- 2004 Infinity G35x with a used ECM installed to fix codes P1122 and P1126 (Electronic Throttle Control faults). The used ECM needs the keys programmed for immobilizer codes P1610 and P1611. After programming we find another issue with the MAF sensor.
Here is the closest scan tool to the model I used in this video.

You are right on this diagnostic approach. We are in a flat rate environment. If you have a ECU in hand that would be the path to least resistance. When I have a full log of cars often after spending the initial hour of diag. I move on to the “gravy train” after the workload is behind me my mind is clear and I can focus on the problem child. Even I don’t get it done that day I can marinade over it after hours and come up with a diagnostic strategy for the following day.
I’m glad Caleb is perfecting his skills while also learning auto tech skills. The way to raise kids for sure!
Paul, I am living in the middle east. You are our MAN who guide us in the right way.
Not every one can understand or realize the efforts you are doing to make video in such way. Your camera man Calab must be appreciated for his efforts to produce these videos.
Your son does a great job hope rest of your family are doing well. Great case study had a Cadillac cts with same problem air filter 30 years old 😄😄😄
I highly recommend the Launch X431 Torque and the Autel MS908....from aeswave of course. The folks there are extremely informative and friendly.
Thanks for the cool information on the scanner
I think you and your son do a great job on videos
Thanks Pete for working with them at your shop
It was fun. A bit of your experience came through when after the immobilizer was reset and it didn't run, that you realized it had to be something else. I've never seen (other than in your book) an air filter that bad. I'm not even in the business and I get aggravated at people who don't service their vehicles. Nice video Paul.
Man, I need to get my hands on more Nissans! I saw them so rarely that they still feel foreign to me; makes it difficult to "talk" to them like I do so many other cars.
Your son does an amazing job as cameraman! He seems really eager to learn; that's a trait that stands out these days! Never stop learning, Caleb! You'll always be a step ahead in the world. :)
ANOTHER SCANNERDANNER VIDEO MADE JUST FOR ME.
Thanks Danner, turns out my intermittent timing issue was loose plugs (literally torqued them from maybe 9lbs to 23lbs and issue went away) not being able to ground properly. Fixed that and now chasing random stumble issues (likely related to a coil that was damaged from the plugs) and I'm getting immobilizer codes now.
I LOVE OWNING A 2002 NISSAN ITS SO MUCH FUN
Paul, great and show and tell. We all learn every every day. Automotive is a learning experience. You learn something new every day.
Awesome, Paul - that thing's had a HARD life! I've never seen a filter element in that condition! 👌🏼
Thanks Scanner Danner. For the video learn another things... I keep learning every time i see a new video from you.. God bless you your fam and your lovely mom..
Cool video Paul, you got onto the airflow pretty quick once the immo was sorted 👍 isn't it strange how it's nearly always the basics. Thanks for sharing 👍
Yeah, I kept thinking damage from the accident, which put me in that direction. Then the smell of the exhaust too. I never even looked at the MAF data lol, just got a little lucky with the unplug it test

That car is one mile from heading to the scrap yard. Good vid Paul!
agree!
You would be amazed the amount of crap people keep on the road. If the rod isn't thru the block or the tranny completely gone. There are some that will continue to drive them even if there unsafe to do so
Thank you very much Professor for this valuable information My name is Hasan from Iraq I have learned from you many and greet you from Iraq to my second America and wish you all the best and success and I hope you see this comment
Wishing you the same my friend from Iraq! Awesome....
Great tool Paul!
Wow!! DD in the house. Scanner Danner is like the Gran Puh Bah of diagnostic vids. Been watching him for years. U liked that tool? I am sure u have 5 tools that will do that reprogram stuff
@@billrimmer5596 i have a tool fetish🤣
As a current Nissan Tech I quite enjoyed your video. Keep up the great work !
I work for Nissan and i have an Autel, i did notice the option to program keys in there but i never actually tried it..... I hope i get a key program tomorrow i will be giving it a try this will save me soooo much time having to wait for someone else to finish with the C3+.. Hope it works... Great video BTW.
Darn, I was hoping for stink bugs! Great video, many would have gone after (or replaced) the throttle body after the ECM replacement due to the previous codes.
Matt is the man. He has saved my butt a few times!
yeah hes bailed me out a time or two as well
That scanner looks pretty nice for the security functions. I know my autel is nice for some bi directional controls that’s snap on doesn’t have but I hate the graphing like you said.
Paul sometimes you have a complicated life .but you always seem to get the job done ....
great video can see when doing one job ie immobiliser / ecu then a non start and damage to throw into the mix can send you off in different directions
for sure, I kept thinking the immobilizer was still causing that issue
It could be the pcp valve sucking oil in intake keep up the good work and God bless
Autel MaxiIM IM608 I think this would be the closet one to the auro. Great video as usual.
Autel IM608 is successor, brother, sister, whatever of the Auro. It's basically the same machine, technical bought by Autel and they kept on developing the platform (hugely expanded since Auro, don't know or updates still go for Auro as they do for Im608).
Don't worry about the critics Dan you doing a great job, the best.
With that Used ECM . I think you should have tried the VIN registration that I saw listed in Special Functions.
Awesome video Paul. I love watching videos like this
These Nissan’s often require throttle system resets, also done with the scan tool. May have fixed the original issue without the ECM swap. Issues can be caused simply by unplugging the throttle unit, or sometimes having battery disconnected too long.
if you remember in the video, I had the new (used) module installed, then I re-installed the original computer and it definitely still had those issues with the ETC system. So a battery disconnect and or ETC unplug it test, would not have worked here, but thank you for the tip!
EDIT! Sorry, I misread your suggestion. I did not see a specific throttle reset other than the two I showed.
I know we’ve had some that we couldn’t reset with the Autel tool, but our auto electrician could with their tool (not sure which one they have). Probably not the issue you’re having, but a good place to start for those watching.
Fyi if anyone is needing keys registered check out NDS (Nissan data scan) it can talk to almost every computer in the car and even flash keys! Costs around $50 and supports tons of vehicles
Just wanted to give a heads up you should write the vin from the vehicle into the used pcm. Not that big of a deal unless you have a state inspection station that compares the vin from the tags to the pcm mode 9 data then it may be flagged for potential emission bypass. Great content as always!
Great tip! Forgot about that on this one
Is it possible that the software in the replacement PCM not be emissions compliant for that vehicle? Could that be detected during normal emissions testing?
@@fascistpedant758 It is possible that the used pcm calibration is not correct for the vehicle, However I would expect it to code for a specific emission concern. As far as state emission testing goes I would assume that a basic OBD plug in station would not check for the calibration but a dynamometer / tail pipe tester may fail for gross polluter
Thanks for the video “Paul Danner” lol, that’s why you need more than one scanner. I love my Verus edge but it’s nice to have my Autel Elite to fill the holes. I’ve even used my foxwell 644 for cvt resets. Great example of not one fits all.

Awesome work my brother suck the engine is burning oil too sometimes it sucks to open up that can of worm but as experienced mechanic we go through that good work
Thanks Paul great video ,God bless you and your son too
Continued: all fuses are good - both those under dash but above level of water that caused prev ECM Malfunction, and engine compartment fuses appear fine…this…😊
Thanks
Thanks I like watching your videos and learn a lot from. I wished I knew nissan has backup strategy w/o maf connected, I had intermittent engine stalls. But anyway I'm done with that brand, never again.
Wow my brother that car is a mess I think you was pretty lucky and you are a very good mechanic with lots of experience I would have eventually see that too but never thought about that in that moment I thought of a basic good running Nissan with a swap computer but when you in an accident in a beat up Nissan like that you got to expect anything from it experience is awesome I am at a late age in my life right now where sometimes I just don't want to go through every little scenario to get a vehicle running I've been doing it for a long time as a mechanic in the dealership and also with the NYPD fleet service in New York fire departments fleet service but sometimes you get cars that are really pain in the butt and you try to repair them with your experience but you did well there and you're right most of the time Nissan's do not have backup
Nice video i was going to say when u were going to do the idle re learn before u even touched the intake to get it to temp u could have disconnected the maf and kept it running till u hit operating temp but good thing u looked into it obviously wasnt maintained at all but yeah thats nissan for you those things burn oil and thats all of them all vq35de’s burn oil and their later predecessors vq35de rev ups burn way more oil due to faulty piston return rings from the factory they burn oil but man are those engines strong and put out decent amount of power about 280 stock and all u need mostly is suspension work and wear and tear maintenance and keeping up w the oil consumption and you are solid!
great video mr danner, thank u sir
I have that 1611 code on a 01 maxima. Sometimes car starts sometimes it doesn’t. When it does start I have to try like 20 times
I'm replacing my engine in my 03 Infiniti fx 35. My mechanic think it's just plug and play or would I need to get something reset
Paul, first off your son does a great job. What do people expect from the kid? Secondly, now that you have it running they need to get rid of it. looks it needs a new car run underneath it.
Ideal idle with a factor filter and known good intake boot should be about 650 rpm. A couple drive cycles will correct that though.
Engine temperature was 160 at the end of the video. I bet if it was fully warmed up it would have dropped that other 100 rpm. Thanks for the info!
hi Paul video's like your's helped me to change my profession from locksmith to flipping car's for a living
thank you so much, now i have a curved one for yea....
my wife's car is a v6 1999 accord
i got it a year + ago, was driving fine for a year 6 mouths ago started to shut down mid driving at random, about 2 mouths ago
it was doing so often we stopped using it, now it won't start at all, will crank, no start, engine is getting gas from pump, all plugs showing spark, (i haven't tested the spark timing) the only error showing is a p0420 and i don't think this is the problem.
main relay was replaced, ignition switch was replaced, mas air flow sensor was replaced, none solved this problem, i had 4 other mechanic's look at it to try to find this problem before it has died completely.
i am thinking some kind of electrical problem.
my wife is ready to junk it, but i think i can fix it.
please, please, please help me, and tell me what you think, so i can tell my wife i told you so, and make her car "happy", happy again...
so she could be happy, thank you for all the video's
I had a throttle actuator burn the drivers in the computer. I had to replace both.
Paul check fuel trim u taught me that
Infiniti's have a major issue with aftermarket code readers the best option is using the universal OBDII mode to get the correct data pids displayed
Pretty common problem with Infinity/ Nissans burning out the driver. The electronic motor mounts can burn out the drivers as well.
Is it ultimately being caused by the motor in the ETC system? Or is it just a bad driver design?
@@ScannerDanner My experience tells me the ETC/ Idle air controller,/motor mounts burn it out but the lack of protection on the drivers has been a problem for at least the last 18 years. That is why the customer brought you a computer. I have even sent a couple of computers off to have the drivers repaired in the past.
By Liam Nissan's blessing good job!
hey man i need your help i got 2010 g37 the car crank but wont start got code p0081 p1611 thanks in advanced

Accident?
Shorted or open wires left front area?
good job, good diagnosis...
Is it possible that chunks of the filter got into the throttle body and somehow damaged the computer drivers for it?
I do not think so John, this is apparently a known issue for these models (bad drivers for the ETC system) and there was no debris in the throttle body.
@@ScannerDanner OK, yeah, I didn't think any debris would necessarily still be there. I just wondered if a piece got stuck, caused high current on the drivers trying to move it, and then later got sucked through. I didn't realize it was a known issue on those, though. Good to know. Thanks!

Yo I’m changing my ignition switch, someone shoved a flat head in it broke all the teeth.... when I change the ignition with a new one what all do I need ?
I have a 2009 G37x giving me that same ABS code and I haven't figured out what it means. We also just completed a head gasket job on it and I am also getting codes saying high voltage to the TPS and APP sensor and we can't figure out if it is a short or open in the wire harness or the ECM going bad. We have tried Infiniti's tech guides diagnosis procedure for those codes but it has literally gotten us nowhere. Do you have any idea how we can go about properly diagnosing the issue with this car? We are at our wits end with it.
circuit high codes are generally from an open signal circuit, but because you have multiple sensors setting these codes, you need to look at the sensor ground circuit. I bet you have high volts on the sensor ground and it is because you left a main computer ground off or lose when you did the head gaskets.
@@ScannerDanner sorry for the late reply. Also thank you so much for responding I wasn't expecting it. Normally when I ask anyone questions on here like this they don't respond so I have some serious respect and gratitude for you taking the time to help me with this. I checked over my ground and did find a ground that was a bit coroded that grounds the ECU although it seemed like it was still making contact but I did thoroughly clean it with electrical cleaner and a wire brush. I looked over the rest of the car and everything seems to br grounded in its original place and making contact so I'm not sure what else to check ground wise. I am going to try to start it with the new throttle body tomorrow when it arrives and see what happens. I will let you know what ends up happening. I also ran a self diagnostics check through the Infiniti secret menu that I just learned about yesterday and the ECU says it is fine so I knownthe ECU itself being bad can be ruled out. Really awesome that rhey incorporated tech like that from Airplanes into the thing it helps diagnosis a lot.
How are you doing my brother love your videos hope you're doing fine doing these times I I believe the only way it would stay on is if you reset the throttle body with the foot pedal reset mode even if it's cold if you get it to reset it would stay on and let you do the rest of the diagnostic I have gone through those issues with Nissan's they are a pain to get them to run when you install a new computer or use computer you have to have them relearn the throttle body with the foot pedal accelerator it's a bit tricky with key on key off some of them 5 seconds 30 seconds key on 20 seconds key off 5 seconds I'm doing Clark Kent seems to share your opinion press pedal five times let go and hold for 30 seconds you know what I'm getting to have to follow the procedure in order for the vehicle to stay on
This is the second Nissan i have seen offering a good back up strategy... is it time to reconsider Danner? 😂
(VQ35/37 Motors are beasts by the way)
That throttle will still fail in the future if it's on its way out.
I think that throttle body should be checked and not replacing the ECU
Sweet started up no problems. My bueno. No mas with my 2006 subie sti getting ripped off in ct. Fix and sell Subaru no go
It is no wonder that
The engine worn out and burning oil with an air filter in that condition

The 1 the issue was the car computer to get the car to start? & the 2nd issue was the intake ?
Hey professor awesome video. Nice to know from ur teachings on what cars have a back up strategy and now u can add a Nissan to ur list. 😁. I agree with u professor about graphing scan data better with the snap on rather than the autel. We got the autel elite at the shop and I just got my verus pro last week. Really got it because of the scope to advance my skills better. I'm on ur premium channel but off of the top of ur head which videos do u recommend for fuel pump current ramping and current ramping ignition coils with an inline fuse in the fuse box. I remember u have plenty but finding an exact one is pretty troublesome to find since u have like 500 videos. Thanx professor have a blessed day

You're right there must defend your own especially if it's your son I think of it this way damn at least he's trying to be a cameraman some of these kids you can't get him to do anything
So the impact of the accident caused a good chunk of filter to loosen up and clogged up the Maf?
Very possible that was the scenario. But it was at other shops and someone told him to change that ECM (which was the fix for those ETC codes), so he had other issues
Do you know you to reset the ecm using a paper clip? I have saw some videos for Lexus/ Toyota vehicles where you can reset it because the immobilizer
Looked up your location to drop off the subie to far
Your son does a great job that guy is an idiot love your videos keep them coming
Dude I dig your approach, but there are a few concerns that should be brought up (IMHO):
First and foremost if a customer brings you a part like this they are responsible if it does or does not work, or if it gets damaged due to any shorts/faults (iac motors used to take out the older nissans in a heartbeat). Mopar is really bad trying a swap approach as you can lock out the tipm, IC, BCM, all at the same time. IATN is your friend for validity on this.
Second is that Infiniti had a tsb for the aftermarket air filters disintegrating and messing up the maf readings to the ecu (pcm). I try to do a preliminary inspection on any car, which one is checking the air filter, even on the very hard to get to ones, but I might have done the same exact thing and dove right in. I find a shit tard of stuff in prelims.
Don't take these things the wrong way. I actually learned something about reprogramming a key to a used ecu. Very impressed by that. Always thought you would have to have a NATS code for this. I want to register my shop for NASTF, but the r.o.i. is just not there. Maybe if business grows.
You so rock. You are not a parts changer, but have a realistic approach to this trade. Really liked the one of your 'last' (ha ha) evap diagnosis. Honda? Did'n show smoke, but it showed bubbles! And your gut was right about that one.
I hope you get a chance to come out to CA some day.

agree 100%, I was taking a chance at plugging that new module in without verifying the ETC motor wasn't shorted! From what I learned from the customer (and didn't make clear), is they already plugged it in and verified security codes only and brought it to my friends garage to have it programmed. That was why I really didn't bother to check, I figured any damage would already be done and to be honest, I was short cutting this one a little. My main intent of the video was to show the Autel/Auro capabilities, and then of course other things showed up along the way :-)
Thanks man
Di you ever get an answer as to why he wanted to know if it was new or used? Probably because you may not have to completely reprogram a used computer but definately a new one?
Wish I found this video several months and $1000 in parts ago... I was having the exact same issue. No codes, car wouldn't rev past 3000rpm, eventually it started dying out exactly like in the video. Replaced a ton of shit before unplugging the MAF sensor and starting it and then it ran with no issues. Though my air filter was fine, and the MAF sensor was also fine, so I'm assuming there's some short in the wires and I gotta start probing them :/
You should change the name of your YT channel to Scanner Paul. To avoid further annoying confusion.
