Considering the speed of the Churchill, it's amazing it out ran any infantry at all.
Seen Jagdpanther and clicked so fast.
Maybe if you're good, you'll get a new mouse for Christmas.
New maus?
No wonder the Germans ran out of resources, they were clearly spamming gold ammo.
The advances in tank technology from 1939 thru 1945 are absolutely mind blowing.
This story seems to be typical of a lot of tank engagements in WWII - heavy German armour inflicts high damage but then they abandon their vehicles for relatively minor reasons because they lack support. Truly, logistics wins out in warfare - but few want to read a book on that over a book on heavy Panzers!
The fact that you pump out videos with absolute quality everyday just amazes me. Keep up the work.
It's an indication of his incredible dedication, research, and intellect...

It's funny but the Churchill tank is visually a lot like Churchill himself.
I feel it should be pointed out that the 8,8cm gun on the Jagdpanther and King Tiger was not the same as the famous 88mm, the one that is usually seen in the tall multi-purpose mount with a large rectangular shield, or on the Tiger I. The latter was the 8,8cm Flak 18, 36 and 37, with the Tiger mounted one being the KwK (literally tank cannon) 36, all these guns maintaining a 56 caliber barrel. The gun on the Jagdtpanther and King Tiger on the other hand was never a multi-purpose gun, but was only built as an anti-tank gun (the Pak 43) or a tank gun (the KwK 43), and had a significantly longer 71 caliber barrel. The KwK/Pak 43 also fired a much more powerful shell, measuring 88mm by 882mm in length, compared to the 571mm length of the Flak 18/36/37 and KwK 36. This meant that the Tiger I's gun would achieve a muzzle velocity of about 820 m/s, compared to about 1130 m/s of the Jagtpanther/King Tiger's gun.
For comparsion:
The Tiger I couldn't penetrate the Churchill VII's frontal armor (hull and turret) at almost any range (when firing APCBC), while the King Tiger/Jagdtpanther could penetrate the frontal armor of a Churchill VII at 2 kilometers. The tanks engaged here were Churchill IV's, with barely half the armor of the Mark VII's, so these Jagdpanthers at these ranges were probably able to blow holes straight through the entire tank (if the bursting charge in the shells didn't go off, of course). The KwK 43 was the most insane tank/anti-tank gun deployed during WWII, and probably one of the most, if not the most, powerful anti-tank guns for firing regular (non-saboted) ammunition ever made.
Žiga Auer Awesome information. Thank you. There was a lot there I didn’t know that I didn’t know. You learn something new every day. Thanks again.
Emprahs Finest Well not much except that the KwK 44 was the 128mm gun on the Jagttiger, the Pak was the field gun/anti tank gun version. Had a much shorter barrel, and not as much propellent (relative to the shell diameter and mass) as the Pak/KwK 43, so the muzzle veocity was much lower, around 950 m/s. But the main problem with that gun was simply that the field gun version was stupidly heavy for AT use, needing the heavy Sd.Kfz 8 or 9 halftracks to move them, which were already needed for moving the heavy artillery, and this resulting in them being cumbersome to deploy in a fashion thats necessary for AT guns (eg certain flexibility and ability to react quickly to changing battlefield situations)
The other use was the Jagtiger, which was just a mechanical mess. So in essence the gun was never really succesfully deployed, even though it did put even the 8,8/71 to shame, especially at long range.
It was the magnum version of the old 88, same caliber, but much more propellant. It was the German equivalent of the post war British 20 pounder or the Soviet late war 100mm that equipped frontline tanks like the Centurion and T-55 and regarded as excellent until the 1960s.
@@ChaplainDMK Thanks for the detailed information. Very interesting.
Where do you get your figures from? The frontal plate armor of the Hull of a Churchill was between 102-152mm FLAT.. no angle. The Turret 89mm to 152mm front, again FLAT no Angle. The 8.8 cm KwK 36 using the following respectively. Pzgr.39 (APCBC) @ 2000m can penetrate 83mm at 30* degree angle and Pzgr.40 (APCR) @ 2000 m can penetrate 110mm @ 30* degrees of angle. Thomas L. Jentz. The figures are even better at closer range, and although the Churchill has massive armor.. its flat, one flaw the Germans corrected with the Tiger I to the Tiger II. Panzer Mark IV could knock out Churchill's on the flank with relative ease.
Virgin Churchill against Chadpanther.
Nice!
10 virgins got penetrated with that pak43 that day XD
The Churchill was an infantry support tank, which was a role it did surprisingly well and of course a platform for many 'funnies', the Jagdpanther was a specialised ambush tank killer, in an engagement like this the result was not unexpected.
"Alright lads, staff meeting. Round up the tanks. First order of business, we need to address why I hear boss music."
That jagdpanther in the beginning was beautiful.

I have a book on Tigers in which the author, a Churchill tanker himself, describes how confident they were in their thick armor when they got to North Africa, until they saw some Churchills that had been shot full of holes by the new German Tiger tank. "The Tiger Tanks" by Peter Gudgin.
The Jagdpanther was a brilliant machine that had amazing potential. The only problem was it was introduced far too late in the war to have any real impact.
To us it wasn't a problem ....to us it was a miracle.
Although on paper the Jagdpanther appears superior to any of the previously mentioned versions of self-propelled 8.8cm Pak43, it was the thinly armored moderately powered Nashorn that proved to have a significantly more effective combat history. Nashorn formations had higher kill rates and lower losses than either the Elefant or Jagdpanthers. In addition, their reliability stood head and shoulders above either of the heavier armored tank destroyers having on average 85% operational at any given time compared to the Jagdpanther's average of 53% or the Elefant's lowly 37%.
Who needs mainstream TV when there is this to watch instead?. All these videos by Mark Felton are first rate. Personally, I can’t get enough of these videos!.
did you do it? Having a Jadpanther?
yes...
What did it cost?

Ah the Jagdpanther, a personal fav of mine. Gonna be a great vid as always
Funnily enough I thought the exact same thing without even pressing play .😁
Me too, it has a good gun, and ideal for ambush
I love it as well. Perfect balance of everything for ambushes. They should've never charged through!

It looks so freakin' cool, I love the design
Jagdpanther: Kills entire platoon
Tracks: No U
Jagdpanther vs. Churchill = Probably not a good time for the Churchill.
It's more complicated question. It's the same situations as at eastern fronts. Germans had too few and too varioius panzers compared to the allies. The numbers of shermans, churcills and T-34's overpowerd the nazi panzer, which didn't have good logistics behind them. Nazis were too fond of engineering and trying many versions compared to the massproduced allied tanks. It was bad leadership from the german side.
Yikes!
Love your stuff, just one suggestion, when you show a map could you highlight the place your referring to?
The Jagd could literally reach 50 kph
yes those static maps are not oriented well and a more automated map would be pleasant to understand in the brief viewing period.

I actually found a blueprint for the Jagdpanther II the other day, and must say it is damn beautiful, even if only on paper.
Like, actually found it in physical form?
+ P K
Unfortunately, no. I wish that was the case. I actually found it online while browsing for something unrelated on Yandex using its reverse image search. Between Google and Yandex, the latter usually has much better images and much higher quality too. Much of my more unusual or rarer finds, I found on Russian sites--some of which were dodgy, yes. I wish UA-cam had a feature that allowed me to upload images. I could upload it to Imgur and provide a link if you'd like.
I sorta prefer the Jagdpanther I, I think the Jagdpanther II looks really rest heavy
Really? Where?
Is it the real thing or just a replica?
Mark Felton episode comes out
Me: I AM SPEED

@uncletigger The Panther could reach a top speed of nearly 50 KM/ph or about 30 Mph.
That is a very decent speed for a WW2 tank.

I was watching a documentary about the Grenadiers (mainly because of the band and I'm a trumpet player), and they were training for their performance in front of Buckingham Palace. Then one guy said, "We'll march for the queen and her guests, and then quickly back to the barracks. Our flight to Afghanistan leaves tonight." And it was then I realized that these funny looking dudes (I'm an American lol) stomping around the palace, actually go serve in combat. And not only do they serve in combat, they're seen as some of the best of the best in the British Army. It does make sense that the Queen would have her greatest units defending her. Greetings from across the pond!
Sounds like that lad needs a refresher course in OpSec.
destroy a whole tank, which in 1940 times were made basically "fully by hands" due a track damage, my god, that's a pain. Specially if we are talking of a Germany that in late 1944 was with low ressources and every single vehicle was important.
PS: I loved your video, very informative, thank you for posting and greetings from Brazil.
This is what happens when the Germans don't have support&maintenance units to repair tanks
They didn't have anything big enough to tow them & from what I've seen on other channels, overcomplicated engineering meant field maintenance was very time consuming or even impossible. Lucky for the free world they couldn't get their act together.
Most Jagdpanthers were lost to technical failure than to combat!
Also the design with the wheels overlapping each other..had to remove more than one to repair lol...what's the German word for #$%^#%^%#^?
Kurdiatcha Man fritz what’s ze state of ze transmission? Zits what! Hans fetch za Luger!

That footage at 3:05 has to have been sped up. I can't imagine a Churchill going that fast.

Looks like it is. You can see it on the exhaust smoke.
I wondered about that too. Looks way faster than 15 Km/h to me.
@@bv5998 Neither can War Thunder players. By the time you get into battle, the game has already been decided.
and this is how the British won the war; ten tanks in 2 minutes.
Thanks for adding "polish" many forgets about this forces.
Thanks Mark and greetings from Brisbane, Australia. Thank you so much for producing these excellent videos, they are so informative and provide a lot of detail on military matters that most of us were never aware of. Please keep up this fine work Sir, your subscribers all appreciate it.
A fascinating video and really thoroughly researched. Excellent! I did notice that the marching guards at 2:14, captioned as 'Scots Guards', were actually Welsh Guards, although the band leading them were Scots Guards. Grandad was a WO2 in the Welsh Guards and would have hated to have been lumped in with the Scots!
The Jadgpanther was so rare that only one short snippet of German film footage of jadgpanthers on the move exists from WW2.
God I love the Jagdpanther such a powerful design. Awesome vid as always!
>well equipped
Literally had no fuel
>Brand new state of the art machines
Too big and over complicated to do quick repairs on the battlefield
Mark, as always, well researched and well put together video. As a WWII history buff, I really enjoy the bits of history you post. Greetings from Mexico Amigo.
You are leaving us "hanging" for the next story.
Well done Dr. Felton!
Never seen so many Churchills in a video, I own a Diamond T 980 prime mover which coupled to the Dyson trailer were made specifically to transport the Churchill tank as nothing else at the time was weight rated at 40 tons.
Thanks as ever for sharing.
German military and German vehicles were so beautiful. I come from Poland so I have some animosity towards the Germans of course, however I see beauty where I see beauty and it's beautiful in their stuff.
ahhhh
the Jagdpanther
another one of my favorites
thanks Mark .....
I built a model of a jagdpanther some years back. Every time I see or hear of them in action it makes me glad I have the model. I minored in history in college and sometime wish I had Majored in it. Your videos are not only informative, but very interesting as well. Thanks for another great video
These stories are absolutely EPIC.
just imagine the horror of seeing one of these Jagdpanthers while siting in a churchill or sherman and knowing that if it sets its sights on you, you will most likely die, just like that and there is nothing you can do about it, truly terrifying in my opinion.
Built a beautiful Tamiya model of the Jagdpanther in the '70s, one of my favourites!
Dear Mark after watching a lot of your videos, I took my family to farnborough fast museum , which you mentioned in your videos as a place where British used to asses airplanes, simply great museum highly recommended, lots of passionate people, would love to spend there all day, but with two year old son it’s quite difficult, although he loved running around and switching on rotor blades on display, keep up with your productions , they are very interesting and you just can’t stop after one video, kind regards
Those German tanks are absolutely frightening, I’d shit my pants if I saw one engaging on battle
The Churchill at 3:30 is a Churchill mk7 with 152mm of armor on the front of the hull and 95mm on the side of the hull and turret
The allies was a total air control, that had made the real difference.
Zunino Point taken, that had made the real difference. What about if the Germans didn't have an eastern front? that had made the real difference.
Glad to see you didn’t include paid advertising within the film
Yeah, he is one of the rare ones and i love it!
Why? The man's gotta earn a living
As an old US Army tanker, I really like your Tank on Tank stories, Thanks Mark :)
Great video as always.
Having the element of surprise is a great factor in winning the battle. You can pick the moment of combat. An example is the M88 Greyhound that ran behind a Tiger tank and shot into the soft rear.
"Soft":80mm
Many people appreciate your videos with their pretty high production values and clear narration. Please can you do more longer ones, I like to settle down for about 90 minutes to these documentaries. many are too short with dramatic music and American voices. Cheers to you
Most videos on UA-cam I only actually listen-to, while playing computer games or working on projects.
Yours are so rich in well chosen footage and photos that they are just about the only videos I actually watch.
Thank you always, for such excellent content!
Love the way he puts the sound effects in the video just to make it more lively!
When that intro music starts I always get goosebumps
Another of many phenomenal videos from Dr. Felton.
Had they continued to build the jagpanther in large numbers and improved along with the e-25 models. They would have dominated the battlefields.
Always thought that Guardsmen would make bad Tankies due to generally being 6 foot +
Bremer's Ghost :- Good comment.
The Soviet tank crews were all small men, though I don't think the same can be said for the German crews.
They tend to leave the old bearskin hats off which helps. Though thinking about it now you have to wonder what the Germans would have made of it. Hans, I can see the British tanks and it look like they are being driven by bears.
Good job the guards of Frederick the Great did not fight there. they would have had difficulty getting inside the Maus.
Having sat in a church as a 6+ft man, trust me, they'd fit. Those things were roomy as hell compared to soviet tanks.
Guardsmen come in all shapes and sizes. Tallest on the Right and Left Flanks with shorter Guardsmen in the middle. I was 5, 10” and was in the middle lol
@@Shloomy_Shloms and then the tanks with brass band appears...
Mark another outstanding effort , you never cease to amaze , bring it on !
Wait so they were 10 klicks ahead of their infantry support, were discovered dismounted, received incoming artillery fire for ten minutes, followed by a two minute armored thrust that culminated in the destruction of ~80% of the unit...and they advanced to capture two of the three Jagdpanzers? Incredible.
"....while I'll be taking...THE JAAAAAG.." Jeremy Clarkson.
I really like that clip with all those Churchill's driving down.
Thrilled to discover this channel. Fascinating videos and wonderfully done. A real gem.
I think this is a great history tank Lesson about german gen 3 tanks that they are deadly in the battlefield but are really bad outside of the battle, and thats what most people forget about tanks. You did an amzing job on this video
You can have the biggest gun and the thickest armour. But you lose a track and that's it.
@@bigblue6917 ja shit the transmission is dead
Hence why many tank crews that spend 1 hour of operations can face 3 hours of maintenance
@@bigblue6917 well the jagdpanther was known to also have the speed. so good gun, speed and armor

See Mark Felton... subconsciously click to view... just know whatever it's going to be worth watching everytime 👍
Great video and commentary. One quibble - the massed group of Churchills going down a hill at about 2:00 and the end are very early models, probably Mk2's with the 2 pounder gun. Pretty sure any Churchills used in France after Normany were Mk3's and Mk4's (in additional to the 'funnies') Footage of the ill-fated Dieppe raid shows Mk1s, Mk2s AND Mk3s littering the beach, but that was well before Normandy.
My favourite WW2 tank, the Churchill, I had a toy one back in the 60s in a game called 'Tank Tactics' Great channel by the way.
will never forget the first time i saw 'Band of Brothers' ep4 when the JagdPanther popped out - my jaw dropped and shattered
no shit that was cool! loved that part! i would've shit my pants
The Jagdpanther that was disabled in our village of Hechtel-Eksel in Belgium is the one in the Royal Armouries in London. Thank you for the video.
These videos are so informative. Thanks very much Mark. Much appreciated
the jagdpanther was the equivalent of the german uniforms. sleek and sexy
Yes almost as sexy as uncle Adolph only the jagdpanther had a real canon....
Another awesome video, thank Mark.
Can you please do a video series on how Germany reused captured Allied and Soviet tanks during WWII? I know they actually used operational Churchills captured after the Dieppe raid in '42 for various purposes. What they did with captured French tanks was really cool.
The Germans actually wore captured French underwear in Russia. There were huge storerooms full of it when France fell. Stacked at least ten feet high I seem to remember.
Didn't Mark release one only recently on captured Shermans?
well tehy basically used whatever they got cause they desperately needed it
spacewurm the Germans thought that the Churchill was something left over from WW1 and considered it to be obsolete equipment.
Glad I found your channel. I’m a huge world war history buff and your content is awesome!
Once again, a very insightful, well-down video. Many thanks you for posting. I will continue watching.
Perfect timing just finished and my favourite German tank video.
And in normandie a place I recommend anyone to visit if your into
Learning about the second world war. Excellent again and again 😁👍
You speak german words very
accent-free, which is very rare. Gute Präsentation ;) !
Doctor Felton, this is why I admire this channel so much. You give the complete picture. The good, the bad, and the ugly, and this was ugly. Yet, very few accounts of this brief skirmish exists anywhere! Most accounts of the 6 June, 1944 operations make it appear that the Allies simply marched in, drove through Europe and forced Hitler to kill himself. No swear. Yet, your channel pounds the viewers back to reality in that you present the truth in all of its details, or as much as you can dig up!
This channel is really something. I have shared many videos on other social media and history channels and people are very inquisitive as to you and your channel. With only 381,000 subscribers as of today, this seems like you should have two to three million. What can we do to make this happen?
Also, thank you for the quality that you are bringing out in your accounts! Nothing kills me more than a great story and very poor or non-existent graphics or images. You clearly have a mind and heart for this!!! Thank you for this!!!!!!!!
Your videos stand above the rest, if not in most respects, just for the sheer fact that you respect the phonetics of German military terminology. I can not stand the utter abysmal attempts made by many narrators of otherwise potentially awesome documentaries trying to use German words. This is especially intolerable when it is essential to get the word correct when certain German words are necessary due to the untranslatability of words that makes sense to the average English speaker without a descriptive explanation. Top notch work sir, as always.
LOVE the sloping silhouette design, just beautiful all over !!! Easily my favorite German panzer !! Only 15 deg. of barrel traverse was available, you had to point the whole tank at your target which could be 2 km away. OK in a "ambush" defensive position, mainly to halt the Russian onslaught that was descending on Berlin from the east. In 1944, the Germans didn't have enough production resources or time to make more rotating turret-design tanks.
As always, german tanks don't die because of the enemy, they die for themselfs
Yes enemies can't do anything against them
They die to inexperienced and demoralized crew who were readily abandoning their vehicles at the first sign of mechanical problem.
Some good examples of poor military education and fantasising about WW2 German tanks. Probably down to playing too many computer games.
no shit
@@jinglejangle3287 they don't need to, it's far easier just to kill the enormous and delicate support structure that those excessively complex machines required.
Mr. Felton, your videos are outstanding. Thanks for all of the research and work that you do in order to bring this amazing historical info to all of us. You are truly appreciated, sir. As you see mentioned under so many of your videos, your knack for bringing us the near forgotten stories is absolutely brilliant. Thank you! ---from Northeast Pennsylvania, USA

I'd love to see you do a top 5 tanks at the tank museum. Great vid as always
Good action by the Panzer Jaegers!
Great vid! Well done Mark Felton!
As always, great and thorough content! Thanks for the post!
Amazing that the Germans seemed to know about the British love for “O” groups and when to take advantage of them. BTW, the Germans were undoubtedly planning to recover the Jagdpanther and thought it was far enough in their territory not to worry about it falling into enemy hands. If you’re in direct contact with your headquarters you request an artillery tractor or two to recover the vehicle. If that doesn’t work out, the same company would have its own vehicles take it in tow. The NCO responsible was most likely attempting to make such an arrangement when the crew arrived telling him they had to make a run for it because the British suddenly arrived.
Yes, that's probably good thinking. When you've given the opposing forces such a hammering you wouldn't imagine they're going to follow up so quickly. Audacious.
Pretty impressive how they pressed on after that absolute spanking they received. It payed off in a way.
makes sense to me, maybe you should have your own channel! Reminds me of a documentary i saw where the narrator said the Russian were resting and refitting! Resting and refitting were just euphemisms for looting lol!
a complete guess
We've had an SdKfz with the wrong fuel at an event, and had to push it on the trailer with an american truck with similar several tons in weight
Dr Felton could you pls make a video about the first stealth uboat. It was a german typ 7 uboat U-480. The U-480 had rubber plates attached to its outside to neutralize the electromagnetic waves of a sonar. So it was stealth and could not be found with sonar oder radar. Would be very cool if you could make a video about it, and i think the most people watching your channel would interest that too right? ;)
Great vide Mr. Felton. You continued to put on such interesting and well researched your programs. Many thanks for the entertainment and the facts of battles of WW2.
Mark is the best on this type of topic.
Totally authentic. Thank you.
If I'd gotten 5€ every time I hear "German panzer abandoned by its crew": I would be filthy rich by now.
That was always going to end in tears for the British, even with their vastly superior numbers. However, I don't understand why the Jagdpanthers closed on the Churchills, unless they couldn't see them all? They should have hung back, use cover and their gun's superior range, accuracy and penetration, as well as minimising the chance of a shot to their side armour & tracks. Picking the churchills off at range would have seemed a better option given the numerical difference in this engagement.
Great work Mark. I know the subject of my next Jagdpanther build now.
Great vid production. Complements the World at War series.
Some of the pics look like Bovington Tank Museum which we visited almost 10 years ago while on holiday from Canada.
Hi Mark, Your first graphic (at 29 second mark), shows the US 1st Infantry Division landing on Utah Beach and the US 4th Infantry Division landing on Omaha Beach. I think you've got these two backwards, i.e. the 4th Inf Div actually landed on Utah Beach, while the 1st Inf Div landed on Omaha Beach!
I think being ambushed by scarce ultra deadly & superior German armor might have been some the most helpless and scary moments of ww2
The amount of information in your videos is astounding! Bravo!!
😊👍🏻
Which Commander was responsible for failing to send in supporting vehicles and Infantry with the Scots guards Churchills?
After WW2 in Europe there must have been hundreds of thousands of disabled vehicles all over the countryside. Who cleaned them up and how long did it take? I have never seen a documentary on this subject.
A quick correcting, Churchill mk.4 tanks had a frontal armor of 150mm while the mk.2 and 3 had an armor of 89mm, the mk.4 was one of the most armored tanks the allies had during World War Two that was deployed on the field.
Edit: The Churchill mk.2 and 3 had a 50mm gun while the mk.4 had a 75mm.
The Mk. VII had 152 mm. frontal armor.
The biggest flaw in pre- Mk. VII models were that they were built with bolted and riveted plates. The Mk VII was all welded and may have made a big difference here if they were used instead of obsolete Mk. IV's.
The quality of your videos are fantastic! Thanks for the content!
Always great videos. Might want to double check the Normandy beaches and their invasion divisions on the map at the beginning. Great channel - Keep it up!
