Making a FLYING GOOSE quilt with my son John

- This video is a special one timed to come out on Mother's Day here in the UK. Some of you might remember the video last year where I talked about how to make a no-waste flying goose block (I will pop a link to that video below!) At the end of that video my son John came and had some fun messing around with the blocks. Well I really liked what he did, so we decided to make the quilt that way! So I hope you enjoy watching John make his first quilt! He was in a particularly silly mood...

Thank you for the lovely response to John making his first quilt! I am so proud of how he managed and I am glad you all enjoyed it. I wonder if I can get him to finish it now! xxx
Um abraço desde a Ilha da Madeira Portugal 🙏🏼🇵🇹❤
Oh this is fun to watch. Memories of teaching mine to use the sewing machine. My daughter was less interested than her brother. He learned to knit, too! (They are now 43 and 42). Teaching my granddaughter from about 7 on was fun while it lasted. She’s now 15 and no longer interested. He’s getting it!!! His method of ironing cracked me up! The swipes 🤪
You sometimes sew a single layer to prevent fraying!
Your fans demands it! 😅
Yes please bring John back next channel how to put together batting, backing and binding. He's pretty funny man. Good work together!😋
“Because I said so and I’m your mother.” I love it, and it’s probably a good thing that mother instead of wife is doing the teaching. Lovely, lovely video.
I love it..I’ve said that so many times 😂
This would be my son and me....😀😀!!!
Love your family dynamics, so entertaining and fun to be a part of your projects 👏👏👏
You are two lucky women to care for and about eaçh other so very much.
Applause for John!
Boy I needed this today. My first night out of University hospital, after brain surgery, in a hotel a long way from home. I’m sitting here laughing for the first time in days, loving the humor, your family, the beautiful fabric, and can’t wait to get to my home similar to your cottage. I have another week to be here to get stitches out then I can get home again and back to my sewing. I should have brought my EPP or cross stitch with me but I didn’t know I’d be here so long. But watching John sewing blocks was just a wonderful idea. Thank you.
Wishing you healing and a soon return home.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and many quilts to create.
The joy of watching them playing and having fun is good remedy for our difficult times. Wishing you a good recovery, and hoping your surgery went well.💚
I know what you mean. The happiness and fun is often the fresh breeze we need to find the peace in our own lives. Much comfort and good health and healing to you from the States.
Sending healing prayers for you Gail. 💗💗
This video just kept getting better and better !!!! Thank you Anna for your behind the scene work. Great editing. Thanks for leaving the camera run a few minutes longer. How priceless !!!!
Omg, this is hysterical! I love how grown children just revert back to small children when they’re with Mum! Xo
I think John may be like this all of the time!! I'd love to see more of John!!
Exactly ❤
What a lovely video your son has a great sense of humour like his mom 👍😊😊
The early quilting where Kate can’t bear to watch … 😂😂😂😂 …. Every parent ever. ❤
Oh, you patient, patient woman! And you didn't try to strangle him even once! 😆🤣🤣🤣It's a video and quilt he'll treasure for his whole life! Nice!! 👍
Many years ago I was teaching quilting and beginning sewing classes, and a man came in and explained he had built a Kingsized bed of mahogany and done some beautiful inlay designs. So he asked his wife to make a quilt. Her answer was not what he expected, and he came in the store and was directed to me. The first question was, "Do you have a sewing machine?" I then asked if he planned to do a lot of sewing or just this project. He said know and I recommended a Kenmore as I knew them well and he wouldn't have to lay out a lot money. We picked out fabrics and necessary notions. Next class he comes in and starts cutting away. He needed no help threading the machine and made his first block. The next week he came in and the whole top was assembled. Everyone in the class was flabbergasted.
So I showed him the directions on how to sandwich the top, batting and lining. Nest week it was completed. He did have it quilted by another. He brought it in the following week, to all kinds of ooooooohhhhhhhhhhs and aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhs! I never saw him again.
Great story! Apparently he was quite happy with his quilt. 😊
What a kind and loving son. He is spending time and making memories that will be a part of his quilt.
You are so right, each time he looks at this quilt, for the rest of his life, he will remember this day. And Everytime I see a flying goose quilt I will too.
John says, “Does it matter?”
Kate, “Yes, it does!”
John is a good sport.
This was the most enjoyable video I have seen. Thanks to mum and son John. Wonderful quilting ❤
My favorite video ever! I lost my adult son 2 years ago. I watched this through tears, smiles and laughter. My Sean and your John shared a particular sense of humor. Well done!❤️🩹❤️
RİP😢❤
So sorry for your loss. May his memory be a comfort to you. I’m sure you can feel him there watching over you Stay strong.
Sorry for your loss, sounds like you have some lovely memories. Bless you. 💕❤️
Hi, I loved this video and watching John being so silly and loving. I also lost my adult son 2 years ago this month at 42, very unexpectedly. He had a wonderful, silly sense of humor and was also very loving. It's so great to see John with Kate! You too Anna ❤
This is the BEST quilting video I've seen. We all should take some time to be more "carefree" in our quilting. Great job, John.
Apparently it's a universal rationale - Because I said so and I'm your mother !!!!! Love you Kate and your family,
John “presses” the fabric like he’s applying stain. I loved this. Such fun memories made. So much learning. “With great power comes great responsibility.” I love John’s eagerness, initial impatience, and then care and attention to detail. Getting sucked in. ❤ Great guitar music, Anna. “We are not about perfection.” Kate, brilliant idea to sew these together John’s way, with John, on Mother’s Day. The best. I adore you guys.
Who needs tv when we have the Kate and John Show.(to say nothing of Anna). A lovely time on the LGS Cheers from Melbourne
When he rubbed the top of your head and your smile, it was a priceless moment. So sweet.
My 9 yr old grandson rubs the top of his grandad’s head just like that. So endearing.
I think you have created another quilter in the family. You’ll have to buy John his own machine now. It’s a delight to see John up for this, and I love how he teases you, Kate. What a lovely family you have, and what a lovely memory you’re making!
This was the best! I enjoy all of your videos and your family is so lovely. 😊
Oh Kate, I am worn out watching this! A lovely video, looking forward to John slow stitching next. Enjoy your cruise. ❤
Lovely colors!!
John will remember this day always. He is a hoot. It is hard to let someone else touch our machines. Good job, Mom, fixing everything.
We've lost a lot of integrity in our seams ... LOL! Corpsing here! He's not a bad lad, though! He loves his Mum enough to take himself well out of his comfort zone.
I love Kate’s mix of pride and exasperation with John!😊
I couldn't stop laughing along with Kate, John and Anna - especially when John was ironing at first. But as the video and the quilt progressed, I was amazed at what John accomplished and watching the 3 of you bond and make memories of your Mother's Day activity, then my laughter became happy tears. Be proud, John. You have now given me inspiration to get the ol' sewing machine out instead of watching others.
You have raised a genuinely nice respectful son …..what an awesome Mother’s Day Gift😊
Oh Dear John … such a character & a man of many talents but best of all … loves his wonderful mum! What a treat for us all. xx
You and John have a lovely time together. What more could any Mother ask for. The memory of making this quilt will fill his heart forever. I love all the little tangents that occurred.
The best Mother's Day ❤️ 💖 ♥️
Hi Ann, how's your day going with you?
Fab bit of piecing there John, and an absolute lesson on how not to be paralysed by fear when it comes to the crunch of putting it all together. I love the end product. But my goodness I can see exactly what kind of toddler John used to be, and my respect for you Kate has increased a hundredfold.... :)
Thank you Kate, John, and Anna. That was hysterical! I was laughing out loud and enjoying myself immensely. The love you all share for each other is so real and heartwarming. I can’t wait to see John finish his quilt! ❤
Loved seeing Kate trying not to laugh every time John just forges on ahead, and then seeing him working out later that “aaah, I shouldn’t have done that….”. 😅😂😂😁
To John. When you look at the quilt from far, the inaccurances you pointed out fade away. A lot is forgiven when the binding is on. Happy quilting! You are a wonderfulbson! Enjoyed alot!😊
As a mother of grown sons, I must say this was one of your best videos yet!!! The love between you & your son shone through!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Christine, how's your day going with you?
Thanks for the thumbs up, how are you spending your spare time?
Well done John and that waz a lovely Mother's Day tribute.
Kudos to anna who had the biggest smile on her face as the Wife who has a digger in the middle of her lounge. So laid back. I hope the end result is shared with us here.
You are a great teacher, Your son has done great work for the first time making quilt, God bless you and your precious family
You know, John tossing the blocks was actually quite pleasing I thought when he first did it. Having him sew them together was priceless. I think he enjoyed it. Very similar to what he does with wood. Happy video. Thank you all.
He’ll treasure the quilt because it was such a giggle with his mum. Making Memories
I’m so proud of your handsome son for making his first quilt! Such a fun video!
How ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE and wonderful! Such a joy to watch you Kate with your son John! The quilt is fabulous just the way it is!!!
That was a lovely video and when John mentioned that he’d clipped the edge off the wings I remembered my father did that to his geese to stop them flying away, so now it’s a perfect walking geese quilt. It was such an entertaining video. Thanks for sharing.
John is correct about sewing on one layer of fabric. When you do stay stitching on garments you do it on one layer. He is such a good son! Kate seems very nervous. They are so sweet together. Bet Anna was laughing.
If men could only just think of a sewing machine as a ‘POWER tool’, they could allow themselves to love it.
Oh, what a jolly video to watch! I love it when John pops in and what a treat to see him learn to sew! Naturally, since he's your son, he caught on quickly and then everyone had to embrace the chaos! I feel like John must be one who makes everyone laugh and he's a delight. Thanks for sharing a fun Mother's Day post, Kate!
Hi Jennifer, how's your day going with you?
What a wonderful experience! Our older children never cease to give us joy!!! How wonderful you two had this amazing time together!
I love that John just puts the blocks up with no rhyme or reason. I would spend hours putting them up and arranging them until they are perfect! And look, they are perfect! xxx
This was such a joy to watch. Your son is so funny and clearly loves his mum! I think it is obvious he has been paying a lot of attention to you and your sewing all these years. Even with the mistakes, he made a gorgeous quilt with your help.
this has to be one of the very best videos yet...and seeing John step up to the plate and tackle the "machine monster" was hilarious... being creative and "thinking outside the box"...good for you all, for being funny, creative and daring... bravo!!!!
This was absolutely THE MOST DELIGHTFUL Video!!
Go John ❤ ♥️
John! First rule of quilting---NEVER POINT OUT YOUR MISTAKES!!! Very well done, good on you for being willing to try, very beautiful quilt top.
Taught my son to sew, cook and clean! He loved being creative!
As they say in the Northern Mid-West here in the United State, *"Oh, for cute. That's just too cute!"*
Kate, you are an amazing woman, mother, mother-in-law, teacher, patient, fun loving just like John, and just WOW! Awesomeness 😀 tears of happiness from watching this video. The geese are flying in their own formation, no need to be perfect😂 “Thank you all” for a great 33 minutes of my day!!!!!
Great job John and Kate! I really enjoyed watching your joint quilt come to life. Well done to Kate for letting go and allowing the fun to happen. It's a great lesson to us all not to take ourselves too seriously and to find the fun in the end result. Such a special time together and congratulations on having a wonderful relationship. Great filming Anna too xx
This is so special time for you and john. I can't believe he agreed to it. How special.
This is absolutely lovely. A mother and her son, the love and patience. I felt like I was in a quilt lesson with my own grandma. You are a fabulous teacher, more for us newbies, please!
Hi Mary, how's your day going with you?
So much fun to watch John with his Mom! It will be a special quilt. Happy Mother's Day Kate!
Thank you Anna for doing all the wonderful filming for us to enjoy. You are always so sweet and patient. You and John are such a loving couple as you show love for your family.
"Because I said so and I'm your mother" the most authoritative statement that ever existed 😆. Thank for the fun. ❤ 🇦🇺
Another day of fun and laughter with the Kate and John Show. Delightful and funny. He must have been a handful when he was younger.
John and the ready to sew wisdom: "With great power comes great responsibility...". LOL!!!🤣 I'll bet he was a riot to raise! I laughed all the way through. "The colors and the fabrics aren't important..." and the look Kate shot! DYING!!!! But I must admit, he seems to have a knack in just doing it without fuss. Wonderful first quilt John!!!👏👏👏
He must've been a handful as a kid.😂 you're very patient, Kate.
Clipping beaks and wings oh my. Goose geese,, ducks. Remember the story of the Ugly Duckling. It didn’t start out so pretty albeit it grew up to be stunning. John, once this quilt is grown, it will be so beautiful too.
What a joy to see John quilting. He is a laugh! His quilt looks great. I did not know that Mother’s Day in the UK is different from in the US! People here actually use Mother’s Day as a planting date/landmark for their gardens, and two months would certainly make a difference.
I know, same here. Learned that the UK Mother’s Day is different than ours in Canada on the Oscar awards the other night where they mentioned it a few times that it was Mother’s Day on that particular Sunday. How can it be that it’s the first time learning this in my 74 years. I thought everyone celebrated it in May all over the world. Still learning stuff at my age, lol.
John you made us happy and smile but more importantly you made your mom laugh and she loved having you enjoy her craft!! You’re a good son!!
I actually LOVE what John did and may take his lead by "just doing it"!!! Way to go John!
Oh my goodness,I really enjoyed this video made me laugh quite a bit 😂😂, I love John’s sense of humor!,what a joy to see the both of you working together on this quilt, keep it up laughter is the best medicine ❤❤
Sharing your passion with someone you love is eternal.
Happy Mothers Day to all our British friends! So pleased for you Kate hitting140k community friends. Thank you for the home you've created. John and Anna are such a joy. The wee bit of the Pixie in John I think!
What a sweet Mother's Day gift from your son. Spending time on something you love to do. I love it! I'm sure that made you feel so special! As you are!
Hi Shari, how's your day going with you?
You guys brought me to tears in the end..... THAT. LOVE. OF. A. MOTHER. FOR. HER. SON.
Nothing more beautiful!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
This is the most stressful and the most joyful quilt Kate has made.
Oh my gosh what a treat! John is so funny. I can't imagine raising such a rambunctious child. Well done Kate
I'm sure there is never a dull moment with John around. You're such a a lovely family. Thank you❤
I loved this video , I think John did well for his first time , what fun this was . And I think the quilt is lovely , including any "mistakes " because there is a memory in it all . Beautiful
oh how brilliant, the love on show, the humour, the willingness to try something new, loved it when you couldn't watch him sew, brilliant. I was laughing out loud and wishing my son was with me. Thank you so much for all the videos you make, i enjoy them so much.
It's lovely to see you interact. Sons always try to yank their mother's chain!! He is really a wonderful son. You're more alike than you probably think. Thank you for sharing your special day together.
Thank you all soooo much. You made me smile all the way through. Well done Kate for holding back and letting John design/explore. Fantastic ❤ 😻👍
You two are precious together. What a lovely man he is. He loves his mum.
This has got to be a family keepsake. The chatter, the love, the endless smiling. What a beautiful gift of a day. Thank you Kate, John and Anna❤️
That was hilarious! Kate, you have the patience of a saint! It's now time for John to let you loose in his workshop!
Just brought a smile to my face watching John sewing one of the hardest pattern together. It isn't the end result that is important. It is the journey and the love and time spent together that matters. Hope to see more of John behind the sewing machine. Quilting should be fun.
He did a really good job considering it’s his first time
That quilt should be named "silly goose". Love it!!
Kate, it is so wonderful that your children support you and take interest in what you do and I love it when he rustles your hair.
I think John did brilliantly for his first quilt. Such a fun video for which I thank you Kate. Happy Mothers Day. xx
I so enjoy John, Martha, Agnes, and family appearing on the Patreon channel and this video was so fun! I look forward to seeing him learn the quilt stitch :)
Oh my goodness, I have so enjoyed this mother son video. Please bring John back
This entire video is so precious. A wonderful family memory story for your family. Cheers.
I once spent 18 months in a secure unit, with mainly boys, teaching them to make cushions!! They loved making cushions with the sewing machine and we 100s.
What a character John is - much like his mum. Such a precious day to have spent this time together. ❤
This was wonderful … all mothers should have such special time ….as casual as he is about the placement , I bet he is more precise in his home construction… Happy Mothers Day….by the end I was laughing… so enjoyable !!!!
Yes, I for one would like to see John make a quilt sandwich and do some quilt stitching 👍!
Excellent Video!!!! What FUN!!!
Kate, you actually illustrated so much about sewing techniques through John’s “errors”. A very unintentional tangible video of the does and do nots, why and or why nots, self forgiveness w/the prize being fun in learning and building a forever joyful memory.
A Lovely Mother’s Day gifted video. Thank you Kate ❤️
I think you have the most wonderful son! What a trooper!! He is a delight to watch! I hope everyone who watched this video loves it as much as I do!!!! Happy Mum's day!! Take care from Michigan, US
Yes!! Would love to watch John "stitch in the ditch!" 😄
Absolutely charming 🩵 video, you guys-- thanks so much 🧵
I absolutely love that the two of you are just SO NATURAL in your videos! Thank you for blending in with the rest of us, for being real.
Congratulations, John! 👏👏👏
Enjoying a cuppa while watching your son do his magic with your blocks!! 😂
This was a fantastic memory you two made together, and what a fantastic mum you are. He is so kind, funny and a joy to be around. You must be so proud of all of your family. Such a precious thing to share with all of us. He has your gift of color and creativity. He will never forget this learning experience, and it may well open up a new passion for him and Anna to carry on in creating fabulous quilts at home also. What a gift you have given them. Teach a man to fish and he never goes hungry, same thing with creativity. It opens up the soul!
I love that John compared assembling a quilt top with making a butcher block out of wood and using your fence. My grandpa is a life long woodworker, so the terminology makes perfect sense to me.
So delightful to see John learning to make a quilt. The best was watching your interactions. Especially at the end. Brought tears to my eyes to see your love for each other. My own children are far away.
That was my line! “Because I’m your mother and I said so!”
Great job John❤
“Because I said so and I’m your mother”. I love that…how many time did I say that to my children????
I'm totally cracking up watching John sew the blocks together. It reminded me when my grandmother tried to teach my son, who was then age 11, to use the sewing machine. Foot to the pedal, full speed ahead and yee hah. That was the end of the sewing lessons for him! The thing that's funny is he is a master carpenter like John and ever so precise and careful when working with tools and wood. This was a fun one to watch and I hope your Mother's day was fun too.
