I want one of these, starting to look for one. Thanks for sharing potential frustrations users might have, and to me messing with it is half the fun to understand how it works, genius really.
If you have a No45, that’s a great one to start with first. The technique for using it is very similar but the 45 is a bit lighter and sometimes easier to manage. The 55 is its big brother for sure
O , yea the monster of planes 55 , it's such a joy to use one of those never have one though but I have the Veritas 45 and I love it 😊 , thanks for sharing man. I always practice with mine just for fun , make all types of shaving 😊 then hug it with my scrub plane eating wood like crazy , just like charm to start again ☺️.
They become real fun when you start using some of the #60 Ogee cutters in conjunction with the auxiliary centre bottom. My 55 is a Sweetheart model with the straight spurs, I noticed yours has the 'star' spurs. Fun toys 😀
Cool tool! I seen a similar one at a local antique shop once. It was so complex looking that I was afraid to even pick it up. Later I wanted to check it out but it was gone.
Hello thank you for the video - there is not a lot of information about thus plane. I've got a Stanley No 55 and I got some trouble with fixing the fence/screws it likes to loosen and the fence moves which is a bad thing -do you have an Idea what one can do about it? thanks anyway
I would start by ensuring the screw threads are all clean and the screw hole as well. It’s possible they could be dirty. Or they could be worn from a lot of use. If that’s the case, replacing it would be best. You *could also try some type of thread tape if you want to stick with what you have. That or tighten it with a screwdriver or other manual method as applicable - but that’s sketchy as you don’t want to mess it up. Feel free to send me some pics to jplanefun@gmail.com
I really like both. The 55 excels at certain profiles (I have a video on that too) and the 45 is a bit quicker to set up for the flat ones. For folks on a tight budget I would recommend the 45 to start with. Master that and then work up to the 55. Lots of parts (accessories such as depth stops) are interchangeable between the two so that’s something to keep in mind if building one up from parts
I have a quick question about the 55, I just finished brushing off the worst of the dirt and surface rust from the body on mine, but discovered a crack at the top of the handle casting just across from the top handle pin. I’m not sure if it’s just residual grit around the adjuster wheel or if the casting is bent a little, making it harder to turn the wheel, but is that fatal to the plane in the long run? I haven’t reassembled it to try out yet but the handle is still in good shape, so I’m wondering if that happened because it was in a wet environment at some point and the handle expanded.
Not sure what would have caused it but if you find that it’s not serviceable, let me know - I’m nearly certain I have a direct replacement for just the main body section available for sale. You can move all of your good parts over to the replacement
@@justplanefun Will do once I try it out in the coming days, and I’ll contact through your facebook group if an online storepage isn’t available? Thanks in advance!
I've recently bought a no 55E plane, it's a stanley sweetheart. I haven't used it yet, been to busy cleaning it up! You seem to know a lot about the history of these, do you know what the E stands for? And does the 55E differ at all? Thanks.
No sir. That’s been my user 55 for a couple years now. I do still have the ones I got from you though. At least a couple of them are really, really nice like the one in this video.

Very nice demo, Thanks!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Looks like a fun plane to mess around and definitely less messy and noisy than a modern day router. The iron looks pretty sharp as well
I think that’s one of the few I haven’t sent to you for sharpening 😜
The iron in the bedrock was sharpened by you though. 😎
@@justplanefun well send them over!
very helpful mj, i'll be playing with mine in a few days!
There’s a learning curve to em but once you get the hang of it, they’re great!
Thank you
Great video
Thanks for watching! I have another no55 related video in the queue, just gotta find the time to record it
So cool!!!
Awesome video Mike. We need more on the 55
Thanks Paul. If I had the time (aka: money) I would make 2-3 videos per week like the big boys do. But I’m too busy trying to sell hand plane parts 🤓
You made it look easy. Great result.
It *is* easy. So easy a caveman could do it… #geico

That’s definitely the way to go. Practice makes progress!
Great video & you make it look so easy .
I truly believe anyone could do it. You could probably put it to work with one hand and one eye closed 😜
It'll be a while before I can afford a No 55...unless I get lucky somehow. Great video!
Idk where you look but I found a Stanley 55 set at an antique store for 170.
@@martydom666 was it 100% complete?

Agreed - they’re fun to use. And easier than some folks think.
Esta plaina 55 é incrível, fantástica.
Continua sendo o sonho de consumo de muitos marceneiros.
Another informative video MJ. Keep on truckin bud. Hope you and family have a Merry Christmas.
Thank you sir. Hope you and yours are doing well too. I wish I had time and money enough to make 2-3 videos per week.
Thank you
Excellent I did almost the same as you a couple of months ago. I was hoping you would show me how and when to use the cam.
I’m my inventorying the no45 video I mention the cam. Check it out when you have a moment!

They do look complex at first but there’s nothing to it once you get intimately involved with one
