  • Welcome back y'all! Season 2 is officially here!
As a recap, in case you missed June's Budget Eats Q&A, June's been MIA because her mom passed away last October. In her own words: Yes, I’m okay; yes, I’ve taken time to rest; yes, I’m still grieving, and probably will for a very long time, in various different ways.
This will be the first episode of Budget Eats that June's mom will not get to watch, and to transition back into shooting again, this topic felt like an ode to her mom and tradition.
Please enjoy and hold your loved ones closely. Happy Lunar New Year.

I’ve missed you. I found you in 2020 and I remember you calling mom about a dirty lotus root you wanted to use. I thought it was sweet you could call her and ask. Now I get to meet LaLa too. I think your mom would be so proud of you using up her pantry, making special dishes for granny and thinking of mom while cooking. Such a beautiful tribute. I know you are a strong, smart, sassy woman. Rock on!

Hey June, sorry about your loss and this is such a special way to remember your mum. The fried-chicken-looking mushroom is actually dried 竹蓀 (pronounced as sūn) and we call it bamboo mushroom. My mum usually put them in soups and they taste amazing as they soak up all the flavours! Happy Chinese New Year, hope you have a great year ahead ❤️

Growing up in an Asian household we've all got those kind of ingredients stocked up and I in my late 20s love getting tips and recipes to use especially as my food palette has revolved around British dishes as I was born and raised here and I'm needing some more Asian style meals. June, this was an incredibly wholesome homage to your mom. I teared up whenever you said, "here's to you mom" right before you ate. Your grandmother's reactions were so hilariously sweet and heartwarming. This was lovely. Great job. Also, your hair on day 4 looked amazing!!!

Oh June! This video had me in tears from start to end. I deeply respect and celebrate how you have incorporated your mums memory and her ingredients in your recipes and you’re grandma just makes me so happy. She’s so sweet and loving, reminds me of my grandma.
Thank you for sharing this video and just for how you are. You are a treasure! ❤️❤️❤️

This hit me hard from the start. My dad died unexpectedly in 2019 and we donated what we could to a local soup kitchen he used to visit every day. I'm thinking of you and sending love your way, June.

All of those shelf stables reminds me of my own mother’s pantry. The mismatched reused jars from jams, sauces, and pickles filled with mushrooms, beans, and barks. I’m gonna give her a hug next time I see her and marvel at her collection :) happy new year

This was so sweet. Such a profound way to show how food, culture, language, love, relationships and memories are all related. It was so brave of June to share so much with us in her moment of vulnerability when she could have easily continued with the standard Budget Eats formula. Really, truly appreciate it.

Yes it is. It is a fungus that grows wrapping around the roots of bamboos or other organics in the field where bamboos grow. Extremely fragrant when used in a soup. It's a delicacy from my hometown.

this episode was awesome, it was worth waiting for such a long time. I went through all the emotions, because budget eats is so much more than a regular cooking show. it's what all content creators wish to be but can't, because the only way to do this is with authenticity. I cried because I also miss my mum that lives on the other side of the world, I giggled because your grandma is so sweet, I awwed when Fred sat with you at the table patiently waiting for BE FED WITH SOME OF THOSE THINGS! you are one of very few people I am willing to watch for 2.5 hours just mixing questionable expired ingredients and see if it works or maybe not at all, just like in life. 100/10!

I don't think there will be one person who watched this that didn't feel a connection and couldn't relate to losing someone you love.
