Robert Earl Keen is one of the leaders of a new generation of Texas singer-songwriters. Like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and, yes, Willie Nelson himself, his artistry is matched only by an edgy rebelliousness that doesn't quite mix with country music's mainstream, which is exactly why he stands out in the crowd! This August 2001 performance is one of his five on Austin City Limits (his first was in 1989 as part of a "Texas Showcase" featuring four other artists.) His artistry and songwriting are on display for all to hear.
I saw him in Columbus years ago. A friend invited me. I had never heard of him. They closed the show in a crowded concert hall with three guys on acoustic guitars and NO AMPs and No MICs. They asked everyone to be quiet. 500+ listeners shut up for 3 minutes of pure haunting brilliance of their take on an old spiritual number. It was amazing.
But, he opened the show alone on acoustic guitar with a much slower version of this song. And, having never heard him before, I soaked in this tale of three friends causing trouble and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The utter brilliance of the last line when you realize who those officers were actually looking for...

In my opinion, the best REK song ever. Certainly the most underrated. And this live version is just awesome.
I’m with you
@@williamcole960 16 years to finally get a reply. Feels good to be acknowledged, lol. On the plus side, it had probably been 10 years since I last heard this version of this song. Happy to re-visit it.
FTR, for those who don't know, the date in this song is very important, along with the part about the helicopters, etc.
"These are just some sorry kids. They ain't the ones." tips the meaning of the song.
Dude.
Please elaborate.
OKC bombing. I got to meet REK and spend a few minutes alone with him several years ago. This is the song I asked him about, and I can promise you, the man is deeper than you can imagine.
"right or wrong, black or white
you cross the line your gonna' pay
in the dawn before the light
live or dye by shades of gray"...one of my favorites ever

Though I've know Robert for quite a while... one of the coolest things is seeing someone leave a note under one of his songs saying "I just discovered REK today" or "I've never heard music this good" or something similar from someone just discovering..... good music.
I discovered REK through my Lyle Lovett "station" on Groove. This is a great song. It's slower on the original, with some superb picking (Mandolin? Banjo, too?).
Gail Williams sometimes they speed the songs up live and slow others down. Different instruments. I’m a rocker but have been to nearly 10 REK shows now and I’m a fan for life.
Yeah -- it looks like he changes it up depending on his mood, because there are other live performances slower. I like it all. Glad I found him!
Robert Keen, Robert Keen, No Shades of Grey when it comes to your shows!! All Good, man. Please keep playin and writin. A great American Minstrel a musical-cultural Icon!

Used to watch him and Lovett play at Rudder Fountain at A&M when I was a student there. About a million years ago.
Just an amazing song performed by such a talented and hard working artist 🙏🤩👏
As a I was once a lyricist and vocalist, I am humbly envious of this man's talent, nay, gift.
I had the privilege of seeing him live once here in Milwaukee. I have been watching and waiting for him to come back to us for so long.
Also. Understand that I am a long-haired, head banging, mosh pit slamming metal head at my core.
But in truth, I love music. And I love writing and I love words.
REK is probably my favorite song smith of my lifetime. And I am a fan of Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin, Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce, etc.
I admit that I harbor envy and jealousy toward REK because he built the most epic song around the line, "The road goes on forever and the party never ends."
Any songwriter whose balls do not shrivel at the thought that they did not write that song is not worth their salt as a song writer.
You sound like such an amazing artist.

Robert Earl Keen is a legend in Texas! Seen him at least a dozen times all over South Texas.
REK is a legend everywhere-- not just in Texas. 🐸
Damn I forgot I made this comment. At the time I was only in my early twenties, forgive me of my ignorance.
I've adored this song for years. It truly has it all, great lyrics, outstanding guitar work and REK.

Rich Brotherton, Bill Whitbeck, Marty Muse and Tom VanSchiek are one HELL of a band. REK is the greatest American songwriter next to Dylan imho. I never miss any nearby show.

Yep, I was at that show. March 2nd at Terminal 5 in NYC's upper west side. At least a couple thousand fans, He had the 3-story venue rocking and everyone knew all the words. Amazing!
This is a truly eloquent song that I never fully appreciated until reading the comments below.
Saw REK last night at Newton NJ. He puts on a great show and doesn't disappoint. Played for almost two hours and most of my favorites. His band is hot, hot, hot and music was great. Crowd went wild at Merry Christmas From The Family. He gave us all a big smile for that. Hope he makes it back again in the not to distant future.
REK kickes ass. me andsome friendsrode our Harleys over 3000 miles, to see him perform at the Executive Surf Club in Corpu Christi, Tx. We had seen hi several times, out west. Never seen him in Texas. What a great time!! The party never ends!!!!
Good singers/songwriters in the Southern-Southewest-American Spirit are much appreciated and needed. Watch out, it will be the next "cool" thing. REK has my ear.
Picnic is my favorite recording of this song. Miss Rich, but this is great with Brian, Kym, Tom, and Bill.
Just heard this guy this am for the first time while watching Imus on Fox Business. He's really good.I like his style a lot.

First saw REK jr. around 1987 at Doc Ricketts lab on Cannery Row in Monterey CA. Nobody knew who he was outside of College Station. Nancy Griffith, REK, Lyle Lovett, Peter Rowan, Jerry Jeff... They all owe a huge debt of gratitude to KFAT/KHIP/KPIG radio for widening their reach beyond the Lone Star State to the Golden State. BTW- If y'all secede... I may come knockin' on your door. Been to TX too many times to count... from Texarkana to El Paso, Harlingen to Amarillo... God Bless Texas!
REK is the best singer song writer we have today. I have seen him many times. Each better than the last. Not only is he talented, but he is the nicest person you will ever meet.
this was a GREAT album -- "Picnic" -- it came out on Arista Austin, a sublabel of Arista. I worked this record as a college marketing rep for BMG. I LOVED THIS DAMN RECORD.......but the company never put much of a "push" behind it. If you can find a copy of "Picnic", BUY IT.........

Seen him live twice. Great shows and this is one of my favorite songs from him.
How much fun is a R.E.K. show ? LOTS !
REK always plays at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, which is a free concert with big names (Guy Clark, Peter Rowan, Emmy Lou Harris, Dolly Partin...Elvis Costello, for some reason) put on in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
I never missed REK at HSB when I lived in SF. He always plays in the evening of the last day, and his show is fun as hell.
8 ppl cant tell what good music is. So much songwritin talent. and a trure texan.
New album is fantastic. I'm gonna see him on Saturday!

I'm a new fan of REK's, having found him through my Flatlanders' Pandora station. This is my favorite of the songs I've heard (and purchased), though I prefer the slower original recording. He's a great storyteller!

Superb song from REK
Loved this since he released it - damn, this is superb
It's got a little feeling of 'road goes on forever' (and that's no criticism) - this is brilliant and such awesome playing

Originally KFAT radio in Gilroy CA (non profit family owned until late 70's) Played off beat hippie, country, rock, southern and blues music. I know... I grew up about 7 miles away. Family patriarch died, so the heirs took the station commercial. They hired my dad as the first Marketing Manager. Tall order taking these country hippies to commercial radio. KFAT became KHIP, then KPIG in the late 80's. Still in Freedom CA (Santa Cruz County)... Surprised they made it, but glad they did.
great song. one of the best story tellers.

I saw REK last year about this time(Dec. 2010) in Mission, Tx...Bordertown along the rio grande river. I think he had about as much of a goodtime as the crowd there.

The similarities between Robert Earl and 1980's Paul Kelly (check it out) is astounding. Lightning does strike twice, just on different sides of the planet.
He was great on Imus yesterday - don't miss "Merry Christmas from the Family" or "Five Pound Bass". REK went to A&M at the same time as Lyle Lovette - I think they were neighbors or lived in the same dorm or drove down the same road at the same time or something.
Gig ‘em! ‘90

@schwartzonthegrid First time I've heard the PIG mentioned on UA-cam. it's something everyone should listen too at least once. I have been introduced to many different artists there.
Welcome to REK!!! He is the bomb. Take a look at Road Goes On Forever. Gravitational Forces and Farm Fresh Onions are two really good CDs and there is a new one out today. See him LIVE if you get the chance.
"shades of Grey" so cool. REK has a great history with this radio station in California that basically got him known outside of Texas. It's called KPIG, and it rules. stream it free and see what i mean kpig dot com

I'm fairly new to country, I've always been a rock guy really, which makes me ignorant about country music and its different sub-genres I really dig Robert Earl Keen and some of the well-known traditional country artists like Roger Miller, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, etc. REK off-kilter songs appeal to me, does anyone have any recommendations to which album of his I should start off with and/or any other country artists I should explore?
Live at the #2 diner
John Prine is an excellent choice as well
That's Entertainment. Yeah.
Hey Kenny!
Cool song, great guitar work,Love it, anyone Know the title?

Robert Earl Keen, Billy Joe Shaver, David Allen Coe - they all would have made it big if they just would have dropped their middle names.
Cody Canada has a pretty good version of this one.
I love REK. Anyone else he sounds like Norm Macdonald sometimes?

Why isn't this more appropriately named "Shades of Grey at ACL"???
Cheese Can before that great show was an abbreviated pop fest crap.

oh yah, Best show ever was at Deep Ellum in Dallas around '91. Unbelievable energy! Another nod to Nor Cal music 'cause "Deep Ellum Blues" by the Grateful Dead made the place famous.... Just sayin"...

@jedellis100
If you don't know Steve Earle, you should look him up, though arguably he is as much rock as country. Also - Elizabeth Cook, Shelby Lynne, Justin Townes Earle (Steve's son), Jamey Johnson, Band of Heathens, to name a few. Some good sites for finding such artists are No Depression (was a magazine, now a website), Twangnation and Saving Country.
19 dislikers must listen to KVET.
@jedellis100 Hank Williams III you should really check out then.
"I'm not Timothy McVeigh!"
is that you brett favre
Check out Stoll Vaughan if you like Robert Earl. Very similar. "Fade Away" - Stoll Vaughan
Yes he was and I know he isn't ever coming back I just think Robert would do well to get another fiddle.
Yeah, he plays shows at stadiums in Texas, but go to another state and nobody's heard of him. Except the people with good music taste.
I cannot seem to find a video for "What I Really Mean" DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE ONE IS ?
