    A tutorial on how to make a Rag Quilt

    Hi there, it's Monica with It's Just Sewing and today I'm gonna teach you how to make the easiest quilt on the planet and it's not even a quilt. It's easy, fun and fuss free. So we've got our quilting cotton and our flannel and what I want to start by doing is preparing our fabric to feed right through the sewing machine because I'm going to show you the coolest trick to make your sewing experience so much quicker, so much more efficient and I'm actually gonna save you money on thread - so wait for that. The first thing we're going to do is start by collating. The objective for our rag quilt is we'll eventually sew from one corner to the other and then this corner to this corner. In order to be more efficient we will focus on just doing this corner to this corner with all of them first, and I'm gonna show you how to do that with using little to no excess thread. I'm going to go ahead and pop in my corner and start sewing corner to corner, just like that. No as I get to the end of this square, what I'm gonna do is grab another one and hug it up right behind the previous one that was sewn. Remember, I'm not overlapping them, what I'm doing is just hugging them right up next to each other and they're feeding through with just a small amount of thread in between. So now that you've done your chain stitching on one side, what you're going to find is that you will have a chained piece of square - which is fabulous. There's just a little bit of thread connecting each one, so you can do a couple of different things. Your just going to pop the next ones in and sew corner to corner that hasn't been sewn yet. We're gonna start fringing and basically what we want to do is snip all the way around the perimeter of each of the squares. Once you've laid everything out, just see if it feels balanced to you. The final thing is I would get out your cellphone; I would take a picture before you start organizing it so you have a reference point so if you need to go back to it as you're assembling. I have my first set of squares ready to assemble my first row and what you're gonna do is take the first, top square and if you ever have a hard time remembering which one is the top you can always put a pin in it, so it reminds you. We are going to put it next to our second square and notice that I have the flannels touching. I would suggest that you use a one inch seam allowance. I think it gives you a huge margin of error. Here we go - we're gonna go ahead and sew all the way down. It's time to assemble row to row. I've got my first row and I want to get it ready to assemble with my second row. Now we're doing a baby quilt right now, so it looks a little smaller. But you can double the size and make it as large as you want. This is the first row and this is the first square, the upper left-hand square and the one it's going to butt up next to is going to be the red one that goes right underneath. I'm going to split the difference, so I'm gonna start in the middle. I'm ready to sew row to row and I have got my center point. What I like to do is line these up - we're gonna use the exact same seam allowance of one inch. I start actually in the middle. What we're gonna do is go ahead and start in the middle. I'm gonna give it a few stitches and I am gonna back stitch at this point - only because I'm starting in the middle. When I get to the area where I'm going over multiple layers, I just slow down. Look at what we have - two rows sewn together. See how the fringe looks clipped; it doesn't look really sweet and fluffy yet. That is because we haven't washed or dried it yet. When you wash and dry - that is where the magic really happens. A couple of things you want to do before you pop it into the washer is you want to take your scissors and cut any excess threads. I've already done this, but you'll find threads all throughout and you want to cut those down so they are good to go after you have washed and dried. You want to sew around the entire perimeter of the quilt because that's going to lock in all of the stitches, so they're not gonna go anywhere from when we did our rows to rows. This lady’s headed to the washer and drier now. I can't wait for her to get all beautiful and give you the big reveal. I can't believe this - we are done with our rag quilt. That's really the appeal of the rag quilt. I promised you this would be the easiest quilt on the planet. Follow us at it'sjustsewing.com for more fun tutorials.

    I LOVE this method of making a rag quilt! Cutting the fringe BEFORE sewing the seams of the blocks is one great idea! Trying to snip all the edges after sewing the seams would've made it more difficult and tedious to not cut in the seam due to handling the whole quilt while doing it. Your way makes it much easier for those of us with carpel tunnel syndrome in the wrists. And, a person can snip one or two blocks at a time (say at TV commercials?) instead of handling the whole quilt and wondering where you left off on the snipping. I could even see doing a quilt with cotton batting in the middle of the backing and quilt top blocks, by cutting the batting squares smaller than the top and bottom cotton fabrics. All in all, this could make the fastest baby quilt for a last minute gift or a nice sized throw for an adult. Sometimes batting is just too warm for a casual throw used for reading or watching TV. I recently bought (another!) quilt tool I didn't need (a "cutting gizzmo") to use for cutting up chained-pieced blocks. Now I see from this video how I could've save myself $13 plus s/h just by using the thread cutting on the side of my sewing machine. Thanks so much for making this tutorial. I have plenty of cotton fabric, but now I want to shop for some flannel - you SO inspired me!

    I’ve made about 15 rags quilts of all sizes and shapes. The best technique and easiest on your washer is to dry 1st, wash and dry. This 3-step method is way easier on your washing machine. (Use old, clean tennis shoes or tennis balls in the dryer.) PS I had a friend who ruined her washing machine because of rag quilts. There were too many threads on the loose, ha.

    I want to make my daughter a king size rag quilt but I wanted to put two layers of cotton like a regular quilt but put batting in the middle cutting it smaller of course I believe the only difference would be the ragging the way it looks because it don't fray like flannel does. Do you have an example of this kind of rag quilt?

    • @lesleygilbert1945
      @lesleygilbert1945 8 років тому +1

      +Jessica Helms - I think the first and last cut on each block meet and so the corners get cut off in the process :)

    • @Westseattlefabriccompany
      @Westseattlefabriccompany  8 років тому +1

      +Jessica Helms - Hi Jessica, yes Lesley's response is correct. When you fringe one side and it meets up with the perpendicular side there is a natural notch that is created and it looks like a square is cut out. Sorry for the delayed response - so many ways to communicate in 2016! Thanks for watching our tutorial!

    It looks great!! I'm a total novice, only had my sewing machine a month but would love to try something like this, however, you didn't say the size of your blocks, are they fat quarters or to your own sizing?

    • @Westseattlefabriccompany
      @Westseattlefabriccompany  8 років тому +2

      At the very beginning of the video I show the measurements but I could see how it may have not been seen. I'm sorry! The size of the squares that I use are 8"x8" which I would recommend ordering 1/2 yard cuts of several different prints instead of fat quarters. You can get 5 squares per 8" of fabric so it's much more cost effective than using fat quarters. Hope that helps! BTW, Rag Quilts are going to be your gateway to confidence in sewing. Please share your projects with us on our private facebook group. :) Good Luck!

      Okay I finished my rag quilt. But found it was easier to sew the sides and then clip. I didn't get it clipped all the way. But my son doesn't care. He was happy with his Christmas 2018 present.

    When you said to sew around entire perimeter of the quilt do you mean around outside border? Thanks in advance

    I attempted a rag quilt but found the thickness hard to work with. I should mention that I used a 90/14 needle, cotton thread, regular tension and my squares were 5" square. My needle eventually broke because of the thickness. Can you recommended a different tension setting or needle size that my help?

    Help !!! Wanting to make this Rag quilt.
    So this is for my soon to be grandson 😊. My question is each square is 8x8” ! Yes.also how much fabric do I need for the backing? Next when you’re sewing do you open up the seams as you’re sewing? Do you cut the backing & the fabric together when you’re doing the small cuts making the fringe? I watched your video but you didn’t go into enough detail for me I’m sorry to be a pest. Jane McRoberts

    What is a good source for pretty and colorful Lancelot? I have checked msqc and Fabric worm and wasn't fond of the colors for a little boy.

      First calculate the size you need. (We'll say queen size - 88 inches square.) Then decide what size squares you're going to use, and count how many squares will be in your determined size. (We'll say 8 inches. That will give us 11 squares across and 11 squares down.) Add 2 inches to your squares (your finished squares will be 8 inches, so you need to cut 10 inch squares). This gives you a one inch "seam allowance" all the way around, half of which will be fringe. Then multiply 10 inches by 11= 110, multiply again times 2 = 220, and then divide by 36 (a yard), and you get 6.11 yards. But be generous and get 6 and a half of both top and backing to allow for shrinkage. If you want more than one fabric for the top you'll need to divide the 6.5 by however many different fabrics you're going to use. Hope this helps!
