She can't see properly when she is awake. When she dreams, she sees everything in full clear vision as if she was never blind at all. I cannot fathom how that must feel. It sounds so bittersweet.
Being Blind *≠* Being Socially anxious She may not be able to see but she's not socially anxious and her confident eye contact even thought she can't see, its natural human instinct.
I'm guessing she's directing her face/eyes toward the direction of the sound of his voice. (Edit) Okay, she said "still have some sensory..." during the "do you keep your eyes open or shut". So she's legally blind and not completely blind; even if completely blind they may prefer to look in their direction when talking as a courtesy/habit from the time she had her full sight.

Another one in terms of sight that made me realize how ungrateful I am, is when I watched a grown man cry when seeing real color for the first time using those special glasses for colorblind people.

Yeah would be better to invest into such stuff (alzheimer, AIDS, blindness, movement disabilities) than putting hundreds of billions into the military. Sadly the president is an idiot!
Probably if he could see he would be so shocked and unused to it that he would probably be even more handicaped trying to figure out how to live in the world with vision. I don't even know is his brain could be able to accept all of that at his age...
It's really weird to think that Tommy has NEVER seen anything, so he doesn't even have a concept of colour or sight, he literally can't see ANYTHING, no sighted person can imagine seeing nothing, because when you try that, you'll always just imagine grey or something, but Tommy doesn't know what grey is so he cant imagine it. Him trying to imagine sight is like us trying to imagine a new colour.
How does having a fascination make us little kids? Most people here are fascinated by Tommy, that's why they watch him, oh, and I'm 17 for your information.

It’s not that bad for me. I see in my dreams the way I visualize my surroundings in real life, (not very detailed and out of focus in some areas), then wake up without sight; what’s familiar to me. Every blind person views their experiences differently. You just have to accept the way things are at some point.
Minecraft Kid 67 I use Voiceover. I tap somewhere on my phone screen, my phone reads the words to me, and I double tap the app I want to open, the letter I want to type, etc. Molly Burke made a couple videos about how blind people use technology. I don’t know if Tommy has, but he is a blind man using UA-cam, so ya gotta assume he uses technology the same way as most blind folks.
If she's counting fingers she's able to see things up close to her face. It would only be trouble if she was light perception or no light perception she'd be unable to do anything requiring sight.
Because she had the experience of vision growing up. She learned body language and facial expressions. They are ‘normal’ to her, like talking with her hands and turning her head towards him. It also probably matters that she has some vision still. If you’ll notice he never turns his face towards her nor does he gesture much. Also his facial expressions are kind of blank....almost without nuance. Like a baby. That is because he grew up without vision at all. He never had a reason to learn these things. His body language and facial expressions are very much like how I remember my grandfather, who lost his sight as a baby. He used to turn his ear towards whoever he was speaking with, never his face. I hope that makes sense and answers your question.
@@-NRB- That is a stupid statement... She lost her vision at 20, which was 17 years ago which now makes her 37, I'm pretty sure there is a big difference. Edit: at the time of this video it was 17 years ago but now it is 20, which makes her 40.
Not being able to watch foreign films with subtitles is such a good point. There's this hot debate about subtitles where people disparage voiceover dubs, for inauthenticity or whatever. But people forget that dubs are accessibility tools. Beyond people being "too lazy" to read subtitles, not everyone is able to use subtitles, and they need an audio component instead.
Yeahhh. So at least they can understand what's going on. I know a couple of anime I watch that I enjoy better in it's original dub because of the music choice, makes it seem more serious at times when it should be and the English dub changes the tone - But the English/other language dubs really help for people to watch things and enjoy them when they can't read the subtitles.
She doesn't look like a blind person. She makes an eye contact, her whole body acts normally. I think I wouldn't have noticed anything unusual if she didn't say she's blind. Respect to both of them, wish them all the best.
heard a story from some people who have a friend who is similarly blind as her, they were drinking and this guy was talking with her for about half an hour when she got up to go to the bathroom and accidentally knocked something over on the ground. The guy she was talking to said: "how much has she had to drink?", he hadn't even noticed she was blind.
She's been able to see before and was probably raised thinking it was rude not to look at who is talking to you. Makes sense to me, if I could see shadows of people and hear where they were talking from, I'd do the same thing.
my brain utilizes all my senses all around my body in dreams when they are of an importance for the given moment, but i also have such a ridiculously high level of an imagination that allows me to simulate feelings, smells, sound+full vision so that's definitely different from person to person, regardless of any handicaps or such...
It's not stealing I think. In my opinion, it's like privilege. In my country (Indonesia), many public places like bus, toilets, etc, are free for "disabled" people. Although there's no rule that mentioned it to be free to them, they still can have it free. I don't know the other countries situations, so yeah CMIIW thx
If I were ANYONE I'd be into lucid dreaming. I mean you can literally talk to your subconscious, or a manifested form of it. It has seriously helped me throughout my life such as getting to speak with my passed father. The human brain is an amazing thing. I can't help but reply everytime I see someone mention lucid dreaming :D
How on earth can 500+ people give this video a negative review?? The joy and enthusiasm with which Christine and Tommy face life, despite the extra challenges and losses they incur, is inspiring and humbling. Incredible people with a perspective we can all learn from!
ok one main difference is tommy stares off into nothing while having a conversation... and she actually looks in the direction of the person she is talking to
"What's the thing you want to be able to do but you can't because of your blindness?" Christine: Driving, being independent Tommy: I really want to catch a ball
Not to choose sides but it is. I mean living your whole life with vision and then loosing it and onoy seeing darkness is really sad. Same for being born blind, but since you are blind from birth, you don't know what its like having vision so you grow adapt to not having sight. But when you go blind you have to relearn how to do alot of things. And most things you can't do.
Also, if you are born blind, you don't really know what you are missing out on, because you have nothing to compare blindness to. On the other hand, in the case losing your sight, you will always remember what it was like to see, and you will always miss it. It's like having something ripped away from you, as opposed to never having it at all.
@@kashinimeyo still sadly :( I am gonna try and strive to be a better person tho hope I change for the best thanks for asking about ne btw really appreciate the care :)
Also, as a filmmaker, you should ask yourself, if the dialogue is good enough to stand on its own. If you blindfolded someone and had them listen, would they understand the ideas, the story, the context of everything? Same for the other way. If you muted your film, and someone could only try to understand everything through the visuals alone, would they feel like they experienced a full movie, or would they be completely lost. If you were able to make something that fits both of those criteria, that might be a truly astoundingly told story, especially for those with both senses, as it might give a more rich and fulfilling experience than a story otherwise would.
@@JWPSmith21 Interesting point, even though there are movies where the dialoge is almost non-existant and they still are able to convey as much as movies with dialogue. A good example for me is 3-Iron, great movie and the main character does not say a word
I wonder how Tommy can even know what sight is like, or conceptualize it, never having it. It’s like telling me I have another sense, I just wouldn’t even know how to conceptualize it, you can’t really explain the sense
well. the comparison is irrelevant since the vision is the thing, a lot of people have it that can explain it at least poorly. if you had another sense and nobody else had that, that's a different thing.
I’d imagine that his understanding of sight is based on how he understands other senses. Since he is able to feel ( and therefor has a grasp of depth and form of objects/space ) i’m sure that he can’t understand the actual sensation of sight, but he can understand the fundamental purpose of sight which is to somehow render those forms in a manner other than touch alone. When you think about it the higher awareness that humans have of their surroundings even lacking vision is pretty incredible.
@Ahmed G. It's like when you touch a thing, and you know it's there, but you can do it at a distance. things like color might not be possible to explain though.
This dude has such an amazing jovial attitude; it almost makes me emotional, we complain about the most banal things but this dude is just so happy to have what he has.
the best way i can describe sight is, if every object in a room made a sound that only your eyes could hear. depth perception would be like hearing an item louder because its closer and quieter because its farther away.
In nature everything is just waves received and interpreted by our organs. Lights waves and translated into vision by our eyes, and sound waves are translated into sounds. Light waves are probably more informative since our eye can receive so many of them at the same time and they don't tangle. I wonder if some creature with super hearing can hear as we see.
I am partially sighted and roomed with a guy who only had light perception at the MD school for the Blind. He insisted on having the lights off all the time.
Tommy once talked about how friends would visit his place and turn the lights on only to forget to turn them off at the end of the visit. Poor guy got stuck with a huge electric bill.
"I'd like to try sight" was endearing to me, treating it like its a fun new experience. Gaining sight would be such a huge change of worldview! If Tommy ever gets the ability to see I'd love to hear his opinions on the world around him
Not everyone's blindness can be "cured" it's different for everyone's eyes and why they went blind/were born blind and I'm pretty sure with Tommy's condition surgery wouldn't making able to see
I am visually impaired. My eyesight is very similar to hers. I have optic nerve damage. However, I had sight 2020 vision for 35 years before losing it. I can relate to the dream statement. Sometimes I'll dream so vividly and I'll realize that I can see again in my dream and I'll look at my hands and see all the details and then realize while I'm dreaming that I am dreaming. Then I'll wake up very disappointed. But, I am always grateful that I can still dream very vividly and I am lucky enough to be one of those people that remembers their dreams every night.
@@d.j.wellington I am very glad you asked me this question. A lot of people are ignorant and don't realize accessibility features on phones have gone a long way. I have what you call speech to text. So I just tell my phone what I want to say and it puts it down in the comment section. No need to even look that my phone. Then, I listened back to how it sounds. Sometimes I have to delete every do the whole comment again if there is too many errors but usually it does just fine as I talk real slow and my phone picks up every word and quotation. Here is a little fact information for you. I will start by saying I was like you just over one year ago. I had never known a visually impaired person or blind person in my life. I only knew what I seen on TV. The real world though is not like you think. 90% of all blind people still have some sort of vision. Only 10% of the world's population is completely blind. In other words if you see somebody on the side of a road one day with a white cane sunglasses and is looking at a cell phone do not assume they are not blind. Chances are they're using what is called TalkBack and their screen is probably not even on. We as visually impaired or blind people like the somewhat feel normal so yes we still will staring the direction of our phones. Thanks for the awesome comment. I hope you got your answer that you wanted.
@@Jdb63 well I own an Android phone. The LG v20. If I hold down the home button Google will pop up and I can ask it to open any app I need. When it comes to navigating in apps I use TalkBack or select to speak. Both options in your accessibility settings. So when I'm on UA-cam I listen to the titles of the videos. If they sound intriguing I listen to them. If I have to search for a certain video I just use the little microphone button next to the search bar on UA-cam. And I just speak whatever video it is I want to watch. And if you're wondering how I find the little microphone button it's called muscle memory plus my vision allows me to still see certain colors and shapes through a filter of pixels and gray fog in my vision. So even though I can't see detail or faces I can make out certain areas on the screen of my phone. If you want to know more just click on my channel and I have videos talking about my visual impairment. Or you can just read the comments on my videos as they are all written by blind and visually impaired people. Thank you so much for being curious. Its so interesting how somebody who lost their vision later in life looks like their Not even blind. She still moves her eyes up when thinking, looking into the direktion where the sound is comming from. Using her hands to communicate while talking. Its so facinating.
I think it's reverse of why tommy doesn't open his eyes. If he's not used to using those muscles, then she's so acostumed to doing it that she doesn't even think about the fact that it's of no use anymore. Matter of fact, when was ever looking up while thinking a useful thing? It's just body language, and that's what she still remembers, not each gesture in particular.
@@usecodesocy-ytintheitemsho4327 If he was literally born again he would have to physically become a baby and come out of a woman's body. That is what literally means. At least before people started to use it wrong.
Sounds like a myth to me, lol. People who see frightening things usually see what they fear. If people heard about the shadow man before they started experiencing sleep paralysis, that could cause them to think they're "seeing" him. Idk though, just my thoughts. My mother never saw anything scary during hers, only beautiful things. My brother saw something terrifying once, but no shadow guy and I've suffered A LOT from very heavy and complex sleep paralysis (was part of a sleep study because of it) and while I've seen, hard and felt a lot of horrifying shit, I've never seen any shadow guy. Not saying that means it's not common for people to see, just saying that people in old times saw a mare during their sleep paralysis (hence the term "nightmare". The creature that people saw while being paralysed appeared to be riding their chest, causing their difficulty breathing while paralysed, which also inspired the Danish term "mareridt". To be mare-ridden). Then when aliens became a big hollywood deal, people starting seeing aliens during them and suddenly it's a shadow guy. Just seems like the fears change within cultures overtime and sleep paralysis hallucinations change accordingly. Almost all of my visual hallucinations have been real people. Family members and one time... Sarah Jessica Parker walking into my room, standing at the foot of my bed and just staring at me, expressionlessly... She's creepy.
Omg sleep paralysis is torture! But you don’t always ‘see’ the demon you just get a feeling that there’s something dark and evil in the room so I doubt being blind makes a difference :/
SomethingReallyStrange she actually has a video on how she cooks on her channel, and on the show she had someone to hand her things and describe the food to her

Not sure how in the heck this video popped up in my feed, but I’m very thankful I clicked on to it! You two have such wonderful spirits and it so refreshing to see your strength in your discussion about your experience of not having sight. I really learned a lot from you both. I have very bad eye sight in that my contact lense RX IS a -10.0 in one eye and a -9.50 in the other eye. I was so embarrassed to go to the eye doctor because every time I’d go, my eye sight would get worsE and my RX stronger. Because of your video, I’ve learned to be grateful that as bad as my eyes are, I’m grateful that I can use corrective lenses to see. Thank you for allowing us to have a glimpse into understanding and appreciating your world.

avalanche no not at all. Did u notice that she wants to drive (which is a luxury to a lot of people not only poor ones) And Tommy only wants to catch a ball (no luxury for a lot)
Rabi Moshe Hizskia Avner goldenberg Shekelstein Fair point, but maybe that’s because he’s a guy...if it was a dude who also lost their sight over time, they might feel the same way
Rabi Moshe Hizskia Avner goldenberg Shekelstein Since when driving becomes a luxury? Driving a car is one of the basic daily living activities in America where she was born. Going to school, work, market, DMV, hospital and more, are some examples. It's impossible to live in America without a car unless you're quite wealthy living in great cities like New York where superb public transit systems are located and an unfurnished one-bedroom apartment can cost you $7,000 a month. Also, she said, "For the sake of my husband, he doesn't have to drive me around any more." It showed her desire for personal independence. By contrast, catching a ball is not a basic daily living activity in America. It's simply one of leisure activities/hobbies when you have free time.
I don’t know... I gradually lost my vision over time, (I think I was completely blind by age seven), and I’m happy. I mean, there are definitely instances when I know it would be easier to have sight, but all in all I’m content with being blind. I like remembering colour and seeing in my dreams; I don’t wish I was born blind. I totally understand how someone who lost their sight later in life might feel differently though.
Massive respect to them for being so positive and upbeat despite of their impediments!! They are so happy over there meanwhile im watching this tearing up like crazy...
I am amazed at how positive and accepting you are of your condition. It makes me feel good to see you be this positive and kinda laughing at what you have
Jana, I'm sorry to hear that you lost your sight in such a way... I really hope that you've otherwise recovered from the stroke. I wonder if improvements in technology might one day allow you some measure of driving independence once more. ... and to answer those who are asking how Jana is able to type: Guys. I suspect you actually know this. I'm fully sighted and I typed this senstence pretty easily with my eyes closed just by touch0typing. The only errors I made were the spelling of sentence and hitting 0 instead of -. Not only that, but speech-to-text is a wonderful thing that almost everyone knows about it nowadays because of Okay Google, Siri, Alexa etc.
To answer the question regarding typing. Speach to text is a great help. I also have a small amount of my vision left. The stroke killed the left side of my optic nerve, which left me completely blind in my right field of vision in both eyes. I use a cane and sighted guide to get around as I am classified as legally blind. I really hope that one day automated cars will give me some of my freedom back. At the moment I'm thankful for family and friends who help me get around. I have several friends who are also legally blind. I think a lot of people would be very surprised at the things we are capable of doing.
That's a thing I've often noticed! While fully-sighted, I am disabled myself and I'm always astounded by how much people assume that we're less capable than we are (though I'm also guilty of that). Of course, there's nothing especially wrong with that, unless people take it into their hands to "help" a disabled person without asking first, without realising that it takes away agency. One of the benefits of having a less visible disability, I find, is that people tend to try to step in less, though sometimes it can be difficult actually convincing them when I do need some accommodation.
I loved the way he is so positive ... My dad is blind and I always feel like how must it feel to not know how your children look like ... How you look like... What color clothes are you wearing... Or any basic basic daily stuff that we don't even feel is such a great blessing to be able to see. I hope we find a cure and he gets to see us and the world once in his lifetime atleast.
How did you find out you were blind? I can't understand how someone could explain to a blind at birth person what it means to be blind since they've never known the difference.
“i don’t like being judgmental but everyone has a little bit of judgementalism in them that they can’t be helped” that made me feel better knowing that others have this too, once in a while😭

It’s not that bad for me. I see in my dreams the way I visualize my surroundings in real life, (not very detailed and out of focus in some areas), then wake up without sight; what’s familiar to me. Every blind person views their experiences differently. You just have to accept the way things are at some point.

How does she look like she isn’t blind when she’s talking. That is so cool to me
If she's counting fingers she's able to see things up close to her face. It would only be trouble if she was light perception or no light perception she'd be unable to do anything requiring sight.

@@captinafro2320 you didnt get it???

Yep ❤! Good point. The debate around it is only between people with full-sightedness.
Great point❤
Gotta learn the language
Stefan Pavlovic because she knows how it works
heard a story from some people who have a friend who is similarly blind as her, they were drinking and this guy was talking with her for about half an hour when she got up to go to the bathroom and accidentally knocked something over on the ground. The guy she was talking to said: "how much has she had to drink?", he hadn't even noticed she was blind.
Because she used to be able to see and she can hear what direction stuff is coming from, so she knows where eyes are and stuff like that 🙃
She can still perceive light and some colors. I'm sure she can see where his face is.
She's been able to see before and was probably raised thinking it was rude not to look at who is talking to you. Makes sense to me, if I could see shadows of people and hear where they were talking from, I'd do the same thing.
He can smell and feel during a dream!? I never thought about it but I can I only see and hear during a dream.

I think it's harder to get blind than being blind from the beginning
Luka I see where your coming from
Not to choose sides but it is.
Makes sence because you tell what you lost besides not knowing in the first place
Also, if you are born blind, you don't really know what you are missing out on, because you have nothing to compare blindness to. On the other hand, in the case losing your sight, you will always remember what it was like to see, and you will always miss it. It's like having something ripped away from you, as opposed to never having it at all.

Wow. A blind man, who loves movies. I'm a filmmaker, and that is NEXT LEVEL AWESOMENESS, I kid you not.
Wesley this is exactly what i wanted to comment oh my gosh
This why i very much want descriptive audio to be more of a standard
Imagine having your movie called bad by a blind person
@@JWPSmith21 Interesting point, even though there are movies where the dialoge is almost non-existant and they still are able to convey as much as movies with dialogue. A good example for me is 3-Iron, great movie and the main character does not say a word
I wonder how Tommy can even know what sight is like, or conceptualize it, never having it. It’s like telling me I have another sense, I just wouldn’t even know how to conceptualize it, you can’t really explain the sense
it is as much understandable as much, as it is not understandable
well. the comparison is irrelevant since the vision is the thing, a lot of people have it that can explain it at least poorly. if you had another sense and nobody else had that, that's a different thing.

T Rosebud That's such a good comparison, whoa.
Wow... never thought about it that way. Honestly, great comment!
You just Morpheused the shit out of me.

One perk of being blind is not seeing the sleep paralysis demon
What is that
@@maxfrickmann It's one of the worst demons ever
Even if you can't see him, you know he's there
Sounds like a myth to me, lol.

*Whip out that cane* 😫
@@Str1ek0 sorry but no

"I hear 3-D and I panic instantly. I'm like - ooooh this can't be good."
As a sighted person I fully agree.
Jackfirecracker I love 3D movies.
The catching a ball bit is so precious. Just a mundane thing for the rest of us. I’m gonna be extra grateful the next time I do and think about how privileged I am to do it whenever.
I lost most of my vision at the age of five. I am 32 now. Or use a cane and read braille. Just discovered your channel. Very interesting. I live in Denver and Emma standup comedian. You've got some good stuff here. Glad that I found out about you and your channel.
Wow a standup comedian!! Keep up the good work David.
David Glasspool where in Denver? I live there and love comedy!
McKayla Dill there are tons of open mics and shows all around the city. I have played at Comedy Works, the voodoo comedy Playhouse, several other open mics and shows around town. I don't have any shows booked for the next couple of weeks so I'm mostly just practicing at open mics. If you check out 5280comedy.com you should be able to find a list of shows and open mics. We definitely need more audience members for sure. You can also add me on Facebook if you would like. I advertise which shows I'm doing pretty regularly. Denver has a lot of great Comedy shows. If you see me at one, come say hello.
Bless you
WHO else thinks he should get surgery to get his sight .....We us fans can donate money for it i would love to see his reaction who else hes missing so much in life?..
Oh shit, was this the girl that Gordon told her how good her pie was while she was crying? I remember that.
Jack Scott yea man, it was
She won the whole competition bro!
Omg I started crying, with the part where Tommy talks about his desires. I feel so bad, like it's so simple and he just wishes he could do something that we don't really take notice to doing and I don't know how to explain how I feel but omg 😭
It’s amazing the things we take for granted. I find their attitudes very refreshing, uplifting, and just plain pleasant.
I love how Tommy always seems so happy and in a good mood. I love the smile he has in every video. Don't ever quit youtube! You cheer me up and I have learned a couple of things that maybe I would have never thought about or that I was asking myself and couldn't get an answer.
The algorithm got me here. Every blue moon I click on a Gordon Ramsey video, and fortunately these clicks lead me to something positive like Christine Ha.
The way Tommy speaks makes me want to enjoy everything while I'm still alive🙏
This video was very helpful and informative. My goldfish is permanently partially deaf and blind from a freak accident this past January. So he's been through a lot! He's doing much better now! But he still has his days. Tommy and Christine, you are a wonderful inspiration!
This makes me appreciate my vision even more
Same,i have terrible vision but i can at least fix it with glasses or contacts, they're just permanently done for.
Same.
im going to be blind soon and i said my self that I'm going to suicide if I'm going to blind
It's more sad to become blind than being born like that.
avalanche no not at all. Did u notice that she wants to drive (which is a luxury to a lot of people not only poor ones)
And Tommy only wants to catch a ball (no luxury for a lot)
Rabi Moshe Hizskia Avner goldenberg Shekelstein
Fair point, but maybe that’s because he’s a guy...if it was a dude who also lost their sight over time, they might feel the same way
Its a lot easier if you were able to see, because you can understand everything people want to describe to you.

I lost my vision due to a stroke when I was 26. I definitely miss driving!
How can you type?
@@janamartin4048 sorry m8

his desire is so simple yet meaningful
God bless this Man❤️❤️
I loved the way he is so positive ...
You can tell how much of our language is body language and vision in the differences between their communications.
Tommy, have you ever been on a rollercoaster? If yes, how did it feel? If no, do you think you would?
【Leia】he made a video of himself on a roller coaster
Clayton Hull oh thanks! I'll go find that
【Leia】 Mithrandir was actually just thinking about this question
【Leia】 Mithrandir dude he cant replay probebly not great at typing and his blind
Lol wtf I was just about to ask this
How did you find out you were blind? I can't understand how someone could explain to a blind at birth person what it means to be blind since they've never known the difference.
ikr wtf
He has a video about this
Amani Hrabowy I don't think he can read your question 😂😂
vearing islife oh he can!

The Tommy Edison Experience loved it!
When I watch your videos, it really motivates me to become a scientist or something like that. Just so that I can find a way to give you sight. Because you really deserve it!
This might be too personal of a question so i apologize in advance. How is sex as blind?
I want to see you play some of the switch games. They seem to be playable only using sound cues.
Wiromax3 I am blind as well. For me, I don't know if I could effectively answer that question. I don't really know what it is like as a person who can see. I lost most of my vision at the age of five. I have been with both sided women and blind women. Honestly it is the same either way. Sorry, did not mean to but in. Ha ha.
Wow so much respect for her. I would become so depressed if I started going blind :(
Tommy when you talked about wanting to just reach out and catch a ball and how quick people can work on a computer I got emotional with a great sense of gratitude for life. You're inspirational and I love your attitude.
I like her personality. She seems like someone cool and funny just to talk to.
And I also feel for her with the driving. I also LOVE to drive and it’s my me time. So many people I know hate driving and I just don’t know how.
