      I agree. While the live-actions have their own "uniqueness," there are a LOT of shelved projects that could be done. One such film got turned into "Rock-a-Doodle" and Disney missed out on The Swan Princess.

      There are two (and ONLY two) classic Disney films I think would be great with a live action remake: Hercules (aka Heracles) and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.
      I used to think there were three classic films... but seeing how bad they screwed up Mulan, I now have reservations that they'd do a good job with any.

    When it comes to Newt being cancelled, the movie Rio came out and had a very similar plot to Newt so that was one of the deciding factors

    • @danielaf1487

      Indeed, Newt's plot is very similar to Rio and it looks a lot like The Princess and the Frog.

    • @DukeSkylocker
      @DukeSkylocker Рік тому +22

      John Lasseter actually confirmed that in an interview. Rio was so similar right down to the main characters even having a distinct blue color that Pixar was worried that if they released it people would think it was a ripoff of Rio even though Newt was is production well before Rio hit theaters.

    • @tommydevito4105

      @@DukeSkylocker I remember him saying that. Not only that but Newt was one of the Circle 7 animation movies. Basically if anyone doesn’t know Pixar was it’s own studio and wasn’t originally owned by Disney so the two made movies partnered but as separate companies. So Disney and Pixar ended their partnership, Disney formed Circle 7 animation studios to make sequels to the movies they made partnered with Pixar. Newt was one of the movies Circle 7 was working on, but when Disney bought Pixar officially making Pixar into Disney Pixar a studio that was owned by Disney, Circle 7 animation was shut down and alot of their projects were reworked or cancelled such as Monsters Inc Lost in Scaradise, the original Toy Story 3 with Buzz being recalled and sent to a factory in Thailand, and Newt. Rio ended up being the nail in the coffin for Newt cause after that movie came out they gave up on Newt.

    • @tommydevito4105
      @tommydevito4105 Рік тому +4

      @@DukeSkylocker given with how similar the plot of Rio is to Newt it makes me wonder if one of the writers of Rio knew somebody who was working on Newt that was giving them information about it’s plot so Blue Sky could beat them to the punch even though Newt was in production before Rio was and was at a slow rate

    • @DukeSkylocker
      @DukeSkylocker Рік тому +6

      @@tommydevito4105 To be fair, you didn't even need insider information to know the plot of Newt. I remember seeing a Wikipedia article about it all the way back in 2008.
      That's the thing about movies. They take so long to make that it's easy for another studio to hear about that idea and make their own film with that since you can't copy an idea. That's why you'll have a year with 2 "kidnapping the president" movies (White House Down/Olympus has Fallen) or 2 movies about a comet hurtling towards Earth (Deep Impact/Armageddon)
      It's even worse for animation because they take longer to make and have so much riding on them that you can't just make them quickly and in secret. DreamWorks and Disney over the years have release multiple films in close proximity of each other with similar settings (Antz/A Bug's Life, The Road to Elderado/The Emperor's New Groove, Shark Tale/Finding Nemo, Madagascar/The Wild, etc). Early on, John Lasseter went on a pretty public attack against DreamWorks for releasing Antz right before A Bug's Life, accusing them of theft. However, as he became the face of Pixar he realized that this wasn't a good look for him, so he adopted the kindly uncle persona in the vein of Walt Disney, hence him dismissing the Newt/Rio comparisons as "great minds think alike."

    Couple of honorable mentions: both Fantasia and Rescuers were going to have a third film in their series but got cancelled, in the case of the former it was poor box office of Fantasia 2000 and in the case of the later it was the author of the books dying just a year after the second film's release in 1990.
    Treasure Planet was also supposed to get a sequel and not just a vague "if the film is successful we'll start work on another". They had already written a script and had William Dafoe set to play the villain Ironbeard before it got canned due to the first bombing. Heck, I believe you can even find some storyboards for it online if you dig deep enough.

    It’s great to know more about the cancelled projects from Disney. I already heard about both Dumbo II and Gigantic. I was looking forward to them but it’s gone. It’s so sad that it got canceled because of creative differences and real life events. It’s so frustrating that they announced the projects and then later they got cancelled. Hopefully, in the future, they will bring new developments to these projects. For example, Walt Disney tried to make the animated movie versions of some fairy tales (The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast, etc.) but failed to go through. Then years later, they finally did it with the new generation of Disney employees. I hope it’ll be the same thing for these cancelled projects with the future generation of the employees. We’ll see how it goes. That’s a nice list, MsMojo. Good work!

    Speaking of Disney and movies that didn't make it out for the public, there's a VERY VERY POPULAR Disney movie that ALMOST never came about. Due to everything it had to face. Two MAJOR setbacks. And that popular Disney movie is The Lion King. Those working on the movie left two of the creators hanging to finish it themselves, because they thought that the movie wouldn't take off, boy were they wrong, lol. And when the movie was all pretty much done, the studio where they were in the works of producing the movie, it caught fire, destroying EVERYTHING! And they had to start ALL OVER AGAIN from scratch. But thank God that movie got to see the Big Screen. Too bad these movies haven't.

    Gigantic is by far the movie I was the most excited for when it was announced and the most disappointed about it when it was "shelved" among the 10 movies in this list.
    Although I did have one minor complaint that I had to do with the design of the girl giant Inma, she supposed to be around 11 years old but in a couple pieces of the concept art they drew her face like she was a teenager or an adult instead of looking like child like she should've looked and I'd hoped that was only just a byproduct of the concept artists not used to drawing human child characters.
    much like Vanellope I believe that Inma would make a great and interesting addition to the line of Disney princesses.
    I do hope that work on Gigantic gets picked up where it left off in the near future.

    On a side note, Michael Eisner will always get a lot of credit for overseeing Disney during their renaissance (heck, even his initiative to make direct to dvd sequels to every Disney animated film now looks tame compared to their soulless remakes) but boy could he be a dick. Cancelling a film just to get back at Roy Disney? Geez.

It was so close to getting done, but shelved as 2D was no longer a thing, plans were to make it in 3D, but all Disney animated films would be 3D instead after The Princess And The Frog. I think it's the same for most studios now though.
