I am so glad you did an episode on this, because throughout two playthroughs, I could not figure out what the heck was going on with the Hot Zone Crisis.
I had the same issue! I think the problem was that I couldn’t figure out why there would be a memorial to these people so I kept thinking I was missing something. The way it’s explained in this video clarifies the escalation and mistakes on the government’s part.
There is something addictive and beautifully tragic about finding the surviving fragments of these tragic ghosts of Aloy's past and our future as we explore the world of Horizon, and yet there is also something so satisfying, haunting and fulfilling hearing you lay it all out from end to end with so much depth and that twinge of sadness. Thank you RSQ!
Man, the lore in this game is so deep that Guerrilla can go in so many ways with this franchise! I'd honestly love a TV show that documents the events of the last few years of humanity. (The Faro plague, Enduring Victory, Zero Dawn, and the inevitable extinction of life)
a Shame this version of a more advanced P-GA Humankind had no long-lasted GA for them. and a miniature Collapse. by a very Familiar Shortsightedness of that kind of global Mistake. as it is repeated by their/our off-Earth 'neighbors' out there, heh.
I'm not sure if you've heard the news, but they are planning on doing a Horizon show for TV. Whether it's live, animated, or CGI is still unknown, but it's coming! 😎
Excited but hesitant about the Netflix show. So much potential for it to be good if it expands on the lore instead of just trying to rehash the story of zero dawn again.
Considering the continued involvement of humans (even/especially setting aside the Zeniths), Damned fitting that you would list the Faro Plague _and_ an extinction of life... Say what you (and I) will about Faro, but a functional biosphere has more time if the humans are starting at square one than if you've got basically one or more Quen in a world where humans just hit "resume"...
Everything except the "snoring 20s" they're pretty spot on for our future. Most obviously being how our technological progression is only a few years away from being almost completely dedicated to climate crises, due mostly to the fact that there are about to be a lot less habitable places in the world. And just like they predicted, and I fully agree, it won't start until a whole lot of people have to die first. The concept of the hot zone crisis is incredible, and I could see that being the second Civil War. Whoever the doomsday-ists are on the team, I hope they're in therapy lol.
@@shawnbergmann2638 Eh, a lot of what happened after the claw-back, especially the Faro Plague, probably wouldn't happen (corporations ranking in trillions and having a stranglehold on world governments is likely though). But the theme of the game, the world being destroyed after it was saved, all because of the refusal to adopt socio-economic change, that is something that not only could happen but has happened to less disastrous degrees throughout history.

Thank you, I wasn't able to find these datapoints so it's good to see the full story. Please do this for more of the pre-war stories, like the actions of those destroyers off the coast of San Francisco.
I LOVE how much John Gonzalez, Ben McCaw, et al, have looked at the way things have gone, and, are going - and how our technological progress could well seal our fate if we don't keep a check on what we do , and how.

Awesome video! I love these lore vids! Do you think you could do one talking about the Fate of Ted Faro? And HOW he exactly became the living tumor? Kinda like a final "go to hell for all you've done" Ted Faro is such an interesting and great villain. He always talks like hes the good guy, but he's just so TWISTED
The reactor wouldn't have increased mutations. It was a geo thermal power plant. No radioactive material involved. The game clearly states that his cells had stopped aging but they where continuing to mutate, the only thing holding them back from becoming cancerous was having the Dr perform treatments. No Dr means no treatments and no treatments means cancerous growth. The only thing the power was doing was keeping him alive somehow. It was not contributing to his cells mutation rates...
Something that I don't see discussed enough about this game. Did the US Government nuke their own people to put down a conflict of executive overreach?
That's a good question Doc. From what the lore tells us at present, the nuclear explosion was not intentional, rather a byproduct of the battle of the Mojave.

I'm surprised it took that long for a robot power core to crack leading to a nuclear explosion if that is what they have been powered on. Like how do you store that much nuke in one robot and how did none of the other robots in the zone experience a chain reaction when hit by a nuclear blast, which would have cracked their core as well, igniting their own energy storage? The only thing that can explain this was that this combat drone was not a normal sized one, but rather a titan class, not from Faro obviously. It would explain why the blast was so huge, and how Faro can sell the idea of DISINTEGRATING BIOMASS as the fuel for his drone. In real life what is going to kill most folks directly in terms of climate crisis is wet bulb heat events. At some point the heavy AC use in a major city in the world will cause a power outage during a heat wave and when the heat and humidity reach a certain point it will kill most of the people in the city.
