There is no 'versus' for me. Both are beautiful and truly there is no conflict between one rite and another. In the Catholic Church there are also Byzantine rites.

The old Latin Rite is indeed beautiful. The only trouble is that most Roman Catholics have never seen it. It is not typical of what happens in Roman Catholic churches, whereas, the Orthodox have not changed their Liturgy. It is still beautiful.

Yes, I agree with you. For 20 years I was an altar-boy for the Tridentine mass. I asked why radical reforms were introduced in the 60-70th in the liturgy for catholics and not in the East part of the Church (Ortodox or Greek Catholics); I was answered that Ortodox or Greek world didn't suffer ''The Protestant Reform'' so they didn't need ''radical changes''.

The Tridentine Mass only started to be a code in 1570. I agree that this should be preserve. But I also agree with the use of Novus Ordo because it uses the vernacular language. In using the vernacular language, we will be able to pray by our hearts. Using the Latin Language will take time for some to understand it. Others will not even take time to study the language. It is just like what Jesus said in the Bible about people who are praying repetitively but not using their hearts. To make Jesus Christ the center of the celebration, just focus in the Eucharist. I am thinking of the format of Tridentine Mass but with a vernacular language.

Paulo Padilla The Novus Ordo is intended to by celebrated in Latin. The Traditional Mass goes back to the 7th Century, with many of the parts and canon going back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries.

      That's untrue my friend.
The standard Roman form was universalized in 1570. It replaced the local usages which were less than 200 years old. In substance the "Tridentine" Mass goes back to the very beginning of the Roman Church.
Finally, the Novus Ordo was promulgated in 1969! What an awful year in general, let alone one for the development of liturgy.
      A 1960s bourgeois artifice.

    • @matthewrich5474
      @matthewrich5474 7 років тому +7

Paulo Padilla is RIGHT. Mark Valens, what is the difference of CODIFIED and UNIVERSALIZED? You just used a different word. lol The FACT that only ONE FORM is being implemented is because there are SO MANY FORMS that are being used before 1570. And because it has many forms they have to UNIVERSALIZED it so NO ORIGINAL FORM was really used. TRIDENTINE MASS is a result of the many forms that were circulating before 1570. NOVUS ORDO on the other hand is a MORE PRECISE FORM that has been copied from the one circulating in the EARLY CHURCH. Just like for example Jesus Christ did not have his BACK facing the apostles. Jesus was facing the APOSTLES in the Last Supper.

ask the Cardinal who went in the middle of the sermon in Constantinople with the Excommunication, ask the Pope why he didn't seek true reunification he only sought to subdue the Eastern Churches to his supremacy, ask why he sustain the doctrine of the Filioque?, ask him why he hold to the doctrine that it is a purgatory.... there is no such place described in the bible... ask why he didn't condemn the Crusades specially the 4th where the crusaders killed raped and made a mockery on the Patriarchal throne of Constantinople by putting a whore on the Patriarchal See?, ask him why the Pope keeps lying people about the truth .... the only reason he will lose power and support among it's clerics if he denounces.... I think everyone of them knows that the east is what Jesus's church should've been.... and the west changed it's Rites now the Orthodox church is trying to rebuild the old Latin Lithurgy of Saint Pope Gregory the Great who was a Deacon in Constantinople for Western Europe and Celtic Lithurgy in England, Wales and Ireland.... the Western church lost it's core elements when the Papal Throne lost it's way and itself the throne become a Gaming thing for the Emperors and other people.. more like a Game of Thrones way... see the Borgias history...

It's complicated. Orthodoxy has to do with both right doctrine and right (way of) worship. There has been a tendency in the Eastern Church to only regard the byzantine rite as the only proper way to conduct a mass, but that is (slowly) changing. Focusing more on your own points "meaning original from the first centuries and a valid liturgical formula", I'd say, not exactly. The Tridentine Mass was established after the Great Schism and as such is considered in the East as a novelty (though more original than the Novus Ordo). As for the liturgical formula, there is the old debate between East and West about the liturgical requirement for transubstantiation - the Roman Rite uses solely the words of constitution, while the byzantine rite adds (and insists on) the epiclesis. Some Orthodox ritualists, therefore, consider the Roman Rite that does not contain a form of epiclesis as liturgically invalid.

Percernis The 'tridentine' mass comes from before the schism (from Pope St Gregory the great). At Trent, the mass was codified and instituted everywhere as variations of this rite had developed (e.g. the Sarum use in southern England) and to combat the services of protestants.

At two point of this video the viewers can see the Rites of the Malankara Orthodox Church. This is an Oriental Orthodox Church which uses the Divine Liturgy of St. James which is one of the longest Mass ceremonies. In fact the church at 6 mins in is in fact my own church. (imagine my surprise when i saw my Godfather :D) The service being conducted at the 6 min mark was a processional for easter. The second video 7:30min was the beginning of Mass. Once the processional around the altar is finished the Trisagion begins.
Our service contains both West Syrian and Malayalam the local language. Before our church split in the 1900s I believe the majority of our services was in Syriac but local priests and lay people desired to understand the meaning of the services rather than keeping it a mystery. A priest once told me that even the Bible used in the church uses a different codex than most, the Syrian Peshitta.
Its nice to see the similarities between the Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox, and the Catholics. Lots of similarities between vestments.

The Tridentine Mass is the CODIFIED Liturgy of the Western Church. The Novus Ordo, was promulgated by Anti Pope Paul Vl and he did not even attempt to abrogate the codification of Pope St. Pius V on the Tridentine Mass. The Novus Ordo is NOT a valid Mass not even close. Although in their treachery IT COULD BE. I stay away from it. As an example, I attended an Orthodox Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and it was IN ENGLISH. The Tridentine Mass is still the Codified Mass of the Roman Church but so too is the Novus Ordo which MIGHT be a valid Mass and might not be. Moses King the only way to be restored is that it’s celebrated Latin style in vernacular language. Like Guadalupe mass. Otherwise it won’t be. Also it happens that most of attendance of the Catholic Church comes from Latin America where people are obsessed with charismatic and Pentecostalism, so many many Catholics are turning to those Protestant lines. That’s why the pope needs the novus ordo. Keep the Latinos clapping and Catholic Church will survive.

"which is unfortunately often devoid of this level of reverence" I wholeheartedly disagree with your statement. The "Novus Ordo" can and has in many places absolutely been celebrated reverently, even more so than the TLM in some places (Like Diocesan TLMs, which some tend to be just awful). Also there was liturgical abuse before the Novus Ordo Missae, such as the Priest zipping through the Mass in less than 15 minutes and some even mumbling the Eucharistic prayers, which may even affect the validity of the Sacrament...
This is an example of a Reverent Novus Ordo celebrated by Benedict XVI, which in my opinion at least is superior to the TLM:

@@francisobi6851 The Ordinary Form can still certainly be celebrated, but "even more so than the TLM"? No, not even close. A reverent Ordinary Form is extremely rare (ad populum or ad orientem) and depends entirely on the parish's pastor and the local bishop assigning the priest. The Ordinary Form is growing rarer due to the current Pontiff's disdain for it. And forget Diocesan TLMs, some regular Diocesan Masses are worse by tenfold. There will be liturgical abuse for any form of Mass presented, but the abuse of the pre-1962 liturgy and that of the Mass 1970 and beyond are incomparable. A Mass said too quickly cannot be compared to a Mass where the Eucharistic prayer is completely freestyled, or the priest gives a blessing with a guitar, or has a layperson proclaim the Gospel or give the Homily. I think both are bad, but one is CLEARLY worse. If the worst liturgy a Catholic had to be worried about was one said too fast as opposed to one that was completely invalid in every way, we would be a much better Church. Again, both are bad, but one is worse.

First, the comparison is confusing: there is a disorder in the presentation of the structure of both liturgies (the Roman starts with a Cardinal giving the final blessing!). Second, there's a mixture of pontifical and non-pontifical high Masses, both sung or not, from the Western side. And finally, there is a combination of different Eastern rites --starting with a hierarchical Russian Byzantine rite and ending with a common Antiochian rite (as far as I am aware). From the (Roman) Catholic side, I'd like to point out the fact that the Holy See has stated officially that all Catholic rites --Western and Eastern-- are equal in dignity and importance.

You chose odd moments to compare. I'd have expected equivalent points of the services, but they're in completely disjointed and only superficially similar. "Here's an Orthodox bishop at the altar; here's a Roman bishop at the altar. Here's a Roman bishop censing; here's an Orthodox bishop censing. Here's the Roman rite where they ring some bells; here's an Oriental rite (Syriac?) where they ring some bells... The eastern rites shown aren't even all the same ones, and some are much better organized and executed than others. There's really no true comparison here.

Such language is not horizontal; it leads the worshipper to elevate his heart and his soul to the transcendant God,' as Stuart Koehl reported. Too often, dishonest members of the orthodox church presented the worse liturgical abuses from the 60s 70s and 80s to show the "superiority " of the orthodox liturgy over the Catholic liturgy. It's true that not every Roman Catholic parish performs clown masses, but the very fact that this practice is embraced without excommunication, or in the least, suspension of such activities, demonstrates the liberalism of Rome, and it's departure from the Traditions of the Church. The West has watered down liturgics and embraced a mediocre path away from reverence and mysticism and toward a bland, dying set of practices that resemble the most vapid Protestant innovations of the last 500 years.

World leaders, kings and queens, heads of state all request audiences with the Pope in recognition of the importance of the Catholic Church in world events. I don't see the Archbishop of Constantinople being invited to world events, nor do I see any secular or political world leader knocking on his door ! You live in a world of fantasy in which the theocracies of the Byzantine Empire exist only in your mind, The "glory" of orthodoxy and the Byzantine Empire has been dead for many centuries, and orthodoxy has mostly been conquered by Islam. As the Turkish government recently said,"The so called archbishop of Constantinople, is a cleric of a minor sect, which has no importance or relevancy in Turkey.." I agree. No such statement could ever be made of the Pope or the Catholic Church. Elaborate liturgies which go on for hours, and priests in gold vestments do not change the fact that orthodoxy is dead. So continue to argue about the date for Easter, the Filioque, and leaven bread versus unleavened bread for the Holy Mass, while you fade away into the obscurity of non relevancy.

Orthodox never dies because Christ is not dead! But I will not argue, especially with such Latin crusader like you. If only you were a true roman catholic Christian, you will understand that not discussion about bread, date of Easter and so on is main problem between Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, but a problem of Filioque, which represented a true difference between eastern and western understanding of the Holy Trinity, which is a center of Christian's life. But you prefer flaunting such secular things like "independence" of Pope of Rome (tru-u-ully "independent", especially in XIV century). You commenting like a pupil who play to much in "Total war" games series. I disagree. The parts of the Mass that are intended for the instruction of the faithful (the Bible readings and the homily) use the vernacular. But it is fitting that the part of the mass that is turned to God uses Latin, for it is a dead language, therefore its meaning can not change, and each word will always mean the same thing, which avoids variations, mistakes or even sacrileges or confusions . Today there are almost no illiterates, and the faithful can follow the translation through the Missal. All the older people I know are unanimous in saying that in the past there was more respect and piety in worship than today, even though they did not understand what was being said in Latin. With the Mass in Latin, the faithful could travel the whole world and would always find the same prayers, the same gestures, the same piety, and prayed in the same language. Now each episcopal conference is responsible for translations. Sometimes countries with the same language pray the Mass with different translations.

In all honesty and let’s be really honest here the orthodox and Catholic Church believe in very similar things the main reason they are still separate is because of politics. The orthodox bishops love their independence and don’t want to submit to Rome in any shape or form. While the pope is in no way willing to tone down his authority for the sake of reunification.

The Oriental Orthodox broke away from the rest of Christendom after the council of Chalcedon (hence the name Non-Chalcedonian) in 451. They disagreed with the theology which the rest of the Church agreed was the truth "it felt good to us and to the Holy Spirit" (the pronouncement at the end of each council), and refused to sign the document at the end of the council stating such.
They use the liturgies usually of St. Mark / St. Cyril, St. Gregory, and St. Basil, whereas EO use primarily St. John Chrysostom, though also sometimes St. Basil (Lent), St. Gregory (Presanctified during Lent), St. James (on his feast day).

@JohnBelz Quite right, except primarily from the opposite perspective; it was invented to make Protestantism more accessible to Catholics. It was invented to convey an understanding and attitude toward the whole of life, not just the time spent in church, and that is exactly what it did, and that is why the NO faithful are much more tolerant of things like abortion than Trad faithful are. And FGB Dude: that makes a huge difference and it IS important, ABSOLUTELY. And that is merely on the moral level.

The Malankara Orthodox Church of Kerala in Southern India is one of the oldest churches in the world. It is said to have been brought to India by St Thomas the apostle and interestingly the liturgy is conducted in old Syriac, similar to the language that would've been spoken by the apostles at the time. It is a church of many beautiful rituals and rite and it also blends in traditional Asian Indian practices of having celebratory parades for feast days, parading figures of Jesus under adorned umbrellas, and even parades on elephants. It's very beautiful. I love all of the Christian churches! I believe that the important thing is that we all have faith in Jesus Christ, have a great day! God bless!
