How to Make a Rag Quilt Using a Fabric Panel and Coordinating Fabric
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 сер 2024
- I decided to make a rag quilt using a fabric panel because I love using fabric panels and rag quilts are easy to finish. No worrying about adding the binding at the end - when you have the quilt sewn - you are done. There are so many beautiful fabric panels out there, I can't help but get excited about using them. They make wonderful gifts and you can surround them with pieced quilt blocks or you can put borders around them or you can rag quilt blocks around them for a fun look. Check out my video on how I used a fabric panel, coordinating fabric pieces and cotton batting to make a fun easy quilt.

Beautiful quilt, thank you
You’re welcome 😊
Looks so comfy
very comfy!
I got a panel today and came here for ideas for ragging it. I love how you think on the fly, my kinda rag quilting! Traditional quilting is not in my wheelhouse, maybe someday. I am going to hand tie the panel section as I can't do more than a (kinda) straight line quilting pattern. April rocks!
Nancy you are a kindred soul. Traditional and I aren’t on the same wave length. LOL. Thank you for watching.

High loft batting will give you more puffiness

Well this inspired me, so I'm going to put a rag quilt on my "to do" list for next year! The chenille is new to me, I like it.

I love making rag quilts but I never thought of making one with a panel! What a great idea!!!
Thanks for watching .. now you'll have to give it a try too!

Absolutely stunning, you did a great job choosing the colors in the blocks to blend in with the panel! I so love this! I so enjoy seeing your "quilting helpers". :-)
Thank you!
I appreciate your kind words and thanks for watching!

That is so pretty. I’m working on a rag quilt for my great nephew based on your first tutorial. Thanks for showing us how to do these rag quilts. I love them.

Very nice ❤
Thanks 🤗
April, you always give us great ideas and tips to work with Panels. 😻
I LOVE PANELS ... they make everything so pretty!
thanks for watching
April
I watched the Halloween rag quilt video and now saw this as well as the Christmas quilt! Absolutely beautiful! I just might be able to handle something like this but…one quilt at a time! 😃. LOVE your tutorials! God bless you….and Mr. Kitty!
You can do anything you put your mind to. :-). Thank you for your sweet comments and God Bless you and yours.
April
I liked this technique on this panel.
This rag quilt was soooo fun! .. Thank you for your kind words! Thank you so much for watching!
April
Love the way you present quilt making process and the different shirts you wear.😊
One idea you may want to use in a presentation is making a quilt using fabric book panels. Each book age could be made into a block. Would be used far more than a cloth book for the baby.
Thanks for the tip! That is a great idea!
April
I loved this and attempted to make my first rag quilt! I had such a hard time with the planning stage. A class on that would be extremely helpful. Hint, hint… If I can figure out how, I’ll add a picture of my rag quilt 😊
I’ll add it to my suggestion sheet
Thank you
Yes! Picking fabric is not my strong point.
I am in a fb rag quilt group, I get lots of inspiration there.
😅😅very nice!!!!😅X's are good.
quilting?
Oh this beautiful. Would make a great fall quilt. Great idea ♡♡
Thank you - I agree. That is one of my favorite panels. 😁
April
That is a great way to make a rag quilt. Very clever, and so pretty for the fall. I am expecting my Q Zone Frame any day now, and I am going to use a Halloween panel to practice on. I love the idea of using the Chenille It
I can't wait for you to get your qzone hoop frame. I am a panel kind of gal and will use any opportunity to use one in a quilt. And I am not fond of binding so the Chenille - it is a great alternative. Thank you for watching.
April
Love this!!!! Very informative
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching.
Love this quilt!
Thank you so much!
April
Great job once again. Can you give us an idea of just how long it takes from start to finish? Obviously it takes you longer because of videoing, but those of us who don't work as fast as you could get an idea of the time frame. Thanks!
Using a panel cuts down the time because it is a large piece. I would say this quilt could be made in 8 - 10 hours if that is all you did and move at a moderate pace. Thank you for watching and commenting. :-). The worst part of this project is snipping the fabric to make it raggy.
April
Te felicito!! quedó bellísimo 😍😍👍👍
Thank you 😊 April
Hi, could you make a 6 pane window pane quilt using a panel? Please show us how?
I will add it to my list ... Thanks for the suggestion
Thank you❣️
Thank you for watching.
April
Wow amazing !

Thank you so much! :-)
April

Thank you.
April
That is awesome love ❤️ it.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
April
Love it 🥰
Thank you! 🤗
April what did you use for the back panel on the rag quilt?? behind the truck??
I used a piece of fabric the same size as the panel and it was woodgrain. The same that I used on the sides of the panel.
April
Hello! This is the first time I see your videos and I was in awe of how beautiful your quilt came out! I am not a quilter (wish I were) but you have inspired me to try this soon with all the panels I have! I know I've heard of the "Chenille It" before but would you please explain to me what it is? I couldn't see it very well in the video ! Great tutorial. 🤗 Thank you
Thank you so much!
it is like a strip of CHENILLE IT that you sew on ...it looks normal when you are sewing it on ... but after you wash it .. it loosens up and becomes really soft and fuzzy ... I will try to do another video using it soon and zoom in on it the before washing / after washing .. it is so awesome to use!
Thanks for your comment
April
@@aprilscraftroom Thank you for your quick response! Oh yes...I remember now. I will be watching😊
Love this. Where do you buy your panel fabric?
Anywhere I find them
Mostly little quilt shops that I find as I travel

Hello, Did you happen to record everything you did in the beginning? Such as squaring the panel, adding the batting, cutting fabric for back of panel, trimming the panel. As you can tell, I’m a beginner so I’m looking for all of the previous steps.
I didn't, but you can watch this tutorial to see how I created the squares using the batting. ua-cam.com/video/s2Y-DdtFAso/v-deo.html. The panel is made in the same way - batting cut about a 1/2" small than your panel and the backing. You can quilt it any way you want. Hope this helps. If you have more questions, please feel free to ask and I will try to help as much as possible. :-)

Stipple in space bordering on objects - they will pop up
Thanks for sharing
April
Are you just using your sewing machine to do the quiling?
Sorry it took me a bit to answer - I had to watch it- LOL. That is a Bernina Q16 which is a sit down long arm machine. I love it. The only thing I would change is I want more table from the front of the needle to where I am sitting. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😁
April
I love what you did, I’m going to do this to several panels I already have. I love you scissors, can I ask what kind they are? They seemed like they were easy to use (maybe springs)?
I love the scissors too. The ones I am using are spring loaded by We R Memory Keepers - Crafter's Essentials spring loaded and they are at Joann's. Tonic also made a version call Kushgrip and they are purple, but I don't know if you can still find them. Thank you for watching.
April
@@aprilscraftroom thank you, I’m going to go find some now.
Are you using cotton material?
Yes I am. Thank you for watching.
April
That is awesome do you have a pattern on the site?
I don’t. I just played it by ear. :-). And thank you for watching.
April
Where do you get chenille?
I found it at Hobby Lobby, JoAnns and at my local quilt shops. JoAnns doesn't have Chenille-it, but I think they have the Dritz brand that is the same thing. Thank you for watching.
April
Where can l purchase your books?
I don't have any books - maybe I should write some. :-). I have tutorials for 3 yard quilts and those books are written by Donna Richardson and you can get those at fabriccafe.com. Thank you for watching and supporting my channel.
April
A lot of work but I like it
It really is a lot of work. The best part is when you're done sewing - it's done - no making a quilt sandwich and long arming it. :-). Thank you for watching.
April
That is awesome love ❤️ it.
Thank you. :-)
