    This is the first rag quilt tutorial I've seen that doesn't use wadding in the middle. What a good idea to use fabric - it means you can use (get rid of) something you don't like any more :)

    The magic happens after you wash and dry a few times. Very important tip!!!!! Please wash and dry quilt at a local laundromat!!!! The shedding cut threads will be numerous and all of those threads will come off your quilt while washing. You do not want all of those loose threads to get stuck in your washer. Very nice how to video.

    • @Fg4e
      @Fg4e Рік тому

      If you are making a baby quilt or runner you can do it at home. Just pop it into a mesh garment bag. This catches all the threads:) You can also do it the old fashioned way, hand wash and dry on a line on a breezy day :) It's work but it saves money and it smells amazing when you bring it in!

    Amanda, thank you! I just finished my 2nd rag quilt. I’ve been doing my intersections differently and it caused a problem. Many people said to fold one side to the left and the back side to the right. When I clipped, my intersections looked like balls. I had to trim them. I’m not sure if it’s because I did 1 inch seams or what. Next time, I’ll do the intersections your way. Thank you!

    I made two Rag Quilts following your fabulous tutorial, one for my baby grandson and the other for my niece's 1st birthday, after cutting the fabric they came together very quickly, they are both a hit with the parents, I cut 6 1/2 inch squares which is the width of my quilting rule and that made it so easy as well. I prefer your way of having 3 layers of flannel rather than the wadding in the middle, it actually makes the quilt softer and fluffier, not much difference in the thickness either. I made one with wadding a few years ago for my daughter. I posted some photos on your web site for readers projects. Thanks for a fantastic tutorial. 💖

    This is one of the clearest tutorials on these super cute quilts! Thanks so very much for your time and help 🙏☺️ Could I ask please, the middle piece, does it have to be flannel or batting, or could it be just a normal quilting/cotton piece - that’s not flannel? Really hope to hear as I’m about to do one of these for a new little member to the family! 🥰👶 Can’t wait to try! So grateful to you, and you now have a new subscriber due to this snuggly bundle & your lovely teaching style😃👍 Oh yes, one other thing please! Would you put washing powder in the machine 1st time round, & how many times did you wash/tumble it initially? Thanks for all! Every good wish to you from the UK🙏☺️🧵🪡

    • @alandacraft
      @alandacraft  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for your lovely comment. I haven't used quilting cotton as the middle layer but from what I've read, it is quite okay to use it. I don't put washing powder in the machine first time round. I only wash and tumble dry the quilt once when it is finished. Be aware there will be a lot of lint in the dryer. You can do it a second time if the quilt doesn't quite have the rag effect you want. Here is a link to the step-by-step written instructions that may also help you www.alandacraft.com/2016/02/27/easiest-ever-rag-quilt-tutorial/. • @alandacraft

      We haven't personally tried it but it should work. You want it to be able to fray so you get that nice fluffy fringe effect. And we don't wash our fabrics before cutting but that's just a personal preference.

    • @alandacraft

      That's just to ensure the layers stay together, to stop it from bunching up and separating.

    • @alandacraft
      @alandacraft  6 років тому +1

      I personally don't pre wash my fabric. If I have doubts about colour run then I will test a piece of the fabric first, there's nothing worse than finishing a lovely quilt to find the reds have run into the whites. The same applies if I think the fabric may shrink. Most fabric is pretty good these days. But it's really a matter of personal choice Mariette. Some people like to pre-wash all their fabrics, I don’t bother.

      Thank you for your lovely comment Kathy. We use a standard 90/14 needle and we also us a walking foot. Using a walking foot when sewing your quilt together will help with the bunching. Also take your time and smooth out the layers a you sew. Practice makes perfect (or near enough). 🙂

    If you use batting in the middle would you say it should be the same size as the squares or should I make them smaller? I love batting in a quilt. • @alandacraft
      @alandacraft  7 років тому +1

      Thank you for your lovely comment Jeanene. You need to make the batting layer the same size as the square. Unlike when you are making a regular quilt and you trim the batting to reduce the bulk, for a rag quilt you want that batting to show as the middle layer when you rag the quilt.

    • @ceahorse56

      @alandacraft  5 років тому +1

      The reason we use flannel is because it frays nicely to give the rag effect. I haven't ever made one of these using cotton but as far as I am aware it can be used. I have seen where others have used cotton. Denim works well for rag quilts.

      You might want to try our Easiest Quilt Ever. That doesn't require a binding and you could still make it with the flannel fabric. Here's the link: www.alandacraft.com/2015/06/08/quilting-for-beginners-the-easiest-quilt-ever/

    What size are the squares you use please? I would love to make one of these quilts, but I'm not keen on using tiny squares.

    • @alandacraft
      @alandacraft  7 років тому

      We used 10" squares.

    Can you use fleece for the middle?

    • @alandacraft
      @alandacraft  9 місяців тому

      Yes you can certainly use fleece for the middle. Just keep in mind that fleece doesn't rag as well as other fabrics that are generally used in rag quilts, such as flannel.

    So the squares you are using, did you pre sew those together? I see diagnol line

    • @alandacraft
      @alandacraft  2 роки тому

      Yes Kimberly, the diagonal lines are sewn before the quilt is pieced together. I do believe this is mentioned in the video.

    Ladies, would this be a baby q size or big enough for a lap quilt for a small woman?

    • @alandacraft
      @alandacraft  Рік тому

      The quilt measures approx. 44" x 52.5", Vicky. So it can be used for a crib or a as a lap quilt. You can make it bigger or smaller by adding or reducing the number of squares

    How do you keep the colors so bright, mine have faded badly after the wash and dry.

      Sorry Lisa, I notice that my response to you didn't save, I do apologise. I wash the quilt in cold water without any detergent. The quilt hasn't had any use so it's not like it's grubby and needs thorough washing. At this stage we just want to fluff up the rag quilting.
