Stanley made the chip deflector when they introduced the fork shaped match (tongue) iron. The idea was that the deflector would deflect the left side shavings to the left and the right side shavings to the right. It’s really only intended to be used with that one iron ( Stanley never made a sash cutter for that plane) Stanley originally made the 50 as a beading plane and when the match cutter was introduced later they found the plane clogged without the deflector. You don’t need a depth stop with that iron because it has its own depth stop sandwiched between the two cutters. And a little grinding on an “elevator bolt” and a wingnut to fit it is a good workaround for the small iron retainer bolt. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much for the important informations. Especially the tip how to use the plane with the smallest cutters was exactly what I was looking for. I couldn’t believe, that Stanley produced such poor quality, that you were not able to fix the small cutters - But you showed the solution! Very helpful. Now I just have to check, if I have the special screw. Keep going 😊
On some (older) 50’s if you tighten that slider, you won’t be moving that depth stop unless the cutter locking wing nut is loosened up. It gets pinched buy the slider and blade. Makes the operator reset the cutter to adjust the depth stop. But you gotta love how well it works, when it’s cutting.
I’m in England. I have a complete and almost mint No.50 (I’m missing the 3/16” blade) but every thing else is in place. I get regular use out of it too!
Great job M.J . as usual . I've been searching half the world over for the narrow iron holding screw . Side note * From this day forward my best advice to anyone in general will be , " Don't let your Knicker come unstowed. " Bless up !
Brilliant talk through I picked one up today in the UK and now I know it is complete thanks to you good sir including chip deflector and small iron screw and it only cost me £45 or $56.70
MJ, I was looking for the beading stop I know I bought from you and couldn't find it. Until I watched this video again and realized it was on the slider. Yeah, I felt really stupid for not seeing it in the first place.
I just purcahased a no. 50 from England for $166 including shipping. It is complete and in good shape with all attachments. The only thing I need to do sharpen the irons.
Great vid! Easy to follow, makes me want a 50 even more now. I will be over in England in a month for an anniversary trip. I’m sure the wife won’t mind if go tool hunting. Right? 😬
She won’t mind at all! Just be sure to check it for the return trip. I don’t think TSA would much care for those sharp blades if they were in your carryon 🤓
Ignore my last comment, It just arrived. It's in near mint condition (which I wasn't expecting) it has both spurs AND the short depth stop! The seller must has just missed them out of the photos. So I have a complete No.50S. I'm a happy guy!
Just brilliant, having just bought one ( the 50 ) for? Yes £50 sterling. There were a few things I was uncertain about, ie what went where? your video was just what was needed, the two main ones were the chip deflector and the two skinny little irons, now I know what the large screw is for, synching to two babby irons. Absolutely 💯 % informative clear and concise so thank you very much indeed 😊 I have not bought it to store but to use it. Woodwork and hand tools great finish and very rewarding looking at your finished work. Also can be very therapeutic 😌. Thanks again cheers Les. If you've a mind to look for anymore more e bay uk is a great place to look. All the best 👍.
Outstanding! I’m glad you found it helpful. I did end up selling the one from the video because I wasn’t using it enough to justify keeping it. I have the 45 and 55 too so I’m not doing without a combo plane. I agree 100% that using these old planes is therapeutic!
Cool plane, I looked at buying one of these but realistically it doesn't do anything that my Record 044, Stanley 45 and 55 planes do. The 044 is a great little plane for knocking out rebates on small jobs. Great Channel, love your work 👍🍻
I just bought a wooden handle nickel plated No.50 with Stanley basic set of irons although it has a full set of vintage Record irons (beading/tongue&groove) pretty much making it a No.50S The one thing that appears to be missing is the short depth stop, it has the long beading depth stop however. Missing both spurs but I dont think I'll need them. Planning on making a replacement depth stop when I can find the dimensions somewhere to complete the set and then use it to make a box for itself to live in! Nice informative video. Much enjoyed. Greetings from England
Basically the Record 050 is copy of the Stanley 50, so identical in use. The Record 043 and 044 are simpler and faster to set up for ploughing grooves, which to me equates to being much more usable.
I just got hold of a really nice Stanley 50 thru ebay. I was looking for videos to learn about the various parts and nuances and your video was really very informative for me. By the way, my plane has a rosewood handle and is made in England. Any idea around which year this could be and how does it stack compared to some other year stanley 50s? In any case, the condition of my plane seems to be excellent and the set is complete. I am really eager to play around with it and put it into action.
Unfortunately I’m not up to speed on the No50s that were made in England. The wooden handle may match up with the made in USA ones with wooden handles but I’m not entirely sure.
@@justplanefun no worries. I was just curious to know but it is not as important. Yes it has a wooden handle like the US made ones and quality looks great. Also looking at the condition (looks pretty new) it is either from a latter year or the previous owner/s maintained it very well.
I don’t know if it was marketed to any demographic in particular but in my experience, where the no50 excels is with small projects. Stuff like small signs or the little pencil boxes (i.e. rabbeted lids). You’re right about the no45 being up to the same tasks but it’s bigger and thus more cumbersome for small stock
That’s a great question. I’m a Stanley guy almost exclusively so unfortunately I’m not educated on the Ohio stuff. If you pose the question on one of the Facebook groups, one of those folks may know. For combo planes, I like this group best: facebook.com/groups/338501060326620/?ref=share_group_link
Any pointers how to use a narrow blade here and still be able to use the skate? Because if I use the screw to hold the narrow blade then I can't put on the skate and it makes it very difficult to use. The blade bites into the wood instead of shaving.
As far as I know it’s not possible to use both the main body and skate when using the most narrow blade. If you’re gouging the wood instead of taking a shaving, that sounds like maybe you’re taking too deep of a cut. Another possibility is that maybe you’re putting some forward & downward pressure on the plane when instead of just pressing forward and allowing the plane to do the work. Let me know what you figure out after some more experimentin’ with it
Thanks for replying. However I am able to get good results when I have the skate but with narrow blade it is a struggle without it. So, it does seem like 50 may not be as good for narrow blades. I am also considering buying a record 044 since the blades look similar, in which case I can ise all my stanley 50 blades with it hopefully. Do you happen to have a record 44? If yes do you know if the blades will indeed work interchangeably?
A question that I have never had answered to my satisfaction is why isn't there a 3/4 inch cutter. I have a more modern version model 12-250 that set up in many ways as this. It works well and I find it useful, but butt ugly.
I have a "new" one, but no rods, and no depth adj, Wood handle/tote, nickel body, japanned center slider "B" for some reason, and the fence is japanned, complete ,I think, set of cutter in their box, exc label. no main box Hole for a adjuster, don't look like it ever had one installed early 46/ 45 rods will work, but too long I think, 46 are shorter on set of mine.
Sounds like it could be a frankenplane. Pat Leach talks about mismatch parts in Blood and Gore though. I have a beading stop available for sale if you want to pick one up
Thanks, I will have to go through all my parts , I have had this for a lot of years, and did a move, one time, so rods may have got lost/ sold with some 45's I sold. at the time.I am at point in life where I am selling stuff off, In Canada. Thanks for the reply. While I am familiar with typing bailey, and bedrocks, never really checked on these.
Love my 50, easier to set up and use than my 45. However, the 45 is more flexible, precise, neater finish, and broader range of cutters. The 50 is a workhorse.
That was an very good cover. I have the 54, which I needed the extenders and you supplied. It's a fun tool to work with. Thanks again MJ for a cool vid.
I was reading up on the 54 as I was getting my stuff together for this video - I guess the primary differences are no hole for a depth stop on the sliding skate, no beading irons, and no spurs? Definitely a collector’s favorite since they’re relatively uncommon.

This is a super helpful vid. Thanks MJ
Awesome. Thank you
Nice! I have never seen one except in books and internet.
It’s a neat little plane for sure!
Thank you comprehensive view of this handy little plane
I’m glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Just bought a Record 50A and was puzzling over the chip deflector so thanks for clarifying that.
Outstanding! That’s what I like to hear. Thank you for watching!

Such a great series. Straight & to the point . Couldn't ask for more. Once again Great Job Mj
Gonna do one on the no55 as the next installment in this series
I’m in England. I have a complete and almost mint No.50 (I’m missing the 3/16” blade) but every thing else is in place. I get regular use out of it too!
Yall seem to have a lot more No50s over there than we do here in the US. I was just checking some of em out on eBay yesterday
Great job M.J . as usual . I've been searching half the world over for the narrow iron holding screw . Side note * From this day forward my best advice to anyone in general will be , " Don't let your Knicker come unstowed. " Bless up !
Sage advice to live by indeed!
your buddy Will from Maine sent me here cause i am looking at no.50's. great video helped alot in knowing what to look for when buying.
Outstanding! Tell Will I said hello. I’ll have to shoot him a text soon
Well done again MJ, I don't have a No 50 however when one comes up I now know what to look for. Thank you.
Excellent! Let me know how it works out if you decide to get one
Dear Sirs,
Thank you SO much as I’ve been hunting for ages on how to set this little plane up!
Outstanding! I’m glad you found it helpful
Thank you! There were several things you explained that aren't in the manual for the Stanley No 50.
Love to hear it!!
Thank you so much for making this. Really helped me with my Stanley 50. Cheers
Great to hear!
Now I want a newer version of No 50.
You’ll find one eventually. Y’all have some great tool meets out there
Brilliant talk through I picked one up today in the UK and now I know it is complete thanks to you good sir including chip deflector and small iron screw and it only cost me £45 or $56.70
That’s a pretty incredible price for a complete No50!
Excellent, informative vid! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks! i couldnt for the life of me figure out how to use the thinnest cutters. Now I know.
That alone makes it worth the time I put in to make the video 🤓
Thanks MJ, Great Informational video...
Happy to hear it!
Great video! I might need to get my hands on one of those!
They’re perfect for small projects.

Agreed on the 044. I don’t have one but I’ve heard good things about them

Gotta love the No50
How does this compare to the Record #50? Is one the copy of the other? Your videos are the cat's meow!
As far as I know, they’re very, very similar. I don’t own a Record light combo plane though so I can’t testify
Basically the Record 050 is copy of the Stanley 50, so identical in use. The Record 043 and 044 are simpler and faster to set up for ploughing grooves, which to me equates to being much more usable.
MJ, I just picked up a late model 50 (wooden handle) from England. Is it possible the chip deflector was built into the frame on later models?
I’ve never seen one built in to a frame but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible

good job. do they make a tongue and groove cutter blade for an Ohio 101 plow plane

My only comment is "where are those type study vids" you get up the years I like and then suddenly its dryer Colorado river in July..... ✌️😉
I probably need to get on that, eh?
@@justplanefun just use the scripts I sent you. And as long as I get a producer credit for my LinkedIn then that's reward enough for me... ✌️😂
I just bought a Stanley 50 from England and shipping is almost as much as the tool.
Sounds about right. I think you’ll be pleased with it! Theyre great little tools
A shaving deflector huh... so that’s what was stuck in my no.50 and not a broken depth stop 😬
I hope you still have it!
Luckily I contacted you for a depth stop or I may have welded it to a bit of spare metal lying around the garage floor 😂
Any pointers how to use a narrow blade here and still be able to use the skate? Because if I use the screw to hold the narrow blade then I can't put on the skate and it makes it very difficult to use. The blade bites into the wood instead of shaving.

Could you sell me an adjuster?
