It's not as simple as Silco wanting to use Powder. When she said "she left me, she's not my sister anymore" Silco saw himself in her. How Powder felt betrayed by Vi the same way Silco was betrayed by Vander. That's why at least to me what he says to Powder after that sounds so sincere and sympathetic... in a bit of a twisted way. "It's okay. We'll show them. We will show them all."
I know right? I've seen a lot of reactor to this show but a lot of them fail to realize this, the answer is glaring at you if you observe.
right!! vander was like a brother to silco so it’s very much a parallel where powder and silco both felt betrayed by their “siblings”

@@Xenithia They were clearly overwhelmed and emotional about everything that happened. Why make such an obnoxious comment... It's perfectly okay to not notice and connect everything the first time. That is also the reason this show is such a good rewatch.

Silco isn't your one dimensional villain. His relationship with Powder (Jinx) is very beautifully written.
That moment where you cheer for Powder's bomb to finally work and then stare in horror as you remember what it is bombs actually do. Beautiful moment. :D
They gave Silco organic character motivation for comforting Powder, which is beautiful. When she says, "She left me," you see a close up of Silco's face as he looks forlornly at Vander's body, as he's reminded of himself. Him hugging her is like Silco comforting a past version of himself the way he wished he could've had.
I love how they handle powder’s character. You can see her breakdown as she’s obviously had abandonment issues since she was a kid. That happens twice this episode, then she leaps into the arms of the first person to be there for her. Brilliant
The complexities of Powder go well beyond that too. But it is impossible to discuss without spoilering because of how much everything interconnects. There is so much stuff you catch in a re-watch you would never notice on a first watch.
The fact that both of her actresses never did voice acting before this is amazing.
And so Arcane really started. I so agree on this being a perfect episode. And 12yo voice actress Mia Sinclair Jenness made one of the best performances I have ever seen/heared. Powders cries haunt me even after having watched this show 50+ times.

It is just amazing how this show gets you into the characters in just 3 episodes. Even for non league player this scene hits so hard. Literally the best show in a while.

edit: you also need to think its a young kid who just killed her friends, got left by her sister (who probably just needed a sec for herself) and then she hugs the first person who came to her because she is just confused, dont know what to do, feels alone etc.
The voice actress for Powder in my opinion did one of the most amazing jobs in dubbing in the last couple of years at least

I think it's easier for this episode to hit harder for non league watchers actually. League players should know Jinx and Vi pretty much hate each other in the future.

Mylo was obviously a dick to Powder but I saw it as a very brotherly type of bullying - I watched this so many times but seeing your reaction when Prez goes "Mylo is so innocent" is the first time I really noticed the expression on his face while trying to help Vander.. now I'm crying again lmao.
Silco didnt take Powder in to use her.
He saw himself in her.
He was abandoned by his brother the same way Powder was abandoned by her sister.
Look at the scene again, When Powder jumps him, saying Vi is not her sister anymore....
All of his emotions, confusion, sorrow, desperaion, empathy, its all over his face before his gaze finally lands on Vanders body.
He very much intended to kill her...
He changed his mind when he felt they were they same.
Yes, when she leapt at him, she literally and figuratively disarmed him.
At that point it could still be a little bit of both
@@zzxp1 Actually, no (or not likely). He didn't think she had any use at that point (something he mentions in ep6 to VI). It really was out of (self-)sympathy.

If you want to know more, there is actually a documentary about the making of the show on Riot's UA-cam. It is well worth a watch,. and I would love to see a reaction of it from you guys after you finish the show. Really makes you appreciate how much of a passion project this show was, and how many massively talented people worked on it.
Agreed. Like every aspect of this show, the music is an intrinsic part of the storytelling.

Arcane is pinicle story telling, one of the best animated shows ever made
Best shows period.
I really don’t like animated shows. But this episode is probably the best hour of tv ever and Arcane one of the best tv shows of any genre.
STRESS: The Episode.
I still remember it like it was the first day. "We'll show them. We'll show them all." And then I was hooked. This show is a masterpiece.
The flashbacks showcasing Vander drowning Silco, it shows a younger version of them. The theory is that Silco used to be a pacifist and wanted to use a diplomatic approach to seperate Piltover and make the nation of Zaun, meanwhile Vander was the hotheaded and violent type, who would go to war against Piltover for their freedom. Vander disagreed with the proposal and it ended up Vander trying to kill Silco. Silco ended up escaping and going into hiding, while Vander led the war on the bridge in episode 1, we then saw how he changed when he saw what happened around him, the two girls he picked up and retreated with after he was responsible of their parents dying, at that moment, he realized that violence wasn't the answer, he turned into a pacifist and took care of The Lanes and the children. While Silco turned violent, he couldn't trust anyone and as he said in episode 2, power doesn't come to those who are smartest, fastest or strongest. It comes to those who'll do anything to achieve it. This also plays on the idea of parallels happening in the series.
That doesn't make sense. Vander explicitly says that the reason he tried to kill him was because Silco was taking the things too far. He got too ambitious and too greedy in his pursuit of Zaun.
"You HAD my respect. The Lanes respect. But that-.. that was never enough for you."
That kid playing Powder... there's neeevvver been a performance like that. Didn't pull any punches. What an unreal show... and the music... whew
This episode is DEVASTATING. I've seen the show three times and watched more reactors than I count. I still flinch every time at the end and get tears in my eyes. Best animated show ever made.
Love the reaction :D watching you guys be so emotionally invested makes it really enjoyable. The only thing I wanted to clarify (if you guys hadn't already heard this from your patreon) is that it's not so much that Silco was thinking he would 'use' Powder, but rather that he understands how she feels. He feels that he was betrayed by Vander (his 'brother'), and he sees that Powder is going through the same thing with her sister. When he hugs her and says 'we will show them all' he really meant it from an empathetic perspective.

As multiple people have already said in the thread, Silco was less motivated by potentially exploiting Powder, than by empathy - here's a few extra details on why (and how densely packed Arcane is with meaning).
When Silco approaches Powder, he doesn't put the knife away - his original intent was to kill them all, and that likely hasn't changed - what use is a small girl to him? But he's wondering where a loose end is - Vi. So, he hides the knife behind him - ready to use when he's done - and asks Powder where Vi is.
.. and this is where Arcane gets masterful in the level of storytelling going on...
Powder, as we see, leaps on him. Silco is utterly surprised - and both physically and emotionally disarmed. (Physically) - The knife goes skittering away, and (emotionally) he looks up at Vanders body as Powder says "She's not my sister any more" - he understands her pain, caused by apparent betrayal.
Cara saying what we were all thinking the whole episode XD Love the lack of filter, feels more authentic then a lot of reactions.
I tell everyone if you watch the first 3 episodes of ARCANE and aren't a fan by that point than you don't real love good writing. This was a masterclass in setting up the story and dramatic tension. The heartbreak at the end when it all goes so wrong is amazing.
Watching people react to episode 3 of arcane should be its own series.

Poor Powder did not 'betray' Vi. She has crazy abandonment issues and PTSD since her parents died. That is also why she went so crazy when vi said she couldn't come. She didn't know Silco, she just saw someone who was there for her after her sister abandoned her. Silco saw himself in her because of how he was left behind by Vander.
It goes beyond that, she also exhibits all the signs of Borderline Personality Disorder from the very first time you see her, so she already had underlying mental health issues BEFORE the PTSD.
@@kenjutsukata1o1 I don't know if that is the case. The first time we see her she is pretty much in a state of shock. I don't think the things she does in that bridge scene give us enough info to think she is borderline at all.

Whenever I suggest Arcane to people, I always say to watch at least the first three episodes and this is why, lol. This episode got me completely hooked and invested. 10/10 masterpiece of a show.
The ending of this episode was probably one of the greatest 5 minutes of...anything, i've ever watched.

Marcus: He and Grayson were told by the council directly to do whatever it took to find the people responsible, the idea that he did what he did "just for they money" doesn't really sit with what you've seen so far.
The Lady with Silco (Not sure if you've gotten her name yet): She didn't betray Vander, she and those that went with her told him to his face that they wanted to fight, Vander as we see turned his back on the Cause and Silco is clearly the one leading it, it only made since that they would turn to him.
There's a lot of nuance to the show.
Once you get done with the series, I highly recommend you check out Georgia Dow, a UA-camr and Therapist that delves into many of the characters, the creators of the series, like you pointed out with Powders breakdown, not only did an amazing job of showing the aspects, but were honest about it, it's not sugar coated in this show.
The other thing I'd say is worth a watch is the official Music Video for Imagine Dragon's Enemy, would wait until after episode 4 to watch it.

This may be my favorite episode of television ever! THE BASE VIOLENCE NECESSARY FOR CHANGE!!! No other words describe everything that happened in this episode. Tugs at literally every single heart string I have! And that song at the end!!

First off, excellent reaction, guys! I am really enjoying your series on this! Now... I am NOT defending Marcus, but I do think it was more than just the money he was doing it for. He clearly has a genuine hatred for the undersiders (which may even be subtly hinted at in future episodes, which I know you have watched by now on the Patreon, so not a spoiler :) ). He was clearly frustrated with how Greyson was handling the situation, not only the deal she had with Vander. Ironically, he ended up making a deal with another undersider, definitely the WRONG one though! I think he is motivated by his career and ambition, but I do think there is something else that going on with him. That being said, YES, he was an idiot for trusting Silco (and not just based on the eye, either XD). The brilliant thing about this show is - there are not 100% good or 100% bad people. They all have honest reasons for the actions they take.
Congratz getting through episode 3! It is always so fasinating watching the scene where Powder is expecting love and recognition from Vi. There are a million different takes away from this scene from reacters (I have to admit, I was 100% with Powder and was furious with Vi here). It is always great to see those that can see both sides of what is a horrific situation. There are so many twists and turns still to go. And P.S - There is so much more to Silco's reaction to Powder at the end, but as you have seen more already on the Patreon, I am sure you already know! :) Can't wait for the next one!

11:58 You said "All her fault". Yes, thats's Powder's biggest fear. In-game there is a demon called Fiddlesticks who is straight up terrifying. He has voicelines that are toward other champions and one of them is "[character name], All your fault, All your fault!" (in a nails on chalkboard + inhaling voice). I imagine you can guess who this one is about.
Hes not just A demon.
He is THE demon, the pirmordial darkness.
Unless my memory fails, he is the source, where every other demon comes from.
He is also the oldest entity in the league universe (or atleast he was when I read his lore).

Did you guys heard those animal like sounds everytime the crystals crash with something or explodes? They are part of a species, a core part of them, it holds their memories and experiences. So, when they explode, all those memories and experiences are lost, thats why you can hear them screaming, they are dying.

This show is as masterpiece. Honestly one of the best shows ever made.
IMO, Silco takes in Jinx because she feels betrayed by her sister just like Silco did about Vander and in that moment he sees himself in her and decides to spare her. I'd guess that in general, mob bosses aren't in the habit of randomly taking in any kid, if all he wanted was a kid he could mold there are probably thousands of orphans in the undercity who would have done just as well.

There's no IMO about it. That's just the actual fact.
I can say that they reacted as I expected them to, but it's not that the series wasn't going to give you clues about what was going to happen, but rather that everything happened exactly as it should but it didn't turn out as it should, neither on one side nor on the other on Vi and Powder but Jace and Victor's, I already mentioned it before "Everything in Arcane rhymes" and the positions are not absolute or definitive, if it had been a Disney-style series as soon as they escape Vander dies in the collapse, Powder is hit and has amnesia while Vi and the rest are arrested by Marcus, but instead we see a breakdown in all of them, they were so close to achieving it that the result does not seem fair or salvageable and ends in the worst possible way. Two sisters are separated in tragedy while two enthusiastic young people join in progress, the doors separated both of them from their perdition for some death and others exile, Vander makes the decision to fight to save lives when he had decided to stop doing so to save lives, he turns back on a bridge to save Vi just as he did in the past on a bridge too, Silco drowning is the spitting image of Powder falling, himself being hanged by Vander is the image of Powder in the hands of I saw, both cities lose their defenders Geayson and Vander who kept the peace between everyone, Marcus receives a payment stained with blood just as he himself said that those coins in the rails are the product of crime but now one of which he was an accomplice, a city plunges into darkness and the other embraces the light. The impressive thing about everything that has happened so far is that we are only going through 3 episodes and there are six left, being infinitely better than the others where we see characters that do not have even half the development or empathy towards the viewers that they have twice as long.

I've probably watched this episode close to 60-70 times now. It amazes me every time how beautiful it is. Absolute perfection on every level. No other piece of media has moved me to the extent that this episode did. The next episodes in the season also further polishes this masterpiece. Giving more meaning to lines, seeing the consequences of the episode play out. The ripple effects it has for the entire story. Glad you're watching this. If you haven't already finished it, do enjoy the rest of the season!
Enjoying the reactions. I think one of the most interesting decisions they made with arcane was the release schedule, and how that effected the storyboard. They dropped 3 episodes at a time with a one week break between each set of 3. I think that this is lost on viewers now who just see it as 9 episodes of a single season, but it really came out in a way that felt like 3 movies. You got the first 3 ending with this episode, and then had to wait a week to find out the next chapter.
It holds up whatever way you look at it in hindsight, but if you're interested in the pacing between episodes, this helps explain it. Each episode feels like a complete piece of the story, but each set of 3 is also a complete story under the larger narrative of the season. It really speaks to the dedication and care that the writers put into this work of art.
Silco isn't using Powder, he could've killed her, but he chose not because he sympathized with her.
You can sympathize with and use someone at the same time.
@@heyySandmann She literally at that point had no use for him whatsoever, and he was planning on killing Vander & "His Kids" and making it seems that Vander fled town. So forsaking powder was in the moment because she surprised him with that hug + the crying, he saw himself in her and decided to take her in.
That's why it wom 4 Emmy,s and a multitude of other awards
Arcane has a magnific art and story, this is how a good show doesn't has fear to reflect bad and good things about a character.

Looking forward to seeing you guys experience Arcane for the first time. When Arcane came out, it was released in 3 sets of 3 episodes scheduled a week apart. The cliffhangers were stressful and the wait agonizing. It's one of the best video game adaptations and shows in general to come out in the past few years.
How do you know Marcus did it for the money? Silco literally said "the deal's changed" while throwing him the money bag. The money can be part of the change too. Marcus hasn't really shown any greed before and he didn't act like he was happy about the money after. I think Marcus wanted to do right by Piltover and arrest the kids whatever means necessary.
I do believe Markus has good intentions and wants to protect Piltover but hes also a dumbass which is why everyone hates him
I love how EVERY reactor, when Powder set off her toy: "yes! it better work", then, minutes after: "ohhh Powder, you killed everyone"

I always watch reactors when they get to that one particular "Violet!" that powder screams. 25:03 It's so hysterical and real that it breaks your heart. Looks like it got to you too.
You seem to have mistaken Mel (the beautiful black lady) as the Head Councilor but it is actually Professor Heimerdinger (the small furry creature) that is the Head Council. If you recall Jace's trial the Professor was the one who started it and was the one who handed down Jace's sentence.
Cara might be the most involuntarily emotive reactor I've ever seen.

It gives you everything you wanted to happen but then powder appears to jinx it all and flip the script while stabbing you right in the heart

The thing I love is how the camera moves back on that final shot and it's from Vi's perspective being dragged away and witnessing Silco comforting Powder as she looses consciousness and her head slumps to the side.
Hey folks, so glad you're on board with this absolute gem of a show.
Quick note about structure: Arcane is in three 'acts' of three episodes each. They each tell a story, but also run the overall narrative. So watching ep's 1-3 more-or-less together is the proper way to do it, from a plot perspective.
One other impressive note - the animation in this is not motion-captured, but all keyframed. Utterly amazing.

This episode STILL breaks my heart...
And in Vis defense after all that...yes it was wrong hitting powder...but girl just legit needed 2 minutes. Soon as she saw powder in danger she was right back on the scene. Tragic.
Right. If you watch closely, you can see the moment Vi realizes she’s hurting powder and removes herself from the situation until she can get a handle on things. She was never “leaving” Powder. Of course, it looks very different from Powder’s perspective.
Vi is still pretty much a child herself. She’s someone whose first response is usually violence. And Powder is not the only one with unprocessed trauma.

But the sad thing is marcus was also right. If Vi had ran out there she would have died. End of story. It was just legit kids messing around in grown folks' business and paying a heavy price. They didnt belong there. All the good intentions. And as a viewer its not like we were wanting powder to stop. We sat there cheering her on. Hoping for her to get her moment. And she did. But...

Unfortunately, to this day I haven't found anyone who has paid full attention to the lyrics of the final song... and those who come close to this tend to relate the song to Violet instead Powder.

Fun fact: Jayce has a scar on his cheek for the rest of the series where the glass shard hit him in this episode. A little detail I like.
Also, just thought of this for the first time: Deckard's more of a badass then I ever gave him credit for, he went toe to toe with Vi in the first episode and we see in this episode what a beast she can be, so he must be a hell of a fighter.
Actually I don't think ke knew about her skills in the first time. And without gauntlets she couldn't take these people so easily
@@mishan3168 I was referring specifically to the fact that he held his own in that fight, not that he started it in the first place. He got quite a few good hits in, that first punch to the side of Vi's jaw would have knocked out a lesser fighter. Sure, she could do better with the gauntlets, but so would Deckard. If they both had gauntlets, they'd be a pretty even match again I reckon.

25:50 You gotta remember that Powder has no idea who Silco is or exactly what part he's played thus far. She just knows that Vander was captured and taken to this old building, and followed Vi & Co. there.
Although even if she did know, its easily explained by Powder's INTENSE abandonment issues that are affirmed in the worst way when Vi hits her, curses her and leaves her...Vi is essentially her safe place. Her protector. Her guardian. With her gone and everything Powder knows being destroyed (by her own hand), embracing the first soul to come to her side is not just believable, it's almost inevitable. She didn't flip - she found a new anchor.
You could say that it's SILCO who flips in this scene. He begins with the intent to deceive and murder Powder...but seeing her like this and hearing her reasons...they actually resonate with him. His embrace is genuine, even if he is a sinister dude.

Marcus saved both Vi and Powder's lives by kidnapping Vi.
Had Vi gotten back to Powder, Silco would've killed them both.
Vi will never forgive or accept Silco, and never make peace with him. Silco knows that. Powder will go along with whatever Vi does, especially if she'd come back for her like that. So Powder couldn't be turned, either. And if she witnesses Silco kill Vi, then Powder herself would be consumed with revenge against Silco.
Silco then has no options but to kill them both to prevent them from becoming trouble later.
This way, an abandoned, broken Powder triggered what little sympathy and compassion Silco had left inside him, and he chose to protect her rather than destroy her. Silco's been betrayed before, abandoned before...hurt before. He knows what it feels like, and seeing it in the eyes of this helpless girl...reminded him of that pain. And he won't stand for it. He'll make her strong, so that she won't ever have to feel it again (in his mind).
"It's okay. We'll show them. We will show them all."
