When I use a mono dry line, I use 9' of leader material, then I add on between three and four feet of tippet material. Well not real tippet material, I stretch some light standard line that I stretch out, before tying on, it works very well!
Hi Lindsay, another great video this. What do you think about tapered leaders for dry fly fishing, and in general? I fished without them for years, or with a pretty short braided tapered leader, but mono tapered leaders seem all the rage where I fish now.
I have my own system that works for me. I don't fish very much still water, mostly rivers, so my presentation is seldom cast and wait, it is casting to specific targets or a spot that may hold a target. Their window is small, quick and I think mine out of ten fish are reacting to a stimulus rather than real identification. I do not do competitions so my approach is a little different at least psychologically.
I would go with the National champion he probably knows what he is talking about, I use Drennan Sub Surface Green mono 3,4,5lb never had a break in 30 years. Tight Lines😮
Excellent Lindsey ,up there with the B,O Clarks and Davie Mcphail, can you please give me a heads up on the head magnifying set you are using as us old gits need all the bifocals assistance we can get
Stuart, that is very kind but I know I have some considerable way to go before reaching those boys exceedingly high standard. The magnifiers are a real god send and I did a review on them a while back, here is the link. There is a link in the description where I got them from. ua-cam.com/video/Uvvp69XbkdQ/v-deo.html
@@lindsayiflyfish Hi Lindsay, well you may think you have a long way to go but you have to consider the actual object you are presenting, sure BO Clark and Mr Mcphail ty 25000 plus per year and they are neat and tidy but not a word about how they are fished as opposed to you and the likes of Rob Denson and a few others who give the method and thatrs important ,the method in my opinion is far more useful than tying a fly thats slicker than whale poop in a ice flow , ok thanks for the link
Lindsay, my fly tying magnifying light has just given up the ghost after 28 years, I am stuck in the Philippines due to the bug. I would like to purchase a pair of head magnifying googles similar to yours however, I am stuck in Asia and will have to purchase online. Can you offer any advice? I wear glasses so I don't know if this is a problem or not. Thanks. Reg
Lindsey should this first fly remind me of one you guys use over there called the "Bibio?". I thought I watched this but I may have been mistaken. You could fish this alone in the surface film quite easily. I enjoy your cynical humor I have missed it. If anyone needs seal, Lindsay knows how to find me. A great fly Lindsey, has it fished well for you? I was reading Gary LaFountaine's book "Challenge of the Trout," a heck of a good book. He said that it was important to understand the strike window, because at times when fish are being difficult, if you can drop a fly very close to the fishes window, it can elicit an autoreflex and it will strike out of reflex.
The Big Red, would it be better to put a couple of wraps under that cut off stub, to keep it up a little and out of the way? Nice job! I think it should work well!!
@@lindsayiflyfish I moved down to to Kent a few months after 9:11. So Bewl is now my local water. I miss the range of trout fishing in the north east especially Langley dam near Hexam. Whittledene went to the dark side. It became a coarse fishery
Great, thanks for the fantastic video and the useful ideas 👍
Thanks for watching pal 👍
@@lindsayiflyfish I tied some bobs bits and fished them with great success yesterday afternoon 👍
@@markjones4031 Brilliant thats great to hear real simple fly but deadly.
Excellent very instructive session Thanks
👍 Thanks buddy
Good tip on the length of line, I rarely fish dries but will give it a go this season.Tight lines
Keith, thats exactly right there is no need to cast any distance unless you are covering a rising fish.
Would you transfer the principal of these methods over to loch lake fishing for wild Brown trout??
Yes, absolutely!

Hi Kerry, does that not weaken the tippet strength though?
Excellent video, feeding circle was very informative, you really should have more subs.
Thanks Brian, I will get there eventually buddy. Thanks for watching.
Lindsay, I would appreciate it if you could tell me a website where I can buy that red dubing. receive a cordial greeting

I like tapered leaders for the rivers but don't much bother with them on the stillwaters.

Do you use a tapered leader? Or strait through tippit
Large Stillwaters straight through for smaller venues I use 7-8’ tapered leader.
Thanks. I'll give that a go. Only allowed 2 flies here in Victoria.
On yer cast that is. Not in your fly box
@@derekcunningham9993 I prefer just two flies when fishing dries.
I can't wait to get back in the boat on the reservoir, it won't be long now.
You and me both pal!
Do use the big red on Still water or a river
Stillwater for me Carrie but I dare say it would work on the right river.

The big red is a hugely popular fly on the large Stillwaters here in the UK. It is not my favourite but is always worth a go on your cast.
Good Lindsay, actually, very good
Thanks Mike.
Pretty fancy presentation!
Thanks pal.

How is your memory? Do you remember the depot barber at Albemarle? Mike Shaw. Small world isn’t it.
I do remember him he used to fish as well👍 Ousten was a long long time ago!
