, were often my main/only transport and l lost the love/time to endlessly polish the damn thing years ago. My softail slim is coated with scotoil 7/365 protection spray and is washed when l get the chance. I live on a farm and to get from my storage area to the track it’s a mud fest! They don't leak oil like the shovels, but a Harley that doesn't have a little oil under or on it, you want to check and see if it has any oil. The TC and M8 are no exceptions. My friends with 14,000 miles on his 2019 SG already has oil coming from the sending unit. My tc88 seaps around the stator grommet that goes into the primary. That's just a trait of air cooled engines. a Volkswagen air cooled engine that is driven regularly has got small seaps and leaks . Nature of the beast.

Back in 2020, I saw a nice 96 cubic inch Deluxe for sale. I really wanted it. I told my wife I was keen to get it. I contacted the owner, but he wasn't even willing to communicate (he probably had more issues than Marvel Comics do). Two weeks later a Softail Slim came up for sale ... cheaper! I told the wife I found something better for less (but that didn't impress her). So I ended up with the Slim, a perfect 'daily driver', not a 'garage queen'. The Slim is no rat bike, but I don't worry if I scrape the floorboards or the exhaust. I've got some aftermarket bits on it, and it wouldn't win any prizes in a show contest, but I'm pretty confident it will just stay the way it is forever. Of course, I look after it, but it's a daily workhorse and I'm glad that H-D made this model.

I liked this video for two reasons: -1: I’ve changed several things in my chieftain and have kept all the OEM parts in boxes that the new parts came in. -2: Indian is known for having soft paint and so I have my chieftain coated with a graphene coating, and the pursuit I’m taking delivery of in may will be getting the same treatment asap. I highly recommend nano or graphene coating for anyone who values their bike’s paint… really protects and maintains the original paint

I've heard this statement as long as I've been interested in motorcycles , "Harley Davidson motorcycles are for people who are mechanics and mechanically inclined." As I've discovered over almost 25 years of owning and riding different motorcycles, being mechanically inclined is a plus for any motorcycle owner. My Hondas have required just as much maintenance as my Harley and at this point, my Harley runs and rides, my Honda is down beacuse of a running issue that being a pain to find. Bottom line, if you have enough money to keep your bike being taken care of at the dealership then buy whatever you want. When you don't have enough money to have the dealership do your work then you will want to become familiar with it yourself. This channel is great for those who want to learn about servicing and taking care of your bike. Thanks gixerfoo for all you do.

    • @ckthompson7928
      @ckthompson7928 Рік тому +1

@Peter Angles maybe you've never had to deal with any of the mechanical issues of Honda because you don't keep them long enough? It sounds like you had a lot of bikes. What I dislike is that I cannot get any aftermarket performance parts for my Honda VTX1300. No cams, No Big bore kits, and anything that says it fits Honda is about twice as expensive as the same shit that fits Harleys that I have installed on my Honda.. I love Honda, cars and bikes. I've owned more Honda motorcycles than I have Harley's at this point in the game, and no matter what mechanical issues Harley's have they are infinitely rebuildable, performance parts and rebuild kits are plentiful. My Honda "JC" is his name is a wonderful bike plenty of power and performance for a stock bike. But when I got comfortable and used to that performance there were no options for me to go anywhere else except for a jet kit and air cleaner upgrades. I've even gone as far as thinking about buying a used 1300 engine to tear apart and see what performance upgrades I could do with machine work on factory parts, doesn't matter as I would have to have a custom-made camshaft, to take advantage of the bigger ports, or displacement I might add with machine work. I'm not a snob when it comes to my machines I like all makes and models. If you walk around and believe Harley is the only motorcycle to own then you've never ridden a Honda nor have you given them a chance, if you believe that Hondas are the best bikes you ever rode and that Harley's are complete waste of time then it's probably more of the same thing.... When your riding and enjoying the ride whatever machine your on is a good machine. One other question why are you watching Harley videos If you dislike them so much?

In 2016 I upgraded from a 2004 Road King Classic to the CVO Street Glide. Had 2 dealerships fighting for my business and negotiated a sweet deal new for $30k. It’s still a ton of $, but I ride it and love taking care of it. I learned to turn my own wrench for basic maintenance, saving hundreds, and make time for polishing therapy with my riding buds. The first important mod I did was to install rear crash bars to protect the paint. Came in handy the day I tipped over. Have kept all my original parts as light mods were necessary: suspension, exhaust and running lights. Absolutely love this 110 beast. Won’t sell until it’s time for a trike! CVO or bust!

I had the first Ultra in 1989. It had a Two Tone paint, Silver/Black. Harley-Davidson only kept the Silver for the first 1000 models sold. They found the cost of the Silver Pearl Paint was higher than the entire Ultra Option. So offered with just Black with the same Red Pin Striping. The Silver on the Tour Pak was a decal.
Now, I had a plank fall on my tank in the garage, causing a large dent, in 1993. The Paint was no longer available. But I got lucky. My dealer found a painted tank in stock at another dealer. But, WOW, what a price!
    But kept it original.

The paint is nice, the chrome is nice, the extras are nice...but for me, it comes down to the satisfaction of knowing I have the perfect excuse to NOT need to change all those things out now. I can spend that money on my other bikes that need to stand out from the crowd...and that CVO stands out without any extra needed attention. Means I have more time to ride!

The fairing was destroyed and the tour-pack was missing. I've rebuilt the bike and it is now a unique Road King, using ebay and craigslist, as well as aftermarket parts. Painted in my shed - not the best; but, I don't worry about the finish, I just ride it. The best CVO is one you can pick-up at auction. Just like any Harley I’ve owned, I always put money into it. A year ago, some douchebag backed into one side of it, and knocked it completely over. CVO paint jobs are done by Gunslinger. Every painted part save my tank had to be replaced. All of the parts were replaced with a 100 percent matching paint job. Harley now does a better job at replacement.

It's only a headache if you haven't thought it out before you bought it. I started gathering parts the first year of ownership. Started with the immediate wear areas grips for hand & boot surface rubber on pegs. Got my second seat early in the process as well (I have had 3 all nos one still in box). A mirror failed from vibration at its base after 4-5 years, cost $200 (HD heavyweight dlr.) just to replace it (I was in a panic). Since had found original pair (nos) in box less than $100. Found better HD mirror's to match tribal graphics & more glass for visibility & safety (2 nos sets less than $300). 3 more sets of heat shields on muffler they are vulnerable (2 used 1nos still in box). Original brakes (SUCKED) would not stop bike, CVO member site all agreed dangerous. A member recommended racing brake pads (organic) that did not take the metal down as well. There is nearly 80k and the rear disc is still serviceable (front & rear nos disc's in box). 2007 FXSTSSE Amarillo Gold/Candy Tangerine 1/348 nationwide. Got this bike for my 60th birthday a few months early & had 8? miles on the clock delivered 2/28/07.......by the way, this bike still looks fairly new as told to me. It's stored in a heated facility for the winter here in Pennsylvania. A friend on line in Switzerland with the same bike in Blue cannot keep the chrome on it as it gets 40 below. Think about that for a minute.......The color group for this bike is $4k & the value with 80+ does not make sense. I will park it under a pool table in a sealed container (let your imagination flow) when the time is right for retirement.....then find another one with low mileage.................JDH

The shocks have been upgraded. And since the warranty was up, it got a non-Harley tune. Finally I dropped the bike twice so I got a new fairing fascia. We had to send in the VIN to corporate. Harley corporate then sent the dealer a new custom fascia painted up by Gunslinger's in Golden Colorado. The dealer had to send back the damaged fascia to corporate. In addition when I bought the bike I ordered a custom tour pack that was painted up by Gunslinger's. It looks great and perfectly matches the bike's paint scheme of red and black. I remember the dealership here in Australia had to get one ordered from the U.S and i waited 6 weeks for it. I guess lucky it was still a current model and maybe they had spares or the ability to get the appointed painters to make more.

And the front fender came from knock works. The previous owner added air ride front and rear from dirt air. And a center stand from SOB. 12" mini apes. Sony 7000 head unit with amp, speakers and dps. I wish he wouldn't of replaced the radio. I had to get it redone it was like a wiring rescue. Thus winter I got it ceramic coating on it. It's a very clean and rideable bike.

Last year, I paid off my 2021 Ultra Limited and then bought a Pan America. I had planned to try and pay that off too and then trade both bikes for a CVO. However, I had some trouble on my house and wound up needing some of the money I thought I was going to use for my bikes on fixing my house issues. I’m kind of glad all that came up because it caused me to stop and think about whether I really want a CVO or not. When it was all said and done I chose to upgrade to a 2022 Ultra Limited on the last day of 2022 (because I got a better deal) and I did some upgrades, like a Stage 3 (122). I believe I’ve made the right decision because I ride way too much to own a CVO. I ride about 23k miles per year. I can’t imagine the hit I would take in a year with that many miles on a CVO, not to mention all the potential scratches, etc…

I was amused by a comment I read a while back that said you could probably build a better Harley without using ANY Harley parts. I'm riding a 2008 Fat Bob. Pretty happy with it. Done a few upgrades. Viking bags, V&H Super Radius exhaust, Dyna touring seat, CVO tach, HD windscreen, HD oil cooler. I can't see spending a fortune on a new HD. Maybe an older bagger at some point for longer distances. But a CVO? No.

I'm all one for encouraging people to live their own life, to do "their own thing", to be "who they want to be". At least, I thought I was. $52k for a bike? Sorry, but I start to run into questions that pertain to a person's morality, at that point. It's a motorcycle. It's not a new tractor for the community farm, it's not a deposit on your kid's first home or payment for their college fees. It's just a motorcycle. It's not a used yacht or a Beechcraft Bonanza, it's a motorcycle.
No doubt, I'll cop some flak for this, but come on, surely you can see how I'm challenged by this. $52,000 for a motorcycle. Wow.

With a Harley, you are already paying for the highest quality paint (historically) with any US-built model. Don't bend over further to pay money that you will never see again, for a CVO. Any model HD will hit 105+ MPH regardless of price or cubic inches or bling.

Me Personally As a High end Detailer that specializes in Harley Davidson. People don't think to protect their investment BEFORE it gets messed up . No, Quality Detailing is not going to save you in a wreck. But ,If& or when you go to resell your detailed bike will hold its value better. I had a guy who bought a fully decked out CVO bagger & spent another $10,000.+ on accessories who freaked out when I told him if it was BRAND NEW a Wax job would be $300 & up .Ceramic coatings (NOT F~11) only work on paint & cost much, much more(cheaper in the long run). Typically what I get is a 10~ 20 year old bike that has not been loved on & then they want it done cheap, No such thing!! upwards of 60 to 100 hours of labor goes into restoring the Cosmetic Maintenance of your investment.

Interesting...i actually think the opposite. I have a 2014 CVO Deluxe which is not a common CVO. After about 6 years of ownership I got rear ended, went to the dealer and they told me they can get the rear fender but it may take up to two months. 3 weeks later they called me and told me they had the part, i was shocked to see it nicely wrapped in that white packing material. After the fender got replaced i thought one of the main reasons to own a CVO is if any of your tins get ruined its much easier to get the tins from the dealer (yeah that rear fender was about $900) then getting a new part and getting it custom painted (if you have a custom paint job). Also, last month i got hit by a rock which left a nice chip on my front fender, and i was able to get the touchup paint kit and included both colors (i had to get the clear seperate)
