I'm in my sixties now, I've loved all kinds of music my whole life and these three guys as solo artists, but performing together they are just so incredibly good, and this is such a great song. Huge fan of all of them and huge, huge fan of the Flatlanders!
My (heroic) older brother performed this song with an acoustic guitar during a small memorial service we had for our recently passed mom. Great song, very touching, and apropos. His rendition choked us all up. Love you Mom, hope we did you proud.
All three voices are so different... yet these guys are great friends and share songs back and forth. Met them in 1971 in Lubbock. Probably the bestest ever group musically ever.
Jimmie Dales' voice is truly transcendent... when you are in his presence, it is akin to entering an elevated realm~ he is is a lovely gentleman M Mystic ❤❌❤❌🇨🇦
I love these guys; before I die and before they die I want to see them live in Texas. Too many talented musicians are dying off these days i never got to hear George Jones live, or Waylon or Johnny Cash or BillyJoe Shaver but I did see Merle Haggard 2X and John Prine, and I’ve seen Willie already just in case. As the song goes: who’s gonna fill their shoes? in many of these cases nobody can or will
Always good to hear actual real country/western music. 99% of top 40 Nashville country radio listeners don't even know who the hell Bob Wills is, non the less these guys. Just damn sad.
I like to think of these guys as real folk artists -- just from West Texas. There are few "country" artists I enjoy, and most of them are close to my age (71). I think the youngest is Dwight Yoakam, and he's 60ish now.
Just good, solid, RHYMING LYICS, with awesome and very UNIQUE VOICES ..... GREAT, GREAT MUSIC, compared to 2018 7/11 music ((7 words, repeated 11 times)). One man's thoughts. .... thanks, Gene Henry.
I'm glad the people who listen to the poppy bubble gum pussyfied so called country music of the masses don't know these guys and there kind are.cause they don't deserve to hear such great music.
one of my friends laughed when i said i liked country then we went to a J.D.M.& B.H concert i said but you don't county he yeah well not dolly or tammy but this then we got to see theses two every time they came to England we also got to see the great Jonny Cash sadly my friend has passed away he and his wife were good friends miss them both and the music
My heart soars like an eagle in flight whenever I hear the Flatlanders play. I pray for 1 more LIVE concert somewhere, sometime. Sort of like listening to Dawn Sears sing LIVE.
.....I'll take the Shinola...thought I was dreamin that this song and this performance was a masterpiece....watched it 10 or 12 times...I still think I'm a genius in judging musical artistry...
Mark ROGERS Hell, if you picked this for a winner, I think you're a genius too! It is just precisely, absolutely perfect. And that just doesn't happen much.
Why did these guys never get more air time. I found them by accident, when I picked up one of their cd's at a yard sale. And why doesn't Butch Hancock get more credit as a songwriter?
In the 70s I heard JD Gilmore a lot in Denver playing with the Supernatural Family Band. They were all involved with the Guru Maharji's Divine Light Mission.
What beauty, what class, top quality music played by the masters, this can not bettered. This comes from a person this a follower of top rocking Thin Lizzy, CCR, The Doors, Jim Morrions, Rory Gallagher & U2
@@driverain2 Yes in the west, way out in the mountains but in a different country, in a place called Connemara, Ireland and yes I have also been to Texas
wow. just found this. awesome. been listening to gilmore with dave alvin. so good. followed alvin for 40 plus years. saw ely maybe 40 years ago. he was great. but one thing really hits me. i saw sierra ferrel a few days ago. check out lighthouse, my favorite. she would totally nail this. i wish she would cover it. her voice and presence...omg it would be heaven
If you were a bluebird, you'd be a sad one I'd give you a true word, but you've already had one If you were a bluebird, you'd be crying You'd be flying home If you were a raindrop, you'd shine like a rainbow And if you were a train stop, the conductor would sing low If you were a raindrop, you'd be falling You'd be calling home If you were a hotel, you'd be a grand one But if you hit a slow spell, do you think you could stand one? If you were hotel, I'd lean on your doorbell I'd call you my home If I was a highway, I'd stretch alongside you I'd have you pass byways, that have dissatisfied you If I was a highway, I'd be stretching I'd be fetching you home

Still going strong,if you get the chance, go!
Jimmie Dale Gilmore still has that great voice.
yes. check out walk on with dave alvin
Oh my gosh.....
West Texas gold.
These are the artists that we overlook...and then go " THEY WE RIGHT HERE...RIGHT BESIDE ME...!!"
PURE GENIUS
Absolutely fantastic..
My (heroic) older brother performed this song with an acoustic guitar during a small memorial service we had for our recently passed mom. Great song, very touching, and apropos. His rendition choked us all up. Love you Mom, hope we did you proud.
Aw man, that was a great thing you guys did. So sorry for your mother.
You did!!
Said it before….
Will say it again , one of the best songs to come out of Texas in the last 50 years.
Jimmie Dale Gilmore sure has a great voice!
They all have! So beautiful and touching!
....otherworldly...gifted from spiritual realms unseen ✨
All three voices are so different... yet these guys are great friends and share songs back and forth. Met them in 1971 in Lubbock. Probably the bestest ever group musically ever.
TC Smith, yeah, I'll go with that. They are just so so so dang smooth
I once went drinking with Joe Ely and his band in Ljubljana, Slovenia. I gave up around 6am, Joe and his guys were still going strong.
Wow! You weren't drinking with Joe Ely. I'm so impressed
Bluebird is one of my all time favorite songs... and at its best performed by Flatlanders. Butch you are a genius! And all of you are adorable!
I love Jimmie Dale Gilmore's voice. It's very distinctive...it has a bit of Hank Williams twang to it.
Jimmie Dales' voice is truly transcendent... when you are in his presence, it is akin to entering an elevated realm~ he is is a lovely gentleman M

Agreed! He's my fav country singer.

And a little Willie Nelson sometimes. Not that it takes away from his ability! His voice is very special.
like a cross of Willie Nelson/Rudy Vallie....
gotta be one of the best performances ever, of anything....
These guys are wondrous...
I cannot do anything but agree. Super performance.
I agree

anything the stupid shallow masses don't know about is a good thing in my mind.

@@patricksheeley2138 the fun is in the finding of impossibly rare gems such as this.

Best line ever
Horsehide I am torn between that one and “big ole Buick’s at the Baptist church , cadillac’s at the church of christ”. Great songwriting
Sayonara Kitty, yeah, daggumit, you got me there. That is a pisscutter as well.Kudos for that!
This is such great music and yet is probably unknown to the vast majority of fans of the Nashville country pop machine

Texas Americana Roots music. Absolutely the best.
Now this is the real stuff
This is soul healing..its honest
Truth here.
LEGENDS
3 of the best on 1 stage. Awesome!
I'm speechless. Beautiful. :)

If this song went on for 30 minutes it would suit me, of course is was over all too soon.
Great group ❤
Best version of this song I have heard. Gorgeous.

What a truly beautiful and poignant song.

It´s called taste. You got it.
I heard this for the first time a few years ago ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

I remember watching this on Television, and fell in love with this song they did. Thanks for sharing it. Great tune.
I am jealous. I had to wait for years and hear tons of crud on youtube, haha

Everyone has talked about jimmy dale's vocals but for me this song isn't complete until Butch Hancock hits the mike. JMO

Top that
I'll always love Emmylou's version beyond anything, but this is pretty damn good
Rich Horton, do not let your stuff and EL's stuff confuse you. I do understand, trust me. But this is the clear winner, regardless.
