I really appreciate that you always say if exercises you're demonstrating are challenging you personally or created soreness. Really helps me to understand what intensity I'm aiming for 💪🏻 ✨

I’ve tried these over an extended period of time and found that no matter how I controlled my breathing to relax my muscles, they were still tense both in the upright and horizontal positions. Even after applied heating pad.

I agree that those techniques are good for relaxing a cramping muscle in that area. But would it not be better long term to stengthen the painful muscles? I found it to be very hard to archive however. I think what might be missing is lateral flexion and/or rotation of the thoracic spine. Especially when I rotate my spine and then flex it laterally after already having a lot of pain in my middle back, I can instantly feel the exact muscles causing me pain stretching. So I assume training the same motions would cause them to get stronger, but I am not sure how to do that in a save manner. Do you have exercises for that?

You are right. Exercise and movement is more effective. But we need to get out of the pain phase first. Which massage is good for.
There is a movement massage in this video to slowly guide you back into exercise.

Perhaps those muscles are guarding some misalignment in the upper thoracic/lower cervical spine. All the nerves to those muscles have to run through openings in the bones & spaces between them in the spine. Also C-1 and upper cervical joints will cause problems like headaches or migraines when the bone is out of alignment.
