Dont forget Powder had no idea who that man was at that time.
So its not like Powder just easily went to the man who hurt them, because Powder just had no clue. She hugged him because shes having a mental breakdown and very obviously has severe abandonment issues. She's also just a child, who really needed to be held at that time. She also lost everything.
And no matter how you look at it, vi was both wrong and right.
This may not have happened had Vi brought Powder, but her reason for doing so was clearly with good intentions.
The first episode Vi said to Powder "You're ready." And here we see Vi said "You're NOT ready." Which we can see really fucks with Powder.
And yes, Vi had every right to be upset and angry. Of course. And i understand her needing a minute to calm down, but leaving a very vulnerable little girl in a middle of a mental breakdown next to the dead body of their father figure isnt a...great thing to do.
But Vi is also just a child.
Thats what makes it so sad.
    Theyre all just children.

Funny thing is that, in their own way, Jayce and Viktor did the same thing that Powder did. They both disobeyed a wiser and older superior to play with a dangerous thing they thought they could master but neither of them really understood too well. They both played with fire against their superiors wishes. One worked and made them heroes, the other did not and... I wonder what would have happened if Jayce and Viktor had accidentally blown away a entire building and killed several people... The line between being a maverick and a disgrace is very narrow. I wonder sometimes how fair and logical it really is that the same actions can get you a statue or a life in prison solely based on the results...

Powder clearly has attachment issues. She's already lost her parents, and nearly lost Vi moments before, and when she was left by Vi to stay back as they tried to save their father figure, she was already nearly broken. And when she feels she can actually help, and instead loses everything, the one person she has left hates her and leaves her, she reaches out to literally the first person that comes along, as twisted as that might be.
Something that I find interesting is that it was Vi's decisions that lead to this outcome, even when they weren't "bad" decisions per say. She brought along Powder when she wasn't prepared for that mission, and left her to find the most valuable things she could find, which she did, and accidentally caused the explosion. Then she left her with the valuables they did find, which lead to her throwing them into the toxin filled water in fear. Vi when Milo was shitting on Powder said words that were easily misinterpreted by Powde, leaving her feeling more helpless and useless. When Powder showed her the Hextech gems she still had, Vi decided to let her keep them and not tell Vander (which lead to her nearly being cuaght with them which really made the enforcers being on the chase after them specifically, and leaving Vander with nothing to give the Enforcers. And lead to Powder having the stuff she needed to make the bombs work). Vi leaving Powder to turn herself in only reinforced Powders abandonment issue, while also creating the situation which got Benzo killed and Vander captured. Vi deciding to leave Powder behind left her with nothing but that helpless feeling, so she grabs onto the only hope she has of saving the day, the Monkey bomb, which, had Vi just brought her along, she would have never realized what the gems meant, and might've lead to the mission being a success without Powder blowing up the place, killing everyonzhshe has but her sister. And finally, had she not left Vander, at that final moment, and instead took her with her, Powder wouldn't have been broken and alone for Silco to come and take her in.
I don't than any of these decisions were bad decisions on their own, nor do I blame Vi for making them in the first place. Hindsight is a bitch and all that. Butthey set the path for this outcome in the the first place. Lastly, the simplest decision of them all, and one Vander had warned her about, was to not involve herself and her friends in Piltovers business, and had she folowed that advice, none of this would've happened (even the whole Jayce situation). And I believe she knows that, and will hold that regret for the rest of her life...

I agree to all of this. But Powder is a child with abandonment issues. And being abandoned by everyone, especially her sister at the end, she latched onto the first person that came along. That's actually really common in small children that have been traumatized. They instantly bond to someone that they trust now to fill that space. Silco also sees himself in Powder, as he was abandoned and left to die

The infamous third episode. I don't think Powder "hugged" Silco, she lunged at him and just clinged on him. There are so many subtle details in these scenes. You can see that Silco was ready to kill Powder, when she lunged at him, it literally threw him off balance.
And when she said "She left me, she isn't my sister anymore" you can see Silco's facial expression change because in his eye, it is the same as what happened to him. Making Powder a kindred soul to him.
In my opinion they set up Powders reaction very good too. Throughout the show you can see that Powder heavily clings to Vi all the time, always seeking her approval. And she show hints of mental unstability.
So when Vi leaves Powder behind to go rescue Vander, it is quite logical she has a mental breakdown. There is a serious risk that she is going to lose her sister while she cannot do anything about it and at the same time she gets confirmed that she isn't good/strong enough.
At the last scene when Vi hits Powder, the first thing Powder says is "why did you leave me" and not "why did you hit me", showing her being left behind hurt her much more than Vi hitting her.
Basically Powder has build her entire life and identity around her sister whom she idolizes, so it is logical that, when she feels abandoned by her, she feels completely lost andl ashes out.

  • @jayfrancelf
    @jayfrancelf 2 роки тому +180

Remember, Powder is literally a young child. You have to think about it from that perspective. Everyone she has just died and Vi just hit her and left her in the middle of the road with Vander’s dead body. And to her credit, when she saw Vi destroying those Henchmen and holding her own, she didn’t intervene. It was only when the monster showed up and was clearly gonna kill Vi that she actually took action.

You tell your sister to stay put but also you did tell her where you was going.
But anyway you tell her to stay put not thinking would you stay put?
      You wouldn't.
Told her to keep the gems a secret why?

@@lolicongang.4974 if you’re judging her like a leader then you should be giving her the highest score possible. Her plan worked perfectly. She brought the perfect people needed for the rescue. She told Powder they didn’t need her on this one. Vi held the henchmen off. Mylo unlocked Vander’s restraints. Claggor opened the escape hole in the wall. They were free and gonna get away until Powder set off the explosion. So, you can’t say she was being a bad leader when every order she gave was correct. Powder disobeying the “leader’s orders” was what ruined it all.

The reason why Powder change sides "quickly" is because she just get broke at the momment Vi blame her, hit her, and abbandoned her (the person she loves more, bloorelated sister, and basically who always protected her), in fact Vi just walk away to take a breath, but Marcus took her and in the perspective of Powder, Vi just left her there, the series gave us many details of some kind of Powder's mental disorder, in the first episode, when she is singing the song and she sees the enforcers, she saw them like monsters, thats why we saw the scary drawed faces in them, then, whe Vi told her that she isn't ready, we can see a kind of anxiety attack, so... you get the perfect formula, a traumaticed child, abandoned and feeling betrayed for his most beloved person who blame her for kill their family, she just needed someone to hug that would give her support, because at that moment she broke down.

    A) Powder was screwed up by a trauma, her sister had been her entire world for years, and it's perfectly realistic that as a child, she thought that Vi had abandoned her. Had she been older, she would have known that it was silly to think this way, but she wasn't.
    B) Powder didn't know that Silco was behind all that. She had never seen him before.
    C) She needed to hug someone. :D And he was there.
    D) [Spoiler alert] One of the reasons why she would do her best to become Jinx in the following years is her guilt, and in that instant, I think it was the same. She couldn't take it, so she ignored it. I don't know whether or not Jinx has schizophrenia, maybe she does.

She was already traumatized, had mental health issues, saw her parents dead body and her sister and adoptive dad encouraged her to be a thief. She saw her sister getting beaten and wanted to save her. I’ve heard people say it’s Powders fault but I don’t buy it. Latching onto Silco after her sister she tried to save slapped the hell out of her and confirmed her worst fears seems pretty reasonable to me.

  • @n0bleonline222
    @n0bleonline222 2 роки тому +24

(To better understand Powder's character, I'll explain a few background scenes.)
In the first episode we saw at the beginning that Vi and Powder had to endure a very traumatic event in their childhood: the death of their parents on a battlefield. Such events always cause consequences, especially when one is so young. In both of them, for example, we notice a rejection against the world, against the authorities. That they are against the enforcers who killed their parents and act as the oppressors in their growing up is understandable there.
In stressful situations Vi therefore gives in to orders, her anger and emotions, resorts to violence. Powder, on the other hand, suffers from anxious attachment disorder. Her sister is her entire focus; nothing works without her. She runs up to her and pounces on her after she leaves. She clings to her sister because being away from her causes her great anxiety and being reunited calms her.
While Vi has chosen Vander as her foster father, mentor and role model, Powder is different. She never shows the kind of affection or attachment to Vander that she does for her sister. She can exist just fine without him, but she needs her sister. Every time Vi leaves her, it's traumatic for her because it could be that Vi will never come back.
When Vi went off to rescue Vander and left her behind, it had two terrible consequences for her. The first was separation anxiety because Vi was no longer around her and intentionally left her behind, and the second was that Vi essentially told her she wasn't good enough to leave. That phrase, "You're not ready," hit her deeply because it confirmed all of her fears and doubts about herself, that she really wasn't good enough to go with the crew or be a part of their family, and that she was so unworthy. She broke down and began destroying her own creations. *(There is also an important reason I would like to add, her sister and other siblings were literally going on a death mission. Powder realized this.)
As she chased after her, her creation finally working and wanting the recognition from her sister for her abilities that she desperately needed at that moment, she is confronted with the consequences of her successful creation. She killed her family that she wanted to be a part of. And worst of all, her sister got angry at her, hit her, called her "Jinx", the culprit for bad events, unworthy and "not good enough".
You can't blame Vi, she is a young teenager who just lost everything. Vi had to leave the situation briefly to let out her emotions in the void, so as not to expose her little sister to them. Powder, meanwhile, is experiencing a complete emotional breakdown. She has failed again and has not only lost her sister, but her family as well. She is a left alone helpless about 10 to 11 year old girl and doesn't know what to do as her emotional anchor walks away angry and crying.
This also explains why she threw herself at Silco after Vi left her. She was desperate and alone, looking for anything and anyone who would give her attention. She had lost her anchor, she had been abandoned, all her fears were coming true. And the question now is, how does Silco react to this? He is a person who has been rejected by society, who has been hurt and betrayed by everyone. And now someone vulnerable young is lying in his arms and reaching for him. He looks lost and thoughtful. It almost seems that he sees himself in her, someone who has been hurt and betrayed, left behind, worthless to everyone. Instead of what we all expected him to do to her, like a usual villain, he begins to comfort her. He tells her, "We'll show them. We'll show them all.", something she really needed to hear about her abilities, her skill, after such a defeat. We'll see how their relationship develops in the next episode.
[inspired by Georgia Dow's video] ,[and a combination of several people's analysis and my own]

One thing that I've always felt was an important tell into Powder's mind as well, was when Vi hit her, she didn't cry out as to why Vi struck her, but cried out asking why Vi left her, showing that she didn't care about any physical abuse compared to being separated from the focus of her dependency, another thing that can be ingrained in people at a young age unfortunately

I think powder went so quickly to hug Silco because she's like the prototypical example of someone with insecure attachment issues. Vi has been her only stabilizing element, so when that's removed she immediately looked for another because she can't live without someone to fill that role. Edit: Powder also didn't see Silco when she was up there watching Vi fight, so she's unaware he's the big bad guy.

About her hugging Silco, she could only see Deckard from where she climbed. She doesn't know Silco was the one responsible for the whole situation. Even if it seems obvious from context, she's not in a state to be thinking about it at that moment.

Powder's decision at the end with Silco shows how deep her fear of abandonment really is... throughout the first 3 episodes you can see she's slowly starting to fear that her friends are going to get tired of her messing up and leave her behind. And at the beginning of episode 3 when Vi tells her to stay behind, (even though Vi was just trying to protect Powder), you see that fear start to become a reality that made Powder have a panic attack...
Then, in her last attempt to help them and prove herself, everything goes wrong.
So, she was already feeling abandoned and helpless, then has a brief couple minutes after the explosion where she feels happy and proud to have saved her friends, then gets immediately shot down by the realization that she killed them... and to top it all off her sister lashes out at her (understandably) and 'abandons' her for real (in Powder's eyes, because she doesnt know Vi got captured, she only thinks she walked off and didnt come back for her). And Powder was left there in a hurricane of emotions, her sister gave up on her, and her 2 brother figures and father figure are dead behind her because of her... she had to have been scared and felt all the lowest emotions about herself, and was just looking for anyone to comfort her and make her feel safe. I think it was just a children's impulse to cling to someone in that moment and be angry. However because it was Silco you can guess that any attempt Powder has after this scene of trying to work this out in her head, Silco will be there to tell her all the wrong things and keep her believing she's alone and only has him now... and the trauma will never get healed

Powder is 9 years old when she accidentally kills almost everyone she loves, and her sister, "abandons" her. Vi about 16 years old, just walked a few yards away to an alley meaning to regain her composure. She just hit her little sister in shock and frustration, and she is ashamed of her loss of composure. These are kids. The whole point of these interactions is to show how little control they have over their lives, and their emotions.

This is the episode that both breaks and hooks most people.
In regards to Powder, we've seen that she's mentally unstable in this episode and in previous ones. She definitely has anxiety and attachment issues, especially when it comes to her sister, Vi. It's also important to remember that Powder is very young, around seven years old, and has already been through several traumatic experiences. Add on the guilt of accidentally killing her family and her only remaining family slapping her, calling her a jinx, and then 'abandoning' her, and I can understand why she latched onto Silco after he showed her even the smallest amount of kindness.
There is a trope in a lot of shows, where the scrappy underdog character struggles with a skill/power, only to show up at the last minute to save their family/friends, using the skill/power perfectly. This episode plays that trope brutally straight: Powder, a self-taught girl using homemade bombs, encouraged by people in and out of universe to make them work, finally does so. And it's a massive tragedy, because they work **too** well, killing three fourths of her family.
I also don't blame Vi for her reaction; she's been shown to have a quick temper and is more comfortable punching her problems. She's also been through immense trauma in her own right, and she's filled with adrenaline, rage, grief, and all kinds of other negative emotions. So she strikes Powder, both with her fist and her words, and you can see she regrets it. But the anger is too strong, the raw grief too fresh; so she walks away to get some space and try to calm down. Then, when she sees Silco approaching her sister, she immediately goes to try and help Powder...only to be knocked out and taken away by Markus.
It's a tragedy all around, and there's plenty of blame to go around. Or maybe no one is really to blame, and it was simply a product of the choices everyone made.

i highly recommend checking out georgia dow’s breakdown of powder in act 1. she’s a therapist and goes deep into analyzing her struggles from having attachment issues and how that final moment in episode 3 is realistic to her character because of what she’s going through. yes it is frustrating to watch and yes powder is a smart kid but powder has issues and the when some of those issues (ie: attachment issues) are fueled for the one person she truly looked up to, vi, not only confirmed her idea of herself as a jinx, as someone who always messes everything up, but powder was in such a vulnerable and panic inducing and dreadful moment that she couldn’t even think about anything else but vi leaving her and not wanting to be alone! while yes i agree that powders switch to silco was a bit fast it kinda makes sense as powder in that moment was in a breakdown, unable to step out of her current situation that completely isolates you from thinking about anything else so of course when someone she doesn’t know comes up to her she is so high on emotions that all she’s looking for is someone to hold onto because of her attachment issues. i still highly recommend to watch the georgia dow video on powder in act 1 for more clarity on how she is as a character and why her reactions make sense for who she is in those moments.

However, it would be unfathomable to anyone in the Lanes for him to run away while leaving his kids behind. Meaning, they had to go as well.

I always find it funny when I see reactors cheering Powder on and that they believe in her, that she can help everyone. And then immediately change to "Oh my god what did you do?"
That's literally what caused Powder to end up the way she is. Vi has been telling her all this time to not give up and that she's not a jinx. Then suddenly, everyone's lives are in danger, so she does the one thing she can do to possibly help. Yes Vi told her to stay away, but Vi's been telling her not to give up all this time, then suddenly puts on the brakes and completely changes her tone and tells Powder she's not ready to help everyone.
No matter how you view her actions, Powder is a child, and that's what Vander was getting at when telling Vi that she needs to be careful because her actions as the "gang's" leader means she's responsible. It was a lesson she took to heart too late unfortunately.
It will flesh out more by the end of the season, but Powder and Vi both share blame in what has happened since episode 1.

Powder has severe attachment and abandonment issues, starting from losing her parents at a young age, the trauma of revolution, and constantly feeling like the weakest link in her circle.
She totally lost it when Vi told her to stay behind, feeling worthless and abandoned, and again when Vi struck her and left her side at the docks. She clung to Silco because when you're desperate, it's any port in a storm.
But Silco empathizing with her abandonment, in the same way that he was cast aside by Vander, was a genius touch, and his comforting her (unfortunately, the only way he knows how, through vengeance) was one of the first cracks of his humanity showing through even with his ruthless persona.

I saw a few comments about it and assume there will be more, but Powder is like 9 or 10 years old. Vi is about 17. Powder is still literally a child. It doesn't excuse her actions, but she's grown up around violence and doesn't understand the most severe consequences. She was probably about 5 or 6 when she saw her dead parents. Vi even tells Powder that her literal bombs are going to work one day. She doesn't say "You really shouldn't build explosives".
Ultimately, I don't know of too many children that take accountability for their actions. Vi's reaction makes sense based on how angry she is portrayed to be about her circumstances and she's old enough to understand the context of what happened to her parents and now what happened because of Powder.
Powder's reaction also make sense to me because she doesn't do well with being "abandoned" and at that moment, she only knows that Vi abandoned her (she was taken, but Powder doesn't know this). Her parents didn't actually abandon her, but that's probably how her brain copes with the reality her parents are actually dead. Trauma is complicated and not logical.
Overall, I enjoyed the reaction and look forward to seeing you all react to the rest of the show! It's fantastic.

Okay, since I'm commenting on this video a year later, I'm assuming y'all probably know what the premise of #arcane is. Around time stamp: 28:45, when y'all are discussing how frustrating Powder's character is, I get why you're saying that, but she has SO much psychological trauma that in a way, she's unable to think rationally in serious situations out of the fear of being abandoned so she doesn't realize that the extent of her actions could have not so good consequences. Powder's so scared of being left alone, that her fear turns into frantic desperation to help. Out of all the craziness that went down in this episode, finale to the first arc, one of the biggest takeaways has been building since episode one up to Powder crying and yelling at her sister, "Why did you leave me?"
Working in healthcare, I could probably write a book on Powder's psyche alone, but I just thought I'd share some insight.

There is a small nod to this, when he lifts the door, see's Vi, and pauses. There's no maliciousness in his face, no anger...he just seems sad. He doesn't want to hurt her, he's caught up in things way out of his control. I wish they had pushed that a bit more, made it more obvious. Bruh, Powder is a 10 year old child with no parents who has just been through a trauma, do you really think she would be able to act differently in this situation???

I see that utterly destroyed look on Danni's face at the end as she sits in stunned silence... and remember having that on my face after this episode too. I remember cheering Powder on, excited for her to see how her monkey bomb was finally going to save the day... and looking back afterwards like.. how the hell did I ever expect that to work? Just ONE of those crystals blew out the side of a building.. she's using like 3 of them.. right next to the door her loved ones are behind.... HOW did I think it was going to do anything other than what it actually did?
But I did believe... I was rooting for her monkey bomb.. and by the time it dawned on me she done fucked up it was too late.. and that is the genius of Arcane.

Piltover is known as the "City of Progress" and any scientific achievement is something they perceive as "Progress" Heimerdinger being the only one who has actually seen destruction through magic is very cautious with Jayce's research thus the arrest/banishment from research but after Jayce and Victor got it to stabilize and being backed by Madarda the whole breaking in and doing what they did kinda gets overlooked. It is sad with what happened with Vi/Powder and the gang. No one saw what happened happening tbh, Powder thought that Vi left her, why she sides with Silco that fast feeling abandoned. Great reaction! Can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of the episodes.

I get what you are saying about Powder not taking responsibility, but for one she is like 10-12, and two Vi is doing the same thing, she doesn't take responsibility that the whole reason they were in the situation in the first place is because she started a bunch of shit by trying to pull off a job. Vi did not listen to Vander at all the entire first 3 episodes and put them in a terrible situation. Vi is just as responsible for Clagor, Vander, and Mylo's deaths as Powder is.

Sevika cares about their cause, the independence of Zoan, an she sees Silco as a person most who's most likely to accomplish it, and she's willing to die for her cause, that's why she protected Silco.

it still amazes me that powder didn't kill any of the enemies but killed all of her freinds, she could have at least killed some enemies

I feel like Powder only had Vi left and when her last family leaves, she has absolutely nothing left. Then along comes Silco and he shows her an ounce of affection (honest or not) so she latches on for dear life. It was either that or succumb to utter abandonment and in all honesty just dying probably.

The other tragic part besides everyone dying and Powder and Vi fighting, the group all would've made it out alive most likely if Powder hadn't done anything. Claggor got the bricks for them to slide down, Mylo got the last lock on Vander's chair, the door was holding long enough, another minute and they would've been out.
