That opening is a straight-up Medieval Church Organ piece using human pipes! This is an appropriate application for the word 'awesome'. Cannot imagine being in the room were it happened, you are indeed a lucky man, Mr Sklar. But you MADE your luck, by being among the tiny handful of best bass players in the world. And by being a total pro, with no ego, no drama, no drug/alcohol fueled missed sessions/tour dates, just a positive attitude, with humor and humility and a whole HEAP of talent. Thank you, sir.
Ahhhh, man...back when they were still speaking. "To the Last Whale (Critical Mass/Wind on the Water)" is on my list of Top 5 favorite songs ever. I get teary-eyed. Every. Single. Time. I cannot even imagine the joy, the thrill of having played on the track.
And let´s not forget the first Crosby--Nash LP.. I was a kid listening to "Whole Cloth", "Page 42"..and so much more....great moments still come alive when I hear those songs...
I was in line at a movie years ago in Rhode Island. I turned around and David Crosby and Graham Nash were right behind me. Really cool. Just two buds catching a flick together.
You sure it was them? David and Graham haven't talked for a few years. Graham is royally pissed at David and has been very public about it.
And do you remember which movie it was?
You are right about them not getting along. I even heard David recently talk about all the bridges he burned. This was 30 years ago. I was in a touring band and had an evening off. I guess they did too.
Funny you ask that. I really have tried to remember the movie. But I really do remember Crosby. He was so close I was surprised his mustache didn't tickle me!
I was fortunate to be touched by wind on the water, music has got me through life.
As you said Leland, it really was a golden age. So many great musicians in southern ca at that time
This album is truly one of the main reasons I made it through a semester of college. I would play it every night after classes and work as I waded through my studies. Thanks for contributing to my graduation. ✌🏼🤍🤟🏼
Solidarity!
Love watching you close your eyes during the song and transport yourself back to that session, we fans also close our eyes for songs like these and transport as well. Thanks for the journey.....
Wind on the Water is in my top ten favorite albums. I play this album often, it's incredible. Everyone was at the top of their game. Pure pleasure.
Crosby always had the voice of an angel. Even now.
Crosby and Nash are the soundtrack of my college years. As a duo I thought they made some remarkable recordings. “Carry Me” is a such a soulful song. Thanks for this wonderful trip down memory lane, Lee.
Such remarkable harmonies! You’re blessed? We’re blessed to have the recordings and have you to share them with us.
Stay safe and stay well!
Wind on the Waters...still one of my favorite albums and concerts. I saw the concert tour of the album at Red Rocks most likely in the summer of 1976. Their was a big screen set up with a video of humpback whales while the song was played. It was an amazing concert with all of you on stage. If I remember correctly I counted 19 guitars on stage that night. WOW
Oh, thank you, I'm in acoustic heaven!!!
I know nobody will probably see this comment...but I've revisited these videos a few times...Leland has so many hard to keep up let alone go back for a second or third watch...I just have to say though wow...Crosby was so blessed with a beautiful voice. I cannot imagine how great it must have felt to be in studio with these men creating these masterpieces...what an honor. It's an honor to just listen to Leland talk about these times...what a great life...what a great life we all got to live in these times...
I miss Croz...I still think about him a lot. It was nice to talk to him once in a great while when he was alive and active on FB even...
Their harmonies were some of the best. I remember Graham Nash in the Hollies and his voice is so tight.
How I wish... You were so lucky to be involved with music during this period. Some of the most beautiful music was created back in these days, unlike a lot of the garbage being passed off as music now! I thank YOU and ALL the musicians that created and supported the real music of this time.
I adore that magnanimous sharing of musical talent during those days. It warms my heart.
Those guys never got enough credit for those 2 LP's, outstanding recording!
I was fortunate enough to see and hear David and Graham back in 2008 in Green Bay, WI at a Beautiful venue called the Meyer Theater. I thought I'd never get to hear these 2 angelic voices and the I was once again being transported back. There is absolutely no 2 voices when put together, sound like this. Bought Wind on the Water 1 day after it hit the record stores and was blessed to hear such wonderful songs. So beautiful! I wish you had been there Lee. Anyway, I thought of you playing when they did those songs and Kootch and Russ. Just plain wonderful music. Don't hear this kind of music anymore. They also did the title track and was blown away. Thanks for everything Lee.
"Nobody does brushwork like Russ Kunkel." Oh man... you took the words right out of my... well... fingertips, I guess. Was going to say the exact same. His brush playing on ballads is instantly identifiable to me - totally unique, on this album or with James or on whatever with whomever. Some seriously elegant playing on this disc - and some of his very best, I think. Thanks, as always, Lee. Have a great rest of the weekend.
I was able to get backstage to a Jackson show (World In Motion tour) , and he spoke much praise or Mr. Kunkel. What a lucky character Leland is having played on such a beautiful, wondrous recording. PSA Miami, Bless
Linger as much as you want Leland, no rush, its just great to sit back and listen to your stories. I miss proper melodies and harmonies in songs. Great tracks
Lee you have no idea how important this was to me. My own dad passed away this Saturday the 28th. It was difficult seeing his decline but now he's free. I was lucky enough to have attended a show during this tour in New Jersey at what would have then been the Garden State Arts Center. Three beautiful songs that I've listened to oh so many times never thinking they would be so connected to my own father's passing, so thanks Lee for playing these today.
A gold standard of excellence! Nash and Crosby should have tied you guys to their bootheels and never looked back.
Great album by great musicians, one of my favorites
I was at a Marc Cohn show at the El Rey a few years ago and Graham Nash & David Crosby were in the audience with the rest of us. Speaking of Devonshire Downs, I went there to see 4th of July fireworks in the 70s.
David stole mark cohns guitarist jeff pevar... Leland...have u ever worked with jeff pevar?
I remember devonshire downs in the 70s. Think maybe I went to some car shows there
Amazing vocal harmonies always, eyes closed and suddenly it feels like Lee is talking to me, one to one, in a way I suppose he is!
The Laurel Canyon years, amazing.
Wind on the Water has a total classic music vibe in the beginning....Bach......OMG I remember this song!!! I didn’t know I knew it! Holy Shit! Thank you........Beautiful......
Jimmy Haskell - string arrangements on Wind on the Water.
Loved Crosby & Nash on "Mexico". I was one of the surprise highlights of The '77 Universal Amphitheater Section/JT show!
Thank you playing and talking about your background with such great music. The one year I caught CSN at a large concert and the stage was dark but a screen came down and you could hear whales singing...and the screen lights up just enough to see these huge beautiful Humpback Whales...it was breathtaking and the song starts..."Wind On The Water" it was breathtaking. I think I recall the audience just being taken away by the music the whales and these great harmonies. Just beautiful.
I did not realize you have played on so many recordings of artists that were just my very favorites. Thanks.
Great songs. Great time in history.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Some of my most favouritest music ever!
Aaaah what memories thank you Lee it certainly was a fabulous period for music. just gorgeous. 👍 a great way to start the week here in NZ - 0921hrs Monday
Leland i was put in the HOLE..LOL recovering ;)
Whistling Down The Wire is a beautiful album. I remember seeing Graham Nash playing "Wind On The Water" on Dinah Shore's show, "Dinah's Kitchen" in the 70's. Graham on piano.
Hello Leland !!!! Love love love love Crosby and Nash !!!! Saw many concert in Italy and a fantastic solo concert of Crosby in Como Italy and Graham Nash in Dolomites !!!!!! Of course have all their records and CSN&Y and CPR too !!!!! Thank you !!! Ciao from Milano Italy !!! Take care.
Dang, Leland. I have no words. This is the music to which I grew...so much awesomeness'. Thank you for this. I'm gettin' old. Sixty one isn't what it seemed to be many years ago. I'm writing a song about that now. Wish you could play bass on it, but it'll be me yet again, and I suck. But you inspire me man. No freaking doubt.
Graham Nash- best high voice tone ever. Heard him live with the Hollies, had that voice just like their records. No studio enhancements, that was really his voice. Thanks for sharing. Goes without saying, the band and Crosby was great too.
Incredible album..probably the pinnacle of 70s L.A. music scene for me.
Man, those harmonies so perfect thanks to all of you, such timing. What an Amazing voice.
Man !!! Did that take me back to a really special time in my life ....... Thanks so much ..... !
I love these stories - thanks very much !
Santa! I Love you man.
I've always loved the harmonies of the C(S)N(Y)-Songs. Such beautiful songwriting. Thanks for bringing them back and sharing them!
A Tom Sawyer Day! 😄 That would be a hoot! Of course, I'd have to travel quite far to help out with your mailings. It would not be feasible; but I can imagine how much fun it would be hanging and working with you, your fan/friends, and the BOYS! I'd probably be spending most of my time playing with Marcello and Rossano. 🤗🐶😄
MERVEILLEUX! MAGNIFIQUE! MERCI!
Beautiful memories!
As you said: a golden age!
Good stuff huh? Brings back memories and still carries me away to this day. Great music Leland always admire your stuff. Thanks.
Finally Leland! ,,,yes I saw the Wind on the Water Tour....so amazing...The recordings were wonderful and his solo album with your work on Evette In English is brilliant...thank you for sharing those times..Houston Coliseum and Roy Hofienz Pavillion...You guys, it was just SO FLUID...it WAS a Golden Age
I've seen CSNY several times, great shows all, but when we saw Croz and Graham playing and singing at the Greek that was somehow more special.
You and Russ have been my favorite rhythm section since the hits have been coming out. Thanks for making me feel so good!!
I played Wind on the Water as the plane flew over the Kyte studios carrying Keiko to Icelandic waters. Great song still in our library today.
Always loved CSN! This took me back as well. Thank-you...
Wow, just wow! This was a great addition to the 3 song run these past few days. I fervently hope you won't hesitate to revisit some of these songs with Frankenstein or the others in hand to play for us. I so enjoy that coming here can be either a revelation or a sweet memory.
Carry me & Wind on the Water...amazing.
Thank you for the daily elevation! Peace and love.
love those songs. the harmonies are untouchable. their voices blend so beautifully. you did get a lot of free advice yesterday. I had a bunch of old 8mm films digitized that my dad and grandfather shot from 49-69. fun to watch the good old days.
Hi Lee. Another great video. Thanks.
Three beautiful tunes. Thanks. I may have to listen again.
Have always loved these two. Exquisite harmonies. Meaningful lyrics. Wonderful bass!
Wow! Just an incredible selection, Lee. Totally enjoyed that. I play that album a lot. So beautiful. So meaningful. You’re a lucky man to have been involved with so many of the best. Thanks for what you do professionally. And thanks for what you do....for us!
Fantastic tunes...bass is like butter. Thank you🖕
Cary Me is simply a great great song.
The Echoes In The Canyon doc really captured the heart of that time.
My best friend lived in Porter Ranch. We sat on his roof and listened to Hendrix playing at the Downs. It was June, 1969. Pretty cool.
Magical time
Been watching for about a year. ...is there anybody you haven't played with? ?!!!you sir are absolutely amazing! !!!
Excellent choices, those boys really know how to harmonize, the album was released on September 15, 1975. It is a shame that David and Graham don't even speak to each other these days.
Thats their personal issue. None of our concern. Enjoy the muaic
Neil doesn’t speak to David either so he must be difficult to get along with
I listen to this now, and recall being immersed in it all back then -- and it blows me away that that's YOU playing, Lee!
At the time, I was thinking how "uncool" the 70's were, as i was living in that decade, with the side-burns, bell-bottoms, plasticky radio music, the "Me" Generation, etc. But the best thing about that decade was the music -- Jackson, Eagles, Crosby, and the like. In that sense, it was a great era. BTW, Croz was always a visionary and innovator who had a big impact on popular music.
Thanks for taking us through the process with the swag! I’m learning something new! Another fun show!!!
Very powerful tune, Carry Me. Reminds me of my late Mom.
Crosby Pills and Hash..and Young. I always thought that was too funny. To be in the room when some one brings in a song like 'Just a Song Before I Go' Congrats on doing all these amazing songs justice on bass.
Thanks Leyland, from New Zealand.
Lee you are good and quick packing those shirts!!!!!! Kind with the extra tape too!
A wonderful set of tunes. I loved it. Such good music.
Thank you and stay safe yourself.
Love the insight and passion!!
Beautiful song, amazing voice, Thank you Lee.
Live this album..thank you!
Poops LIVE this album that is!!
Thank You for doing these ! Love from Claremont !
Good old Claremont. Went to college there.....
What great tunes - killer vocals too. Real songs. I hate to be an old fart but commercial music doesn't have this side any more. Then again, maybe I just have to look deeper. Thank you for being an oasis.
i grew up with this stuff, yet another great vid from Lee! Keep em coming Mr Sclar.
Tom Sawyer Day was a wonderful and touching suggestion. If only we could.
Some very meaningful music👍😎
When checking out acoustic guitars, always ask myself if Crosby would approve of the sound and advise to get it or pass. Deep respect for this man's musical knowledge. 👍😎
👍😎❤🖖
Love brother
You and Tim Drummond where great around these guys. Great stuff.
Carole King played piano & vocals on Homeward through the Haze with you.
Rik, you are correct in your thinking about Carole playing the piano and singing on Homeward Though The Haze.
In the fall of 1973 my future wife and I were close to the front row of a Crosby Nash concert in Boise idaho... I remember the concert was spectacular!!! The electric guitarist was amazing... he was featured in a tremendous lenthly instrumental I didn't recocnize as a Crosby Nash piece... at the end of the song after the crowd went wild Crosby with total amazement said "Do you want to know who makes music like that! Daryl Stuermer!"
David and Graham were beyond amazing...
I have a vauge hunch Leland you were there too...am I right?
Love. Love. Love.
Many years ago I didn't buy the album, but I did buy Wind on the Water...still one of my favorite songs of all time.
Beautiful. Thank you.
Not to correct the PRO that are Lee, but the first part of the song is called Critical Mass,...Winds on the Water is the outro tune,...one of my favorite CS&N tunes,...and they have an assload-o-tunes to choose from!
Happy Sunday Leland!🎸😃💕
I was sad tot hear they're still not on speaking terms ... these recordings sound fabulous, bring me back to my teens! You're entitled to feel proud of this body of work (but try to get them together again)! Greetings from The Netherlands 🧡
13:52-14:26... during this part, I was thinking that it was David Crosby playing the electric guitar and not Dan Kortchmar (a.k.a. "Kootch"). Since you said that it was "Kootch", he sounded pretty good.
Thanks for sharing this video, Leland.
beautiful songs. the a cappella start to wind on the water ('critical mass') was - I think - written by Crosby.
Lee if you don't mind, just include overseas shipping increases the cost of the item as a disclaimer and way to gage your price. Stay well safe and healthy.
Exactly! Greetings from The Netherlands! 🧡
Thanks Lee 👍🏻 saludos 🇲🇽
I did not know you were on those. Some of my favourite albums
Great sound!
Thank you.
Nice Lee..So much music I would probably miss if it weren't for your channel..Not to mention your stories..
Hey, if we could all get together to whip out those shirts and books, i would even buy the pizza! ;-)
I'd love that - let me know! Fan assembly line.
When you said you picked 3 songs from wind on the water , u couldn’t of chosen better ! I. Had forgotten what a great album this is ! After the first two songs I was hoping that wind on the water would be your third pick. Love the section ! PS I got the new cd !
