Great update to your original video! (Me: ‘21, F250, 6.7) I waited until my fuel tank was down to 1/4 full. I invited my 15-yr old son to join me so he could learn the process. We disconnected the upper, engine fuel filter to further reduce the potential of siphoning. Additionally, we loosened the lower filter housing bolts to break the seal before opening the drain valve. Maybe it was overkill, but IT WORKED! No mess! Once the housing drained (less than 1/2 gal), it was over and we finished the task without an issue.
I’m not sure of the politics with SPE, but I replaced the OEM valve with their billet fuel drain valve. Simple install, seems to be a solid product so far.
Anyhow, thanks again for this update and sincere thanks for all of your excellent and informative videos. I continue to enjoy learning from you with your honest, no nonsense style. You’re an excellent teacher!
Thanks OC
Personally I replace the secondary filter first. Sometimes I'll leave the lines disconnected. I unscrew the 2 bolts by the drain all the way, open the drain and then the middle bolt halfway and it usually drains completely in a few minutes.
I've had diesels for over 20 years and every single one I've always did the fuel filters every other oil change, from the 7.3 to my current 6.7 which I've had all in between. No fuel issues whatsoever and my 6.0 was built for sled pulling/drag racing, always using only Motorcraft filters.
I just drive until it’s a 1/4 tank, no prob. Now that is settled, how about a power steering flush video ?!??!!!
Super video A-Rod I hope diesel goes down so I can fill my tank all the way to the TOP
Algorithm Boost!
I'm concerned I may brake the fuel line, LOL. I tried changing the filter with nearly a full tank and found it works well around 1/8 of a tank of fuel. Less than a half gallon drains. Thank for the tip.
i just changed the filters on a new to me 19, and at a half tank i got 2 quarts of diesel out and that was it. stopped dripping, no mess in the garage...
After watching your videos & a couple others I was ready to do my 1st fuel filter change on my '21 F250 super duty.
With a full tank I changed the water separator 1st, but didn't reconnect the lines. Cracked open the fuel filler cap 1st to break the vacuum.
Drained the filter without bothering to disconnect the line in like the manual suggests, total diesel drained into my tray was maybe 1/2 gallon
Very simple & no mess.
Excellent thanksnl for coming back and leavin some positivity
I have found that loosening all but one bolt prior to opening the drain and then loosening the final bolt after fuel starts flowing, eliminates siphoning.
This really saves time and mess for me.
I haven't had any issues with draining, I wait for the trickle and then start cracking the bolts, I find that when air enters the system the fuel completely stops. I also went to Home Depot and got a mortar mixing tub (on their website they call is "medium mixing tub"), they are pretty big and hold at least 8 gallons worth, it makes it easier and catches a lot of mess. The price is good too, under $10. Thanks for the video pal!
Yeah siphoning is a real problem on a setup like this. I wondered why you didn’t talk about it on the last video?
Good information
Great info , thanks . Quick question , so we should disconnect the fuel line when we drain our water separated filter every month ?
Arod, I tried changing fuel filters on my 2017 today, disconnected the fuel line at the top of the fuel conditioner, and still drained out like 2 gallons. So I just did it the way you did it like 5 years ago. Ended up wearing some of the fuel. But sometimes I change it and it’s fine. I never have less then 1/2 tank. 🤷
Would it be safe to say, to change the filter when you have a quarter tank? To prevent the weight of the fuel from pushing its way through?
Thats always worked for me on mine.
I park mine on a slight slope with 1/2 tank or so and I don't have the siphoning issue or at least I haven't. Then let the filter drain and remove and dump in a bucket not too messy at all.
I fought that battle on my 2017. Just make sure you change the fuel filter with the tank at 1/4 or less and it stops pouring.
Crack all the bolts loose just enough that the lower cover comes down a bit then crack the drain open, never had any issues and stops draining pretty quick
Dumping it and breaking the seal by loosening the 8 mm cage bolts and givin it a wiggle…wait till it’s mostly drained…then remove. Breaking the filter housing gasket seal seems to do the trick every time thus far
Ive drained 2 gallons before it stopped draining, I have a 2017 F350
Haven't tried this technique yet. That said, have not experienced the siphon effect on my 17 cc longed. Tks aarod
I have full tank changed mine less then 1/2gallon of fuel loss.
Limted, The bosses truck. Great video Arod. 🔥🔥
Great timing! Did mine today. My buddy with a Ram stopped by when I had just started and was blown away by how easy and clean of a job it was. Less than a gallon drained. 4 ignition cycles and it started on the first try. Appreciate your videos.
Good video, ARod thanks for sharing.
Wouldn't it be easier to disconnect the inlet side on the primary fuel filter? I'm assuming you are replacing that one also.
Sure
Nice job did miss this week’s podcasting
Sorrry buddy
i would say that is a smart way do it.
Oh jeez... Draining multiple gallons of fuel out of that filter and not realizing it's siphoning out from somewhere :)
It is totally a vacuumed issue like that. I never noticed it before but I usually change my fuel filters on my 2017 alumaduty when I'm at a quarter tank. It stops draining. Last week I changed my filter w a full tank and it pissed out over a gallon and a half before I caught it.
This is another awesome video thank you. I was hoping you would so something on this and BAM here it is. You are the man.
Thanks dead guy
Aaron, wouldn't removing the filter in the engine compartment first stop the syphoning effect. It's basically accomplishing the same thing as disconnecting this fitting the shop manual is referencing.
Yessss
Interesting video, nicely done Aaron.
Is this the same for CAB & CHASSIS
Yessss
Happy Friday Arod
Some guys say if you take fuel cap off it stops the siphon also
Is that true or false
That has nothin to do with nothin
Do you see any difference with aftermarket tanks when draining? i.e. - S&B 60 gallon
I think you’re supposed too leave the clip half ways and it will go in. Taking the line off the clip does fully extend out. Thats just what I’ve realized on the newer trucks.
Torque spec?
Thanks again. Great content
I’m so glad my 2016 doesn’t have this style.
Now I know how to do a clean filter change in my dreams.
Mario!!!!!!!
Nice as usual!!
Hey arod
Would like to know how the reliability
Is on the 6.7 powerstroke
cab & chassis vs pickup
I was told there is some difference
And it's not just the programming they have different egr and so on
I would like to buy a new 6.7
cab and chassis but just concerned
With repair costs
Your reply would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Ok
What’s going on fella
Cliff is #1 comment today 🤣
@@CPsGarage ohhh yeag
Sorry late
This sucks, can Ford do any better, put a darn spin on fuel filter on it, you need to recall every super duty and replace Ford's supted idea, I own a 2022, this beats all I've ever seen
Bro where u been, we did the soin on thing already
I do it the original way you showed us 👍
I have 2016 6.7.. changed fuel filter once a year and today. Came to an issue of lower filter is not filling up when priming.
Not getting fuel to come out at all. But pump sounds like is working. Any ideas what could be causing this?
Proba ly did t tighten the lid like everyone does
@PowerStroke Tech Talk w/ARod
Also double-checked that. Also using a motorcraft filter. I can't get thing any tighter. It's flush to the tab.
Don't know a lot about these trucks but is possible that the fuel transfer pump went out? Is there even an in tank fuel pump in these trucks?
Thanks in advance.
Just the frame mounted pump
I had the same problem with my 2016 6.7 and I even took a yellow paint marker to mark the tabs. But that day could get my truck to prime, so $300.00 later towed to my Ford dealership, and they got it and there answer was it wasn't tightened enough. Sad thing is it was the same way I always did it.
@JERRY KNORR thank you for this. Atleast I know I'm not the only that had this issue. Tried working on it today again with a new sets of motor craft filters thinking I might just had a bad o ring from the the previous one, but still no luck. I'm Clueless at this point so I'll be taking mine to diesel shop on Monday since my ford dealership is booked 1 month out.
Have a great night.
Not sure if I’m doing it wrong, but I let it drain for a minute or two and it usually looks like straight diesel coming out of the drain so I break the filter bolts loose and it will stop draining and then I can take off the filter without making too much of a mess.
Same way I do em, easy peezy.
Omg
Since this typically comes with an oil change, any opinion on prefilling the oil filter? I've been told this by multiple Ford techs at one dealership. Citing that not priming the oil filter may cause spun rod bearings.
I don't believe that, oil pressure is instant almost after start.
@Kenny Smith Jr not in my experience. It takes noticeably longer to build pressure after an oil change.
I have never pre fill a oil filter.
Many vehicles have filters on the side, no prefilling them. Several have top side filters, no pre-filling them.
That being said, I pre fill my 450.
Never prefilled
Oh yea that’s easy if you have a lift and can get it over your head. Not so easy if you are doing it on your back.

There he is
Why does Ford make it so complicated just put a canister type filter on and Collett a day everybody else does
