This is their first appearance on Austin City Limits together under the name "The Flatlanders," but of course each of them has appeared separately, and with each other as special guests, many times over the years. What began back in Lubbock, Texas in 1970, has come back to life in a new century but with every bit of the freshness and creative edginess that made their sound so unique three decades ago. Featuring legendary Texas artists Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, this stellar performance captures The Flatlanders at their creative peak.

One night at a small dance hall in Northampton, MA, we were all sitting at these little tables which everyone proceeded to move to the side of the room so the entire audience could dance--it was Joe Ely's band on stage - one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Flatlanders were a welcome progression - top of the list for takin' life with a dose of humor & for danceabilly!!!!

Maybe I've lived in Austin too long, I absolutely hate country music but I love the Flatlanders.

The Flatlanders have been called more legend than band, the country Beatles, genius, amazing, and a whole list of superlatives. You can't say anything bad about them, they're all good.

Much like your comment. It's called audience interaction and they don't seem to mind.

I've been closer to bluegrass than country, and I have to ask why they're all playing a guitar. The bluegrass musicians I know would pick the best player for guitar, then the other members of the band would pick up another instrument. I guess they're more flexible that way.
