John was a remarkable writer and performer. Buffy's voice was angelic. Thanks Leland.
What a wonderful song! I've always loved listening to his music. Thank you.
Thank you Leland for the shout out to my favorite songwriter of all time. I still listen to him every week. I enjoy your work too.
In High School in 71’ Lonesome Picker was my inspiration. It was fun for 10 years then my future wife said go to College and get a Career. I Saw John a number of times, was at the Phoenix Concert and got to do some workshops with him. A great wonderful talented person. While working in an office I lived my life vicariously through the wisdom , compassion and music of one of my Hero’s. Who even knew who Leland was back then but it’s so nice to know he was part of the soul of John’s music. Thanks for all great memories and music.
Impeccable guy .
Impeccable wife .
Impeccable compositions .
Wonderful memories of all that they both achieved whilst down here on earth ..
No doubt if there is a place we laughingly refer to as being heaven , these two angels are together again , looking down at us , and feeling sorry for us , that we aren't where they are right now .
I saw what may have been his last concert in Seattle, a few weeks before he died. He was incredibly soul bound and brilliant. And he was in so early as a singer/songwriter. I remember he was part of an album by...The Journeymen?...in 1961. They were doing a centennial album of Civil War songs. I still have it. John sang on one song I remember. It was about a union force following a battle and fleeing for the coast. A soldier is dying in a field and another gives him the new boots sent by his girlfriend. It was sung with so much world weariness and Stewart could not have been more than 20 years old. He left us so many great songs.
I love John Stewarts "Bombs Away Dream Baby" LP from 1979. another fantastic post. cheers everyone.
One of my favourite John Stewart songs! Thanks
This channel is legend. Every episode and their companion copious notes are worthy of their own museum. Play on!
Agree.. Lee is a great human being...
This song deserves listening to twice. Once to watch you listen to it, and once to really listen to it with my eyes shut.
Stay safe and stay well!
I'm a big fan of John Stewart. Saw him perform several times. In my opinion he didn't/doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Thanks, Leland.
Thank you for featuring John Stewart, Leland. I have many of his albums on vinyl. I saw him live when he visited London back in the 70s, it was a stunning concert. "Gold" is one of my all-time favourite tracks. I love your channel, keep it up, thank you!
Evening Lee and all
Greetings from Epping,UK
Cheers Barry 🎸
Evening Leland and everybody
I enjoy it every time I sit at the feet of the masters! There is The Greatest Generation, and then there's the Greatest Musical Generation, and music will never be the same. #PeaceAndLove!
Never heard of him. Thank you.
John Stewart. Pretty song! Another new one for me. Lovely! 🌻🦋
I like had not heard this before.. thank you. I have always liked the live version of July You’re a Woman so much and I think you will too.
Great song off one of my all time favourite albums.
I actually had occasion to meet John Stewart, albeit passingly, when he played a gig at the Pasadena Ice House in 1967, when my cousin had the thought to go there with a camera in hand to hopefully snap a few promotional photos, which he did. I was still in high school at the time. Whether the photos ever got used or not I do not know, but I was able to recount the experience years later to Buffy when I got to meet and chat with her briefly on the late Scott McKenzie's Facebook page. She was happy to hear my recounted memory, which was very shortly after John's passing.
Thank you Leland, this recalls the thoughts of my initial introduction to the music, and mystical spirituality of John Stewart.
Always a pleasure, Lee...great selection today. Kingston trio way back memories...many moons ago✌❤bass days.
Yes, I remember John Stewart and was a big fan of his music. He came in to the Kingston Trio and gave songs like Reverend Mr Black and Desert Pete. He continued with folk music for years and in around 1980 finally had a top ten hit with the song Gold with Lindsey Buckingham. It's great how you put a focus on some artists that are not well known. Thanks.
Buckingham played guitar on gold?
@@lastnamefirst4035 and Stevie sang on this tune.
John Stewart was my hero. A great artist and songwriter!
Another fantastic post and a musical treasure - thanks, Lee.
So beautiful.
I wasn’t familiar.
Loved it.❤️🎸
Hi Ann, 😊
Never tire of your history, quite surprising, nice production values it sounds great. Thank you, Leland Skalar. And again thank for the publis awareness.
Thanks for the music Lee. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge/stories!!
I’ve always loved this song. Thank you Lee
Another unknown! I had such confidence that I knew everything about music and all the artist from this era!!! Haha thanks Lee!
Absolutely love the song gold with John Stewart & Stevie Nicks ❤️❤️❤️
Don't forget, Lindsey Buckingham added his guitar to that album.
@@alanriley9621 👍😉
What a legacy…Thank you so much for sharing these amazing stories with us with such appreciation! Not to mention for being such a kind soul, stay safe my friend!
Thanks Lee for John Stewart!!!!!!
Wow that Levon Helm band sounds like a super group!
No joke. Have to see if I can find any of their music
@@lastnamefirst4035 1st album is great, called Levon Helm and the RCO All-Stars.
@@leekosmin8788 thanks. Ill find it and definitely listen. Cant go wrong with the many great musicians
@@lastnamefirst4035 Rain Down Tears is a great track. All the tracks are good.
Fred Carter was in Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks, which also included Levon Helm, who later became The Band. Fred was also on the Bridge Over Troubled Water album.
Hey, Lee and all! That melody embeds itself into my head with that delicate 3/4 rhythm. Lee, you and the other musicians have such a refined legato. What chemistry!
Hi Winston! 😊
@@splashesin8 Hey there, Audrey!
Learned of John Stewart when the Willard album first came out. I knew I wanted to play guitar when I heard Freeway Pleasure.
Hauntingly beautiful composition. Your sympathetic playing has just the right touch!
Thanks Lee gotta get back into some John Stewart wow I had not heard this track in decades. I think my roommate that I had a minor crush on in Tucson in grad school had this John and Buffy record that you played. So all those good memories come merrily rolling back now.
Punched another jewel on the way back jukebox. Love the tune. Thanks for sharing.
60 Minutes last night really highlighted the healthcare workers...
I saw that too
Thank you so much. Grew up on John and my California Bloodlines. Was in Phoenix for the great Live Phoenix Concert. This Lonesome Picker album was me and my friends favorites and we learned our picking. Look up the Kingston Trio reunion with Lindsey Buckingham and how his picking was influenced by Johns banjo playing. Great man, beautiful soul, beautiful music.
A little town on da coast in Marin Co. Where they still live in da 60s & 70s Era!! Grandpa Jeeves 🤙🎸👈🥸🎶🎻
Any further word on the documentary? So looking forward to it!
Another artist I knew very little about. Thanks for joining some of the dots on his career.
I haven't commented in a long while, but have enjoyed listening along. This song is absolutely lovely. Again, my wife and I thank you for continued support in this long covid struggle. BTW, I came across the video profiling the Wrecking Crew. I liked seeing you with dark hair (lol). All the best to you, Lee. 😊😊
My sister lived in Bolinas for a while ! This almost sounds like classical music ! Thank You As Always!
No click track or auto tune - just real people making real music.
How soothing love this great share.
Thank you for sharing the history and information you have had in your profession and noting key players. Like much or oral history if not shared it will vanish.
Thanks for introducing me to John Stewart. Wikipedia here I come ! 😀
Beautiful.....thank you
A great hit with Stevie Nicks in 1979 was Gold. A nice pairing there. Lindsey playing guitar on that one. Top 5 hit for John,
Wow the string arrangement is stunningly beautiful. John Stewart & Buddy Ford’s voices blended so well together!.
Was that you bowing the stand up bass? When it came in it blew me away..
I remember when Stewart replaced Dave Guard in the Kingston Trio and I believe he had the lead vocal on The Reverend Mr.Black. “Gold” when he was a solo artist went gold with Stevie Nicks accompanying vocals brought him back to my awareness and in a new light years after departing The Kingston Trio and leaving the traditional folk idiom.
His solo singer-songwriter career often reminded me of Gene Clark’s path, distinguished but often under appreciated and overlooked.
Absolutely beautiful..knew the name as a songwriter, but not familiar with his performance. Gonna check out much more. Thanks for the introduction. Stay safe🖕
Youre preaching to the choir, Mr. Sklar.
Beautiful tune.
👩💜😴🛏🌙
What an amazing talented man 💓 Great way to end my day ! Lovely
Good morning Lee , have a nice day 🖐🏻
Love John Stewart! ❤️ This is gonna be great❣️ Oh man! That combo! All of y'all! 🔥❤️
Great video Lee, my fave tune from John is Gold. I always loved that song.
He.wrote another great song that the Lovin Spoonful recorded, " Never Going Back to Nashville.,"
I just checked out his Wiki page. I learned something. His brother Mike was in the We Five who had a number 1 hit. Mike went on to produce Billy Joel's Piano Man album. As well as work with Tom Jones, Kenny Rankin etc..... Thanks Lee, I would've never looked this guy up if it wasn't for your channel.
We Five...you were on my mind?
@@lastnamefirst4035 That's right, went to number #1 back in the mid 60's.
I saw the We Five with The Deep Six and Dick & Dee Dee (The Headliners) at a rival High School my freshman year sometime 1966-67. I never knew about Mike Stewart or his career (outside of The We Five).
Great info!
@@rikconverse8726 Thank Mr. Sklar for sending me on a journey.
Randy Schaffer: I think you just did that yourself! ;-)
Good morning☕️
Good morning Lee.
Great stuff that is better on a record rather than tape or cd.
Saw John a couple of times on new years eve at the celebrity theater in phx az in the 70s. Didnt know he passed away
John’s storytelling in this song is as timeless as the song is indicating.
Bolinas is the westernmost peninsula in Marin County across from Stinson Beach. This song could take place in the 1800’s, 1900’s or today. Timeless.

@@lastnamefirst4035 I am near by. 👍
@@artemisXsidecross I love the area. Good people
At one time famous for not liking daytrippers coming into town, to the point of taking down the road signs pointing their way. Sort of the Greta Garbo of Marin towns.
@@TFinSF I used to see an old guy who sat naked on his front porch everyday smoking a joint And its chilly weather. Typical Marin county folk
Just in time for my lunch break, good timing Lee
That Buffy Ford vocal thow 😮
When the lights go down in the California town
People are in for the evening
Always thought a funny line in the song gold
Great line from a excellent, rocking song.
Fantastic song Lindsey Buckingham on guitar helping out Stevie nicks on background vocals
Leland: How is Kootch doing these days?
Getting better. Long journey back.
@@lelandsklar6363 Indeed and I thank you for your reply. All my best to Kootch and the Immediate Family.
@@lelandsklar6363 they ever find out the official cause of her death Lee?
Great gem today. You are doing a great job Mr Sklar.
Very nice thanks for sharing and
Expanding my musical experiences

Oh Leland.....this selection of John and Buffy is so beautiful! Takes me back. Will definitely seek out more. Thank you💞. You have put me in a calm mood💓
Stay safe everyone 🤗 and have a great beginning of your week 😉👍✌️🌼
Love both John and Buffy. First time hearing them together
I love these as well. I have a few I carry with me all the time. I think one may be Dakota Roads. Hi Lynn! Hi Sue! 😊

Hi!Lee!Long time no see!How are you doing? I just did the concert with Kaz and Tom (Original Kingston Trio Dave Gard's son) yesterday, and did all the Kingston Trio songs. It was really a fun time! Well, I was just checking the UA-cam and here I saw you, so I just wanted to say "Hi!" I am planning to do my own concert net year hope you can make it. Best, Ruese

Love Brother
I'd forgotten about the tune eat at Joe's from Susie bouguss and I noticed on the voices in the wind pulled out CD/ album it has you listed as not only bass but also vocals how cool.
Were you doing a lot of background singing on that album?
Though technically, since Saturday Night Live didn't come into being until 1975 they weren't yet the SNL horn section in 1971. 🧐
I know but that is how they bill them on the music site. It was just those guys!
@@lelandsklar6363 Figured that...just yanking your chain a bit!
😊💚
Used to go to a joint in Bolinas for breakfast w a friend every sat morning
Only knew of Gold. Very different to that.
Nice add though. Ridiculously early as sleeping wasn't an option. You loaded it earlier than ever!
On another subject, I've just watched a very average show called Why women kill. Set in Pasadena. Fancy 'burb. Do you have one of those really high palm trees? They seem to be such a signature of LA. Sorry, blabbing on, it's 6AM.
No palms on my property but some in the area.
My palms need trimmed. Quite a task for the guys who do it
@@lastnamefirst4035 I imagine! What happens if they are not trimmed? They wouldn't last long where I live because it is so windy
@@michaelrobinson1275 neighbors will complain 😀 and then what??
@Lastname First I worked in Libya for some months. Over there people told me that they cannot find people to collect the figs any longer because nobody dares to climb up anymore… 😱
I hope all your copious notes turn into a copious book!!
Feel free to ramble all you want. We enjoy listening to your thoughts and story
