Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

Such a twist on the premise of a usual talk show, where we often watch "stars" telling flashy stories, trying too hard to make them sound extraordinary. Here we have a story about two actual stars, having the most ordinary conversation ever, and yet George made it funny and interesting effortlessly.

I still get chills when I think about this. The day before George passed away, a friend of mine came to my apartment and him and I played some guitar. We played my sweet lord from all things must pass and end of the line from his days in the traveling wilburies. Afterwards, we talked about George and the Beatles. We both agreed that George was the best Beatle. We ended up listening to some Beatles that night. The next day, he called me up and asked if I heard about George. When he told me the news, I thought he was just messing with me. I looked it up and sure enough. I’ve always been weirded out by that.
If we truly pay attention, our whole lives work in his manner. Good eye brother.
@Captain Sternn another iconic guitarist! I saw Van Halen in 83. I really wish I could have seen them before that. I love Eddie Van Halen. One of the greatest guitarist of all time. In fact, he’s one of the reasons I play guitar.
I had this exact same thing happen with Alan Rickman and Galaxy Quest. Watched it one night and came into work the next morning just raving about how good he is and was, going down his whole career, and my co-worker hits me with the "you didn't hear?" -- I was crushed. :(

Loved the scene near the end of Get Back where him and Lennon are talking about George wanting to release his own music. They were both saying that they could all do their own things, to get out what they need to, but then come back together as the Beatles.... sad that it didnt happen that way.
Peter Jackson was talking to Colbert last night about that scene. He had shown it to Paul McCartney as he was putting together the film and Paul had lamented that he wished he had known about that back then.

IIRC from John Lennon: The Life by Philip Norman, Yoko frequently encouraged John to seek reconciliation with Paul and not be so negative about his own past as a Beatle. She was really only as overbearing and controlling as he allowed and/or wanted her to be due to his own unresolved, deep-seated personal trauma and mommy issues.
As I learn more and more about George Harrison as a person, I like his personality more and more. He was quite intelligent and had a terrific ability to concentrate on his guitar playing and what he said to people. He certainly was not overly emotional or impulsive in his thoughts and deeds.
Probably not a coincidence that he was the one most into meditation and spirituality

What I love about interviews like this which is almost impossible to find in talk shows these days is that nothing here seems scripted. It seems like a genuine conversation, filled with all the awkward pauses that you hear in real life.

All talk shows do pre-interviews, most of the time. They basically outline what the topics are going to be, and rehearse it. Obviously, sometimes they’ll get inspired during the interview and get off topic and improvise. But talk shows today have very limited time, they’re seeking to entertain people, and a conversation like this one wouldn’t sell. Today’s public is too accustomed to gullible and shallow conversations to enjoy a talk show like this one.

@@iainprendergast8311, TBH, I was never a Beatles fan until 7 years ago. I’m 40 now so they’re a generation ahead of me but their music transcends age, race, sex and culture.
George was the primary reason I all of the sudden developed a great interest in them after reading about George.
I was a huge fan of Zeppelin and Pink Floyd growing up. That’s what my father enjoyed. He enjoyed the Beatles as well but as a young man I was captivated by the sound Zeppelin made and David Gilmour is my biggest influence regarding guitar.

I just went down a short Dick Cavett rabbit hole and watched interviews with David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix and George Harrison and all three had a similar quiet, introverted, brilliant, and humble demeanor. They all seemed nervous, too. Really amazing to watch.

In the wake of the glorious Beatles: Get Back on Disney+, I certainly see why George wanted to leave.
You often heard that he was stifled by the great Lennon/McCartney, but to hear him basically say he has so much material that he just HAS to release it, was impactful.
Cool thing about The Beatles is that they left at the PERFECT time, right at the end of 1969---truly children of the 60's. Their popularity didn't wane, they didn't release any lackluster struggle albums, (lol, some of them kept that for their solo careers); The Beatles' Discography is impeccable!

The part that really sticks out to me after watching it is in the studio when Paul says something like " Why are you using that guitar? Isn't the Rickenbacker much better?" and George was just like "I like this one." Like he had to explain himself, or as if it wasn't good enough for Paul......

1. Throughout the MAJORITY of the doc, Paul and John are talking to each other....George tries to get a word in, they kind of acknowledge him, then go back to their convo.
2. Rememba that scene where George tried to play "I, Me, Mine" for John? And john sarcastically said, "You know we're a Rock 'n Roll group?" I mean really? That's coming from the guy who was hellbent on making REVOLUTION 9! Yea, John was being a little jokey, but I feel the tone was genuine and typifies how he (and Paul) just big "brothered" George, and sent him off to play. John even remarked in a way like "Run off now" or something like that.
This doc really helped me see what life must've been like for George.
George was simultaneously a successful and struggling artist---wrap your head around that one! lol
I thought it was great to see them.all really enjoying playing together on the roof. I really enjoyed the Get Back film.

@@danielcarter3928 Actually, Paul was asked why he wasn't using his Rickenbacker bass, and he said it was heavier than the Hofner. That being said, watching Get Back, one can see that Paul was the reason the band split up. George, at one point, is saying he wants to take time off to record his songs, he's ignored. Paul just kept pushing. Look at their post-Beatles careers, John had George and Ringo play for him sometimes, George had John and Ringo play sometimes, Ringo had John and George play for him occasionally. Paul had to start Wings. None of the ex Beatles ever played with Paul again until the Anthology sessions. McCartney is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, nevertheless, he was pushy. In the Get Back Disney+ show, Paul at one point says "You have to achieve something everyday." John says (paraphrasing him), "Paul, that's pretty hard to do."

Imagine suffering 40 knife wounds during a sensless attack in his own home. He survived thanks to his wife.
He was then diagnosed with first, lung cancer in 2001, then , secondary brain cancer and left this world the same year, November 2001.

The papers did say that one wound punctured his lung, but a lot of the others were just as horrific. The man was slashing him everywhere. What many don't know is he released two brilliant solo albums before they even broke up.
George’s ex Patti Boyd wrote in her book how George would come home, after a Beatles recording session, furious because John and Paul treated George like a kid brother. The Beatles broke up in April 1970, and George Harrison release a triple album “All Things Must Pass” 7 months later, on November 1970, with 30 songs on it. Those 30 songs were all rejected by Lennon and McCartney and excluded from Beatles albums. So, George couldn’t wait to be free of the Beatles.
He was the most anxious to get out of the band and "All Things Must Pass" is the greatest post-Beatles member LP to be released IMHO. Love him.

He made the best album top of all of them. “All Things Must Pass” is a masterpiece I advise every late teen to put in the headphones and discover on a cool night going on a walk. I felt blessed to have that experience. It was amazing and beautiful.

All Things Must Pass was a great piece of work but after that his song writing became pretty spotty as far as I'm concerned, but still more positive and musically viable than what Lennon managed to put out. And McCartney nose-dived terribly after Wings.
I feel bad for the late teens who don't get to discover any of the beatles music at that crucial time. I remember when I was 17 and I got some Beatles tapes handed down to me. I would smoke a joint and listen to them in my 1976 Oldsmobile cutlass with the super comfy couch like seats. My mind was blown. And this was in like 2004 lol

Cavett is really good in this interview. He doesn't let it get awkward, he keeps the jokes going, he is able to match wits with George.

George was always my favorite beatle. I never saw this interview, but in brief interviews with the band, George always came across as very genuine, funny and easy going.

I like that George promoted Lennon's "And So This Is Christmas (War Is Over)", a new, then-unknown piece. Now a modern holiday classic.

It didn't make it out in 1971 in the UK due to a fall out around the publishing rights, so it was released for the next Christmas.
He was making a dig on how Lennon "souled" out to Apple records with a cliche of a song, "Merry Christmas war is over".
Harrison was cooler than most people even know.

Let's take a moment to acknowledge Dick Cavett, he did have an artful way of putting fidgety guests more at ease.
I'm a humongous Beatles fan, but I almost enjoy watching Dick as much as I enjoy watching George. Cavett was a expert at his craft and so skilled at interviewing. I miss this style of interview.
George Harrison was a beautiful human being. Had a vision way past this life and was very comfortable with it.

In my opinion it seems like he's sarcastic because he's bored with the Beatles questions. At the beginning of interview he tried to steer the conversation away from Beatles but the interviewer wanted to talk about Beatles.

Up in Liverpool it is sort of in the culture when you visit Liverpool it makes you understand why the Beatles were so funny and witty.
I forgot he was gone for a few minutes. I wish everyone could have grown up and grown wiser with the Beatles. George always was my favorite and his music still is. I know his energy is still alive.
I was just a wee one back then, but George was my favorite because HIS songs made me feel better than the rest, and he seemed like a gentle old soul.

All things must pass - the greatest song never to be a Beatles song...sad in a way as he offered it to the band but the others vetoed it. Great for George that he went on to sucessfully forge his own way and his legend as a solo artist was secured with so many awesome tracks, All things must pass being an absolute gem!
That entire album is beautiful.
George didn't want to include the "All things" because of the "whole live on tv" thingy.
All things must pass double album was incredible. His work with Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, Eric Clapton.. he had so much more to give and thankfully did.
It wasn’t vetoed as the Get Back sessions have now proved. You can’t believe everything you read.
The only person that vetoed it was George.

Dick Cavet was really good at getting George talk by asking leading questions and letting George fill in the rest. Once George started talking, Cavet never interrupted him.
In India, I don't think anyone really gives a crap about being an introvert or an extrovert. They seldom have parties and teachers mostly say just study and parents don't give a crap about all this introvert nonsense their words not mine, I mean no one really understands all this I mean they understand the meaning but they don't understand it and study now or you'll regret later attitude of people also plagues. sometimes I am an introvert reply stop spitting out psychology on me.
Just like when one of my previous managers told me I should speak up more in meetings. I mean, wtf, if I have something to say, I'll say it. If I have a question, I'll ask it. Otherwise I'm just talking to hear myself speak...Oh wait, that's why a lot of people like to talk. I get them now. Sad people.

“Introverts” lol I do not believe anyone who says that.
Such a gentle and decent man. He spent his post Beatles years trying to toss off bricks from his Karma sack. They say he was a true believer in pacifism and in living in the moment. I heard him say once when asked where he thought the world would be in 50 years that he didn't even know what kind of tea he'd be having with dinner that night, so how would he possibly know where the world would be in 50 years. He went on to say if we do what's right in this moment we needn't worry about then. Just such a simply and deep thing to say and believe.
The only problem I have with George is the fact that while he condemned 'materialism', he was, in reality, very 'materialistic'. He owned a number of mansions and vacation homes in different countries, had a fleet of cars, also a number of race cars and travelled the world like a wandering prince. Lennon was the same. He claimed he was a 'working class hero' which he certainly wasn't. He no sooner moved into the Dakota when he spent millions buying out the next unit, knocking down a few walls and doubling the size of his own apartment. He pledged the profit from several of his albums to various causes and charities but never followed through. At least McCartney and Ringo were never hypocritical about their vast wealth. They enjoyed it, spent it and never tried posing as 'common people' although you could say that Ringo was 'common' but he couldn't help that. He was just being himself.
My favorite part of the Scorsese doc was Tom Petty telling the story of hanging out at Harrison's estate and playing ukuleles. "I always keep a few around because you never know when you will need them". What a cool dude
There's different sides to everyone. I read the book Patty Boyd wrote, "Wonderful Tonight " she discusses the affairs George had especially with Maureen Starr, Ringo's first wife. This ended their marriage. She, famously went on to marry Eric Clapton. He also had multiple affairs and drank/used drugs. She pretty much married the same person twice.
@@CR-qp3dc I'm not sure but there may be a reason for George's affair with Maureen. At that time Ringo was drinking heavily and being physically abusive to her, beating her up several times. While that was happening, George began to suspect Patty was in love with Eric Clapton and may have had an affair with him. Never mind that George had already had numerous affairs himself but what was alright for him was not alright for his wife. I think both George and Maureen turned to each other for solace and it quickly became physical.

George once said that he was shy and it was difficult for him to get on stage. He was a super talented musician. I find it hard to believe that all four Beatles came from basically the same neighborhood. Talk about successful garage bands.

There is a word called integrity and another called legacy. If your band is forgotten over the years then it shows that your music never lasted the test of time. If they were talented, creative and constantly learning plus evolving musical artists like George Harrison was, then they would have created new material like George did to his death. He never had to to come back concerts or recreate his old stuff to gain more money.👍✌

All 4 Beatles are/were great conversationalists and very quick-witted. That's one of the elements that made them so great, engaging personalities. No other group quite like them.
Agreed. No other group from that time, save perhaps The Who, had all members who were equally compelling or charismatic. The American groups tended to have a front man who therefore garnered essentially all of the non-music attention.
George's droll humor and deadpan delivery is classic. John was considered to be the "witty Beatle" but I thought George had the best sense of humor.
He personally bankrolled Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' because he liked the script and wanted to watch it in movie form.
George has a great dry sense of humour.

True story about George:
He hired two gardeners to tend to his home. The next day, they arrived to start their work, only to encounter police & ambulances. George was stabbed, seriously stabbed, by an intruder/maniac and was in a stretcher. (When the intruder was discovered, George started to yell, "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna !!" His wife Olivia was also stabbed & possibly saved George's life....)
While George was being led toward the ambulance, extremely bloodied, he spotted the gardeners & waved them over to him. The police allowed them to approach George, as he was adamant about speaking to the newly hired gardeners.
What did George possibly want them for ?.....
To simply ask them, "How do you like working here so far ?".....
George was far from ordinary !! Bless his soul.

When I was a kid Paul was my favourite, then as a teen John now as an old man I realise George was the nicest most well rounded.
George talking about John and Yoko's album was a very sincere moment and neither Dick Cavett nor the Audience was prepared for it. George Harrison carried a very humble soul within him.
Dick Cavett was so skilled. George is awkward and wary at the start, so Cavett admits to his own awkwatrdness and allows Harrison to feel in control. Beautifully done.
Ya, skilled at deception, do you really not see what is being conveyed here, what this whole interview was trying to accomplish. Look, don't be so naive, there is a very basic psychological technique being applied during this interview that people obviously didn't catch back then and it seems it still goes right over their heads today, sad.

George had a great sense of humor. I could listen to him talk all day long.
I'll never forget just before he passed , prob late 2000 I was 17 went into an old record store going out of business. I found All Things Must Pass , and bought it for like $8-10 , went home and put it on my dad's old record player and was so blown away by every song! Since that day It's been one of my absolute favorite albums of all time, George was such a cool guy too without even trying ..
